Damian Los Angeles Reviews from The Last Year
The food is overhyped on social media and there seemed to
The food is overhyped on social media and there seemed to be a lack in overall balance on flavors. I like that they offered some different dishes like the salmon and ant tostada and duck but didn't leave me feeling entirely satisfied. The service was mediocre. Waiter got the spice levels wrong on the salsas and food was poorly timed. Waited an awkwardly long time for first cold dishes to come out. Ambiance was romantic. May be a good first date spot if you don't care too much about the food.
This was an over hyped restaurant.
. Just all over the place. I honestly feel like they are trying to create a style of Mexican food that' targets an authentic taste, but it truly does not . Too much going on with the ingredients and the delivery. The service was okay. Hostess great. Server, not so much. . Very rush. Nice atmosphere. The inside. You have to get past the dead rats from outside. Other than that, the place was okay: nothing to rage about. I wouldn't go again. I had to visit a couple of times to make a fair judgement .
We had a reservation for 5 at 5:30 pm on a Monday.
We had to valet the car for $13 because there wasn't parking immediately available in the lot and we were running late. When we were walking in, we noticed there was relatively reasonable turnover if we wanted to wait. When we arrived, the front saw we were 4 adults + 1 baby, and confirmed with us to change our table from a round to a booth. We appreciated this, especially after we realized we didn't do our research and Damian does not have high chairs. This is what we ordered: Que sabor! - I enjoyed their less sweet version of pisco sour. Aguachile with amaranth horchata - refreshing, sweet, and a little nutty Salmon tostada - this might have been my favorite. It was a lion king roll-like sauce meets salmon poke on a crunchy chip. Carrot aguachile - this was a little salty but the sauce was very flavorful. Tlayuda - this wasn't my favorite. Ours was raw veggies on top of pork fat spread over a large crispy tortilla. Raw zucchini isn't my thing but I bet this could be okay with other veggies. Tamal de ricotta - this was my second favorite. Surprisingly balanced sweet and corny. So unique and would definitely get this again. Dry aged branzino - well grilled and a bit salty but very flavorful with the corn tortillas and salsas. Pollito al pastor - my partner loved this a lot, especially the pineapple butter that went with this. It's basically a breaded chicken katsu. I liked the fish more though. Overall this was a great experience although maybe next time I'll go without my baby. It was familiar since I've gone to Pujol, but had its own flair!
Damian has made its way in the rounds for client dinners
Damian has made its way in the rounds for client dinners amongst my company. It's somewhere I've always wanted to go, so finally when I was able to host a client dinner of my own, I was naturally very excited. Although I haven't been to many fine dining Mexican restaurants, I can definitively say Damian is one of the best. We essentially ordered everything off the menu: Caesar tostada, ceviche, al pastor, and of course, the duck carnitas. I know they're a whopping $98, but if you're not ordering the duck carnitas here I don't know what you're doing. I thoroughly loved everything about this spot. The ambience is top notch, the servers were friendly, and the food was out of this world. I do what to give a shout out to the host for being very accommodating which our fluctuating party size - she was super nice and sat us at a great table! Damian is legit and if you have the budget to splurge, is a must go-to.

Fun dining experience at a well-appointed restaurant with sophisticated offerings. The staff were accommodating and attentive. The ceviche was excellent - light and complex.

Usually the sequel to an epic film is never as powerful as the original. However, my second dining experience at Damian last night took an already exceptional impression to new heights. Having tried an entirely different set of courses, the level of gastronomic exceptionalism remains second to none. From the exotic blend of spices in the guacamole to the incredibly refreshing and delectable ceviche, my palate was in uncharted waters. The yuzu flavor of the agua fresca provided delectable refreshment to the savory dishes reminiscent of Mayan royalty that followed. If the meal was not exquisite enough, the service was impeccable and even included a detailed explanation of the Michoacan provenance of the mezcal that was accompanied by an array of dried sundries. Our meal concluded with three desserts-all of which would be reason enough to award Damian with an additional Michelin star.
This is my favorite LA restaurant restaurant.
The swordfish is my favorite item on the menu but so sad about the new portion. It has been reduced to 1/3 of the original size but the price only reduced by 1/4. I understand restaurant struggles but the portion was so tiny last night. I wanted to cry.
