National Kitchen by Violet Oon Singapore Reviews from The Last Year
Food was great, service was OK
The food was great as was expected. The satay was delicious and so were the Kueh Pie Tee and Rendang. These are all strong standards and I am glad they have maintained it. Ther service though - seemed rushed. We were there for the 1.30pm lunch slot but got seated only at 1.40pm and only around 2.20pm, the Manager came to see if he could clear stuff and showed us the dessert menu when we had not even finished our food. It felt like we were pressured to finish up. However, apart from him, the other more junior wait staff were excellent and attentive.
Above and Beyond Expectations
Violet Oon has been a consistently high quality choice of restaurant I love bringing foreign visitors to. The National Gallery outlet combines art and historical experience on top of a heritage meals - no brainer if you have one night to impress your guests. Given that I already knew what I was getting into, I wasn't expecting more. But boy were me and my guests blown away! 1) The food was exceptional. The dry laksa always has my heart. 2) we were also there to celebrate a brirthday and made a passing comment about wanting to switch to a bigger table. Wilson not only heard and took note of it, he arranged for a kueh bingka ubi with candle sent to our table and gather 4 other service staff to sing us a birthday song! An excellent touch. 3) We thought that was it until Wilson came by with the "bill" in the form of a printout of the group photo we had taken! We were absolutely blown away. The service team that night had raised the bar for service expectations my guests and I have of every dining experience in Singapore. Thank you again to Wilson and team!
Reliable satay
Chicken satay always a winner, finding smaller mains difficult. Opted for chile potatoes, very hot pots a bit hard. Menu needs a refresh same since 2022. Too many noisy children
Worthwhile experience in a beautiful space
It was our first true introduction to Peranakan food, and boy was it tasty! The teas we selected were a great accompaniment and nice that it was unlimited. The food was nicely presented and the service attentive. I would highly recommend this experience, especially when combined with a free visit to the visually stunning National Gallery!
Just not right…
Something that could be great but isn’t. Service - friendly and helpful. However, the additional roti came out after the meals. That felt weird. Furthermore they tried to rush us to order quickly. That’s not a nice experience in a venue like this. Food - Depending. Some were good and some mediocre to be honest. The food also came a little bit to the cold side. Atmosphere - Venue is great and unique very nice. It feels cozy. Great vibe. We didn’t feel that the price was justified. The quality of the food is just not great. The service is friendly but hasty. You eat much better at a hawker for much less.
Superb experience that surpasses my expectation!
It was definitely a great birthday experience for my auntie! As I was not aware of the booking reservation, I went ahead without booking and luckily, there were some tables that were no show, and we managed to get in! The food was superb and we even had a birthday cake and a photo printed to commemorate! It was definitely a pleasant experience! Thank you Ivory for helping and providing us excellent service and a big shout out to Ardi for taking time to explain the popular dishes and interacting with my family! It was their first time at this place and they enjoyed it totally as they are partially Peranakan Chinese! :)
Superb Parent’s Anniversary Lunch
It was our first time visiting Singapore and we wanted to celebrate our parent’s 54th wedding anniversary and took them out for lunch. All the food we ordered were delicious, specially the cod fish. The service was great as well. The ambience was very nice. The price was reasonable, unlike other restaurants (which we felt were just over the top).
Last night in Singapore
Enjoyed a fantastic meal here on our last night in Singapore. The place is stunning and the food was delicious. Our waitress was very helpful and prevented us from over ordering!! Would definitely recommend
Eating out in Singapore
We discovered this restaurant online before flying to Singapore, and made a reservation. There didn't seem to be many slots available, so it seemed that it would be popular. It was busy when we arrived and there were no spare tables, but by the time we finished our meal, nearly all the tables were vacant... maybe they have another later sitting - we didn't enquire. My only complaint is not about this restaurant in particular, but everywhere in Singapore, and it applies here too - the prices shown on the menu are exclusive of a 10% service charge and the 9% GST. Again, we didn't ask if the service charge was optional as we would normally leave a 10% tip anyway, but they also didn't mention that it was included when presenting the bill. If they are adding 10% and 9%, why not just include it in the menu price in the first place? I suppose once you understand that this is how they do it in Singapore (and the USA actually) then you can do mental arithmetic when considering your choices, but I prefer the UK "VAT inclusive" way of showing prices and would prefer to decide on the tip depending on the service actually received.
