Doesn't live up to the hype
Bad service, very loud music couldn’t hear my daughter talk , hot chili smoke inside the restaurant makes your eyes hurt. Food not bad not good.
Be the first to ReplyOne of the best restaurants in LA
LA Time’s 2022 Best Restaurant of the Year and James Beard award recipient - with those kind of accolades, of course I needed to try. Made a reservation a month out online and had dinner at 6pm on a Saturday with my dad. We ate outside in the alley and I liked the outdoor seating because it was a bit loud and cramped inside (although if that’s the vibe you’re going for, it’s not bad). My dad had the wine flight, which on that day was $60 (its market price) and the theme was Gamay. The som did a great job of explaining the backgrounds of the wines and our waitress Pam was so nice. I had a Thai iced tea (not listed on the menu) and they give you water to serve yourself with at the table. We got the pork ribs for our app; although it wasn’t as tender as I thought it would be, the sauce was really tasty. I appreciated the wet wipe they gave us to use after eating it. The southern Thai fried chicken was my favorite dish - it comes in 5 pieces and some sticky rice with a sweet chili sauce and a vinegar sauce. The rice flour batter was crispy and the chicken was juicy. My dad found the drunken noodles to be the best, as there was nice flavor and the right amount of spice. We were deciding between this and noodles supreme, but ultimately the drunken noodles are spicy whereas the noodles supreme are just primarily made with eggs and onions. Service was on top of everything and it was cool being in the alley (it was a little cramped inside). Bathrooms are available inside and are single occupant. Credit cards accepted. Metered street parking.

Perfection in the Culinary Wasteland we call the San Fernando Valley. Have waited 50 years for a creative unique experience like this and finally Anajak has nailed it. We loved everything about the restaurant. Huge shout out to Som Michael who paired every dish perfectly. He added a whole wonderful dimension to the meal. The Fried chicken is over the top amazing. So is the Thai huge prawns. Even the bok choi was uniquely wonderful with the best mushrooms you could ever have. We decided to venture out with the rice with egg and beef and which was delightful. We finished with fantastic sweet mango and sticky rice and Tokaji wine recommended by the staff which was another incredible adventure. Every member of the team was helpful and friendly from the host to the busboys and servers. We no longer need to fly to NYC to have a fun creative inventive culinary night out thanks to Anajak Thai!
Be the first to ReplyMassive disappointment, mediocre food at best
The hype over this restaurant is unbelievable and puzzling, to put it mildly. We had a reservation for three and were only seated 25 minutes later. The restaurant is packed tightly and the seating is not entirely comfortable. We have been eating Thai food in LA for 30 years, and have also traveled in Thailand. There were three of you and we ordered five dishes. Their so-called signature dish, Southern-style fried chicken, is just like any other fried chicken: one of the two sauces accompanying it was a commercial sweet and spicy sauce that we have used at home for years. The sticky rice and mango for dessert was nondescript: the coconut flavor was barely discernible and typically it comes with roasted sesame seeds, but this one didn't. The asparagus was good but the serving was abysmally small--much less than what you would get even at a highly priced nouvelle California cuisine restaurant. The only dish that we had which I would say was very unusual and well-prepared was the Haw Mok, a steamed fish curry custard. Nearly everything is substantially over-priced: they say that wine by the glass is $18, but we were charged $23 for one such glass and wines by the glass are not listed on the menu by name. We ordered one steamed rice and got two and were charged for two. On the whole, a disappointing experience--all the more so given the outsized reputation of the restaurant.

Mediocre food, poor service. We arrived and we’re told to wait until the rest of the party turns up. The table was ready, but we basically stood in the corridor. Food was OK, but nothing special. Toilets mucky. Empty boxes scattered all over the restaurant. There’s no way this is an award winning restaurant in LA. Overall, over priced and disappointing.

