Gage & Tollner Brooklyn Reviews from The Last Year
Classic steakhouse in downtown Brooklyn with old era vibes.
The decor inside is beautiful and gives you a 1930-40's feel. The food meats the hype as well. The bone in rib eye was super tender and had the perfect butter amount to compliment the meal. For a medium rare, maybe a little too charred in some areas, but overall it was still delicious. I was a little bummed that it the speakeasy section, but definitely plan to come back and am looking forward to it then.
A classic restaurant vibe and the food, service, and
A classic restaurant vibe and the food, service, and ambiance all are outstanding. The interior is a rustic/elegant mix (if that makes sense). Long wooden bar at the front looks like it was made a century ago and well-maintained. Our server was terrific: made some recommendations for food and drinks and everything was great. Cocktails were on point, particularly the flavored margaritas. Ok, onto the food. The bread was perfect, with both a little crunchy crust and pillowy soft inside. Oysters were also delicious. Caesar salad was crisp and had the right amount of dressing; the Romaine didn't get wilty. The mains were great as well. Seems this place is known for the friend chicken and it definitely hit the spot. Good sized portion for the price. The roasted chicken was also excellent. The dessert was huge (or maybe we were just sooo full), but the baked Alaska is delicious. This place is really difficult to get a reservation, and now I know why. Five stars, easily.
I love Gage & Tollner.
Great food and atmosphere. Classic steakhouse vibe w amazing seafood and cocktails.
When expectation doesn't match with reality
Nice food (even if it was not so tasty) but like other restaurants in New York, they use this dark ambience and the noise was quite loud. Furthermore they gave us a table close to the toilet (it was impossible to change it) even if we booked table in advance specifying it was a celebration dinner.
Fantastic service, yummy cocktails, nice ambiance.
Baked Alaska is supposedly a must but not sure why it's not lit up at the table...
Terrific
This is an outstanding restaurant in a beautiful space in an unremarkable section of downtown Brooklyn. The food is great, and the menu is much more varied than a mere steak house. Service is superb too. Two nits: 1. It is extremely loud. Conversation can be a challenge. 2. The all genders restroom is a bit odd. But neither is reason enough to stay away from this great restaurant.
First, I want to comment on some reviews I've seen here
First, I want to comment on some reviews I've seen here (and on Google), and which talk about how G&T supposedly mistreats their dishwashers. It seems very odd (suspicious) to me, how mere 'diners' would have a supposed awareness of how a restaurant treats their dishwashers? In addition, some such comments (at least, in the Google reviews) even mention the dishwashers by name. How many of you reading this have any clue, how Any restaurant you dine at, may or may not treat their dishwashers? Not only that but, could you fathom even knowing the dishwashers' names? How often do we even see the people washing the dishes, particularly in a fine restaurant? Answer: Never. So it seems to me that somehow, a story about their dishwashers took hold on social media, and then some people simply ran with it, regurgitating what they heard/read from others. Now, as for my own experience dining here... The decor has been lovingly restored to its original, historic grandeur. The service is attentive and understated, without being intrusive. As for the food and drink, the cocktails are great, and the food seems to vary from 'good' to 'excellent', depending on what you get. For example, the appetizer of..I think it's roasted cherry tomatoes with goat cheese and bread crumbs (or was it toasted bread?)....it was good, not great. One time I got a whole fish dish...it might have been black sea bass(?) that was very good. But I think the real star is the Baked Alaska, and where with every bite you get a little 'surprise'....maybe a sudden burst of fresh mint flavor....black cherry, etc. G&T is great for a special occasion meal, or when you simply want to occasionally treat yourself.
Raw bar and ribeye are solid 10s.
The apps looked okay, so we didn't order any. Dessert options did not appeal to us either. Unfortunately I had to skip alcohol but will go back to try their famous martinis. Maybe also the kimchi cornbread. Service was good, and the place is beautiful.
Amazing steak and cocktails and mushrooms! Really lovely
Amazing steak and cocktails and mushrooms! Really lovely experience in a wonderfully renovated space. Check out the cocktails both downstairs and at the upstairs speakeasy. The steaks are expensive but worth it!
