The Huntington Rose Garden Tea Room San Marino Reviews from The Last Year
I love the Huntington's Rose Garden Tea Room and so glad
I love the Huntington's Rose Garden Tea Room and so glad they offer a gluten free menu. The Gluten Free scones are so yummy and I would never know they were GF. However the buckwheat bread is very dense and very flavorful. It is so flavorful, it over powers the flavors of the fillings. Today, I just used a fork and ate only the filling of the sandwiches. The idea of using buckwheat bread seems like a healthy choice. I would prefer to taste the filling of tea sandwiches. Canyon Bakehouse bread makes a good sandwich bread. Hoping the staff will see my review.

Great ambiance! It's a long walk from the entrance so wear comfortable shoes. Think 10 minute walk and it's mostly sunny. Indoor AC and we got the traditional which is more than enough food . I liked the steak sandwich and the cucumber. The signature and earl grey tea are fairly similar. They are able to accommodate dietary restrictions. The food was overall ok, the service was solid. The ambiance and library setting were the topper!
We have been coming to the Huntington Botanical Gardens for
We have been coming to the Huntington Botanical Gardens for years. We also visited the old Tea Room prior to the renovation and loved it! Since the completion of the renovation we have now been back for tea two times and feel that the patio space adjacent to the Shakespeare Garden is a significant upgrade to this iconic space. The patio is roomy with nice space between the tables. The Shakespeare Garden wraps around this dining area with nice greenery separating the two and creating a more private feeling as you enjoy the wonderful tea experience. We settled in and prepared to enjoy this delightful tea festival. We ordered the Traditional Tea option which included the tea selection accompanied by seasonal house made scones served with Devonshire Cream, Lemon Curd, and Cranberry Orange Relish. The menu also included a selection of savory and sweet selections presented on a delicate tiered serving set. The savory sandwiches included Cucumber Sandwich with Dill Cream and Peppercress, Turkey Cranberry Salad Sandwich, Smoked Salmon with Dill Cream Cheese and Caviar, Sea Salt and Tellicherry Pepper crusted NY Strip-loin Sandwich, Curried Carrots with Golden Raisin Sandwich, Vidalia Sweet Onion and Sea Salt on Garden Herb Crusted Bread. The sweet collection was Ginger Cake with Quince Compote and Cream Cheese, Chocolate Brown Butter Almond Cake, Belgian Chocolate and Sea Salt Caramel Tart, and Seasonal Fruit Tart. Every person in the party received one of each selection. We found all of the savory and sweet options during both of our visits to be delicious. Our servers each time were welcoming, friendly, and very helpful. The teas were fantastic as well including a variety of traditional teas, green teas, tisanes, and seasonal teas. We absolutely loved our visits to the renovated Tea Room and found the outdoor patio to be a wonderful location to enjoy all of the delights on the menu.
Such a lovely tea time with my mom! We got the Huntington
Such a lovely tea time with my mom! We got the Huntington Tea which was absolutely worth the upgrade. The champagne was a generous pour and the lobster roll was delicious. The service was impeccable and we got seated exactly at our reservation time. I love how they did the remodel. When the weather is a little cooler I'd love to come have tea outside.
Visiting the Huntington Gardens for their Rose Garden Tea
Visiting the Huntington Gardens for their Rose Garden Tea Service was a delightful first-time experience. The ample parking is a plus, but weekends can be crowded, so plan accordingly. A walk around the garden is an absolute must, either before or after your tea service. Note that there is a $35 entrance fee for each guest. The Rose Garden is easily accessible with a short 5-10 minute walk, just follow the signs. However, with the garden's vast expanse, it's easy to get a little lost. Our server, Kelan, made the experience even better with his professionalism, enthusiasm, and engaging conversation. We chose to sit outside and enjoyed the beautiful view. This spot is highly recommended for dates or outings with friends. You don't have to dine at the restaurants; picnics and dogs are welcome on the property. Additionally, the Rose Garden offers the tea service to go, allowing you to enjoy it anywhere within the grounds.
I came to the Huntington's rose garden tea room on a
I came to the Huntington's rose garden tea room on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. I arrived early to my reservation and was greeted and seated by the friendly hostess. My daughter and I had the children's tea and the traditional tea served with an apple pie and early grey. We knew we were in for a treat when we took the first bite of our scones. All the sandwiches and pastries were decadent and the perfect portion that allowed us to try different items. We were seated in the main tea room which had beautiful natural light, made brighter by the pastel yellow walls. Absolutely will be back!
