Those fries are $15.
It's like 50 cents per fry. Same with onion rings ($16 - they took it off), but they were not edible. $71 dollar steak was underwhleming and just ok. Prices are equivalent to midtown manhattan, but the taste is worse. That's pretty bad.

Let's just say that I've been back here 3 times since trying it 2 weeks ago so if that's not saying the food, service and the ambiance were the standard of dining that you should expect for this price point for entrees and drinks. We've had the "perfect martini" and everything from dessert, salads and starters. Nabbing a table here has also been in our favor. Sitting at the bar for food and drinks and the other times at a table for two. Go here and sit at the bar and ask for Patrick!

We've passed Gage & Tollner's many times, but I finally said, "it's a Brooklyn establishment -- we need to go!" When we got there, it was mid afternoon and we were given the lunch menu (dinner starts at 5 PM). My husband had a broccoli/cheese/rye danish which he felt was unexpectedly interesting. I had the Gage & Tollner chopped salad which was fresh and tasty. He also had the hamburger sandwich -- one of the juiciest burgers he's had in a long time -- very filling! There aren't any pics of the mashed potatoes because they were so delicious on a cold, rainy day that I lost all sense of the need to do anything, much less take photos. The service was outstanding and our waiter explained that the tables at the front aren't reserved - so if we're not organized enough to reserve in advance, we'll definitely come by again to snag a table. Really great find!
Be the first to ReplyThe food is overpriced for pretty mid tier food.
The ambiance may be nice but everything else is highly overrrated.
Be the first to ReplyGage and Tollner, how do I love thee.
Let me count the ways. 1- The place is gorgeous! The old fashion decor is warm and welcoming. I am happy they did not change it much and just restored as much as they did! Perfect vibe for a Steakhouse. 2- The Dolphin Bar upstairs is equally gorgeous and the drink were divine! 3- Last but not least the food! We had to order the she crab soup as we saw it on U Tube. It was delectable! I shared a steak with my daughter. I have never had a better piece of meat! The rib eye was magnificent! Perfectly cooked, medium rare of course! It had perfect amount of fat and seasoned to perfection. For sides were had the butter roasted hash browns and creamed spinach. Both were yummy! The service was spot on. Our server was friendly and attentive. Overall there were no complaints from me or my daughter and son in law!

This burger is definitely a contender on my top burgers in NYC list. Went to @gage.and.tollner for their $45 3 course lunch special they have on Fridays and was super impressed. I opted to add on the Parker house rolls as I heard they were a must get. They are definitely delicious and come out steaming hot with butter dripping on the sides. This is a lot of bread for one person tho, so maybe wait until you're dining with friends. The burger was very luscious and rich. Definitely recommend adding on the cheddar cheese for that extra fatty flavor. The burger was cooked perfectly and in the age of the smash burger craze, it's nice to remember how good a 10oz patty can be. It's served on a house made seeded bun and is dolloped with a house made green goddess dressing which adds an elevated tangy flavor profile to this burger. It comes with a dressed salad that was decent and a much needed break from all the carbs. I also had opted for the crab soup which was deliciously creamy but definitely had minimal crab meat in it. I so love that they add sherry into it at the table- makes it more of an experience. I finished off my dense meal with a G&T donut. It was good, but I wasn't blown away. Could also have been that I was stuffed with bread already! Classic and beautiful interior with cozy seating. Felt very old New York. Service was great. Highly recommend for lunch! @gage.and.tollner

This is going to be really tough for me, because I WANTED to like this place. The decor, the atmosphere created by the vibey trip-hop they were playing when I walked in for Saturday brunch, all of it SEEMED like a place I want to get apps with a new client... but when my waiter came to the table, he was so terribly unprofessional from the start! There was all of this junk about "sparkling or tap" and some bizarre special of the day, which it seemed like he himself made up off the top of his head! So weird! He gave me such a bad vibe from the second we made eye contact! My client, from a MAJOR news organization, ordered a la carte off of their VERY meager carte. There's practically nothing to choose from on this menu! She got a very simple 3 courses: the biscuit with house preserves, the wedge salad with DISGUSTING AND DRY deviled eggs on it (I even have video footage of how dry) and finally, the burger. A simple burger. Well, my concern here is not simply about the loud music, or the bizarre guy embarrassing me in front of a major player in national news, or even the dry egg. My problem is this: When our waiter came with my client's burger, he dropped it at our table and he purposefully called it "OUR HAMBURGER SANDWICH"

The space is gorgeous, but the food is overrated and very salty. There are so many other places that are better in the city.