Beautiful restaurant, small but diverse brunch menu.
Friendly staff as well would recommend
Everything was good except the pricey bone in ribeye.
You would think the best dish would be the steak, but not. I know the bone weighs a lot but a 34 ounce should be okay for 3 people with 3 apps and 3 side dishes. We did love the mushroom app and the asparagus. The hash brown wasn't hash but still a tasty. More like pressed slices of potato. Would have been 4 stars but service was very slow, and dinner took almost 3 hours. No drinks and was $125 pp.
Great place for elevated lunch in the area.
Three of us got lunch for $300 (including tip). Here's a breakdown of what we ordered. Drinks: Flavored seltzer, Bloody Mary and vodka martini. Appetizers 1. Kimchi cornbread with side of butter was spectacular. I was absolutely not expecting it to be that good. They apparently make the kimchi in-house. 2. Half dozen oysters -- excellent. 3. Crispy hen-of-the-woods mushrooms were perfectly fried and nicely salted. They rested on garlic aioli and house sriracha. My partner had the lunch prix fixe of crab soup (reminded me of clam chowder after having a taste), burger and dark chocolate ice cream. Friend got his own burger, and I ordered the roasted mushroom toast with a soft egg. I'd definitely get this again, probably with a second egg because you get two thick sourdough slices. All of our entrees included a side of watercress salad resting on purple potatoes. So good! The burgers were 10 ounces and hefty. I had forgotten burgers can require both hands, as there are so many smash burgers on menus these days. I'm glad I caught an error on our check. The ice cream was rung up for $5, despite it being included in the prix fixe -- it's not like we ordered separate ice cream. They were very apologetic about it, and fixed the check quickly, but still awkward since the ice cream was on a plate with Happy Anniversary written in chocolate sauce, as this was a celebratory occasion for us. It brought down the vibes. Service was friendly. But they don't bring out more food until you're finished with the previous course. It means that entrees aren't served until the appetizers are done with, and dessert doesn't come out until the entrees have been taken away. We visited right when they opened and there were only a few other parties, but by the time we left, it was full and lively. I would definitely come back for weekend brunch.
Lackluster in taste, trading on the past. Something has to give.
Sadly, the negative reviews are pretty spot on. After two visits, no more. For the very high price, I expect warm service from the team, and food that tastes great. Unfortunately, what's on offer from the team and the kitchen tastes much like arrogance. Sure, if you want to spend loads of cash, go and go again and again. If you are looking for food that tastes great, I can't vouch for this once great.
Not worth the journey out of Manhattan
Would not return. Food was ok but incredibly expensive, service was friendly but clearly false, room/ atmosphere was ok but nothing to make the Uber out of Manhattan worthwhile. Somelier recommended a fantastic bottle of wine however which made the meal. Overall disappointing.
Those fries are $15.
It's like 50 cents per fry. Same with onion rings ($16 - they took it off), but they were not edible. $71 dollar steak was underwhleming and just ok. Prices are equivalent to midtown manhattan, but the taste is worse. That's pretty bad.
Gorgeous interior mediocre service
Made a Sunday brunch reservation to celebrate our anniversary. Food was okay but there was a long wait for our entrees, live jazz combo was a nice touch. Waiter was not attentive and there was no acknowledgment of our special occasion.
Let's just say that I've been back here 3 times since
Let's just say that I've been back here 3 times since trying it 2 weeks ago so if that's not saying the food, service and the ambiance were the standard of dining that you should expect for this price point for entrees and drinks. We've had the "perfect martini" and everything from dessert, salads and starters. Nabbing a table here has also been in our favor. Sitting at the bar for food and drinks and the other times at a table for two. Go here and sit at the bar and ask for Patrick!
We've passed Gage & Tollner's many times, but I finally
We've passed Gage & Tollner's many times, but I finally said, "it's a Brooklyn establishment -- we need to go!" When we got there, it was mid afternoon and we were given the lunch menu (dinner starts at 5 PM). My husband had a broccoli/cheese/rye danish which he felt was unexpectedly interesting. I had the Gage & Tollner chopped salad which was fresh and tasty. He also had the hamburger sandwich -- one of the juiciest burgers he's had in a long time -- very filling! There aren't any pics of the mashed potatoes because they were so delicious on a cold, rainy day that I lost all sense of the need to do anything, much less take photos. The service was outstanding and our waiter explained that the tables at the front aren't reserved - so if we're not organized enough to reserve in advance, we'll definitely come by again to snag a table. Really great find!