Dinner!
The food is amazing! Having lived in Singapore for a few years and now visiting from Sydney Australia, I can say this restaurant provides a really good selection of Singaporean favourites on the menu, both meals and drinks. The service was exceptional with staff very attentive and pre-empting our needs. This restaurant provides a welcome introduction to Singaporean cuisine with the silver service and ambiance that is characteristic of Singapore fine dining culture. Just a little cool with the A/C so ladies maybe bring a shawl. Will be recommending to our friends to visit when next in Singapore, to book in advance.
Culture and cuisine
My family just visited Singapore on holiday and was recommended to visit this restaurant from the many guide books I read. There are 2 x sittings for lunch, so we booked the later session so we weren't rushed. We arrived 15mins early for our 1.30pm lunch session and was seated promptly. I'm glad we did as there was a huge que for the 1.30pm sesdion as it got closer to the booking. My family all chose different dishes and all were lovely. The waiters were very attentive and food was quick to arrive. We did not drink any alcohol so can't comment on the beverages. My father had Haianese Chicken rice, my mother had the barramundi with a side of curry vegetables, my sister had the meatballs and then satay skewers and I had the samba prawns with rice. The dishes were fresh and tasty with lovely presentation. Would definitely return on my next trip to Singapore.
Very good experience
amazing food in a beautiful place. The service was excellent. better to book a few days before to be sure to have a table.
Continued Excellence
The food, atmosphere and service continue to be excellent here. Krishnan welcomed me and set me with a drink on the balcony as I waited for a friend to arrive, and made our experience special. The flavors, presentation, dining room all contributed to a great evening. There is a lot of great food in Singapore, but this is one of my favorites.
Great Food for Peranakan Food
I managed to have a table for this great experience with this great peranakan restaurant. As I walked in to the restaurant has been greeted by Mr. Krishnan - The Host. But unfortunately, there is a group of people that dining and most of them is actually a group of company has been made the reservation earlier and made the whole entire restaurant became so noisy due of their voices. Totally kill the ambience of the restaurant that I expected. Mr. Krishnan gave a table at the high chair area near to the bar with the facing of Marina Bay Sands tower. I really liked the decorations, the colour and touches of the designer of the restaurant but only once the crowds is there, totally my moment is killed by them. I have no choice to overcome this ambience, by plugging in my earpiece and listened to my Spotify - French cafe song-list into my ears just because want to create my own mood and ambience. Anyway, allowed myself review the restaurant with their services and foods. I ordered from the starter, main course and definitely a dessert. For the starter I ordered Kuay Pie Tee. The portion is so just nice and the sauce so great. Meanwhile for my main course, I preferred to have Garam Assam Fish and this is totally authentic of peranakan food from Malacca. All the main course is actually is served with Jasmine rice or Chicken Rice. For the dessert, I choose to have Gula Melaka Tea Cake with Coconut Ice Cream. The food experience so great and totally amazingly. Thank you so much for Mr. Krishanan and Mr. Dyn for your hospitality and serving the drinks and foods too. Based on this review, I will definitely to dining again and ensure for my forthcoming reservation will not have a large of group and keep talking so loudly until kill the ambience. Thank you. Nice venue, good food but DREADFUL service
Visiting my daughter in Singapore and wanted to take her and her boyfriend for a special night out and she chose here. Beautiful venue, really nice food but the service was confusing/ dreadful. After being seated it took 15 mins before our drinks orders were taken. We were still eating our starters when they pushed the main courses onto our place mats. We'd just started on the mains when the desert menus were thrust at us and we were told the kitchen was closing and we would have to order now if we wanted desert. My daughter was told they weren't doing any more fresh juices cos the machine had been turned off and my plate was taken before I'd even finished. We weren't late. There were still lots of other tables seated. This was around 10.30 and the place was not supposed to close until 11pm . I have no idea why they treated us so rudely. Shame, because the food was good, but not good enough to get away with such badly trained waiters!