The menu was unique and descripted .What we got was just plain old American Thai taste. The Fried chicken at $30.00 was just unimpressive ,dull. The Dry fish was better but not for $47.00 better . The $17.00 least expensive glass of wine was fair at best. And for those of us that would like a cold Singha beer,no way because no beer. I asked about bringing in one beer ,the reply was a flat no. How about rap music with your Thai dinner ? They have that to. Really ! As far as the sticky rice, just a splat on the plate and dry. So Total with tax was $107.00 .$10.00 tip came to $127.00 .No parking available either. Skip this joint friends.

This was our first time eating here. We read all the wonderful reviews and figured it would be a great place for my wife's birthday dinner since we both love good Thai food.
I checked on Open Table and Resy to see if it was possible/necessary to make reservations but could not find a way to do so. There was an option for being added to a waitlist, so I chose that and immediately received a text saying the estimated wait time for a party of four was just 15 minutes. Not bad!
I was a little surprised to see all the tables were set up in the alley next to the restaurant, but given all the Covid issues, this wasn't really a big deal though as hot as it was last night (94* at 6pm) it would have been really nice to have had a fan or two to move the air a bit.
I was somewhat surprised by the extremely limited (one small page) menu, but the selections that were offered were some of our favorites so it worked out well.
We were told that they were famous for their Southern Thai Fried Chicken, so we put in an order for the table and it did not disappoint at all. First time ever having fried chicken at a Thai restaurant, but it won't be the last time!
The rest of our food was equally delicious. We had panang curry, peanut curry, cashew chicken and Pad Thai. All amazing.
So why only three stars? To be honest, I really wanted to give 5 stars because the food and service were excellent. But what absolutely killed the special evening for us was the obnoxiously loud and completely vulgar selections of *GANGSTA RAP* being played on two speakers right behind our table. We asked for it to be turned down (or OFF!!) several times (and it was) but for whatever reason, the volume kept coming back up.
Who on Earth plays ghetto rap at what would otherwise be a nice, respectable restaurant with families trying to have dinner?? Every other word was "F#%!" or "N%#&$"!!! There were even children who had to listen to this crap!! It was beyond disgusting to the point of being offensive. Whomever was responsible for that needs to find a different line of work because they really missed the mark.
We may go back again, but not until they do away with the ghetto vibes.
Thai Dinner twice
We ate at Anajak Thai twice and different people in our party had different experiences. First, this place is one of the better Thai in the area. Some had the chicken curry which they liked but others did not.. The drunken noodles were not to the caliber of most Thai places elsewhere.or lacked spices or taste. The service was slow and they were very lacking in refilling water at both visits. It's an ok place for Thai food but good for the area.

Do you not miss this restaurant! A family-owned establishment for decades, it is now run by the son who is a wine maven and adding many more authentic Thai dishes that are not often seen in local establishments. The food is exquisite. The wine list is fabulous, filled with boutique bottles that totally work with the spices in Thai cooking. This restaurant is also attractive, filled with fine art painted by family members. Well worth a visit!

Had lunch with family. Food reasonable price and very appealing and delicious Thai ice tea was great. Service good despite the crowd

The Manager was very personable. The place is small and not fancy, but the food is great. The satays were amazing so was the BBQ pork collar.

Visiting family in LA, went to lunch there and it was crowded. Despite that and only few servers, we got our food fast and the service was great. Food was outstanding.
Be the first to ReplyGreat family run Thai restaurant in Sherman Oaks
Our family loves going to this restaurant! The kids love the pad thai and we always enjoy whatever else we order. We've gotten to know the husband and wife owners who are really friendly. They even take reservations!
We go specifically for the fried whole pompano. The tamarind sauce is addictive!
So glad we found them!
They open at 2 on the weekends, so don't plan on an early lunch :)
Fantastic food!
Whenever we are in the area, we make a point of eating here. The food is superb and the staff is friendly and knowledgeable. Everything we have tried (and that is most of the menu) has been excellent. Yum!

The food is outstanding. The room is charmless. But go for the curry and everything else. Best Thai I've had in a decade.

The food was delicious, priced reasonably, good service. Decor is a bit worn, could use some updates.
