SSAL San Francisco Reviews from The Last Year
We first started coming to SSAL when they first opened
We first started coming to SSAL when they first opened during COVID, back when it was takeout only. We loved their grilled unagi set; it was such treat! After they started welcoming dine-in customers, we've been here three times, and it's been a delight each time. Our third visit was this past Saturday, and SSAL again hit it out of the park. Every course was delicious, and it was clear they designed the dishes to appeal to different senses: beautifully plated, amazing aromas, and delicious. The menu was thoughtfully designed; each dish brought something a different to the full assemble. The pace of the meal was perfect too; the whole meal of 11 courses took 2 hours. We look forward to returning!
One of my new favorite restaurants.
Every course was both delicious and plated beautifully, but my favorite was definitely their perfectly cooked scallop served alongside their flaky croissant. Wish they sold their injeolmi honey butter for their croissant because I would spread that onto everything. When I first looked at their menu, I was a bit hesitant because there were a few items that I don't particularly enjoy. Glad I gave them a chance anyway, because the flavors in every dish worked well together and I was left blown away.

I'm very picky when it comes to food but this place took Korean fine dining to another level. I rarely say everything was good but it was that good! Quality, presentation and service...EXCELLENT Will definitely go back!
Vvery special place.
we celebrated birthday here and they treated us beutifully. the tasting menu was very nicely presnted and executed. advanced dining for discerning palates. Highly reccomended.
San Francisco, Russian Hill.
April 2024. Bae Junsoo and his wife, Hyunyoung, lead the city's new wave of Korean chef's elevating Korean cuisine. By using specifically sourced Korean ingredients highlighted by California's fresh seasonal bounty they create a seasonal prix fixe that is a delightful experience. The first thing you notice is how the front and back of the house work together to set a welcoming atmosphere. The open kitchen means Chef Junsoo can watch each diner to observe how his food is received. There is a lot of pride and precision in the plating. The progression takes you deep into Korean flavors that are familiar but uses ingredients from Korea you may have never known about. A finishing rice dish was plated with a beautiful piece of fish on top that was meant to be broken down and mixed into the rice, then eaten traditionally with a long spoon alongside some banchan and a cup of broth. The desserts are a series of plates using Korean ingredients but looking nothing like what you are used to seeing. Flavor and texture is a bigger emphasis than style. Every item is simple but beautiful. Before you leave you may be offered a Polaroid "kitchen photo" opportunity that is signed and placed in a holder. Then the evening's prix fixe menu signed by everyone is given to you in a restaurant envelope. Worth the effort and price. As good a meal that I've had in San Francisco because of the combination of warm hospitality and pride.
Pricey.
The food was amazing, but one of the dishes with rice wasn't cooked enough, maybe that's how the dish is supposed to be and I don't know, but the rice was definitely undercooked.
Michelin star rated Korean fusion restaurant.
We made a reservation for a friends birthday a couple months in advance and it wasn't too hard to get in. Highly recommended for a booking during the week, it is less busy and more intimate. Located off Polk street, there's only street parking so try to get there early. Very inviting and attentive staff. We started with a bottle of white wine and asked which paired well, we also added on the additional Korean short rib that was $40 pp and the whole group had to add it on as an option. Towards the end we got a glass of red. Everything was amazing, from the details of the menu, and all of the Korean local artists that were a part of the meal and artwork. I really enjoyed the Maine live eel, Juk, Korean short rib and all of the desserts. Everything was really good and had so much flavor. We're glad we got to try other options than seafood and they did tell us it was seafood heavy since that's what's in season. We started with an oyster, caviar, sea bream, abalone, quail and all with Korean traditional touches and flavor. Mashikita! Kansamnida Ssal for such a great fine dining experience!

We came here to celebrate our anniversary and we loved our night here. The service here deserves more than 5 stars as everyone was fun to talk to, super attentive, and they also gave us the largest fresh truffle shavings that I've gotten in my life ("Well there's only a bit left... why not give you both the whole thing"). The food was creative and everything tasted delicious. Our tasting menu included: Scallops in brown butter, wagyu tartare (amazing!), eel, hiramasa, crab juk, abalone, Arsicault croissant with incredible butter (I still think about this), Galchi, A5 wagyu, and a sikhye. PLUS all the little mini fruits, custards, and creampuffs for dessert. They even took a photo of us and put it in a little frame along with a signed menu of the tasting we had.
Horrible server and ambiance .
The restaurant was noisy with loud radio music blasting over our head. Music was not even soothing for dining experience in a Michelin star restaurant. Asked the server to turn music down by half and he said " I won't do that , maybe 15% lower!" He just had a condescending smirk and walked away. Asked owner/ chef to turn down the music, again , he refused to accommodate our request. Food was just okay. Definitely not worthy of a star.
Overall great experience.
Went for my birthday, they take a picture and provide you a polaroid as a souvenir Ambience - mimalistic and intimate, spaced out very well. music that was playing was more a lounge vibe. Service was consistent and on point. Very attentive and clean. The menu was 5/5

SSAL offers a contemporary take on Korean cuisine, boasting a menu of meticulously prepared dishes that showcase fresh, seasonal ingredients. The tasting menu allows you to experience a variety of their culinary creations, from fresh variety of seafood to juicy tender quail. Make sure you ask to see the live eel from the kitchen before it's butchered. It's that fresh. The tasting menu was innovative, flavor explosion packed in every bite that tantalized your taste buds. The staff are all attentive and knowledgeable, ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable dining experience. I enjoyed chatting with the staff. The restaurant itself exudes a minimalist yet sophisticated ambiance, perfect for a special occasion or a memorable night out.

