Hook Fish Co San Francisco Reviews from The Last Year

Came to Hook Fish on a Sunday around 1:30pm and it was busy as usual, so we lined up, placed our order and then crossed the street to the bookstore to pass the time. It was about a 40 minute wait. The daily fish was petrale sole, which was new since most of the time I've been here it was rock cod. Fish and Chips (3 piece, $19): I have to say it was not as good with the petrale sole compared to the usual rock cod, and it didn't seem to come out as piping hot and fresh and it usually does. Regardless though the batter was still perfect, and it hit the spot. The fries were half what I'm used to and half a little not crispy enough. All in all still good with the petrale sole but I might skip if its not rock cod! Fish of the Day Burrito ($16): also got the petrale sole, and there was barely and fish inside. I also do notice that the burritos tend to not be evenly distributed so sometimes you get bites of just rice or just veggie, and I think I'll stick with the plates next time. Still love Hook Fish, and can't wait to come back for rock cod next time :)

4.5/5 for me! Their fish n chips are bomb. The batter was light yet crispy and flavorful. The fish inside was still really moist and fresh. The poke was fresh as well, my partner and I had no complaints. The .5 for me is just from a price/quantity ratio. It is a little bit on the pricier side. On a sunny day, this place is absolute vibe. Get some beers, chill, and eat some great food. The service was quick and easy. Order at the counter, get a buzzer, and grab a spot to eat.
Went to their location in Marin super cute decor.
Food was great I got there fried fish tacos and some poster and their oyster sauce was amazing and paired with one of their ciders was perfect. We ordered our food first and then sat at the bar which was great cuz you can also order from there so you can always get more and all the staff was super nice!
We like this place for the fish and chips.
But...it bothers me a lot that the health score information isn't great, especially when the place is small and they are serving fish that is out in displays. Even though the service and food are fine, I'm not so sure I'll be back until those health items are improved.

DATE & TIME: Mon Jan 15, 2024 @ 1:00 PM LAYOUT: large display case of fish fillets; order from the left side (inside) and pick up food on the right (outside); small parklet for dining SERVICE: quick and friendly FOOD: fish & chips PARKING: mostly residential street parking One thing that satisfies my greasy foods craving is fish & chips. There's not many places you'd come across in SF that specialize in fish & chips. But with a Yelp search, Hook Fish was the top result with raving reviews. We visited on a sunny afternoon during MLK holiday weekend, and the line was unsurprisingly out the door. The line moved fast and we ordered within 5 minutes, and the food was ready within 10 minutes. Because the parklet was packed with diners, we opted for to-go. The cod was flaky and moist, and the batter was so crispy and fresh. The accompanying tartar sauce was very thick with herby and tangy notes. The fries were well seasoned, but not as crispy as I'd like. Depending on your hunger level, you can get 2 piece or 3 piece of fish for your fish & chips order. Other menu options include tacos, sandwiches, burritos, and salads. Only 3 blocks away from Ocean Beach, Hook Fish is a great lunch option if you're spending the day at the beach.
We took out from this neighborhood spot.
I ordered a fish burrito with fried petrale sole and my daughter got fish tacos with fried fish. I was disappointed in the lack of flavor in the burrito. It might have been remedied by some good salsa but non was included. The fish tacos were better with a large portion of fish in each taco. Be sure to ask for salsa when you takeout,!
Awesome fish and chips, good vibe, great staff! I recommend
Awesome fish and chips, good vibe, great staff! I recommend a visit! Raw fish is great too

My daughter and I went here for lunch while in San Francisco. We shared the fish of the day tacos, ceviche and sandwich. The tacos were better then the sandwich, but both were delicious, fresh, and hit the spot. They have fresh juice too that was a little too pulpy for me. All around I would definitely go back here again when I'm in town.
This place has some real winners and losers on their menu.
The fish and chips are consistently very good and my guess is what keeps this place open. Loved the guacamole and the amount of chips given are satisfactory. Other things like the carrot hot sauce has room to grow-maybe some garlic power and cilantro to deepen the flavor would help. I also hated the orange in the ceviche. It made the flavors clash and was overral disappointing. A classic Mexican or Peruvian ceviche recipe would have made this place an all around great restaurant. Also if you are only going to have outdoor seating would it kill the staff to have the area pressure washed from Time to time? The tables also look like they are never cleaned.

Had the fish burrito as a recommendation from the kid, while we were visiting San Francisco. It was a bit mushy, the fish was a bit fishy and the red cabbage was "bleeding" all over the place. The kid and her posse love this place, so don't take my word, it was just my one experience. Go. Maybe Try This Place. HAVE FUN!
Incompetent and Burnt.
Food was lost, then the fish and chips was inedible due to the carbonized herbs making it like eating charcoal. Disgusting I will never visit again.
Worth a trip to the beach
The queue on a grey Thursday lunchtime wasn’t too long, but the place was still buzzing, with people happily sharing the wooden tables and seats outside. My fish and chips was prepared and called promptly, and was fresh and delicious. The tartare sauce was good and I loved the habanero carrot sauce to splash on top. My partner’s blackened fish plate with accompanying salads was more adventurous and full of interesting flavours. Washed down with one of the many draft ales - we were given a taste before we bought it, and it was too good to miss. The place itself, with the open kitchen, was spotless and the fish in the counter fridge well-presented. A real treat if you’re at the beach and worth the trek if you’re not
Good!
Very nice place with a few tables outside, frequented mainly by locals. Really excellent burritos and fish sandwiches. Close to Ocean Beach but very far from everything else (Fisherman's, downtown, etc..).
Yum!
We noticed this place because of the people lining up to get food. No wonder! The fish is fresh and excellently cooked, whether naked or battered, as well as being pretty good value. There are seats outside but they were always full so we took the food to the beach, two blocks away and ate it watching the sun go down. It was so good we did it again a couple of nights later. Don't be put off by the long lines, they go down pretty quickly and anyway, it's worth the wait.
Superbly fresh!
Superbly fresh fish served as your choice of platter, sandwich, or burrito. Counter service with limited outdoor seating, but you can get it to go and have a picnic at the beach!
