Packhorse Inn Moulton Newmarket Reviews from The Last Year
Ploughman's dilemma.
Recently ordered the ploughman's and was very disappointed with it. It's the first time I have had a ploughman's where the main ingredient was a sausage roll. This was accompanied by 2 slivers of cheese, a thin slice of sourdough halved, a pickled onion halved, a tiny sprinkle of lettuce and a pot of what I believe to be a mayo. On reflection I should have sent it back. My wife pointed out that the sausage roll and mayo were listed at £5.50 on the menu, which meant the rest cost £8.50!! Surely a ploughman's is meant to be chunky cheese and bread, salad, ham & pickle? Come on Packhorse you can do better than this. Fortunately my wife had ordered some chunky chips which helped make the meal seem more substantial than it was.
Lovely lunch in the sunshine
My wife and I enjoyed a delicious 2 course lunch at The Packhorse on Saturday. The revamp has really worked inside but the good weather meant that we were able to eat in the garden. The food was top notch as was the service. Our waitress, Georgia, was very attentive. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area.
Great Pub - well worth a visit
Beautiful pub situated in the wonderful countryside in Moulton, Suffolk. We visited as part of our Newmarket Racing weekend and were not disappointed with the standard of the environment, quality of the food and beverages, ambiance and great service from the staff. A special mention for a member of staff, the fabulous Max, both of our visits were enhanced by his attention to detail and great customer service. A credit to the company. Well worth a visit if you are in the area 😁
Lovely place
Had 2 night stay here , what a lovey place. Accommodation was excellent, rooms are lovely , spotlessly clean, and comfortable. Food was really good , evening meal and breakfast. The staff are so friendly and helpful A special mention for Lauren who served us an evening meal. Lovely person , so confident for a young person of 17. We will definitely be back
A great find!!
Lovely accommodation, friendly staff, great food. Overall a really great experience. Special mention to Lauren, a lovely young lady.
Worth the mileage!
This restaurant came from a recommendation, and it didn’t disappoint!! Great choice on the menu, and each of us had something different… we all loved our choices and my only complaint was I couldn’t fit in a pudding! Really nice relaxed atmosphere and great staff, very efficient and friendly. Really loved it there and was worth the mileage!!
Fantastic stay.
Fantastic 1 night stay. Great room, great team and fantastic dinner and breakfast. Just wish we lived closer. Recommended by a friend of the owner and we were not disappointed. The sharing steak was cooked to perfection.
Very Disappointed !!
Very, very poor rude, unfriendly service. We live locally and decided to try this expensive pub/hotel after hearing about the refurb. Upon arriving we was given a table in the empty restaurant. One of my party wanted a large vodka and tonic and the bar girl tried to put it in a half pint lager glass, my friend said can he have it in a bowl glass where you can put lots of ice in and the whole drink. The girl said we do not have those type of glasses which is utterly ridiculous for a place this size. So he had to drink a large vodka in a wine glass. We sat down and was given menus there is very, very little to choose from with just 4 main dishes plus £75 steak. There is no salmon (come on everyone has salmon on the menu) no sausage and mash or generally lunchtime things you would eat. The menu is basically dreadful. We ordered anyway and found the food very basic and very small portions especially the cod. The mediterranean looking woman serving doesn't smile has no personality and is very rude. The radiator was on full blast and very hot next to us their heating bill must be massive, in the toliets it was like a sauna. We will not be back and strongly recommend the management give the staff some friendliness training and also add more choice on the expensive menu !
Disappointed
Have been frequenting this place since it first opened and was always happy with service hotel etc but since the recent changes I April 2024 have been over several times as a couple and with friends very disappointed in the service, food not on point service very bad not attentive, slow and uninterested staff food extremely small, portions orders mixed up and late sent to wrong table, wrong glasses for drinks, such a disappointment after recommending and taking friends!
Poor, lost it’s character, totally ruin
Poor, totally ruined it, poor service. Lost its charm and character. The re vamp has ruined the character, very bland, and service was shocking. Maybe some local staff would help….
AVERAGE SUNDAY LUNCH
Having eaten at The Packhorse more than 10 times previously we were disappointed on this occasion. The food was fine, although my main course was warm rather than hot. The main problem was the service. There were plenty of staff and they were all charming. The problem was that they weren't effective; we had to ask for our starter plates to be cleared after 15 minutes of finishing our food. We then had to chase up our main courses after waiting half an hour after finishing our starters. Even then only 3 of 4 meals arrived together! The only niggle about the food is that there were no plain vegetable side dishes such as green beans, spinach etc. The service really tainted the meal and, for the first time, we were all disappointed by our experience.
NOT GOOD
Booked in early March for dinner in the newly revamped restaurant, arrived and was shown to our table .in the back room, which was dingy and poorly lit, ordered drinks, shortly after ordered food. Starter came but we were still waiting for our drinks.which eventually came . Some 50 minuets later as we were going to ask for the bill, our mains came, The food was nice, somebody said the meat was resting and was the reason for the delay. when asked why we not in the newly refurbished dining room he replied you are in the dining room and walked off which was very rude The young staff on duty were very helpful. the senior staff should should take note. Having lived in Moulton for 14 years , perhaps the local is not to visit again.