This is our third visit here.
We love that they kept some popular dishes on the menu while introducing new ones. Everything we ordered was fantastic. We were hesitant about ordering the swordfish, as it can often be dry, but they cooked it perfectly--moist, tender, and full of flavor. We loved the banana leaf flan, which we ordered during our previous two visits... but we decided to try a different dessert this time. The caramel corn soft serve was just okay. Next time, we'll stick with the banana leaf flan.
Expensive but totally worth it.
The ambiance was perfect gem in the art district. The drinks were amazing as well.
Everything was absolutely impeccable in terms of food
Everything was absolutely impeccable in terms of food quality and flavors that were true to Mexican cuisine... but in new combinations... I'm not a drinker but the waiter gave us the best tasting tequila to sip... on the house. If you have the money to spend, yes go for it!!
Amazing.
Great flavors but small portions. Everything was so flavorful in the right ways. The salmon tostada, the octopus, the duck... so good. I wish I could eat here every week. I've been here twice and each time the service was excellent. Recommendations for food and drinks have been A+. I cannot wait until my next visit!
Dined at Damian last night.
I have to say, I agree with most of the reviews - good but overpriced. Really cool, chic, well decorated space. Noisy. The valet is nuts on a Saturday night, mostly because of Bestia across the way. We were seated right away. Nice, large round table. The sommelier came to the table (we're not wine drinkers) and described the cocktails. Majority are mezcal based. I'm not a mezcal fan, so I ordered a classic margarita. The menu is pretty small. Waiter took our orders. Drinks took forever to come. When they finally did, everyone's looked and tasted good. Mine (the margarita) tasted like it had been sitting on the counter, melting for a while. It would have tasted better at El Torito. Not even a lime to garnish it. I wanted to send it back, but we didn't see any wait-staff/sommelier for a while so I just drank it. When the waiter finally arrived, and asked how the drinks were, I told him mine was terrible, and he didn't know how to handle the information - basically just took it in and said "oh." Food was quite tasty but it is really expensive for what you get - even if it is elevated Mexican, it still is Mexican. Standout was the calamari appetizer, the Branzino entree and the duck carnitas entree. As others have said here, $98 for the duck carnitas is crazy, but it did taste great. The starter portions are tiny - there were 4 of us, and we each got a little bite of most things. I'm glad we went - nice decor and very tasty - but for the prices they charge, I'd expect more.
Omg Damian is consistently so, SO good! We've been here 5-6
Omg Damian is consistently so, SO good! We've been here 5-6 times since they opened a few years ago and the service, food, and ambiance are all incredible. I'm honestly always surprised how I never have trouble getting a reservation here (unlike Bestia that's right across the street). The ambiance is wonderful for dinner and this is the perfect date night spot. Dim lighting, modern design, and beautiful tropical plants lining the backside of the tables indoors - what more can you ask for. Plus the service is amazing. The servers we've had are always so attentive, with courses coming out in a well-paced manner throughout the meal. The drinks are also incredible. They have a wide selection of Tequilas and Mezcals and amazing mixed drinks. On this most recent trip for an early Valentine's Day date night, we were a little disappointed that they had changed their menu since we used to love certain main courses (it looked like almost everything had been changed except for the guacamole and a few desserts - we were sad to see the pork belly taco main course go...). Regardless of the change in menu though, all the dishes we ordered were still delicious. For drinks, my boyfriend had the Que Sabor and I had a Mezcal Margarita. Presentation of the drinks was beautiful as always and they were so delicious. We ordered the guacamole, crudo de atún, and charred octopus huarache. The crudo was definitely the stand-out dish - the tuna was so fresh and buttery and everything that comes along with the tuna in the bowl compliments it so well (honestly, never would have thought to pair raw tuna with green olives and basil, but it worked). For mains, we shared the branzino and carne asada with a side of heirloom frijoles. The side was necessary along with the guacamole we ordered earlier and the 3 complimentary salsas to make our tacos. We appreciated that they kept the handmade tortillas coming. Out of the two dishes, the carne asada was the stand-out. It was truly cooked perfectly and was so flavorful. In all the times we've been here, we never have room for dessert, but one day we are determined to save room so we can try the hibiscus meringue!
Best high end Mexican food I've ever had.