Very disappointing.
Very disappointing. One main course consisted of a small, dry fish fillet smothered with a very spicy sauce that lacked any subtlety. The other consisted on a small baked fish with an overly salty sauce. Hugely overpriced as well. To the restaurant credit, when they asked how we enjoyed the food and we told them, they insisted on giving us a free desert . Sadly we didn’t like it either.
Book your table NOW!
There was a problem with the table which Krishnan resolved - well done. Fantastic food. The decor is top 1930 deco. You must book well in advance as it is quite a small restaurant. I recommend 'beef randang ' and beer.
We had 4 people during the lunch hr.
Beautiful place inside the National Gallery. I had the Dry Laska which was good. Chicken wing made with/shrimp paste was tasty. Mixed vegetables w/Laska sauce, it was just ok. My friends had shrimp fried rice & the Cod w/Laska. Portions are small, tasty, service was good. They will tell you to leave once your 1.5hr is up. I'm glad I tried this place but I think San Francisco still has excellent food.
Wonderful service everyone was attentive and considerate to
Wonderful service everyone was attentive and considerate to our spice and seafood tolerance. Truly authentic taste of Singapore
We were a party of 12 on December 8,2023 from the USA.
The place was elegant and beautiful, The service was polite and warm. We were advised by the head waiter who is Filipino as to what to order. However what should have been the main star of the evening was a complete letdown. The food was just plain awful. , probably the worst cuisine we have ever tried. They all looked and tasted the same, medicinal, over wrought with so many overpowering spices, all with brown sauces. Except for the Hainanese chicken, the rest of the so called Pernakian dishes were hardly touched. Even the so called Singapore Sling was loaded with extra spices with bitters. I am not being facitious, but with the exception of the Hainanese chicken, my Diet coke was the only thing tolerable. The staff was apologetic. but you cannot correct bad food. We had been advised not to leave Singapore without trying the restaurant. We left so disappointed , hungry and disgusted. Never again.
Food and service was both very good - great setup tucked
Food and service was both very good - great setup tucked away inside the gallery. Got the Beef Rendang and it was really good. Would definitely recommend.

Tucked away on the 2nd floor of the National Gallery, this restaurant serves both great and good dishes. I think the star of the menu are the satays, succulent chicken with absolutely gorgeous peanut sauce. The sweet & sour fish was also very good, as were many of the veggie options. Good service, funky decor and definitely worth a visit.
Nice local food in the national gallery.
Southeast style decoration. Art tour at the same time.
Such a great experience for Peranakan Afternoon Tea at
Such a great experience for Peranakan Afternoon Tea at Violet Oon. There's a few Violet Oon locations around Singapore and this one is inside the National Gallery. We had a bit of difficult time trying to find the restaurant as we went through the wrong set of doors but once in we were quickly greeted and seated down. The whole afternoon tea experience was fantastic. I loved everything from the savory bites to the sweet treats. Normally I am not very impressed by the savory items in afternoon tea but this was really great and I loved the dry laksa that they serve. The sweet nites were also fantastic, showcasing traditional peranakan desserts and not too sweet which is the ultimate compliment! This was such a nice afternoon treat and definitely large enough to fill in as a meal if you're going for a late lunch. The ambiance is elegant and classy without being too stuffy. It's definitely a wonderful location for afternoon tea with friends or a date!

We absolutely love this location! The food is incredible no matter what you order. The ambiance is posh, vibrant, and classy all at the same time. It's definitely a wonderful location for a date night. The employees were great - everyone was so friendly and helpful. Highly recommend!
This was the best restaurant of our entire three week
This was the best restaurant of our entire three week vacation. Service was exceptional and the food was delicious. The prawns were scrumptious. They give you a small treat to taste to see what your tolerance to hot chili is in the beginning so we did not make a mistake in ordering.