Bad experience!!
Went for a Birthday lunch Slow service, waited for 40 minutes before ordered taken, made to feel like they didn’t want us to be there very unwelcoming, and food below average I appreciate that they are closing down for 2 months on Saturday but limited wine, beers etc If you can not keep your standards because you are closing, just close down not go down Very disappointed
Absolutely lovely
A really lovely Christmas Eve lunch with the family. Great food and fabulous service. We would highly recommend.
Very bad experience on this occasion
We love going to the packhorse but on this occasion for Sunday lunch the standard was well below standard. The wife and I both ordered Beef but on this occasion the Beef was cut very thin and my wife’s Beef came with pieces of string in the meat and when I mentioned it to the waiter it was just ignored. I booked this lunch for my wife’s birthday and when booking online there is a question is this a special occasion or something like that so I did put wife’s birthday but she never even received a happy birthday so why ask the question when booking. Next to us was a table of 4 and when they left one of the waiters was rushing around like a headless chicken stumping around on the wooded floor slamming down the glasses and cutlery when setting up for the next sitting and the suddenly pulled the spare chair next to the wife away without saying excuse me or anything at all just grab it . He was running around so much and out of control he even fell over . When I asked for the bill I had my phone open with the chestnut app for the points to be added the waiter said I have to take your phone to scan it . When he returned he just returned with my phone and payment card machine no bill to check what I was paying for . I just paid and left and not very happy with my experience on this occasion.
Tasty, cheap, ugly.
Very nice and fast service, very good main course, small selection of desserts. Quite low prices. Unfortunately, interior design requires a lot of work and money.
Misled and left disappointed!
Well, where do we even start?! My partner booked an overnight stay at The Packhorse Inn as a surprise treat for our first anniversary together. My partner booked the Better King and as stated on their website, the rooms are Parisian themed and as I love French & vintage style he thought this would be perfect for me. When we arrived, we were taken to our room and immediately my partner’s face dropped. You could see it just was not what he was expecting. We stayed in “Ouse” and it was dark, navy blue with checked bedding. This is not Parisian theme! After speaking with a lady on the phone, it transpired that we were staying in the correct room just that there website is extremely misleading! Not to worry we thought, we will still have a lovely night away. It then went from bad to worse. My partner opened the chest of drawers and the door handle came off clean in his hand. Paint was peeling off the walls in multiple places and with the walls being navy, it was very noticeable. The WiFi signal was so poor to the room that we couldn’t connect to our phones or Netflix on the television. There is also no phone signal either. We then noticed that part of the duvet was coming out the cover and the duvet had blood on it!!! The blood was faded so it had obviously been washed but it’s not really what you want to see. Especially when the room has cost you over £200 a night. I then went to get ready for dinner and the shower was broken. Both the rainfall head and the smaller head so I was completely unable to shower. It was at this point that we decided to complain and enough was enough. We aren’t people to usually complain but this was an absolute joke. We spoke with the manager who was really friendly and helpful. He explained that he may possibly be able to move us but the only room they had was another room upstairs with a broken bed!! As you can imagine, the picture that this place was painting wasn’t a great one and our impressions were dwindling. He then gave us a drink at the bar and went to investigate the room. He fixed the small shower head and off we went back to get ready for dinner. We had wasted about 2-3 hours at this point. We had dinner and thankfully, it was amazing. We had Camembert and steak and really really enjoyed it. We also had a complimentary glass of Prosecco which was very much enjoyed. The manager also paid for our dinner as a goodwill gesture and we were also very grateful for this. However, we had no qualms paying for dinner as this was well worth every penny and was delicious. Also, minor detail… I know the place allows dogs but not everyone wants to be eating an upmarket meal in an enclosed space with a hairy German shepherd! It just seemed abit bizarre to us that a place like that let dogs in the evening. Seemed very strange. We left the next morning still feeling really deflated purely because it just wasn’t the treat that my partner had hoped. We have stayed in other places (notably The Dial House) for the same amount of money and the two places aren’t even comparable. We then decided that we still felt disappointed so we reached out to the manager to express our feelings. He was so helpful as before and offered us a free stay at the hotel as an apology. We were so pleased with this and offered some dates we could come. This was at the end of November and we haven’t heard a peep. I then chased last week and haven’t heard anything. So it has left no choice but to leave this very out of character review and warn others that you might want to think again before booking. It’s such a shame because it’s a lovely place in a lovely setting but we felt so disappointed and the fact that no one has even bothered to get back to us via email has left a really bad taste. Such a shame because they could’ve handled this so much better! I have never ever complained before like this. I personally don’t like the confrontation but I feel that this can’t be left and people need to know.