We really enjoyed the Parker house rolls and the bacon wrapped dates (though for $17 we would have preferred a few more on the plate.) The seafood tower was very good but it came with cocktail sauce and mignonette and did not include a mustard style sauce.

Disappointed to say that our dinner fell short in every regard. We were seated at a small, awkwardly located table in the very back on top of another table. It was far too close together, even for NYC standards. Felt to us like they just want to pack you in. Table location was also loud, near the kitchen and the wait staff stands. Complete lack of ambiance sitting there, one of the reasons we selected it. We sat the entire meal without anyone coming over once to ask if we needed another drink, or how the food was. We could see our waitress standing at the side, it made no sense. The most odd thing was that I made a reservation weeks in advance for my husband's birthday. Noted this in the reservation, via a text from the restaurant when they asked, and to our waitress when she asked if we were celebrating anything special. The table next to us was also celebrating a birthday, and the waitress brought them some cookies or something and said happy birthday. Nothing for my husband, which again being so close to this table, how odd. Will never return and will never recommend. The food is just Ok, but for what you'll lack in ambiance and service not worth it at all.
Be the first to ReplyDelicious steak, very nice service, and a fun environment.
The creamed spinach had a nice sweetness to it, different than most heavily salted ones I've had at comparable steak houses. Would recommend! Awesome cocktails as well. Tried to hit the connected speakeasy, Sunken Harbor, after, but the line was quite long. Not sure if it's worth asking about a res for it with the host after your dinner?
Be the first to ReplyI guess I fall into the category of old enough to remember
I guess I fall into the category of old enough to remember this restaurant in it's later glory, but young enough to post a review here. My family has been dinning here since before I was born. I remember my parents would rave about the she crab soup when talking to friends and family. They would talk about the gas fueled lighting which I also found interesting. When I tried this soup for the first time, I had an emotional experience. When my wife and I first started dating, I took her here and we both ordered the soup. At that time the only gas lights were wall sconces, but the she crab soup was still mind-blowingly amazing. It was so good that you felt the need to tell other people. The restaurant closed before we had a chance to return a second time. We were all surprised by the closure. We thought this place would last forever. Then a couple of weeks ago, I was poking around online and found out about the reopening. I was quick to make a reservation. I was happy to see that everything looks pretty much the same. It's an absolute time capsule indeed. The only thing different was the young staff and patrons. I remember being one of the youngest in the restaurant before the closing, now I'm almost the oldest. We had arrived early, so we sat at the bar for cocktails which were very well executed. This gave us some needed time to soak up the well preserved surroundings. I had us added to the waiting list for the sunken harbor club upstairs, but was notified a few minutes later via text that the wait was over 2 hours. When we sat down I noticed the menu had different selections, but the she crab soup was kept a tradition. I ordered the soup. My wife had doubts about the soup being as good considering the current world situation, so she chose another option. I was hoping to prove her wrong. Well...the soup was good, but nothing like what I remembered. I let her have a taste. She knew just by looking at it that it wasn't going to be the same. She had the same opinion after she tried it. It didn't have the impact of what we remembered. The previous version was really that good, and was an experience in itself. Fortunately the rest of the food items ordered were indeed very good. The service had it's ups and downs. It took a nose dive during coffee service. No sugar or spoons were brought when the coffee was served. I asked for these items, and only one spoon came, along with sugar. As I was paying the bill, the sunken harbor hostess came over to let us know that a table was available. This little upstairs spot is not to be missed. Work out the minor kinks in the service, and please please please fix the soup.
Be the first to ReplyThe absolute worse meal.
They seated us next to a couple with two screaming little kids who were kicking the booth and making a huge scene for over an hour. When we said something nicely to them the entitled mom had a fit got up and got in our face and made religious slurs at us and said since she waited over two hours for the table she was able to do what she wanted and the restaurant did nothing to mitigate the situation. Who takes a 2 yr old out at 9 at night and waits two hours!! This was by far the worse dining for the money in over ten years. BAD management. Never offered to move our table, even though we complained. Did not come over once or offer even a drink as consolation. Save your money and run far away. Crowded, impersonal and really bad.

