I've been to the Midland for afternoon tea on a couple of occasions now and this last visit was the worst by far. Still not diabolical by any means, hence the very decent 3 stars..but definitely not the seamless, luxury experience it once was. To me this place is a nod to the past, including the service style of times gone by. The day's of silver service and steam trains if you like. In comparison, this last trip felt like a hackney cab ride through Peckham. This time round we actually bought a voucher off groupon, Champagne afternoon tea for two for a very reasonable £35. I'm pretty sure that the champagne was actually Prosecco but it tasted nice enough and we got a small glass of madeira wine to start which was lovely. The main issue for me was the fact that upon arrival, we were left standing in the middle of a very open waiting area for a long time with staff walking past and simply ignoring us for a good 5 minutes. Awkward given that it was very obvious that we were waiting to be seated. I ended up approaching a staff member and asking them to see to us. Luxury experience? I think not. Once we were seated the service fluctuated depending on the waiter. The younger chap didn't bring us tea or come back when he said he would however Michael Laker, who's worked there for many, many years was as attentive and fabulous as always. It's people like him that make the Midland what it is (or was?) and it was sad to see that the standards seem to be slipping with the newer staff. I give Michael a straight 5 out of 5 stars every time, he's mastered the art of customer service. The food itself was good, good quality ingredients and interesting combinations of flavours. I preferred the cakes and sandwiches presented on the the silver cake trays as oppose to the newer wooden blocks they used this time round. I also would have preferred more savoury options as I felt the ratio was off with there being too much cake (blasphemy I know!), but that's just my personal taste. Overall an enjoyable evening but next time, I think I'll try somewhere else for afternoon tea.
