Allen Street Grill State College Reviews from The Last Year
The very best food in State College! First time here and
The very best food in State College! First time here and I'm afraid after this review we will have a hard time getting a reservation! Service is top notch with our outstanding server Susan who answered all our questions on various cocktails and menu choices and recommended pairings for our meal. Awesome. . Great space and gorgeous marble bar with excellent bar service and a variety of interesting cocktails. The room was energetic and windows everywhere with view of the college scene down below. This is our new go to place for dinner and after dinner cocktails at the intimate 1920's style bar area in a separate area outside the dining room.
The food, drinks, service and location are always amazing.
Our favorite place for fine dining with our son. Always amazing.
What this restaurant does well, it does particularly well.
The carbonara is excellent, and easily their top entrée. The limoncello makes for an excellent dessert. Conversely, other entrées, such as the flounder, are okay but not necessarily the best you'll have. The location's ambience is very inviting, conveying, a sense of intimacy and elegance. The service is very good and attentive. It very much has the feel of a date night destination on a Thursday, Friday or Saturday evening.
We came back to this restaurant because we thoroughly
We came back to this restaurant because we thoroughly enjoyed the Shellfish Ribollita. Of course we ordered it and it lived up to our expectations yet again. We also ordered the Bucatini Carbonara because we had seen another patron enjoying it and we looked forward to enjoying it as well. It was good but not amazing. We were told by our server that her favorite item on the menu is the duck meatloaf so we hope that we can make it back there before the menu changes. We love the atmosphere and the cocktails are well balanced and nicely presented.
Best restaurant in town.
From the farm to table methodology, to creative and delicious food, to the huge all organic wine list, to the craft cocktails, to servers who know what they're talking about because they've tried everything on the menu. Have dined here a dozen times and has not failed to impress me with each and every visit. Best in town.
This dinner just blew me away.
It was just a simple pre christmas dinner out at a nice place, but I was in for a surprise. Started with the Sweet Potato Soup with wild rice fritters, holy cow was that good. Next time I'll get my own instead of sharing with hub. I had the ribeye with salt and vinegar potatoes and green beans. Let me just say that I have never actually eaten a whole green bean. Until now. They were fabulous. I was cautious and thinking about substituting but our waiter convinced me to give them a try and I loved them. I also don't like salt and vinegar potato chips so again I was concerned but figured what the hey, I don't have to eat them. I don't know, this chef is into malt vinegar and he is an expert with it. Had a lovely time and will definitely go back.
Been here several times.
Only once has the food been exceptional. My last two visits after my initial visit became less enjoyable for the high price point. Duck was served to me rare, and the skin that was like a rubber band not even Crisp cooked correctly.
What an incredible experience! Loved everything about our
What an incredible experience! Loved everything about our trip here. The ambiance is wonderful, the staff were great, and the food was absolutely incredible! Everything was seasoned perfectly and hit all the right notes. Left us wanting to try everything coming out of this wonderful kitchen. We can't wait to come back.
I recently celebrated an anniversary here.
The food was fabulous as usual, the wine list is extensive and has great featured choices, and the cocktail program is solid. One of my absolute favorite restaurants in town.
Excellence all around.
We ate here with a party of 7 during parents weekend. Service was outstanding. Food was amazing. Will definitely eat here again when visiting State College.
I don't get the good reviews.
I attribute them to the fact that this is a small, modest college town and a lot of the patrons may not be used to anything better. Compared to any decent restaurant in a modest-sized city, the place is just dreadful. Bills itself as "fine dining" - but in a small college town, I'm not sure they know what that is. They were out of nearly everything on the menu. We ordered the "grilled octopus" - and got some tiny, sautéed calamari. Calamari and Octopus are not synonymous, and they shouldn't advertise one and serve the other (especially if they are "fine dining"). They had an Italian seafood linguine - but covered it in cheese (cheese doesn't go on seafood in Italian cuisine). The dish smelled fishy. The service was slow and bad - college kids who don't know what they are doing. I get it - it's a college town. But then DON'T hold yourself out as "fine dining". The desert menu was uninspiring - even our kids, who live for dessert, didn't want anything. The place looks nice enough and the mixed drinks were not bad - that's the best I can say. Their other restaurant, the Corner Room, is downstairs and serves burgers and fries in a casual environment. That would have been as close to "fine dining" as this place. A more honest ad would say "A reasonably priced place and it's somewhat better than fast food". Again, I don't get the good reviews - but trust me, if you like "Fine dining" - this will disappoint.
Excellent dinner
Great restaurant in State College. The environment is very pleasant and cute. We were able to dine next to the window and you have a beautiful view of the park. The appetizer to share with the other guests was excellent and the other dishes we ate were also good. The service was very friendly and at the right times. Well done
Probably the Best Restaurant in State College
Another spectacular dinner at Allen Street Grill last night…our first dinner there last Saturday was so great we took the whole family for a graduation celebration again last night. Apps included the soft shelled crab, rare-seared yellowfin tuna, steak tartare and the grilled little gem salad. Or fantastic waiter Kip sold the salad hard and it exceeded expectations. I couldn’t try the soft shelled crab because of an allergy but all the other apps were delicious and we paired with a Domaine Deliance Cremant de Bourgogne, mainly to complement the tartare. Wonderful way to start the meal. For mains, I couldn’t resist the steak even though I had the same dish last Saturday. The sauce is indeed “liquid gold” as General Manager Becky called it. I literally can’t get enough of it. Not pictured is the chicken breast with tabbouleh salad and whipped feta as our son dug in and was nearly done before we finished the photo shoot. Our daughter enjoyed the heritage pork chop with goat cheese polenta, peas and roasted garlic jus. My wife had the wild Atlantic halibut with jersey corn, chorizo sausage ragout and heirloom tomatoes. All the dishes were very well-balanced and delicious. The wine I wanted for our mains was out of stock so bar manager Chris picked a winner that I don’t believe is on the menu yet. It had just arrived and we all tasted it together. Believe it was a Grenache Syrah blend. Nice price point and very tasty. No pics of dessert but we split two dishes: the torta caprese - almond cake, white chocolate mouse and rhubarb compote, and the sorbet and gelato tasting. Can’t wait to visit again soon. If anyone from Allen Street reads this, if you bottle that amazing malt sauce, I will buy it by the case. 😉
Ambiance meets culinary excellence
Fantastic dinner for two made possible by Montana who was tending bar while serving the window facing high tops. Burrata and English Pea Salad were our starters and per Montana's suggestion, they paired really well together. I had mediterraean cassoulet without the octopus and it was amazing. My partner had the halibut which was cooked perfectly (we're from Boston, this was outsstanding). Will def return when we are here!