Will come here again. Service was perfect, they cleaned our table every time we even had a crumb on it lol. This place has a very nice vibe to it. 5+ stars for me. Uni tostada and tamale was my favorite. Only thing is I choked on the green onion maybe it should be cut or maybe that's just my fault feb17,2024

Fantastic food and atmosphere! Went with a large group and everyone loved their dishes. Creative and very tasty. Can't wait to go back.
This restaurant is in the same plaza as Bestia, so parking
This restaurant is in the same plaza as Bestia, so parking is a bit tough if you don't want to do valet. Came here for dinner, we had been wanting to go here for quite some time after finding out that it's under the same restaurant as Pujol in CDMX. We had reservations and so we were able to be seated right away. Highly recommend making reservations as it gets quite busy. I loved the interior and ambiance of the restaurant. Unfortunately, the food and service wasn't as good as we hoped for and it wasn't worth the price. We got: -uni tostada ($20): the tostada and other ingredients overpowered the taste of the uni. -guacamole ($19): this was the best thing we ordered -ceviche ($28): decent but nothing amazing -octopus huarache ($32): served on tostada -lobster Al pastor ($48): good, but portion is very small -duck carnitas ($98): extremely fatty and duck flavor didn't stand out Cocktails were also extremely disappointing, we ordered the frozen yuzu, mandarina, and the Paloma. None of the cocktails were great, would not recommend the cocktail list here. Overall, wanted to love this place but disappointed. Would skip out, Bestia next door is a much better choice.
Trying this place out for dinner reminded me why I don't
Trying this place out for dinner reminded me why I don't bother with fancy restaurants. Yes, the restaurant itself is gorgeous and modern. Service is great from start to finish. However, the food....is just ridiculously overpriced for what you get. Mind you, I'm born and raised in LA and grew up with the best Mexican food you can find outside of Mexico - but what's also great about Mexican food is that it's affordable, democratic, and accessible. This restaurant will impress you by how much they can overcharge you by 'elevating' some of their spin on classic dishes. You pay $30 for a tiny tostada - yes it's a unique and delicious tostada, but nothing that knocks me off my socks. Sure, it's cool they use fire ants for the sauce, but you cannot see or taste the difference. The swordfish was odd and underwhelming, and it was awkward learning how to assemble a taquito with it every time. The shockingly tiny glass of $10 agua fresca looked nice but honestly didn't taste any better than one I can get from my local street vendor. Their $20 guacamole also didn't taste any more special than what I get at Chiptotle - it was actually pretty bland and flavorless for me. I also really hate paying $5 for water and 4% for staff health insurance. With the exorbitantly high prices that they overcharge you with already from their menu, I'm sure management can afford to pay for their own staff's 'wellness' and not kick the bill to the customer. Ridiculous. It was cool checking this trendy place out, but I would never spend my hard-earned money here - I felt ripped off at every opportunity and still left feeling hungry.
I Eat at Damian Every Time I'm in LA
The food here is outstanding, with surprising yet perfectly matched flavors in every bite. The service is impeccable, and the atmosphere is cool. While some people find it "expensive," food this creative, so well prepared, is worth it. One tip: do not skip the calmar, it's phenomenal. To each his own.

This was my 4th time there, and I just love the food and the vibes inside. The service is great, they have a lot of employees, so even when it's busy, your server manages to check in with you quite often. Plus, they even fold your napkin if you step away for a sec! We came back because I was craving their duck breast steak (duck al pastor), but they discontinued it...! It was such a bummer but we ordered Duck Carnitas instead and it was pretty good as well. Not sure if I'll be back again since they don't do the duck breast anymore, but overall, it's definitely a cool spot to check out.
I'm surprised at the reviews here.
The food is average at best. Definitely trying too hard. The ambience is great (except for the nutribullet that was blending up drinks at the bar which overpowered the music and our voices... why?!) the space is beautiful inside. The service is ok. They take forever to get your orders but are over eager to clean and are picking up plates that still have food on them. The chicken was the worst. $50 for what was described as a boneless chicken breast but I'm sure was thigh meat. Steak was so tough and undercooked to how we ordered. The ceviche was great. Guacamole was good. Octopus terrible - dry sliced on the masa. Cauliflower elite terrible, watery cauliflower with no sauce. $400 for three people with drinks. So not worth it.
