Margaret Double Bay Reviews from The Last Year
Sunday lunch
Very impressed with the service! Best we have had and we’ve been to many restaurants. There are many staff so they can be very attentive, pleasant and their attention to detail with table service was excellent. Food was delicious only two things…the cheese entree was overcooked and rubbery but was forgiven as the rest of our menu was wonderful. The wines are expensive and not enough choice of sparkles for me but hubby was very happy with his selection. We will definitely be back!
Expensive and badly cooked steak
The starters were great - delicious oysters. Followed by ceviche and the salmon roe. Then amazing Pipis in XO sauce. But the ribeye steak we ordered medium rare was bloody red, which had probably got a selfie of a flame but not actually been anywhere near it. Sent it back to be cooked longer oh b#$#&#&#. Came back salty and tough. 3rd in the world, not in my book. The reverse sear steak I cooked at home was far better. Probably needed Neil Perry to scrutinise the cooking. Love your cookbook, not your restaurant. And the wines are extremely expensive. 100$ plus. 700$ all in for two.
Superb special-occasion restaurant
We had the most marvellous meal for a family celebration. Every dish was to be savoured and the waitstaff were attentive and helpful. Margaret is, for us, a superb special-occasion restaurant.
Memorable, even without the selfie.
So many people of our acquaintance have had nothing but great things to say about this place, and we've been lusting after it for a while. Our 45th wedding anniversary fell on a Sunday night, and since my beloved life partner's name is Margaret, our celebration just had to be here. I really don't know if it made a difference that we were on a special occasion, but it certainly felt like we got a wonderful reception. Best seats in the house. We had Elena's buffalo mozzarella with grilled bosc pears, blue swimmer crab salad, Ben's coral trout with XO butter, Brent's Wollemi duck breast, green salad with Margaret vinaigrette & Wentworth's potatoes, followed by an off-menu lemon meringue tart which was incredible. Our waiter, Chris'pher, was amazing, offering lots of information and advice, including reserving the tart in advance for us as stocks ran low. It was made even more special when Neil Perry visited the restaurant specifically to come over to congratulate us, and chat for a while, present Margaret with an autographed souvenir menu, and head out the door to home and family. I thought about asking for a selfie, but dismissed the idea as a bit gauche. Sydney friends, it's not inexpensive, but it's worth it. Wonderful, memorable experience.
Delicious food. Extensive menu. First sitting time restrictions too short for a group. Felt pressured by staff.
There were five of us and we had the early 6-00pm sitting on a Friday night. There was already quite a queue when we arrived at the front door and this took some time to clear before we were seated. We were then given the quite extensive menu to peruse which contained approximately 50 dishes including starters, entrees and mains as well as eight sides. Our friendly waitress gave us a quick overview of the menu, you can share both entrees and mains or just entrees and have your own mains or just choose your own. As it turns out the last option would have been the quickest and most efficient as trying to get agreement between the five people, considering dietaries and personal preferences and the number of choices, plus seeking clarification of certain dishes, took an inordinate amount of time resulting in some frustration and stress from our waitress who came to take our order on four separate occasions (the first only about four minutes after we got the menus) and clearly was mindful of getting us out within the allotted time frame. We were not trying to be difficult. A separate waiter took our drinks orders. Between us as entrees we shared the potato rosti with creme fraiche and salmon roe, Sashimi of Paspaley pearl meats, slow cooked zucchini with green tahini, Spencer Gulf king prawns and the pipis with Mexican XO and garlic shoots. The only disappointing dish was the zucchini. The rest were quite delicious. As mains we had the King George whiting (generous serving), the Mushroom pie (which the menu states takes 25 minutes which eats into your allotted dining time) and the Waygu rump. Sides were slow cooked peas, twice cooked potatoes (superb but a small dish) and grilled Kent pumpkin. We all thoroughly enjoyed our choices, although one of the Waygu rumps came as clearly medium well rather than medium rare. The only dish that was slightly disappointing was the peas side dish that was also not visually appealing. Dessert was apple and custard Mille-Feuille, coconut jelly with pineapple and the olive oil Panna Cotta with olive oil ice cream. Again all very tasty. Wine list was extensive with a number of pages devoted to Burgundy reds. There were very few bottles that I spotted under $100. My Australian beer was $15 for a small bottle. The service was overly efficient with dishes being cleared off the table before some of us had finished our meals. The waitress looked stressed as she took the dessert orders as clearly it was getting late. We didn't have to ask for the bill. It was delivered to the table seconds after a couple of the dessert plates were taken away. Overall, the food was excellent with great flavours and textures. It was though, very expensive, particularly when you added in the drinks. There was insufficient time allowed between sittings for groups. We felt hassled as clearly we were not making decisions quickly enough for our waitress who was becoming stressed and displayed this by being very short with us.
Exquisite cuisine but very high prices and hopeless parking
Food was excellent but overpriced (eg $7.50 per oyster) and the two hour time slot only just worked for two people - too short for larger groups. Overall very nice but expensive food, good service except for being reminded to leave at 1 hour and 40 minutes and again at 1 hour and 50 minutes of our two hour slot, even though we'd paid the bill by the second reminder and were obviously just finishing our drink. And parking in the area is hopeless!
