We had a day spa package which was use of the spa facilities, gym and a 25 min treatment. The overall experience was very nice, the relaxation suit was so lovely and the staff were very friendly. It all felt ver luxurious. The gym and pool are on the small side and the jacuzzi was out of order when we went, so I'm not going to give 5 stars, but it did make for a relaxing and refreshing experience. The hotel is a very luxurious hotel in a convenient location right near Deansgate.
Be the first to ReplyJust because it's old and stately doesn't mean it's good.
Reception was helpful. Restaurant service was rude and curt, and made me wonder if they were poorly trained or racist. The food was mediocre. Would not stay here again - but perhaps that is what they want.

They remodeled since I came here last 3 years ago and it was a great stay. Staff if friendly bar is nice.

We went for an afternoon tea to The Midland for a friend's birthday. A beautiful setting in the tea room - everything looked very appetising! The menu offers yoj a few variants of tea options, including vegan and vegetarian option. The cakes and scones were just amazing, nothing to fault. However, sandwiches were a bit of a let down - for a hefty price tag you would expect that the venue will match the good to the menu - however, there was no rye bread, rocket leaves, also we couldn't taste any truffle in the we sandwich (although the flavour was declared on the menu).

After picking up a very good deal with Expedia for just £79 per night using "secret prices" on the website, I decided to stay at The Midland hotel, an old and historic hotel in the heart of city on Peter Street, being close to Manchester Central, former train station now a convention centre, it is also close to the city centre by walking distance, or the St Peter's Square Metrolink Station which is basically right next to the hotel. The Midland has changed hands so many times since it was built in 1903, most recently switching from QHotels to Leonardo Royal, it has even been a Crowne Plaza, and has a great deal of history, to the fact it even warrants a Wikipedia page. It is a grand hotel, it is a stunning building in the city centre but as a hotel, it is barely average and the decor inside the rooms resembles something one would find on Gordon Ramsay's hotel hell with an awful colour scheme which was basically a vomit green/brown.Having stayed at the Hilton Manchester Deansgate for the few nights previous and moving here to try out The Midland while they were doing a very good offer, prices generally peak at close to double that on normal nights, was just a huge downgrade it was like when Leicester City hired Craig Shakespeare to replace manager Claudio Ranieri who won them the league.Check-in at the hotel didn't go too smoothly, it took far too long in my opinion to then be handed by the tangible key, which included an issue in booking breakfast - I rather wish I didn't book it at all now after a dreadful experience (see seperate review for Mr Cooper's) - £13 per person for guests or £20 if you don't book with reception for an awful breakfast. From entering the hotel, it did feel quite grand and luxury which you can tell from the lobby and reception area, where there are reception and concierge and outside the hotel, with it being an old building, but as I got into my room I was really shocked, the room seemed basic and far from luxury, and even had a broken headboard meaning every time I'd reach back, it would make a large and uncomfortable bang. I did manage to change rooms, the next room was only slightly better and still had many flaws I will mention, even down to the size of the bed which was really small for a hotel, the bed & pillows were hard and uncomfortable, causing me to struggle to relax and then sleep. The hotel staff seemed friendly, such as maintenance man Dave who I had a quick chat too as he helped explain the confusing air conditioning and the television, which was another problem with the room. The air condition and heating in the room are very ineffective and noisy. I had to ask for a radiator because the room was so cold - also a bad sign probably down to the size of the building. Even the combination of both couldn't heat up the room, on a cold wintery January evening to the point I had to wear a thick jacket to sleep, which I wouldn't normally - there were no blankets either, leaving me to suffer in the freezing room. Disappointing! The television, on the other hand, had a confusing setup, it showed a range of channels and had basic UK Freeview, but it also listed channels (which couldn't be played obviously) which weren't available such as Sky Sports 1 and 3, which I was told the hotel cut so they would not have to pay for it anymore, and even now defunct channels such as Pricedrop, for me this shown laziness in failure to update the television, as this channel has been defunct since April 2014, which is nearly five-years. 5 years without an update and making sure everything is running smoothly is just shockingly poor.Plug sockets around the room were minimal, once again probably down to the size of the building with most of them being built inside the desk, which is probably the only part of the room I actually liked.I was told the mini bar in the fridge was no longer in use which is why it was locked, once again another confusing policy as the mini bar takes up space, they did later bring a fridge up but the fridge just looked old and bashed in. which also was how I'd describe the radiator they had to bring up as the rooms didn't have any - I can only presume they are making the temperature the only reason the rooms aren't like Hell. This is a grand hotel, but the rooms are ugly, basic and freezing cold in most regards, with ugly plain walls and a small television, I can't help but feel they are spending more time, money and space of the hotel in the main areas including the spa, lobby and corridors, and that means they're simply forgetting about a room. The main thing about a hotel is that the rooms are nice, comfortable and can deliver a good nights sleep - none of those applies here, so I sadly feel The Midland Manchester deserves a single one-star rating, especially down to the point where if my house would have been in a condition where I could have stayed there (it isn't due to renovations), I would have much preferred to go home.