This used to be a treasure.
Then it had an $11 million facelift. Gone is the quaint buffet to which one could make unlimited trips for delicious food. Gone is the cottage atmosphere. This is like the sandwich shop off a hotel lobby, with gray paneled walls and high ceilings and cold marble floors. Nothing is cozy. The vibe is uptight. The worst part though is the tea and food. Let's start with the tea. It used to be each member of the party got their own large pot of deliciously steeped tea from loose leaf. Not now. It's a small (2 cups max) nondescript white pot with one tea bag from a commercial vendor, Art of Tea, and hot water. A tea bag. At a tea room. If you want additional tea, they will bring you, wait for it, additional hot water to add to your single, already used tea bag. It was like a sit-com. The food was inedible. The scones, which used to be delicious and unlimited, were tasteless and not homemade drop scones like good tea scones always are. We were given "accoutrements" (server's word, not ours) to share in tiny vessels - lemon curd, cream and marmalade - so little it would not have worked for one of us to use for two scones, much less three of us. We ordered the cheese platter for $16 extra (seeing right away that it had been stripped from the usual fare leaving just a few sandwiches and sweets - note the salad was also stripped out in the remodel - also extra now). It randomly has berries at the top like an afterthought. The cheeses - only three - white cheddar, manchego and brie. The brie I bit into was rotten. I don't mean it was a bad brand. I mean that I believe it was literally rotten based on the gray color and putrid smell. There were no crackers. Not a one. A few strange very thin greasy toast pieces. Yucky. The actual tea platter had sandwiches that vaguely resembled the old ones. Minus the fillings. Carrot curry on pumpernickel was a shining star of the buffet - this is brown bread with a hint of carrot and curry juice. Same with the egg onion sandwich and the cucumber sandwich. Mostly just slightly stale bread. It is so odd because the price has just about doubled and the food one receives has more than halved. The desserts did not look made in-house and were tiny half-bites. Our server offered to box up our uneaten cheese platter and our tea sandwiches. We declined. I hope there is another remodel down the road to return this place to its former glory.
This place was great, server was amazing! So on point timed
This place was great, server was amazing! So on point timed everything perfectly. Left tea and was actually full! I feel like I'm hungry still at alot of other places. Had many options, did make reservations about 6 weeks out. Super pretty place, views of the garden everywhere. Would for sure go back!
Made reservations in advance to correspond with your
Made reservations in advance to correspond with your tickets for the Huntington. Tour finished around 10.30, tea room opens at 11. My reservation was for 12. I called and asked if we can sit inside (only option was outside when I made reservations) and could we be seated earlier, and was told 'yes' to both requests. Got there at 11.30 and they said they can seat inside but closer to 12. Very pretty inside and AC was working well. Only issue was tables were a little close together (didn't need newborn at next table right in my space). Seated at almost 12. Server was Victoria (my mom's name). Was very pleasant and kindly complied with substitutions I requested. Tea was great, scones and spreads good. Sandwiches: lobster good though had large chunks of something in it, lox our fave. Cucumber was fine. Beef dry (could've used mayo or more mustard). Turkey tasted like chicken salad. Sweets were fine (not out of this world). Prosecco enjoyable. View of roses was lovely. We got a to go box bc no way to finish everything and that's totally fine. Could've eaten spreads solo!
Checked out the iconic and renovated tea room after waiting
Checked out the iconic and renovated tea room after waiting months for an open date. Enjoyed a nice afternoon outside on the patio sipping an impressive selection of tea and enjoying the sweet and savory finger foods. Service was good - our server allowed us to move to the opposite side of the patio when it was audibly clear that our neighbors had been partaking liberally from the bubbly - and the food was decent. Was it worth it? I've been to the original tea room many years ago, and I will say the [$11 million!] renovation definitely shows, and it's a lot more interesting an addition to the grounds than yet another random section in the Chinese garden. The tea selection is also delicious, from what I tried. But be aware that the proximity to the rose garden is mostly advantageous during certain seasons, namely when the roses are in bloom. And a quick check indicates that seats are still booked out at least a month, so while the hype has definitely died down, it's still not a place you can go without some planning. Finally, though I came on a membership, if you are not a member of the Huntington, it's worth reminding that you'll be paying for both the entry to the garden and either the $62 or $74/person for tea. So highly recommended to make an afternoon out of it and enjoy the garden before or after tea. Overall it may be the nicest place I've had afternoon tea in Southern California, and bonus that it's at one of my favorite local spots, the Huntington.