Great dining experience
Given its celebrity chef ownership, Margaret , based in the high end Double Bay area is neither pretentious or over priced. It feels and looks like a successful restaurant from the moment you walk in. The blue fin tuna and veal rump were both outstanding quality, the former perfectly seared and a texture that melted like butter in the mouth. Veal rump too was a special cut - full of flavor and tender. From the starters the sashimi tuna special was excellent , but the Thai style blue swimmer crab starter was disappointing, both in terms of flavor and the proportion of crab to salad. Service is friendly, unhurried and helpful.
Don’t bother much better seafood options exist…
This was my second visit to Margaret and my last , booked months ago from the moment we sat down we were rushed , two half glasses of average champagne $ 40 each far from exceptional, again we were asked threes times in the period of 15 minutes what we wanted to order , 4 entrees , garlic bread , bottle of wine $ 500 plus dollars they can go and get f ……not worth it far better food and ambience at many Sydney pubs Rude staff , people waiting, no tip no return not interested in this elevated status mentality they are fake unreal order takers …
Magnificent
For some reason I have never been a fan of Neil Perry’s, notwithstanding the fact that I had never walked through any door of his. Today, after last night’s dinner, I can’t wait to go back. Cerviche, crab salad and prawns for entree - all fresh and beautiful. Snapper and whiting for mains, along with potato and a green salad. There was nothing out of place; nothing that didn’t work. The banana, toffee and macadamia Soufflé and the Amber Jewel Plum and Passionfruit Mille-Feuille are up there with the best desserts ever eaten by your correspondent. Magnificent food; wonderful staff; perfect meal.
Up to expectations
Great Restaurant, good casual atmosphere, food was good, as expected, service exceptional, plenty of staff to look after you. Good size menu. We both had fish dishes which were wood fire cooked. Decent serve but need to order sides. We had Wentworth potatoes and peas with anchovies (tasted much better than it sounds). Both were good size servings, would order both again. Good wine list but limited by glass list which was a bit pricey. Noticed a number of other diners were sharing mains and Entrees. We had a main each, bread, two side dishes, 1 glass of Champagne, 1 glass of wine and a coffee each which came to around $240 . Well worth the cost. Will go again.
Lunch at DB
The service was exemplary starting with being shown to our table and the attentive wait staff. We shared tuna tartare, potato rosti with salmon roe and chargrilled zucchini. For mains we shared the roast chicken with eggplant puree with chargrilled corn and bell peppers. It was probably a little too much but it was so delicious we kept eating. However next time we will leave room for dessert.
Honesty is essential
Given the widespread prevalence of food allergies, it’s essential that diners can be certain that the waiter will give honest answers to their questions. I have no allergies, but I do enjoy cutting into a thick, juicy steak. Accordingly, when ordering, I asked the waiter: “Does the steak come sliced?” The answer I received was a firm “No.” When my steak arrived, I pointed out to the waiter that it had been sliced. Clearly, the answer to my question should’ve been, “Yes, the steak comes sliced, but I’ll ask the chef not to slice yours.” The sliced steak was duly replaced, with apologies. But that isn’t the issue. Unless waiters give scrupulously honest answers to diners' questions, it’s only a matter of time before a diner has a dangerous allergic reaction.
Book a table, it’s worth the wait.
Lucky to get a table here. This is my new favourite Sydney restaurant! Very good vibe buzzing with conversation. The food is outstanding. Seafood and fish in abundance. A great selection of raw and cooked entrees and wood grilled mains , steaks and other non piscine options available for the meat eaters. We three shared dishes off pipis, prawns, Thai sausages and ceviche of gold spot trevally. Main course: grilled King George whiting with sides of slow cooked peas and crisp and creamy potatoes. Very smart fish and chips. Some great desserts on offer, my wife chose a crème caramel, not quite the right texture (perhaps some cornflour added). This was the only negative in an otherwise exceptionally good meal.
Upgraded
All I can say is they improved so much and we enjoyed greatly with their new menu. Neil Perry got his mojo back, the food is delicious and the flavor is well balanced. The only downside, actually for most of restaurants in Sydney is a bit noisy.
A special dining experience
This is an exceptional family run restaurant, and right up there with the very best in Sydney. The staff are incredible, always happy, friendly and accommodating, the food is superb, and it just has a lovely relaxed and classy atmosphere. Importantly the wine list is great for those that really appreciate a cellar with great variety and depth. Top marks from us, we have been a number of times and its always a special treat, congratulations to Neil and Samantha and family.
Does not live up to expectations
Work needs to be done on size of the desserts and the plating. Very non inspirational particularly for a hatted restaurant. Would fail Masterchef.
Delicious food
We had a birthday voucher and went for lunch. Entrees albacore tuna and burrata with extras were excellent as werethe prawns and squid. Restaurant was full approx 80-100 people and we counted 30 staff. Will be back
Top Notch!
This is a great place to eat. The service was friendly and top notch - and the food was so delicious. They chatted with us and got to know us through the night.
The entire experience was first class.
