Sugo Italian Pasta Bar Santa Cruz Reviews from The Last Year
Honestly probably some of the worst italian food i've ever
Honestly probably some of the worst italian food i've ever had which is quite unfortunate given the nice ambiance and staff. I got the spaghetti alle vongole and it was beyond disappointing for the price. Little to no flavor at all. My partner got a dish with shrimp and i guess the cook may have left for a bathroom break while they were cooking because they were incredibly overcooked to the point of being inedible. Neither dishes had much flavor at all.
It's our go to Italian spot.
The portions are large enough to share. We often share a caesar salad and the eggplant parmigiana and it's plenty. The service is good, especially if you get Neri. The food is excellent..not gourmet, just solid well prepared home-style Italian cooking. The ambiance out on the heated outside deck is less crowded than the smaller inside room. All in all, this is a good value and a neighborhood gem.

Service & food was impeccable! The Carbonara was exceptional. What a special meal for everyone in our party!

Just fantastic in every way! Convenient parking, personable and excellent waitstaff, wonderful food. The store front does not indicate the level of excellence achieved within. My lasagna was pillowy, moist, flavorful, filling and a good value. My daughter very much enjoyed her clams and linguine. We wanted to fight each other over the freshly baked bread!

We had a wonderful dining experience at this Italian restaurant! The fresh pasta was a standout, deliciously prepared and full of flavor. The staff was exceptionally friendly and attentive, making us feel right at home. The owner even took the time to chat with us, adding a personal touch to our meal. It was a fantastic birthday celebration, and we can't wait to come back for another memorable meal!
Excellent place.
Service impeccable. Fresh baked bread. Caponata was superb. One of the best risotto del mare I have ever had. Packed a little heat too. The bucatini amitriciana was also great. Tiramisu was upper level.

My wife and I came to Sugo for our first meal out as a married couple after hearing about it on Reddit of all places! It was such a fantastic all-around experience. It's hole-in-the-wall appearance belies the really impressive quality of food. I highly recommend the bruschetta with fresh mozzarella as an appetizer. The fresh bread before the meal was delicious. The chicken parmesan was an excellent choice for an entrée. Our waitress was friendly and made time to chat with us on the Sunday afternoon we came in. It wasn't too crowded and we had a nice, comfortable seat by the window.
Had a great dinner here.
We had chicken picatta and alfredo with chicken and wild mushrooms, ravioli and a pesto dish; all delicious. Service was good, very personable people and a wide choice on the menu. The ingredients were fresh and nicely prepared. We sat on the patio which was a pleasant experience. It was my birthday, and they gave me a fantastic tiramasu with a candle - so nice! We ordered the gelato and sorbet for dessert. All were excellent. I would highly recommend this restaurant!
Excellent house made pasta and bread and friendly service.
They attended to our disability accommodation request gracefully on a busy night.
Had a great meal with family at Sugo.
I ordered the caesar salad and their pasta special which was creste di gallo with porcini mushrooms and sausage. Both were great. Wifey had the flatbread with sausage and mushrooms while the kid had a little of each. Our family ordered the eggplant parmigiana, the carbonara, and Margherita flatbread. Service was attentive and food arrived quickly. We sat in the back patio which we were nervous about because it was a bit brisk in the evening but with the heaters, we were nice and toasty. Would definitely go back if/when in the area.
Special Place for Authentic Italian Food
We had a lovely pre-concert dinner with friends. The atmosphere is cozy and warm. The service was outstanding and the food was authentic, Italian with lots of choices. We started with the Caesar salad, complete with anchovies. The salad portions are healthy and dressed appropriately. We had the following dishes, Eggplant Parmesan, Beef Lasagne, Spaghetti Carbonara and the Vegetarian Pizza. There were no complaints amongst our party! The food was served hot and fresh and truly delicious. We finished up our meal with the house coffee, (so rich and aromatic), and pistachio gelato. We cannot wait to return to try out other items on the menu, including some of the mouthwatering specials. Thanks for adding to a wonderful evening.
Great food in a cozy location
Excellent food and very nice service. We ate on the patio at night which was very cozy with the heaters. It’s a small restaurant so reservations are recommended.
Straight across the board "mid," as my kids would say.
It's a very small dining room, which is totally fine, but there were a couple of parties who didn't seem to realize they were sitting directly across from the people they were talking to. They were SO loud and annoying, and my husband and I had to repeat ourselves several times throughout the dinner because we couldn't hear each other. That's how loud it was. Sodas are served from a can, which I never like because then I have to pay for every refill (or so I assume, I didn't ask for a refill tonight), plus I prefer the taste of soda from a fountain. There was bread brought out, which was good, but there was no butter offered. There is oil and vinegar on the table, and I know a lot of people like that, but we don't, so we ate dry bread. The minestrone soup was very odd, not like any minestrone I've had before. Broth was a bit watery and ingredients were lentils, zucchini, carrots and broccoli. Like big stalks of it. I've never had broccoli in minestrone before. My husband got fettuccine with pesto, I got it with Alfredo. Both were just okay. The sauces (even though they're made with cream) were definitely on the dryer side. Nothing creamy or flavorful about either of them. We got desserts, and I ordered the cannoli. I love cannolis, but again, it was just okay. I've had better. The texture of the cream was a little grainy. Our server was very nice, but not very attentive. Our soups sat on the table even though we told her we were done with them, and the tables are tiny so they were sort of in the way. They weren't moved until our food came, which was about an hour into our time there. Overall it wasn't awful, but it wasn't great either and I probably won't be back.
I only gave a 3 for these reasons.
Bolognese was very bland. Margarita pizza was great. Chocolate cake was nothing like the photos and wasn't a cake it was like mousse. Unfortunately disappointing for a first try.
Delicious food, pleasant wait staff.
The focaccia and smoked salmon appetizer was delicious. Large portions make it a good value as well. We'll be back!
Great place! I totally recommend.
Everything made to order and love the pasta bar!
100% recommended
