Varoulko Seaside Restaurant Pireas Reviews from The Last Year
Amazing!
Amazing food and experience. The staff was super service minded 👌🏻 Highly recommendable and I would visit again if I come back to Greece
Brilliant Michelin Starred place (without the Michelin star prices)
This was recommended by one of the porters in our hotel and it didn’t disappoint! Not much street presence on the harbour compared to the several smart restaurants on either side, this area has a bit the feel of the French Riviera and looking at the menus as walked by most restaurants are pretty pricey. We were directed to the second floor and a table with great view looking across the bay towards the sea and Glyfada. Great place to sit and very attentive service, if there is a slight criticism it’s the introduction of each dish as it’s served. The dishes are well described in the menu and it feels a little old fashioned. Now the food; Started with a Greek salad which always makes me nervous as son many chefs have tried to mess about with this dish unsuccessfully. Not here, this was sublime with a feta mousse that lifted the dish and the very good quality ingredients. Tuna carpaccio was ultra fresh and fitted with delicious little blobs of sauces and fragrant edible flowers. For me the deep fried onion bits scattered over it were a little overpowering but easy to remove these to your taste. The fish Pattie was extraordinary and delicious - it much more to say on that. Then the grilled John Dory fillet - cooked to perfection and served with a light pea puree and parsnip done three ways. Living in the coast I frequently cook fish from the freshest of sources but this was fish cookery to rival Steins in Padstow. Unusually we went for a desert and asked the sommelier to pair these with desert wine. He paired two different Greek wines which complemented the puddings superbly which were very different - a citruses and sharp lemon cake and an indulgent chocolate mushroom which was remarkable. At the end of the meal we left having paid the equivalent price to a good gastro pub meal in the UK
Some nice dishes, but surprising this has a Michelin star
Came here and had the tasting menu (135 euros each for 11 courses). There were some nice dishes among them, but some really did not work as they were overpowered by one ingredient (such as the lemon puree on the tuna). It was a different experience, but we were surprised it had a Michelin star. Also, the clientele was something to be desired. Lots of people in tracksuits on their phones, taking calls at the table etc. The decor is that of a middle of the road restaurant, not a special high end place. All rather disappointing, and the service was also lacking in attentiveness, although the waiters themselves were friendly.
Incredible
Everything incredible. The food, the service and the place. Highly recommended. We were with family and we liked everything very much. We will be back.
A hero from the small town
Born in 1952 in a town fifteen minutes from the restaurant (Piraeus, 15 minutes from Athens), founder Lefteris Lazarou, whose father became a ship cook, never thought of taking a different path. At the age of 15, he began to work in the ship's kitchen in the summer with his father, and he traveled to many countries and studied their local specialties. Over time, he decided to build a "ship" on land, a kitchen that would never be shaken by the waves. So, in October 1987, he opened Varoulko, and then in 2002 he became a famous Michelin-starred Greek chef, the first Michelin-starred fine dining restaurant in the city to offer an exclusive seafood menu. From 2010, his popularity reached its peak because he participated in the Greek version of the famous cooking show MasterChef, as one of the three judges, and he once taught at the Culinary Institute of America (Culinary Institute of America). Elytis once said that if you deconstruct Greece, in the end you will see what is left of an olive tree, a vineyard and a fishing boat.
Easily 10/10
The place is perfect with a very good view and service from the kindest staff. We got 5 starters, 2 mains and 3 desserts. The dishes came in order which were presented to us in detail. My favorites were probably the shrimp and scallop salad. Also the sweets perfect in appearance and taste. In general, the food was on another level. Also the prices are very reasonable for what you eat. We will definitely be back.
Great Service and excellent food
Nicely located on the second floor overlooking the harbor. Excellent service and delicious food. We asked the sommelier to pair wines for our selected dishes... This was perfect. Every dish was delicious, nicely served. Highly recommended
Up&down
Excellent location, we ate on the second floor overlooking the port, the outdoor area was not yet set up. A promising start to the service, the maitre d', followed by the sommelier etc etc, but then he took the order and upon my request for a wine he recommended it to me and not the sommelier. Then he disappeared. The dishes were of an excellent standard and with a presentation worthy of a Michelin star. Starter with hot bread, olives, tomato and citrus sauce and oil tasting. To follow (there were 4 of us) mussels with salicornia and artichokes, Dorado gilet, orzotto with prawns, calamari with cold ouzo gel, gyoza and a linguine with very good fish sauce but the pasta not al dente. At the moment of the sweet mistake of the waitress who brought two lemon pies instead of the requested Apples and rather than admit the mistake that may have occurred, she tried to convince us by saying that the lemons were the best dessert in the restaurant. Too bad they had run out of babà which seemed to me to be the most innovative proposal. Normal markup on good Moscato drunk. 60 Euros each for the bill.
Excellent fish restaurant
Ate tasting menu with nine dishes. Fantastic craftsmanship. Took the wine package but was missing a red wine dish. Incredibly good waiter, Ionnides.