The food is overpriced for pretty mid tier food.
The ambiance may be nice but everything else is highly overrrated.
Gage and Tollner, how do I love thee.
Let me count the ways. 1- The place is gorgeous! The old fashion decor is warm and welcoming. I am happy they did not change it much and just restored as much as they did! Perfect vibe for a Steakhouse. 2- The Dolphin Bar upstairs is equally gorgeous and the drink were divine! 3- Last but not least the food! We had to order the she crab soup as we saw it on U Tube. It was delectable! I shared a steak with my daughter. I have never had a better piece of meat! The rib eye was magnificent! Perfectly cooked, medium rare of course! It had perfect amount of fat and seasoned to perfection. For sides were had the butter roasted hash browns and creamed spinach. Both were yummy! The service was spot on. Our server was friendly and attentive. Overall there were no complaints from me or my daughter and son in law!
This burger is definitely a contender on my top burgers in
This burger is definitely a contender on my top burgers in NYC list. Went to @gage.and.tollner for their $45 3 course lunch special they have on Fridays and was super impressed. I opted to add on the Parker house rolls as I heard they were a must get. They are definitely delicious and come out steaming hot with butter dripping on the sides. This is a lot of bread for one person tho, so maybe wait until you're dining with friends. The burger was very luscious and rich. Definitely recommend adding on the cheddar cheese for that extra fatty flavor. The burger was cooked perfectly and in the age of the smash burger craze, it's nice to remember how good a 10oz patty can be. It's served on a house made seeded bun and is dolloped with a house made green goddess dressing which adds an elevated tangy flavor profile to this burger. It comes with a dressed salad that was decent and a much needed break from all the carbs. I also had opted for the crab soup which was deliciously creamy but definitely had minimal crab meat in it. I so love that they add sherry into it at the table- makes it more of an experience. I finished off my dense meal with a G&T donut. It was good, but I wasn't blown away. Could also have been that I was stuffed with bread already! Classic and beautiful interior with cozy seating. Felt very old New York. Service was great. Highly recommend for lunch! @gage.and.tollner
This is going to be really tough for me, because I WANTED
This is going to be really tough for me, because I WANTED to like this place. The decor, the atmosphere created by the vibey trip-hop they were playing when I walked in for Saturday brunch, all of it SEEMED like a place I want to get apps with a new client... but when my waiter came to the table, he was so terribly unprofessional from the start! There was all of this junk about "sparkling or tap" and some bizarre special of the day, which it seemed like he himself made up off the top of his head! So weird! He gave me such a bad vibe from the second we made eye contact! My client, from a MAJOR news organization, ordered a la carte off of their VERY meager carte. There's practically nothing to choose from on this menu! She got a very simple 3 courses: the biscuit with house preserves, the wedge salad with DISGUSTING AND DRY deviled eggs on it (I even have video footage of how dry) and finally, the burger. A simple burger. Well, my concern here is not simply about the loud music, or the bizarre guy embarrassing me in front of a major player in national news, or even the dry egg. My problem is this: When our waiter came with my client's burger, he dropped it at our table and he purposefully called it "OUR HAMBURGER SANDWICH"

The space is gorgeous, but the food is overrated and very salty. There are so many other places that are better in the city.
We really enjoyed the Parker house rolls and the bacon
We really enjoyed the Parker house rolls and the bacon wrapped dates (though for $17 we would have preferred a few more on the plate.) The seafood tower was very good but it came with cocktail sauce and mignonette and did not include a mustard style sauce.
Beautiful restaurant, tasteless food
Beautiful restaurant with a history. Warm ambiance but the food was unfortunately disappointing. Overcooked NY strip, hamburger not available and the beef wellington was tasteless. However, the waitress did het absolute best. The kitchen has some gatching up to do. Not Michelin worthy at all.