Post remodel: the bathrooms are mixed gender.
You walk in the main door. There is a row of sinks on the right and a row of stalls on the left. As I entered a man came out of a stall. We made eye contact. He was embarassed and so was I. I will never go back and I would never allow my daughter in there. Nice afternoon tea apart from a thin slice of beef on a slice of bread. Never seen that anywhere before. Grogeous grounds.
Cant complain about the service and the beautiful gardens
Cant complain about the service and the beautiful gardens but too expensive and food quality is sub par. Ticket for the park plus 75 per person comes to over 100 dollars per person after tips and taxes. Food is really underwhelming and the china and tea is low quality. They use tea bags not leaf. And they dnt even cut the crust off those girly finger sandwiches. Wtf. The tea service at the Langham down the street is much much better. Came for the experience with wife and daughter left hungry and disappointed. Would not be back. Give me a good dry aged steak and a beer over this fancy english crap any day.
A rejuvenating place to recharge the batteries.
Expansive gardens, a conservatory, library and galleries. Children have an interactive garden all their own to explore. Chines and Japanese cherry blossoms are in full bloom.
Amazing scenery and amazing price for what you get.
A lot of Tea rooms are expensive, $80+ For $62, the selection was amazing. Recommend sitting outside for a nice view, You do need to pay to enter the park however, which is where the tea room is situated. The service was really friendly, this man with curly hair took a photo for us and I could tell he was there to make our experience extra nice and comforting.

What a gem of a place! The petite sandwiches and cakes were wonderful! A special shout out to Efrim for his outstanding service at our table.
Although it rained and no roses yet.
I definitely saw the potential for the gard. The tea room was an exquisite experience. The food, service and ambiance was great. The art exhibit was just as nice. Me and my girls had the best time. I will definitely go back with a different group of ladies.
Exquisite.
It's pricey for sure but the quality matches. Our server was so helpful, friendly and professional. She even gave us fresh cups of our chosen tea blend in to-go cups when we left. The women hostess' could learn a thing or two from our gal. They were cold and inhospitable towards us when we were checking in this past Sat at 1pm.
It's been a long time since the last time - and in between
It's been a long time since the last time - and in between there was a whole pandemic and a complete remodeling of the tea room and of its concept. For some reasons, the rating on YELP is fairly low. I/we found it absolutely wonderful. Both the inside and outside of the place invite for a relaxing atmosphere. We were seated at the edge of the outside patio with unhindered view into the surrounding plants. The buffet from the old times had been abandoned and the more appropriate structure offers various choices. Suffice to say that all items we received were delicious. The service was charming. So glad to see this opportunity back. The only somewhat unrelated issue is and will increasingly be: The parking spaces to not suffice to accommodate the expanding visitor streams...!
I really wanted to love the Tea Garden.
I'm a big fan of the Huntington overall but stopped going to the Tea Garden eons ago because the food was disappointing. Flash forward to today: I had high hopes for the redesigned menu, especially with the new and improved building, but the food was not great. It gives me great pain to write this review, because so much could be done in this beautiful updated space set in the gorgeous Rose and Herb Gardens. There is nothing more sad than lost potential. For the $62 price point, the food was a thumbs down. The scones were flat out grocery quality. The standard desserts didn't wow, and I have had too many drool-worthy, delicious experiences at other CA museum restaurants to give these small treats anything more than a 3 star rating. Savory stuff: our salad (an add-on item) was nicely dressed but only one out of the several tea sandwiches was noteworthy. My teas were very good. Our server was WONDERFUL, but the wait team's attentiveness was marred by the reception host. At the end of our meal, the host literally noted that we were paying our bill, yet still proceeded to tell us that they would need our table soon. Whatever he said, he made me feel small. Not slick, dude. To top it off, a number of tables were empty and I saw zero wait when we exited. Please retrain your hosts. I still have great hope for the Tea Garden. I'll try it again if they make changes.
My friend and I had the traditional tea.