We had a late reservation on a Monday night and showed up with an additional person. G&T's staff was accommodating and provided excellent service and food. Good job.
Be the first to ReplyNice experience.
Great service but we were one of the last seated tables so it felt a bit rushed. Food was very good. Steak melted in your mouth. Very flavorful. I enjoyed all 3 sauces for the steak. Wedge salad was delicious. Oysters were fresh and the hot sauce we asked for was home made and was maybe the best thing on the table! I'm a sauce snob! Roasted hash brown was uniquely delish and I have decided I only want to eat my potatoes cooked this way hence forth. Halibut was cooked perfectly and the mustardy kick was outstanding. Bill was $600 with tip for 4 people and we shared. We got the house rolls (would do those twice!) 3 appetizers (oysters, wedge salad and soup-which they split in two for the two couples), 2 dinner entrees (rib eye and halibut), 2 sides (creamed spinach and hash brown potato) bottle of red wine, a cocktail, and an espresso. No room in our bellies for dessert, though dessert at the other tables looked phenomenal. Ambiance gave old school steak house vibes. Dark and mature. A little musical entertainment might jazz up the place, no pun intended. The space is wide open and very loud with all the dinner table conversations. The one bathroom was gender neutral, two stalls with accordion style doors. The space was a smidge awkward given the space constraint - it's tight. The floor was wet and there were tissues on the floor. Counter was filthy. I was disappointed in the cleanliness of the bathroom for an establishment that is at this price point. This needs improvement and regular rounding. The bathroom should be as clean as your kitchen.