Husband brought me here for my birthday after it was highly recommended by another foodie couple. The restaurant is warm and welcoming, small but open with luxuriously spaced tables (no packing guests elbow to elbow here) and it kind of invokes the feeling of being in someone's home. The wait staff are friendly and knowledgeable, with excellent wine recommendations that completed the meal very well. The fixed price menu is seafood heavy, and every bite was delicious- a pleasantly shocking zero miss meal (which consisted of 10 courses!). I think particular standouts for me were the beef tartar with sesame oil tart (beautiful flavors and consistency), the dungeness crab juk with uni (a porridge that bordered on risotto level creaminess), the Korean abalone with the ariscault croissant, and the beef short rib (was a $40/person add on BUT is also their signature dish, where they come tableside to carve it for you; truly melt in your mouth consistency with just the right amount of char and salt). At the end, they give you a signed menu and a little Polaroid picture to commemorate your meal. Honestly everything about this place was perfect- I would highly recommend coming here and checking it out yourself! One of the best meals I've ever had!

Food: 5/5 Service: 5/5 Price: 4/5 Atmosphere: 5/5 TL;DR: Incredible place to have a nice, fancy meal or celebrate an occassion. Everything here is top tier, from the ambience, service, music, decor, & obviously food -- it's very minimalistic & clean. The servers were really nice and took the time to explain every dish to us, and were very attentive. The food was really unique & creative. It is pricey but that's expected given how large the tasting menu was and the quality of food (plus it's a Michelin star restaurant lol). Is it worth it though? Probably if you have the budget for it or if it's for a special occasion. Oyster, Chojang, Brown Butter: *4/5*: oyster had a nice sweetness & paired well with the sauce American Eel & Gamtae Seaweed: *5/5*: the seaweed has a grassy flavor and a little tough to chew through, but the bbq eel was delicious -- soft tender and the flavor was perfect. we really enjoyed this one Soondae, Perilla Leaf, Cashew Samjang: *4/5*: this was really interesting, the soondae wasn't like any traditional soondae you'd get but pretty delicious and more "meaty" than you'd expect. The cashew samjang had an extra nuttiness to it (obviously) but it didn't overpower the samjang flavor Bluefin Tuna, Caviar, House-made Sesame Oil w/ Uni on the side: *4/5*: The uni is extra & you have an option to choose if you want it in the beginning of the meal. The uni wasn't briny, great umami and creaminess that paired well with the tuna. Tuna was melt in your mouth and really focused on just the overall natural flavor of the tuna Scallop, Marinated Tomatoes: *3.5-4/5*: The scallop was cooked perfectly and the tomatoes had a sweet yet pickled-y flavor. If you're not a fan of tomatoes, this dish isn't for you. Soondubu: *3.5/5*: The foam on top was really really interesting. The soondubu itself could've used some more flavor -- it's like "white-washed" and not as flavorful as what you'd get from a traditional Korean restaurant. The mussel & octopus inside were delicious though Ssal x Arsicault Croissant, Injeolmi Butter: *5/5*: One of our favorite things of the night. The croissant was super buttery and flaky yet fluffy. The injeolmi butter was so so good too that I tried looking up recipes on how to make it after the first bite. Wild Jeju Galchi, Queen Rice, Banchan: *3/5*: Personally not a fan of this one as it was too flavorless for me, even if you ate it with the banchan. The fish was cooked really well though. My partner really enjoyed this though Wolfe Ranch Quail, Pomegranate Vinaigrette: *5/5*: The quail was so incredibly tender & juicy. It also had a nice smokiness from how it was cooked. Sauced glazed the quail well and I really enjoyed eating it together with the plum slices. Beef Short Rib, Tteokgalbi: *5/5*: Short rib is incredibly tender and smoky but honestly, the tteokgalbi is what stole the show. The pepper was roasted to perfection and the galbi inside had a sweet & savory yumminess. I traded my short rib piece for my partners tteokgalbi lol Corn Ice Cream, Black Truffle, Rice: *4/5*: A little too savory of a dessert for us, tasted good though Assorted Desserts: *5/5*: The melon was really sweet & refreshing. I loved the cream puffs the best

Really enjoyed my experience at Ssal! Loved the flavors of the tasting menu and how much food it includes. We ordered the truffle brown butter pasta add on and really enjoyed that too. Chef also spent some time answering our questions and telling us about his approach to cooking. Overall a fantastic experience and worth every penny.

If you want to have a really fantastic night out and try a slightly different style of tasting menu, come here. SSAL is the whole package, beyond food, ambience, service, music, decor... My favourites were the abalone dish and the belt fish, but each course was varied and authentic. It was a lovely progression and the final dessert presentation was a great surprise. Highly recommend. Worth it.
