Theodora Brooklyn Reviews from The Last Year
This was really outstanding.
The kubaneh, eggplant dip with laffa, striped bass ceviche (even with cilantro in the sauce), cucumber stone fruit salad (with salsa macha), wood fired greens, whole butterflied trout, and chocolate cake were all perfect -- I could make an argument for all or none being re-order candidates, only because there are so many other menu items that also sound incredible. Can't wait to come back and try more.

I sat at the bar which was super packed! I thought getting there right as the restaurant opened would help me beat a crowd, but nope. Which is awesome! Even though the restaurant was busy, the energy was still super chill and the waitstaff was incredibly attentive. Adam, one of the bartenders, was super sweet and explained everything well. Everything I ate was delicious. The wood fire roasted veggies had a little too much oil on them for my liking, but I still cleaned that plate. The octopus was to die for and the donuts as a dessert were a perfect sweet way to end the meal. I also ordered the special, the dry aged sablefish with a melon that I can't remember the name of. Such a delicate fish and it was seasoned perfectly. I paired it with a bright bubbly, the Chi Mera to add a little contrast. The staff were so kind, they let me taste two bubbles before committing to make sure I found the right flavor. I was so full! All in all, this is a cute spot to bring friends or a date to share plates and vibe. I would recommend making a reservation. I think I got lucky being a walk in!

Sat at the counter seats and watched every aspect of the meal being made, which is absolutely the way to go in experiencing this spot. There is a nice mix of culinary options to choose from what ultimately created quite a nice meal. Appetizers included the king salmon, which was delectable and such a buttery texture. Will almost never pass up an octopus dish, and glad I didn't pass up on this one. The whipped ricotta toast was truly the surprise of the night as it was maybe our favorite dish. Such an airy yet creamy texture and so well made. We got the falafel but probably could have skipped this- it didn't add much to the meal overall. The cod and lamb were our mains, both of which were great choices. The lamb dish itself was especially interesting as it came with four separate sauces to experience it with. Altogether a well-balanced meal and with the seating it was a great experience.

Was really excited to try this place after it blew up on IG, TikTok, you name it. After scoring 7:30 dinner reservations my bf and I were ready to celebrate our anniversary. Unfortunately it didn't live up to the hype and we left hungry and ready to eat a second dinner nearby. The noise level is insane, hard to hear the person sitting directly across from you. Food portions are small and while food itself was cooked perfectly from a chef perspective, the combination of the food on the plate/dishes lacked creativity and "wow". The servers also never cleared our very evident empty dishes from the table which meant we started having a collection of empty plates on our table. I know some other reviews mentioned they got a complimentary cake or dessert but we just got handed a bill. Id skip the hype and go elsewhere.

