Extremely rude staff
Visited on a weekday morning. A male staff member was standing behind the counter. We asked for 2 bowls of kway teow. The arrogant man did not look up from whatever he was doing, ignoring us. We repeated our orders, and he just shook his head from side to side while still looking down before saying "don't have, don't have" in Mandarin. We decided to leave. We are not eating there no matter how delicious it is hyped to be.

Rude boss who demanded extra $1 for beehoon with noodles. Quality has dropped tremendously and not worthy of Michelin title. Gravy taste horrible and stale ngoh hiang without fish flakes. Prices definitely not worth $5 for a mini bowl in hawker centre.

Amoy Street has many great food for lunch and one of the well reviewed is this gem of a lor mee located on the second level. Stall doesn't looks like much but the first thing that will strike you is how spanking clean and organised it is for a hawker stall. Main ingredients are already laid out in full view, and given the current covid situation, vendor even recommends touchless and cashless electronic payments. Menu start from $4/$5/$6 and I believe the main difference is how much ingredients to go into your braised noodle bowl. Given current Singapore hawker rate, don't complain if you feel for $4 you don't get much ingredients. I asked for $6. And it is topped to the brim with the main four ingredients. Namely fried dough, braised pork belly, fish meat flakes, ngo hiang and fried meat balls. For a dollar more you could actually have your own mix. Today I went for a general mix. Instead of a sambal chilli, they offer red cut chilli, and no grated garlic either. Black vinegar and white pepper you may help yourself. What strikes me first tossing the noodles in the thick gooey signature broth is the aroma of braised soup, the light fragrance of five spices and when you slurp the al dente flat yellow noodles evenly coated, you can savour the light sweetness of the broth. Unlike many other famous lor mee, either too thick, or too heavy on spices, or worse, too watery, the consistency of the broth is key. As for the four ingredients, the fried dough, meatballs and ngo hiang left not much of an impression except some crunch. Though the braised pork belly was tasty and flavourful, and the fish flakes yummy, definitely not your farmed dory flakes but actual cooked sea fish flakes and you don't find that much in Lor Mee these days. Definitely coming back for more, but doing that add on choice of ingredients for only braised pork belly, fish flakes with the broth coated flat yellow noodles. Yummy Lor Mee heaven.

Just okay. Decided to try this as it has some fame, but the taste was okay, but nothing special. You can egg an onsen egg at an extra charge. The noodles were okay, and the ngoh hiang pieces were crispy, which was good.

This place I remember from my youth. I came back with a Singaporean friend. I said I wanted to eat somewhere that would remind me of the old Singapore of the 1960's. Yuan Chun totally achieved that. Delicious Singaporean food served in simple surroundings. I will be back sooner than the last time!
Be the first to ReplyNice Lor Mee at Amoy
I was told there is a famous lor mee at Amoy. 1st time i went to the wrong place as i thought it is on 1st floor, only then found that it is at 2nd floor. tasted not bad, there is a reason for it to survive for long.

The stall has been around since I was a kid and is still demanding a queue on a weekend since the stall is located in commercial area which is closed on weekend.
Despite the queue, you get your noodle self serviced style within 15 mins or so. Base price starts at $3 but with additional toppings you pay more, what I like is the additional ingredients that put into the noodle like the fish meat, what is missing is braised egg which you get in most lor mee. The gravy is not as sticky yet does not lack the taste.
Good to taste old school food once in a while...
Old School Food
The stall is located at the second floor of the hawker centre and has been around for a long time, occupying 2 stall spaces. Currently it is closed on thursday and friday. The minimum order starts from $4. Here it is self service style. One has to order and collect at the stall.
I had been eating at the stall since I was young. I felt that the serving was getting smaller while price had increased too. The amount of fish meat in the serving had reduced a lot. It used to be chunky fish overflowing. I like that the yellow noodle did not have the "Kee" taste. The dish still tasted not bad.
Best come during holiday when there is no office crowd. There will be no queue.
