This was our first night in Reykjavik and it certainly was a great first impression of Icelandic cuisine! It’s a set tasting menu which is becoming quite common feature in top end restaurants around Europe. And this one is quite extensive, 12 different dishes and two of which has three separate elements! The opening salvo is one of those multi element courses, a smoked trout and sour cream tartlet, a delicious vegetable broth & horseradish cream and a small Onion cake (think carrot cake but more savoury) and two furry balls of wolffish (which wasn’t listed on the menu card). These were all excellent, the broth was very good. This was followed by the bread course, fresh roll with tasty spruce butter ( similar to a cream cheese) Next there was another course that also not listed on the card, it was single mussel in a delicious sauce. Next was a salad dish….and when a salad dish is a flavour packed as this was you know your night will be memorable! There were two cod dishes next, again full of flavour. Then we had two lamb dishes, they are quite small but within such an extensive menu that is relative. The first, lamb shank was very good. But the second, lamb loin, was served in a broth which was overwhelming in aniseed flavour, it completely dominated the mild lamb. This was the only disappointment in the entire menu, just aniseed and nothing else could be tasted. Also having two lamb dishes could be an issue with quite a few people, like my husband, who are not great fans of lamb, he did gamely try each but would not order them if a lá carte. Two more flavour bombs were next, again when the non meat dishes are that good you have a good mind in the kitchen. Then finally the dessert, this was the second course that had three pieces… a slice of light chocolate roll cake (think Swiss roll cake) , a pickled rhubarb chocolate and ice cream, and Lemon thyme vinegar caramel petit trois, these we delicious. We also had coffee, they only serve a filter coffee, in a nice ceramic pitcher. This was one of two Michelin restaurants we tried in Reykjavik and this was the superior. Highly Recommended