Disappointed to say that our dinner fell short in every
Disappointed to say that our dinner fell short in every regard. We were seated at a small, awkwardly located table in the very back on top of another table. It was far too close together, even for NYC standards. Felt to us like they just want to pack you in. Table location was also loud, near the kitchen and the wait staff stands. Complete lack of ambiance sitting there, one of the reasons we selected it. We sat the entire meal without anyone coming over once to ask if we needed another drink, or how the food was. We could see our waitress standing at the side, it made no sense. The most odd thing was that I made a reservation weeks in advance for my husband's birthday. Noted this in the reservation, via a text from the restaurant when they asked, and to our waitress when she asked if we were celebrating anything special. The table next to us was also celebrating a birthday, and the waitress brought them some cookies or something and said happy birthday. Nothing for my husband, which again being so close to this table, how odd. Will never return and will never recommend. The food is just Ok, but for what you'll lack in ambiance and service not worth it at all.
Don’t go to have a good meal, only for the atmosphere
The positive : great interior, great music, good service. The negative: the food. The pork pie is a joke. Bland and contained a bare minimum of meat and mushrooms. The burger : overcooked. The fried chicken : too much batter and chicken was dry. Seriously ?
Not worthy of a Michelin rating anymore
We had high expectations considering this is a Michelin rated and a revered restaurant with a pedigree. Unfortunately, that status did not hold up with the new management for us. We were greeted by an older woman, who was very polite and professional. We came for an early dinner Monday night for a birthday celebration. We were seated in a booth, which helped a small amount from the blasts of cold air that coming thru the restaurant every time diners opened the revolving door. It was very uncomfortable at times. Our waiter, Brandon, seemed to be engaged but it soon became apparent that he was either new or overwhelmed, which regardless of the reason should not have interfered with our service. We started with a couple of items from the happy hour menu. (the HH cocktails are a scam- you pay less because you get less- not fair!) We ordered another beer and it was twice the size! Our classic cocktails were perfection! The oysters arrived and he put the tray down and left. We waited and called him over explain the 4 varieties on the tray. I've never ordered mixed oysters and not told the varieties. He was in a rush. They were delicious and well presented. The parker rolls were buttery and tasty. The caesar salad $18 was awful. It was not traditional and was bland. There was so much radicchio, which was so bitter that we could not eat it. The she-crab soup was average but had no additional crab meat sprinkled on top, as we've had at other places. At $23, was not worth it. We ordered the pork chop $58, strip steak and onion rings $16. The strip steak was so small for $71, we could not understand how they can justify the price. My son who had been to the restaurant before even commented that it was much smaller than he'd seen his last visit. Highly overpriced. Since our waiter never came over to ask how our entrees were, we did not get the opportunity to question him. When he finally did appear after we were done eating and waiting for him, he apologize saying he was "slammed with a big table". Regardless that is no excuse and did not absolve him of his responsibility to us. There is a hierarchy and it failed us. We did see a man who appeared to be a maitre de passing our table a few times but he never engaged us or inquired about our dining experience. BIG MISS doing his job! However, I do want to mention the young man who cleared our dishes, cleaned the crumbs from the table and filled our waters. He was friendly, attentive and did his job excellently! We ordered the baked alaska and asked that candles be put on it. We really did enjoy this dessert and it was just heavenly. This was the highlight of our dinner. What sealed the fate of our review was how we were treated at the end of our time. Our waiter came over and just tossed the bill in the center of the table and walked away. No thank you or any courtesy comment like Happy Birthday! He immediately went and attended the table right behind us. We were so shocked that we paid the bill at the bar and left. On our way out, one of us did tell a young woman at the hostess desk that service was terrible and we could not give them a glowing review. She did not seem interested. Based on our experience, the food and service is not the same restaurant that many of the older reviews are based on. Gage & Tollner have slid. The recent reviews echo the same lackluster service/food as we experienced. The food is not phenomenal to warrant these prices and there are other well deserving restaurants worth exploring in Brooklyn! I hope we caution other potential diners. We should have heeded the recent reviews here and other websites. The new management has work to do.
