😍 5/5 - tl;dr this self-described "supper club" achieves a balance

tl;dr this self-described "supper club" achieves a balance of sophisticatedly innovative and comfortably cozy, and it is certainly one of my favorite restaurant experiences in the city In the midst of the pandemic, Amanda Shulman signed a temporary lease in Rittenhouse Square to showcase her "supper club" concept: a rotating, locally sourced menu in an intimate and personal setting. Fast-forward 2 years, and Her Place was a resounding hit: the biweekly reservation drop is a challenge that rivals Zahav, Her Place's sister restaurant My Loupe has opened just blocks away to critical acclaim, and Shulman has garnered back-to-back nominations for Best Emerging Chef from the James Beard Foundation. I've lived just around the corner of Her Place since it opened -- and I'm glad that I finally had the opportunity to give it a try. Even though Her Place is the new kid on the block, it feels infinitely timeless and effortlessly comfortable. Marble tables and mismatched wooden chairs are pressed into the tiny space, and each table has a fresh flower and a live candle. The whitewashed room has forest-green trim and plenty of artsy framed posters. The sizzle from the open kitchen mixes with the low hum of instrumental music and 2000s hits. To kick off the meal, Shulman greets the room from the open kitchen in the back, and she invites the guests to introduce themselves to each other. Then, she gives an in-depth illustration before each course and supplement. My partner and I pounced on a reservation right when they were released on Sunday evening. When we arrived, the staff immediately made us feel at home. We dove into our meal with an amuse-bouche: a crispy cheese sandwich with rhubarb jelly and foie gras mousse. The strong sweetness of rhubarb complemented by the characteristically rich liver well. Next, we received a giant beef bone, sliced in half to easily access the marrow. The herby marrow melted in my mouth, and the springy fava beans perfectly complemented it. The accompanying focaccia was drenched in brown butter and toasted until crisp. Further, the simple side salad offered some acidity to cut through the rich marrow. Next, we received grilled asparagus with ramp-based ranch dressing, which we upgraded with a fried soft-shelled crab. Everything was crisp, and the lemon nicely offset the substantial ranch. The pasta course consisted of pillowy ricotta gnocchi, enveloped in melted cheese and served in a creamy crab sauce. For our main course, we were served buttery, perfectly charred scallops with a sweet-and-salty sweet onion "cream" and crunchy lovage. Across both, the combination of flavors and textures was masterful, and each bite was as mouthwatering as the last. Our meal concluded with an almond shoehorn pastry, schmeared with strawberry whipped cream and lemon curd. It was light and flaky, with occasional crispy sugar crystals mixed throughout. My partner and I were floored by the meal, and we would have been happy if it ended there -- but Shulman herself visited each table to drop off take-home baggies of duck fat "Chex Mix". Dinner for 2 ran just over $200 (after tax, tip, and our crab supplement), and we agreed that it was worth every penny. As my final supper before moving permanently to Los Angeles, Her Place was an outstanding occasion to celebrate my near-decade in Philly. If I were to list the best fine "special occasion" restaurants in Philly, Her Place would no doubt rank among the top -- go ASAP before Shulman moves on to bigger and better things.
