Excellent Kaiseki
Quite simply the best and most authentic Japanese food and service we have experienced in the USA, out of numerous restaurants visited over many years. Food and service exemplary. It is so misleading that Trip Advisor’s algorithm results in a relatively low ranking, this surely ought to be among the top restaurants in Santa Barbara.
Be the first to ReplyThe Entertaining Japanese Kaiseki dinner experience
We’ve lived and traveled through Japan and only get to experience this rare Japanese style (Kaiseki) of set meal. The fact we found a Kaiseki restaurant right here in California is our amazing luck. Yoichi’s has delivered what we have experienced in Kyoto, Tokyo, and Hakuba Japan and almost never in the States. We’ve overheard other customers in the restaurant wanting to only order platters of sushi rolls, sashimi, and sushi not realizing the chef has carefully laid out a set meal is not about volume but a play on taste and visual plating to keep you engaged through the evening experience. It’s all about preparing courses that work and compliment each other, as well has pairing the saki to go with all the courses,. The menu changes almost every quarter based on season ingredients. The ceramic plating even matched with the courses, and turned out they were made by local potter. We wanted to take the dishes home with us. Here’s what stood out in out courses. 1. Appetizers - wagu beef melted in our mouths. Seared and rare in the center. This went well with the pickled and sweet daikon salad. 2. Chawanmushi (egg custard) - shrimp, mushroom, egg, with dashi infused, topped with salmon eggs marinated in mirin. Savory dish with sweet salmon eggs was a twist I’ve not had before. Very pleasant surprise. 3. Crab cake in a smokey dashi broth I thought was going to be my favorite until the next course arrived. We make dashi and we knew immediately they put extra bonito flakes into making the broth as smokey as possible. It was like a BBQ broth with crab. Just wonderful. 4. Sea bass on miso/kombo was the winner. Flakey meat plated on miso and blended kombo seaweed. I could eat this all day. 5. Dessert was citrus gel on top of a red bean paste and paired with yuzu cocktail. You have to try this out if you ever happened to be in Santa Barbara.

Let me start out by saying my husband and I are foodies and I never do reviews, butThis experience was so disappointing I wanted to encourage others to reconsider before wasting a perfectly good evening to experience wonderful Santa Barbara. Crab legs were over cooked, Uni probably was too as it was liquified. Sake was the best thing about this meal. The sushi did not seem fresh. Waygu beef is from Australia and tasted like poor quality meat.
Nothing really tasted great.
Kaiseki Heaven
From the minute you walk in the door you know the experience is going to be good. TOTALLY TRADITIONAL! OK, so the towels weren't hot but from thereon we got dish after dish of Kaiseki perfection. If you are unfamiliar, think tapas but Japanese. It is pre fixe.
Be the first to ReplyWe come to Santa Barbara because of this restaurant
We are from the Bay Area and we plan visits to Santa Barbara because of Yoichi’s. Food is always impeccable and service is great. Dining here reminds you that food is meant to be enjoyed slowly, savoring each ingredient and not in volume.

Yoichi’s - the restaurant initially came across as modest and quaint inside, however we were surprised to have one of our best meals here. Absolutely superb 7-course kaiseki meal, fantastic and friendly service with each dish meticulously prepared and explained!
The chef takes you on a real culinary journey and a number of dishes really stand out, such as the soup with rock fish, snow crab and the atma mackerel!
Just Like Japan
Really felt like I was in Japan eating at this place. We traveled to Japan in May 2019 and enjoyed many fine meals there. Dinner at Yoichi’s was on par with among our best meals in Japan. Service was excellent, the food was excellent, the Hokkaido king crab legs are to die for. Hard to get soup as delicious as they serve anywhere else in the US. Highly recommend this place for a Japanese kaiseki feast. $80 for 5 course meal included a very generous amount of melt in your mouth sashimi.
Be the first to ReplyA special dinner for discerning diners
This is a one of a kind place that serves kaiseki - 7 courses as beautiful to look at as delicious to eat. It is meant to be enjoyed at a leisurely pace (our meal was over 2 hours). It is not for those who expect fried tempura, teriyaki or rice. Sauces are delicate to complex, and grilled or simmered perfectly. Price was $125 per person and well worth it. The place is simple and casual, and for those who really enjoy Japanese cuisine.
Be the first to ReplySuperb Japanese Kaiseki
Wife and I loved our Kaiseki experience at Yoichi. Slow-paced. Authentic. Beautiful presentation and well-balanced. We upgraded our tasting menu to try more items, so glad we did. Love the vibe and atmosphere, feels like we’re in a Kyoto setting. SB should be grateful and proud of these sort of unique establishments without going to a metropolitan.

My daughter has been raving about the wonderful kaiseki dining at Yochi's. She took me last night and we had the seven-course dinner which consists of many small plates of the finest seafood, steak, and vegetables available. Many of the dishes have ingredients that are flown in from Japan and/or are locally sourced. Everything was of the highest quality and delicious. As several have said, you forget you're in Santa Barbara and feel more like you're in Kyoto. The service was superior. Each dish that was presented, in beautiful ceramics and glass dishware, was explained by the host. It took us almost two hours to complete all of the courses at a leisurely pace. I often stopped to just savor the flavors that were presented to me in each dish. There were cooked and raw (sashimi and sushi) courses. If you like Japanese food and want an authentic gourmet experience, this is a perfect place to dine. I will definitely go back.
Be the first to ReplyOne of the very best dining experiences you can have in SB. GO!
Kaiseki is a multi-course expression of a perfect Japanese meal. Six friends gathered for this 7-course dining experience with three kinds of sake and two kinds of Japanese beer.
Each course was lovingly prepared from the very freshest ingredients and presented with utmost care and grace.
Absolutely delicious. Outstanding service.
Recommended as one of the very finest dining experiences you can have in this perfect small city with so many good restaurants to choose from.
Like being in Tokyo
Sitting in Yoichi's eating first rate Japanese food, I could easily forget I was in Santa Barbara and not Tokyo. The quality of the food, presentation and ambience were about as authentic as it gets without flying half way around the world. Yes it's expensive, but the evening was so memorable, that price was not a concern at all. Santa Barbara is lucky to have Yoichi's as there are few restaurants anywhere in California with this quality and authenticity. If you want Japanese cuisine, this is the place!!