Be the first to ReplyAn old school grand traditional historical looking hotel
An old school grand traditional historical looking hotel located right by the Manchester Picadilly station in St Peter's Square that offers gym, conferences, spas, restaurant, concierge, and other services that hotels like this offer. Good for those who like class and old school grandeur. Details: Gym: Quite an excellent gym. There is a running area on treadmills upstairs for those who like that. I personally am a weights and machines person and circuits training is my thing. Minus the step bench I usually use, they had weights that go up to 50 kg. They had yoga balls, weighted ropes, boxing bag, mats, boxing gloves, all the typical weight machines. Usually open til 8 pm at night, so you jet laggers be aware. Spa costs money but I believe pool is free of charge Restaurant: They had a Mr. Cooper, which is the restaurant buffet style restaurant that offered fares such as lamb chops and potatoes- English fare. A little pricy but for those who have little time to travel out and search for food, this is a good place to go. Service: Typical concierge. Can send people up to fix things for you pretty quicky. Room amenities: Have a heated towel rack for you to dry things and your towels are always warm, lights are controlled by your hotel card, TV has decent channels but I would have preferred CNN if they had it. Large closet to hang your clothes. Provides complimentary cinnamon or chocolate chip cookie crackers, english tea, and water. Hair dryer included. Only complaint is that their goose down blankets get SUPER HOT at night. So if you're someone who likes heavy blankets, good, otherwise be prepared to sweat in the middle of the night b/c these are heavy! Stairs/Accessibility- i thought the stairs were a little confusing if you're someone planning to be exercise prone, so be careful your first time. It is very very close to all the tourist attractions. It is smack in the middle of the city so to go to Chinatown, Gay Village, and Manchester places are easy