The layout is a huge improvement from the old tea room. The old tea room was very crowded, tables too close together. Plenty of space so you're not bumping chairs. I love the prints sprinkled throughout the main room. I'm not a huge fan of tea, but I enjoyed the jasmine blueberry tea. Scones were first up. We each had one and the sweet and savory assortment of food came soon thereafter. The staff offers to take pictures. My favorite was the salmon sandwich. I didn't try the curry carrot sandwich. I think I remember it from the old tea room. My favorite sweet was the fruit tart . Honestly, the traditional tea is enough food unless you want Prosecco.
Beautiful setting, decent food, spotty service.
This was our second visit to the renovated tea room. Same experiences both times. Very nice overall but the service really needs tweaking. The hosts are just not very welcoming or even friendly. We arrived at our reserved time on the dot but waited over 15 minutes to be seated even though there were plenty of tables. When we inquired the host sort of shrugged as though we were annoying her. Same experience last time. They really need to retrain or replace the host staff. The server, on the other hand, was very friendly and kind. We did feel rushed, and the check was plopped on the table before we finished eating. Overall, you go for the decent food and beautiful setting and try to ignore the service blips.
Overpriced, mediocre tea; terrible management
I went to tea at the Huntington Gardens' new tea house with 28 friends on Friday, December 15. The tea and snacks were fine overall: the Huntington signature tea is good, the rose tea is delicious, the earl grey creme is excellent, and the greedy tea with blueberry is very good. We had two varieties of scones: a weirdly sweet butterscotch scone that was not pleasant at all and a decent orange cranberry scone. The scones were served with fig jam, a too-sweet lemon curd, and chantilly cream (instead of the more traditional clotted cream). The sandwiches were fine. They were largely dry and mostly bread. The folks at the Huntington would be well-served visiting the Getty or other similar teas to see what the competition offers. (Spoiler alert: the Getty is far superior, at a similar price point.) The sweets were also just okay. And when I asked for honey for my tea (instead of sugar), I was brought out packets of Heinz. HEINZ HONEY. AT THE HUNTINGTON. For shame. The entire thing just kind of fell flat. We also ordered a cheese platter for $15, for which they used really basic cheeses and some dry toast. It was fairly disappointing. To accompany the tea, 4 of the 6 of us at our table ordered soup. The soup was on the thicker side and it was not particularly flavorful or well-seasoned. It just kind of fell flat. It was also not as velvety as soup often is. It looked and tasted like it was blended but not taken through a sieve. All of that said, we were there largely for the company of our friends and for the lovely scenery, so we wouldn't have docked the Huntington for any of the above were it not for what happened at the end. Even though we told the receptionist at check-in that two members of our party would not be able to attend (one was in the hospital and the other was with a friend who was dying of cancer), WE WERE CHARGED FOR THE TWO PEOPLE WHO WERE NOT THERE. Better still, we were charged without notice, after they presented us with a bill that was correct for our table and did not include the two missing friends. So they made it seem like they were charging the right amounts, but when they brought our credit cards back, the charges were greatly in excess of what was on the bill they had brought to our table. This is because they had unilaterally decided to add not only the charges for our two friends who couldn't make it, but also for another table entirely. WHAT?! When we brought this to their attention, they became belligerent. The manager on duty, Gina, told us that we were "lucky" that they served us at all, adding that they did us a favor by accommodating our group. Nevermind that we reserved months in advance, and nevermind that they're in the business of ... serving tea in the tea room, and we weren't any different than the other guests at the tea room at that time. This clearly demonstrated to us what she thought of her job and the tea room at the Huntington. So much for customer service, and for decency. I don't recommend the Huntington, I don't recommend the overpriced, mediocre tea service, I don't recommend the Tea Room, and I absolutely do not recommend Gina. I do recommend baking classes for the Tea Room, and I recommend classes on customer service for Gina and anyone of her ilk. No thank you.

Great Service - amazing dinner!!
Read about the site in NYT and bought a reservation at Mother Wolf in LA 2 days later. Worked great and the food was amazing!!!
Worked perfectly!
Got the reservation (that I couldn't get anywhere else) and was able to entertain a group of friends at the infamous Bern's Steakhouse.
Got into Nobu Malibu
Wonderful! My parents are visiting and we have wanted to go to Nobu Malibu for years. I tried getting a reservation myself but it was next to impossible. So glad I was able to buy a reservation on appointment trader for a decent price!