A lot of people hyping up Theodora as the best new restaurant in 2024. I haven't been to enough new places to agree or disagree but the food is good. Some dishes hit better than others. Lamb is a bit dry and boring but everything else was great.
We loved Miss Ada so we went to Theodora and it's great.
Definitely different than Miss Ada, but not in a bad way. All the food was good, cocktails were great, super nice and accommodating staff. Highly recommend for a date.
Had the absolute best time at Theodora tonight.
We arrived a bit early for our 9:30 reservation at the chefs counter and were able to be seated right away. Our server Dave had the best vibes and set the tone for what would be the perfect dinner. We started off with the appetizer special of smoked fish croquettes which were absolutely beautiful. From there we enjoyed the chargrilled cabbage and whipped ricotta sourdough. I've had whipped ricotta toast at a few places in New York and the toast here stands head and shoulders above. The bread was perfectly toasted and was served with honey and thyme on top. It was decadent and delicious and the perfect portion for two people. Our mains were the black cod and the half chicken. The beurre Blanc on the cod was actually unreal. Seasoned and cooked to perfection. The half chicken was smokey and so moist. I can't wait to eat this again. The sauce had such a rich depth of flavor and the carrots + pearl onions really rounded everything out. For dessert we finished with the chocolate cake and donuts and it was at this point I realized I hadn't taken any photos of our meal so I made sure to take one before we dug in. Overall, Theodora was a delightful experience and the perfect spot for date night. Will definitely be coming back for the octopus and branzino!! Thank you again Dave & the Theodora team for creating such an inviting space.
Theodora was absolutely incredible.
Go back as much as you can, if you can get it :) I thought it was better than Miss Ada (their sister restaurant).
The main attraction on a recent Sunday evening at Theodora
The main attraction on a recent Sunday evening at Theodora in Brooklyn wasn't the fluffy buns emerging from a multi-thousand-dollar charcoal Josper oven, or even the literal flames rising from the Mangal Grill next to it that kissed an order of honey habanero shrimp. It was a school of whole fish, auspiciously backlit and visible from nearly every seat in the restaurant, hanging by their tails in dry-aging lockers. Inside were Ora King salmon, striped bass and several trout hanging from large fishing hooks, each gutted, cleaned and tagged with a piece of paper dated several days ago. Hanging the fish unseasoned in a temperature-controlled environment systematically removes moisture through air circulation, increasing the percentage of fat that the chef swears will dramatically improve texture and flavor. As soon as I was seated, a waiter touted the appeal of the whole dry-aged roasted sea bass ($78) in the polite tone often reserved for wagyu specials. "It's so tender it falls off the bone easily," the waiter murmured with a grin.
One of the best meals I had in recent memory.
Miss Ada is one of my favorite restaurants in NYC, and Theodora is a perfect sequel. I want to eat this kind of food all. the. time. My boyfriend and I put our name in at 5:30 PM on a Friday before a holiday weekend and were seated at 6:55 PM at the bar. I tried: + Abby Cadabby cocktail + Pomona cocktail + Nammu nammu cocktail + Sourdough with whipped ricotta + Steelhead trout + Zataar kubaneh + Striped bass ceviche + Chocolate cake The top food highlight was the ricotta, followed by the steelhead trout and desert. Kubaneh was also fantastic. Ceviche was tasty, too! As for the cocktails, the Abby Cadabby was my favorite, followed by the Pomona. The Nammu nammu was a little salty, but the sidecar was fun. Service was fantastic at the bar. Need to return immediately. P.S. The bathroom is its own party...

I dont venture out of manhattan much but i did We ventured to fort greene for the highly anticipated Theodora. Which we reserve two months in advance The restaurant is quant and lovely and we did snag the in wall booth which was super cute but that was the best part of the whole experience. Martinis were average. The highly rated tuna in a cracker was too much. We ended uo eating the tuna alone without the mango n crème fresh. At the end of our meal, we tried to redeem it with the Seabass ceviche, and the best part of that dish was the four tiny pieces of burnt pineapple. The cheese. The ricotta mascarpone chocolate cake dessert was flavorless. The chocolate brownie was just as good as that of a cheesecake factory.

Wow. Absolutely blown away. The bar program, the vibes, the service, the food. Can I give Theodora more stars? I got in at the bar with no wait on a saturday evening. The music is the perfect volume, the decor, design work in perfect cohesion with the restaurant. You can see just how delicately and meticulously crafted this space was made. Oh, and the pomona? Fire. An insanely balanced mezcal crusher. You get the funkiness of the mezcal while the mango and passionfruit harmoniously intercede to ensure it does not overpower. The za'tar was insane. Light, airy, and all of the dips were great. The tomato aioli was acidic and tart. I think the harissa was my favorite though. The broccolini was incredible as well. Charred to perfection with a zesty sauce adding the perfect salty, tang. But, the prawns are the star. Wow, pineapple, cilantro, habanero... a match made in heaven. The prawns were cooked beautifully and the habanero did not heat things up too much. It was very mild. Of course, the pineapple came in with some sweetness, and the cilantro was just the final touch. Theodora, do not tell my girlfriend, but you have my heart. This set the bar high for new york restaurants moving forward. Innovative, classy. Accessible. Oh, and the bartender was a magician. He worked seamlessly with his tools crafting up some phenomenal drinks while providing excellent service, cheers!

