Kerala Indian Restaurant, Downtown Kyoto 京都市 Reviews from The Last Year
Don't Hesitate!
When we were in Kyoto for a few months in 2017, Kerala was one of our favorite "take a break from Japanese food" restaurants. I'm sure we had lunch there at least six times. Back in New York, I have often craved for their tomato soup! Now under new management, the soup is very nice, very similar and the overall format has changed a little bit but Kerala still offers very nice food and very good value! Just pop on the elevator (or up the one flight of stairs) and have a consistently delicious meal. (The breads are very nice too!)
Still a Kyoto Classic
There has been a change of ownership and the place is not quite so clean, quiet or orderly as it was before, under its Japanese management. But the food remains excellent--at lunchtime, if you get the Kerala Set or the Vegetarian Set--and the prices remain fantastic (for US$6 you can enjoy a huge thali, with chai). This remains for now one of the very best restaurants in Kyoto, and it's only to be hoped that the new owners do not tamper with its long-running, glorious winning formula.
A little exoticism in Kyoto…
Thank you to the hotel for recommending this Indian restaurant with mainly Indian customers. Everything was good and the atmosphere was very local... you would have thought it was there, for a very moderate price. The garlic nan: hummmm. Professional and friendly service.
Amazing food
The food was amazing & service was great. The cheese naan (but only order if you really like cheese bc it’s super cheesy) & dal were delicious — 10/10 recommend!
Yummy!!
This is one of the few places i loved during our trip to Japan. Visited this place with family and friends. The food was aunthentic Indian food, just like home. Kept revisiting for all 4 days we stayed in koyoto. Staff were very friendly.had a wonderful experience. Will recommend this place to everyone. Must try.
Good vegetarian choices
We were looking for a vegetarian dinner - not easy in Kyoto - and this restaurant wasn't easy to find, at first, because it is on the first floor, above a shop. It has a very good selection of vegetarian dishes. The food was very good - a nice variety of flavours.
Good old Kerala
This was my favorite lunch spot when I was in university. Went for lunch with my son for nostalgia. It made me smile to see good old Kerala lunch. Still good value after all these years.
Authentic Indian cuisine to satisfy one’s curry craving
Always on the lookout for a good Indian curry when on holiday, and needing a break from the local cuisine, this was a delightful little restaurant a short walking distance from the Sanjo station. The space is cosy, with a good few tables lined with dining couples at the time we arrived. Tables pushed together would be able to accommodate slightly bigger groups. Despite its South Indian name, the cuisine is more North Indian with a vast array of vegetarian, meat and fish dishes. We thoroughly enjoyed the very unusual silken tofu curry, prawn saag and a mutton biryani. It is always nice to be able to see the chef in action masterfully manoeuvring his tandoori instruments in the tandoori oven. I finished off the meal with a lovely masala chai. The restaurant is licensed, with a limited, but ample drinks menu enough to accompany one’s meal, which is really the hero of the occasion after all! The service is friendly, prompt and efficient. A must-visit for the curry you’re craving!
Absolutely delicious!
I have no pictures to add as we started on our food the moment it arrived! We visited here twice in 5 days as it was so delicious. Menu in English was extremely helpful. Lovely attentive staff too. Great options for vegetarians too Would definitely recommend a visit. It's on the second floor, so look for the menu on display downstairs