I've been to the Midland for afternoon tea on a couple of occasions now and this last visit was the worst by far. Still not diabolical by any means, hence the very decent 3 stars..but definitely not the seamless, luxury experience it once was. To me this place is a nod to the past, including the service style of times gone by. The day's of silver service and steam trains if you like. In comparison, this last trip felt like a hackney cab ride through Peckham. This time round we actually bought a voucher off groupon, Champagne afternoon tea for two for a very reasonable £35. I'm pretty sure that the champagne was actually Prosecco but it tasted nice enough and we got a small glass of madeira wine to start which was lovely. The main issue for me was the fact that upon arrival, we were left standing in the middle of a very open waiting area for a long time with staff walking past and simply ignoring us for a good 5 minutes. Awkward given that it was very obvious that we were waiting to be seated. I ended up approaching a staff member and asking them to see to us. Luxury experience? I think not. Once we were seated the service fluctuated depending on the waiter. The younger chap didn't bring us tea or come back when he said he would however Michael Laker, who's worked there for many, many years was as attentive and fabulous as always. It's people like him that make the Midland what it is (or was?) and it was sad to see that the standards seem to be slipping with the newer staff. I give Michael a straight 5 out of 5 stars every time, he's mastered the art of customer service. The food itself was good, good quality ingredients and interesting combinations of flavours. I preferred the cakes and sandwiches presented on the the silver cake trays as oppose to the newer wooden blocks they used this time round. I also would have preferred more savoury options as I felt the ratio was off with there being too much cake (blasphemy I know!), but that's just my personal taste. Overall an enjoyable evening but next time, I think I'll try somewhere else for afternoon tea.
Be the first to ReplyThis was a let down of a hotel.
Let's start off with the positives, since there weren't many. They are located not too far from the train station (about a ten minute walk, maybe more if you're struggling with luggage). Their staff is beyond hospitable and the neighboring restaurant, Mr. Coopers, delivers delicious food and cocktails. Now for the bad...although the hotel is very grandiose looking on the outside, the inside left much to be desired. The rooms are old and dirty, with a real emphasis on dirty. I wiped down the toilet seat when I first walked in and it's clear that it had not been cleaned or maybe even used in a while because the paper came up black with dust. The mattress was probably the most uncomfortable mattress I've ever slept on, you could feel the coils and some other hard shit through the sheets. It was so tough that at times I had to wake up and reposition myself because a portion of my body would fall asleep (prickly feeling and all). There was no outlet near the bed which really wasn't convenient at all. The remote control was so dirty I threw it in a plastic ziploc bag to use. And for an expensive hotel, I couldn't for the life of me understand why they felt they had to permanently chain the iron to the ironing board. To add insult to injury, I asked concierge if they could book a taxi for me to the airport as I had an early flight. I confirmed several times with them that the taxi would accept credit card, which they assured me every single time I asked. Thankfully the taxi was there at the time requested but sure enough when we arrived to the airport he told me that it was a cash only taxi. I WAS OUT OF CASH! I literally had to put together the few pounds I had left and gave him $20 to cover the rest (which obviously didn't cover the 25 pound cost). The taxi driver was very nice but fuck man, that's not the kind of shit I want to deal with at 4 am.Thanks, but no thanks, Midland.
Be the first to ReplyGood for a drink, and a bit of a chill out.
I do feel The Midland suffers a bit from its own reputation, it was once the best in Manchester, but what with new places popping up all the time in Manchester it will always be hard to stay ahead. Some of my friends had the afternoon tea here and said it was excellent, but I am not sure I can really give them credit for that as the two times I have been here they have managed to mess up simple things like drinks orders. I do like the inside of the turkish tea/bar area it is very pretty but that can't make up for the things they have not quite got right on my visits.
Be the first to ReplyWent to the spa day here.
Treatments were great and staff attentive. The lunch was shocking - absolutely tiny, not what we ordered and even though I sent the soup back twice it was freezing everytime. The lunch area was cramped and if you were late from a treatment you still had to stick to your allotted time. The chill out area very nice but the water stations were untidy and often empty. Swimming was nice but a little cool. Massage was lovely as was the rasul treatment. The showers were lovely and the products in them but my boyfriend said all the shampoo was gone in the men's. We were promised champagne but didn't get any and charged for coffee. My advice - don't pay for a spa day that includes lunch, go for the treatments and pay for lunch upstairs at me coopers - it'llCost you the same.

Came for a spa day, has to be one of the nicest spas I've been to. Located in the basement of the hotel, you can get down by lift or stairs. On arrival we were given a gown and a towel. They asked us to fill in a treatment form and gave us headphones to select the music we would listen to during our treatment, they could have explained this part a little better. They then asked us to select what we would like for lunch, we opted for the unhealthy option of afternoon tea.The spa had good facilities with a jacuzzi, waterfall feature, Himalayan salt sauna, steam room and a rasul as wel as a relaxation room with tea and water. I food that the tea was a bit over brewed and heated by candles underneath. My treatment was amazing, very relaxing and enjoyable. I'm not 100% sure if it was the same music as there seemed to be a lot of clashing. We then went on to have our tea, which was well presented with a huge pot of tea that they refilled for us.We had to ask for our free gift and smoothie. But the smoothie was pretty horrible it wasn't cold and made the mistake of having it after our tea. I would recommend this spa and would come back again.