Don't take a car
We visited Varulko for the umpteenth time because it has nice flavors and when we celebrate an event we choose it. Unfortunately, this was the last time. We gave the car to the valets and when they returned it to us they informed us that some lady had crashed it in the parking lot. They called, as I was told, the police and the lady's insurance company. However, no recorded incident was ever found in the Piraeus traffic police, nor was there any declaration to the insurance company. I searched a lot because I know people in this area. I called Varulko at least 5 times and the person in charge said he would look it up (from cameras in the parking lot and his colleagues) and get back to me. He NEVER got me. Not even to express an apology. I do not know if Mr. Lazarou is aware of this unacceptable behavior. I know that the Michelin star is not only about the good food, but a set of services of the restaurant. I am really sorry.
Outrageously good
At the end of two weeks in Greece including idyllic stays on various islands, dinner at this restaurant provided the perfect send-off to a beautiful trip. Starting with a mouthwatering black quinoa salad, grilled shrimps, mango, pomegranate, and truffle mayonnaise, while my husband had a remarkable fish soup, we moved on to grouper fish in black squid ink with smoked pancetta cream and dauphinoise potato with mushroom - outrageously good! The desserts were artistic masterpieces and delicious: a lemon cream with Mousseline ginger, almond biscuit, and tonka-pepper ice cream; and the pièce de résistance - the Mushroom, a garden-like presentation of chocolate mousse, chocolate cremeux, mousseline porcini, hazelnut biscuit, and greek coffee ice cream that came shaped into pebbles. I will carry the memory of that dessert with me for a long while! Our server Jordan was a delight - he was so pleased and proud that we enjoyed every morsel, and made some excellent recommendations. Service overall was efficient and professional. Bravo to Chef Lazarou and his team!
Rubbish
Verzehr im Restaurant | Abendessen | Mehr als 50 € Bad food, unbelievable for a Michelin star, unfriendly and cheeky reception from the lady at the reception and the 2 men at the reception, not a good day. You are given a warm welcome. rubbish rip off
Culinary delight with fantastic views
Great restaurant with very refined cuisine. Fantastic table with a view of the beautiful marina. Food is on the pricier side but definitely worth it. Exceptionally friendly staff who know their trade. Also separate smoking area on third floor with comfortable seats.
Good but not great
Excellent and committed sommelier, high class of the food but the waitress rambled monotonously so we missed some information. We were a bit forgotten by the end of the meal. Mediocre decor but great view.
Unfortunately eat fish eyes
We also started to come to the winch with the reasoning that it is an excellent restaurant with careful cuisine, starting from the reservation we were told that (in the middle of 2024 when we are talking about freedom and diversity) there is a dress code and sports shoes are prohibited, they want elegant clothing. We also say okay since your policy is like this (even though we disagreed) let's go there, the only elegant ones were us, since OF COURSE people went with sports shoes and casual clothes for March 25th, they ignore that and the tragic irony of elegant dressing and go to the food since that's what we're asking for, pretty good raw material but the wrong way to manage it yes we don't all have the same taste buds I totally respect that but when we mix so many flavors in one dish take ravioli for example we lose the essence of it taste, moreover the prices are excessive and I am paid the michelin star and the name of Lazarus, if these dishes did not have his signature they would be below average. The only interesting thing was the mushroom 🍄 as a dessert which was imaginative, moreover you ask the allergies because you have so many flavors and we don't know what exactly is inside but your waiters didn't know either, as I was asking because I'm allergic to strawberry and the answer was "I don't know will ask inside" if he doesn't know who does? Also the waitress spilled all the oil dip down, I hope no one slipped after us. I'm sorry but through the stars you half forgot where you started and forgot your love for the kitchen Mr. Lazarou, I received that, I wish in the future they will learn to put love in the food made by the people in your kitchen because in addition to technique, perception is needed and love! Good luck
Best restaurant
One for the best seafood restaurant among Greece. Michelin star award ,the food here is outstanding. try fresh fish and the starter with calamari, delicious
Amazing food, great wine and spectacular view!
Amazing food, worthy of its Michelin star! Great wine list to pair food, wonderful location and view. Would love to eat here again soon!
DINING EXPERIENCE
What an amazing experience from start to finish. The staff were excellent. The food was totally amazing and an experience we will never forget. So nice to meet the owner/chef and his daughter. Iordanis explained each experience with a passion and looked after us as if we were the most important people in the restaurant. An experience we'll never forget.
A Michelin restaurant who thought is Michelin
Visited the restaurant for my wife's birthday. We were recommended the restaurant by friends as one of the top Michelin restaurants in the country. Here is the thing. I have visited many top restaurants as a foodie around the world and this restaurant in my opinion is ranked as one of the lowest in that category af top restaurants, and that is for many reasons: - the decor of the place is very poor and old fashioned. - the ambiance music of a very bad taste. - the washrooms in the basement of the building, accessible by the lift. Now about the food. The food was reasonable in quality. The presentation was very good. The taste of one or two dishes was below standard as over seasoned with salt. The service was good but not of Michelin standard. Summary: A reasonable restaurant but not of Michelin ranking, except the pricing of course!
EXCELLENT!!!!
perfect experience, delicious dishes, good service, fantastic comfortable place, amazing view of the Athenian Riviera. The best value for money. In equivalent restaurants in Europe we would pay at least twice as much.
A dinner experience that made me change my opinion about seafood
Just amazing!!! Εξαιρετικό σέρβις!! They were attending to whatever we wanted before we could even ask for it. Το φαγητό ήταν υπέροχο. Γευστικά και αισθητικά. Favorite plate: βελουτε σούπα σουπιάς