Amazing!! I totally get the hype over this charming Fort Greene spot. Really the standout dish here is the ricotta toast - come here and order two because it's just that good. No doubt a top 10 NYC dish I have had Outside of that everything else is pretty fantastic; the breads and dips are fantastic and I'd say the beets are good but not great. The service was friendly and I think this restaurant deserves the flowers it gets!
Food 4.
5/5.0 Service 4.0/5.0 Value 3.5/5.0 Decor 3.5/5.0 Overall 4.5/5.0 Food was very good, though be aware that this is all relatively light fare. Reservations are recommended though they clearly don't push any particular timing on the tables so keep sufficient spacing to let early walk-ins take a spot in line. Service was very good.

Theodora was great!! Was such a good vibe- loved the ricotta toast (sourdough) perhaps my fave! Sent back the salad but they were so kind and gave us some broccolini on them as a replacement. Such a nice touch that goes a long way! Loved our waiter- he was a gem! Can't wait to go back and try more- especially the chocolate cake and lamb!

We LOVED Theodora, and are so glad to have such a gem in the neighborhood! We showed up on a rainy Saturday about 10 minutes before they opened, and they were already a bunch of people in line, but we were able to get seated as soon as the doors opened . Service was very friendly, and our waitress had a ton of good recommendations. Everything we had here was excellent, from the kubaneh (almost like a cinnamon roll but savory and with zaatar), an insanely good, smoky octopus, and a lamb flatbread. My husband ordered a beet dish, which was one of the best vegetables I've ever had - and I hate beets. We also had some excellent cocktails, including a clarified milk punch with Mezcal, that I still think about. overall, can't wait to come back!

I was really excited to try this place because of all the great reviews, but honestly nothing was all that great and it was pretty pricey. soft shell crab sandwich (special) 8/10 - the bread was pretty soggy because the pickled veg were shoved really deep into it, but the crab and tomato sauce were good Octopus 6/10 - not really crispy, kinda the same texture throughout the dish Broccolini 6/10 - it was okay Striped bass ceviche 5/10 - under seasoned, no punchy flavors you'd expect from a ceviche Overall I was pretty let down by the food, but the service was good and the interior vibe is nice
This review is for weekend dinner.
I can't compare directly to Miss Ada since the food is different, but I really enjoyed and recommend checking it out! There's a fairly large bar in the front that I *think* they reserve for walk-ins... it was pretty empty at the bar the entire time I was dining, so I'd definitely recommend calling / walking in if you can't snag a res. Ambiance / Service: elevated, but cozy. Warm lighting. I feel like you can come dressed in any attire. Service was great - shoutout to the gentleman with glasses and a mustache. Food: family style recommended. Recommended at least 1 dish per section of the menu for 2 people. We ordered 6 dishes plus dessert and it was plenty of food. -Big Eye Tuna: comes with 4. This was actually my least favorite dish and wouldn't order again. All you really taste is the cracker. -Hiramasa: really enjoyed. Fresh and light. Would order again. -Za' atar Kubaneh: looks like a cinnamon roll. Doughy, enjoyed the sauces. Would order again. -Wood Fired Broccolini: sauce almost tastes like a balsamic-y hollandaise. Pairs nicely with the octopus dish. Would order again. -Octopus: cooked perfectly, melts in your mouth. Has a slight smoky flavor. Would order again. -Lamb: comes with 4 slices on pita-like bread. Meat is tender, but on its own the meat doesn't have much flavor. But it tastes good with the side sauces. -Mini Jelly Doughnuts: light and fluffy. Really enjoyed, just wish they had more jelly.

This has been on my list since it opened and today was the day. It was absolutely superb. Every single ingredient is the best of the best; every dish full of phenomenal flavor and assembled to perfection. You can tell everything is done full out here. The food, the service, and the ambiance are all to the highest standard. The food is well worth the price. Can't wait to return and try a whole new set of dishes.

I have a notice stating that my bid has been accepted and is awaiting transfer. The reservation is for the 18th, but the “moderator” said he will confirm booking by the 28th. Is this an indicator that I may not have a reservation?

Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