My wife and I both looked forward to the venue in view of its recent award. We found the food and service was perfect and not overbearing. The time between servings perfect. My only comment would be I liked my steak Tartare (entree) a little spicier, but I enjoyed it all the same. My wife had the Albacore entree and Beef filet (Bleu). I had the Coral trout as my main. All were served exactly as we desired. Our sweet service being a crumble and a trifle were delicious. Wine selection by the glass was available to match the food courses. The food quantity was adequate - quality is paramount with an adequate serve when three courses are desired. That’s what we got. It was crowded but the noise level was acceptable - we could talk across the table. We spent just over two hours enjoying our meal and at no time were we rushed. Neil Perry was seen organising the open kitchen and he was anything but a Gordon Ramsay. A fine group producing fine food. Is it the best restaurant in Australia ? It’s exceptionally good but there are others that can equal the food - maybe the ambience and service get ‘Margaret’ over the line. We have eaten around the world and Margaret is certainly at the top end. Thank you for an enjoyable experience and the cup cake recognising MY Margaret’s birthday.

Great Service - amazing dinner!!
Read about the site in NYT and bought a reservation at Mother Wolf in LA 2 days later. Worked great and the food was amazing!!!
Worked perfectly!
Got the reservation (that I couldn't get anywhere else) and was able to entertain a group of friends at the infamous Bern's Steakhouse.
Got into Nobu Malibu
Wonderful! My parents are visiting and we have wanted to go to Nobu Malibu for years. I tried getting a reservation myself but it was next to impossible. So glad I was able to buy a reservation on appointment trader for a decent price!
Very easy
Was very hesitant going into this experience but am glad to say that it worked out very well ! will definitely use appointment trader in the future
Fabulous Lunch
I was veeeeeerry skeptical that this would work, particularly at a restaurant as hard to get into as Nobu Malibu, and it was perfect! We had lunch outside on the patio and it was fabulous!
Great reviewer team
Just wanted to take a second to shout out the reviewer team. Even though they probably review hundreds of listings and bids a day, they still take the time to leave great comments and respond relatively quickly. Thanks!
Incredible
I got a reservation to Don Angie, which I've been trying to book for weeks! I am very happy with this service.
Best platform out there!
Super simple, easy, and fast to secure reservations for hard-to-get restaurants and locations!

Worked well, got me into a restaurant with no availability
I was skeptical, and I still don't really know how they managed to find this hard-to-find reservation, but it was a win-win from my point of view, and I'll use this service again.
Last minute reservation for Delilah Las Vegas
Got a last minute reservation, dinner for 2 at Delilah Las Vegas: super impressed! The process was simple, transaction seamless. We had an amazing time! Couldn’t be happier! 😍
It works!
Ok at this point I've attended a reservation purchased on AT by a friend and sold a reservation personally. Both worked pretty smoothly, nothing sketchy about it. A few areas for improvement including a way to more directly communicate between buyers and sellers, but the app always seems to be in development. AT customer support is really(!) responsive and helpful too if you have questions!
Money transfer
As a seller, I like the fact i have the ability now to transfer money out of my AT account and into a bank account. Makes getting the money much easier then the process before.
Love this app
Got to go to places otherwise unreachable
Easy Access
Very easy to get into one of the hardest restaurants to reserve in New York.
Whose name will my reservation be under when I arrive at the venue?
It can be under your name or a name you choose! Some reservation offers already include the AppointmentTrader Transfer Service which will transfer the reservation in to your name. If its not included you can add it on after buying the reservation for a small fee. One thing on that though: As many reservations become available at last minute, taking a reservation in someone else name is quick and great for privacy. Most reservations on AT are listed with a virtual phone number, so all you need to do is present the phone number at the hostess stand and you are good to go!
Payouts Blocked Because of Sell Through Rate
Does anyone know how AT plans to handle cases where a seller is quitting the platform but has a sell through rate <25%? The error message I got said to fill more bids or find other ways to increase the rate.
Is AT really going to block sellers from withdrawing their money? Especially revenue made before the sell through rate was introduced??

LOL. Thank you The New Yorker.
Appointment
Transferring reservations is not supported in AT. Why not just use the name in the AT screenshot?
Buyers interested in Bern's Steakhouse: PLEASE READ
Same goes for 4 Charles and I Sodi
Prepaid Reservation Fee
Agreed. Ultimately not addressing this month after month is clearly resulting in a drop in certain venue’s rankings & sales.
Congrats on 3 mil

Need to cancel a bid, not getting a response… how do I do it?
Click on "Take off the Market Option" in your portfolio
Working on your bid?
Your bid has been “matched” with a reservation. From the time a reservation has been located, the seller of the reservation must connect with moderator to give transfer information for reservation. If the seller;however, does NOT respond to reservation transfer, then your bid is reprocessed and returns to the first step, which is connecting your request to a reservation.
Process after bid is accepted.
Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
Where do the Reservations on AppointmentTrader come from?
Mostly from people who don't need their reservations or appointments any longer. AT has no relationship with places listed and acts as a platform connecting buyers and sellers making sure that listed reservations are real and that privacy is not compromised when transacting.
What happens if my bid expires unanswered?
Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.