Overpriced for the experience
We went here with another couple a few days before New Year's eve. We were excited to go due to all the good press we had read about the restaurant. We started with drinks upstairs at the bar- expensive but cool atmosphere and great drinks. Fir the restaurant, service was ok, atmosphere is good. Table seemed too simple for the price (no tablecloth, average dishes, silverware not changed after appetizer). Food was just average and not in line with the price. Steak goes by weight and cost $145 and had too much garlic on it. The best part was the fresh bread and dessert. It's not a restaurant we would return to.
No B-Day Celebration at Gage
I took my husband out this week to Gage & Tollner to celebrate his birthday. It was an excellent meal for each of us in a lovely setting. So why was I so disappointed at the end of it. They ask online to tell them if it is a special occasion, which I did when making the reservation as well as reminding them during the meal. I was told the waiter was aware of it. But there was absolutely no birthday acknowledgment, and I sat enviously as another table enjoyed a birthday candle and song. As we left, I complained to the waiter, who said we would have had to order dessert to celebrate an occasion. No one had told me that. And the manager intimated that I was trying to get free dessert! After spending $180 for two, this was upsetting. Couldn’t they have lit a candle and put it in a cookie, or sang sans something sweet, or told me the policy so I could have ordered something. Both my husband and I would have appreciated the celebration. Henry Taplitz
This long time Brooklyn staple has reopened and it is terrific.my wife had steak and I had pork pie but the hash 5 stars
This place has been closed many years but has been reopened and food is awesome. Service is adequate but the food made it up. The original oysters were delicious and other types are available. However the veal shank is only available at night but the pork pot pie was a worthy substitute. Parking lots are nearby but expensive do consider public transportation. I will return fir the veal at night sometimes soon
overpriced meal
Had a reservation here for early dinner (5:15) on a SAT. Waiter Brian was great. Let me start by saying their prices are quite high. Examples: $21 for a bowl of watery she crab soup with a teaspoon or two of crab (we live in SC and know our she crab soup well). The T-bone steaks were $4.65 per oz - a 28 oz steak was $130.20, of which at least 6 oz was bone. $20 for a martini. Total bill for 4 before tip: $486. I suspect the restaurant owners are doing quite well at these prices.
Beautiful Setting, Pleasant Ambience
Gage & Tollner is a very pleasant restaurant. The decor is gorgeous, the vibe is old worldly. The menu is quite extensive. We had the parker house rolls, hash browns, mushrooms, shared a 12 oz striploin, a cheese plate, some cava to start & a bottle of pinot noir, The parker house rolls were devoured in seconds. The stripling was not a particularly tender cut. We are perplexed as to why G & T do not offer small cuts of meat if only one person at the table wants red meat. The T-bone & the bone rib eye are only available in the 32 to 36 oz range. These must be shared by 2 or 3 people. Service by Teddy was knowledgeable, kind & accommodating. He gets top marks. The sommelier was helpful. And don't get me wrong, we had an enjoyable night. What they do is solid. It just didn't hit it out of the park for us.
Great Spot
We came here after going to Sunken Harbor upstairs. They were so kind and accommodated us with a table despite the fact that they were busy. We weren’t too sure what to expect of the food and drinks, however, we were hungry and it was convenient. All of us ended up being so glad we tried the food as it was soooo good!! Everything was well flavored and the food was fresh. They also had a variety of options for vegetarians. The dessert was also very good. Ambiance: The ambiance feels very much like a Brooklyn upscale restaurant. We sat by the window and it was a perfect seat to people watch. Service: All the wait staff were kind and friendly. We ended up being one of the last ones there and they never made us feel rushed.

Great Service - amazing dinner!!
Read about the site in NYT and bought a reservation at Mother Wolf in LA 2 days later. Worked great and the food was amazing!!!
Worked perfectly!
Got the reservation (that I couldn't get anywhere else) and was able to entertain a group of friends at the infamous Bern's Steakhouse.
Got into Nobu Malibu
Wonderful! My parents are visiting and we have wanted to go to Nobu Malibu for years. I tried getting a reservation myself but it was next to impossible. So glad I was able to buy a reservation on appointment trader for a decent price!