Probably the worst service I've ever experienced in a restaurant. I politely contacted the restaurant to discuss several days later, and they never responded to my message.
Be the first to ReplyIt was a cousins dinner during the Christmas Holiday.
We didn't make a reservation but arrived at opening and waited in line. We got lucky and sat at a table in front. Having read up on G&T , I was super excited to come here knowing the history of the restaurant. Their amazing story of how this place was abandoned for years (untouched) and finally purchased by a restaurant group promising to preserve it's legacy. They did just that. Walking in, you felt as if you had immediately traveled back to the early 1900s. I commend the owners on being true to their promise. However, I was a bit disappointed with the food. The seafood tower was the highlight of the meal. After that, there were some big misses. The biggest being the steak. We were 6 guys and shared a porterhouse for 3 and Prime Rib. There was not one bite that gave me those happy feelings when ordering an expensive piece of meat at a steakhouse. It was so underwhelming. The porterhouse was fatty and chewy. The Prime Rib felt no different than the porterhouse. It was all just one boring note. I was shocked and felt ripped off. As for the rest of our order, it was fine. However, did not understand the hype of their sourdough bread. It was average at best. My only other note is about their speakeasy. We didn't get a chance to go -- the wait was too long, but I don't understand the idea of having a tiki bar speakeasy with a traditional restaurant like Gage and Tollner. The two seem like polar opposites. A cigar lounge serving Manhattans, Old Fashions and Gin and Tonics seem more appropriate. Either way, i hope G&T fixes their food because they deserve to be around forever.
Be the first to ReplyThis is such a quintessential New York restaurant.
My Dad went to Gage and Tollner in the 80s, back when he was dating a girl from Fort Greene. My Aunt went to Gage and Tollner on her last day on the job when she worked in downtown Brooklyn more than 20 years ago. I'm sure others could find similar stories if their family members spent time in Brooklyn and were fortunate enough to visit. What I'm saying is that Gage and Tollner is one of those iconic restaurants. That means something. The landmarked interior is gorgeous, the food is good (the desserts are absolutely phenomenal), and it feels like a special event, even if it's just a Tuesday (and they save tables for walk-ins: try your luck any night of the week).
Be the first to ReplyFirst of all, the service here was phenomenal.
The appetizers were also amazing (crispy hen of the woods mushroom and devils on horseback). The two standouts were the pork pot pie and the coconut cake dessert. Order them!Unfortunately the steak wasn't great. Both steaks that we ordered came out room temperature/cold. The waitress offered to heat them up, but they still came out room temperature after reheating. We assumed it was a fluke, but reading other reviews and speaking with friends who've also been here, it seems this is a regular occurrence. The sides were good, but much smaller portions than most NYC steakhouses. For a pricey steakhouse, underwhelming steak and 2-person max sized sides are just unacceptable. It wouldn't take much for this place to be so much better!
Be the first to ReplyMy wife and I ate there this evening, the 12th of January.
The service was phenomenal, our waiter was "Thee Andrew."He was very pleasant, had great suggestions, and was able to take a few moments to talk with us.The presentation of their steaks, the side dishes, and an amazing Baked Alaska justified the pricing. While this is more of a special occasion destination for us, (Happy Birthday to my wife!),I wouldn't hesitate to recommend to friends and work colleague's for a great meal!
Be the first to ReplyThe food wasn't that good.
We ordered a medium rare steak that came out medium. And the sauces that came with the steak weren't the best pairing. For example one of them was a sweet bbq sauce. Also got a bone marrow appetizer that was too heavy and oily. Service was good though. But for the price point, i would go elsewhere.
Be the first to ReplyI found this gem from an online food-fluencer.
Reservations are hard to get, I had to stalk their website for a little while to get a table for two. We were warmly greeted and seated as soon as we walked in. Our server was super sweet and laughed at all of our corny jokes. There was also a beautiful curly haired blonde bartender that was like looking at art in motion all night but onto the important part, the foodAppetizers: we ordered the she-crab soup, snails in a parsley puree with garlic cream, and the special of the night, clam bellies in a miso butter if I remember correctly. All incredible. There were chunks of crab in the soup and it was jam packed with parsley. The snail was phenomenal and the blend of flavors in the sauces I wanted to lick the plate clean. The clam belly was also delicious. The waiter warned us it would be briny so I was a little apprehensive but it was perfect. Main: we ended up getting a 30oz ribeye, they serve you a steak to share depending on the size of your group. It was perfectly seasoned, perfectly done to my medium rare request, and went so well with their homemade sauces. I ended up mixing all three. For sides, we got the onion rings, crispy, salty, and sweet, brussel sprouts, my friend enjoyed them, and creamed spinach, a lot more nutmeg forward than cheese which I wasn't crazy about. Dessert: chevre cheesecake, the gamey goat flavor that usually shines through chevre was super mild and it was a pretty sweet so I ended up removing the fruit puree, and a coconut layer cake which I thought was phenomenal and the better of the twoAll in all, im already planning another trip back. It was a great meal and I enjoyed my time
Be the first to ReplyExceptional service.
Food was fantastic. Ambience was great. Would definitely come back.
Be the first to ReplyI'd rate Gage and Tollner four and a half stars.
Classic NY steakhouse located by the Fulton mall. Not too much parking nearby so train or taxi service are probably the better modes of transportation here. There's biking parking out front, so I guess that works as well.Reservations are strongly recommended. Seemed like on counter seating at the bar was open to walk-ins and those filled up quickly. They had a great wine menu. Every extensive. A bit difficult to approach but the sommelier was quite helpful in offering a couple recommendations that would pair well with our food. We settled on the 2014 Bandol which was a great selection. Very complex with great developments as it decanted.First, we had the Parker house rolls. This ended up being my wife's favorite item. I thought they were great too. Fluffy and airy. The perfect buttery dinner roll. For the appetizer course, we had the she-crab soup, the snails, and the fluke crudo. My favorite of the group was the fluke crudo. It was very much on trend with the late omakase trend. Big serving of raw fluke with cucumber, watermelon, and a herby vinegar / oil dressing. For the main course, we shared the ribeye with creamed spinach, roasted squash, and "hash brown" which were potato gratin stacks. Ribeye was cooked to a perfect medium rare and seasoned delightfully. Very nice cut of meat. I also appreciated that they had info on where their meat is sourced from. All the sides were great too.Service was top notch. Exactly what you'd expect from a NYC steakhouse. Super attentive without being intrusive. Helpful and polite. We lingered for a while as we finished our wines and used the restroom; they did not rush us at all. They even brought us more water.I only noticed one restrooms but there may have been more. It was a unique restroom. It had two stalls and a urinal but it could be locked. It was sort of "team" restroom that you could use with a friend or two.
Be the first to ReplyAtmosphere, appetizers and service were terrific.
Big disappointment on the steak offerings, though. For a place called a chop house, I expected to be able to get a filet mignon (not offered) or a rib eye (offered, but only in a size 28 ounces or larger!). I settled for a sirloin, and while it was cooked perfectly medium rare, I really didn't enjoy it as much as when I go to any of my regular steak houses. And having to pay $10 for four Parker House rolls is a bit much. Had they been delivered as "just a regular part of a meal" I would have been favorably impressed. Having to pay for them, and how much we paid for them, left me with a pretty bad impression.