Very easy
Was very hesitant going into this experience but am glad to say that it worked out very well ! will definitely use appointment trader in the future
Fabulous Lunch
I was veeeeeerry skeptical that this would work, particularly at a restaurant as hard to get into as Nobu Malibu, and it was perfect! We had lunch outside on the patio and it was fabulous!
Great reviewer team
Just wanted to take a second to shout out the reviewer team. Even though they probably review hundreds of listings and bids a day, they still take the time to leave great comments and respond relatively quickly. Thanks!
Incredible
I got a reservation to Don Angie, which I've been trying to book for weeks! I am very happy with this service.
Best platform out there!
Super simple, easy, and fast to secure reservations for hard-to-get restaurants and locations!
This app is life changing
This app has opened my world up to so many wonderful new experiences I would never have the chance to have without access to this awesome app! 10/10!
Worked perfectly
Was a little nervous at first but was pleased to see that the booking went through flawlessly.
Highly recommended.
Success on Short Notice
Was able to snag an indoor table at Don Angie through an absolutely seamless worry-free process.

Quick table in Miami
I didn’t have my hopes high as it was a party of 4. In 24 hours I had a carbone reservation available! I was very happy as my family really wanted to come here

perfect
Worked well, got me into a restaurant with no availability
I was skeptical, and I still don't really know how they managed to find this hard-to-find reservation, but it was a win-win from my point of view, and I'll use this service again.
Last minute reservation for Delilah Las Vegas
Got a last minute reservation, dinner for 2 at Delilah Las Vegas: super impressed! The process was simple, transaction seamless. We had an amazing time! Couldn’t be happier! 😍
It works!
Ok at this point I've attended a reservation purchased on AT by a friend and sold a reservation personally. Both worked pretty smoothly, nothing sketchy about it. A few areas for improvement including a way to more directly communicate between buyers and sellers, but the app always seems to be in development. AT customer support is really(!) responsive and helpful too if you have questions!
Money transfer
As a seller, I like the fact i have the ability now to transfer money out of my AT account and into a bank account. Makes getting the money much easier then the process before.
Love this app
Got to go to places otherwise unreachable
Easy Access
Very easy to get into one of the hardest restaurants to reserve in New York.
Whose name will my reservation be under when I arrive at the venue?
It can be under your name or a name you choose! Some reservation offers already include the AppointmentTrader Transfer Service which will transfer the reservation in to your name. If its not included you can add it on after buying the reservation for a small fee. One thing on that though: As many reservations become available at last minute, taking a reservation in someone else name is quick and great for privacy. Most reservations on AT are listed with a virtual phone number, so all you need to do is present the phone number at the hostess stand and you are good to go!
Payouts Blocked Because of Sell Through Rate
Does anyone know how AT plans to handle cases where a seller is quitting the platform but has a sell through rate <25%? The error message I got said to fill more bids or find other ways to increase the rate.
Is AT really going to block sellers from withdrawing their money? Especially revenue made before the sell through rate was introduced??

I will give you 50% of ALL of my PROFITS if you teach me how to make profits?
LOL. Thank you The New Yorker.
Appointment
Transferring reservations is not supported in AT. Why not just use the name in the AT screenshot?
Buyers interested in Bern's Steakhouse: PLEASE READ
Same goes for 4 Charles and I Sodi
Prepaid Reservation Fee
Agreed. Ultimately not addressing this month after month is clearly resulting in a drop in certain venue’s rankings & sales.
Congrats on 3 mil

Need to cancel a bid, not getting a response… how do I do it?
Click on "Take off the Market Option" in your portfolio
Working on your bid?
Your bid has been “matched” with a reservation. From the time a reservation has been located, the seller of the reservation must connect with moderator to give transfer information for reservation. If the seller;however, does NOT respond to reservation transfer, then your bid is reprocessed and returns to the first step, which is connecting your request to a reservation.
Process after bid is accepted.
Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
Where do the Reservations on AppointmentTrader come from?
Mostly from people who don't need their reservations or appointments any longer. AT has no relationship with places listed and acts as a platform connecting buyers and sellers making sure that listed reservations are real and that privacy is not compromised when transacting.
What happens if my bid expires unanswered?
Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.