Very easy
Was very hesitant going into this experience but am glad to say that it worked out very well ! will definitely use appointment trader in the future
Fabulous Lunch
I was veeeeeerry skeptical that this would work, particularly at a restaurant as hard to get into as Nobu Malibu, and it was perfect! We had lunch outside on the patio and it was fabulous!
Great reviewer team
Just wanted to take a second to shout out the reviewer team. Even though they probably review hundreds of listings and bids a day, they still take the time to leave great comments and respond relatively quickly. Thanks!
Incredible
I got a reservation to Don Angie, which I've been trying to book for weeks! I am very happy with this service.
Best platform out there!
Super simple, easy, and fast to secure reservations for hard-to-get restaurants and locations!
This app is life changing
This app has opened my world up to so many wonderful new experiences I would never have the chance to have without access to this awesome app! 10/10!
Worked perfectly
Was a little nervous at first but was pleased to see that the booking went through flawlessly.
Highly recommended.
Success on Short Notice
Was able to snag an indoor table at Don Angie through an absolutely seamless worry-free process.
Worked perfectly, thank you!
This is a crazy holiday season in NYC and I was very pleasantly surprised to see that AppointmentTrader works! Will be using again!
Worked flawlessly!
Worked so well! I was a bit nervous, but everything went very smoothly. purchased the reservation, and got into the restaurant seamlessly.
Love this app!
So glad I came across this app :)
Quick table in Miami
I didn’t have my hopes high as it was a party of 4. In 24 hours I had a carbone reservation available! I was very happy as my family really wanted to come here
Prime time, great meal
So easy and had a prime time which I can never seem to get on normal res apps. So worth it
Got impossible NYC res
instead of waiting weeks I got my 4 charles reservation instantly
Worked perfectly to get into Carbone. So delighted
perfect
Worked well, got me into a restaurant with no availability
I was skeptical, and I still don't really know how they managed to find this hard-to-find reservation, but it was a win-win from my point of view, and I'll use this service again.
Last minute reservation for Delilah Las Vegas
Got a last minute reservation, dinner for 2 at Delilah Las Vegas: super impressed! The process was simple, transaction seamless. We had an amazing time! Couldn’t be happier! 😍
It works!
Ok at this point I've attended a reservation purchased on AT by a friend and sold a reservation personally. Both worked pretty smoothly, nothing sketchy about it. A few areas for improvement including a way to more directly communicate between buyers and sellers, but the app always seems to be in development. AT customer support is really(!) responsive and helpful too if you have questions!
Money transfer
As a seller, I like the fact i have the ability now to transfer money out of my AT account and into a bank account. Makes getting the money much easier then the process before.
Love this app
Got to go to places otherwise unreachable
Easy Access
Very easy to get into one of the hardest restaurants to reserve in New York.
Payouts Blocked Because of Sell Through Rate
Does anyone know how AT plans to handle cases where a seller is quitting the platform but has a sell through rate <25%? The error message I got said to fill more bids or find other ways to increase the rate.
Is AT really going to block sellers from withdrawing their money? Especially revenue made before the sell through rate was introduced??

Transferring reservations is not supported in AT. Why not just use the name in the AT screenshot?

Prepaid Reservation Fee
Agreed. Ultimately not addressing this month after month is clearly resulting in a drop in certain venue’s rankings & sales.
Congrats on 3 mil

Need to cancel a bid, not getting a response… how do I do it?
Click on "Take off the Market Option" in your portfolio
Working on your bid?
Your bid has been “matched” with a reservation. From the time a reservation has been located, the seller of the reservation must connect with moderator to give transfer information for reservation. If the seller;however, does NOT respond to reservation transfer, then your bid is reprocessed and returns to the first step, which is connecting your request to a reservation.
Process after bid is accepted.
Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
Where do the Reservations on AppointmentTrader come from?
Mostly from people who don't need their reservations or appointments any longer. AT has no relationship with places listed and acts as a platform connecting buyers and sellers making sure that listed reservations are real and that privacy is not compromised when transacting.
What happens if my bid expires unanswered?
Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.
