The Best Dim Sim Over 30 Years, and The Most Expensive
With a connecting flight at SFO, I orchestrated an overnight stay so I could go to Yank Sing for breakfast (and meet some friends.) The dim sum here is the best, served by a staff on the rolling carts, connected with each other to make sure they can get you what you want. Eating here numerous times over a few decades (and most recently last month), the dishes have always been perfected and never disappointed. The Shanghai/soup dumpling is a constant wonder. I enjoyed five different shrimp-scallop-seafood entrees and loved them all. Downside: it's expensive. You can easily spend upwards of $30 a person. EASILY. But: can't wait to return.
Be the first to ReplyBeen going since the 70s and it has Not recovered prior cachet
This had been a family favorite since it was on Broadway near Stockton in the 70s and most the customers were local. Through the different moves first to Battery at Clay then alter to Stevenson and Rincon Annex (the two current locations). It was nice to see cart service resume, but the number of items is maybe half pre Wuhan. Its also a lot less busy and the patron demographic has definitely changed towards tourists. The items they still have on offer seem unchanged and quality is still good. Prices are very high. They have validated parking but the garage is often full, only monthlies, at lunch time on weekdays. Weekends easier. Street parking mostly requires commercial plates (yellow striped zone) or meters limited to 30 minutes. Stevenson location even tougher parking .

So disappointed. Very ordinary dim sum. I remember it being wonderful years ago. Now it is just touristy with not much variety. Service was fine.
Be the first to ReplyGood dim sum. Is this place in transition?
Good reliable dim sum, although some of it can be cold from being on the carts too long. We were there recently and there appear to be mostly tourists or gringos, not a lot of Chinese eating there. Seems to be a change from previous years. They are serving pretty much exclusively in the atrium, not in the restaurant which seems to be quieter and more like a staging area.

In the lovely Rincon Annex building, this upscale dim sum house is legendary. Both locals, like us, and tourists flock here for the well-prepared little dishes that make up a full delicious meal. The staff roll around the trolleys and offer a large variety, which you wash down with good tea. Pretty setting, perfect dim sum. Our favorite dim sum.
Be the first to ReplyIt is not what it used to be, sadly!
Iโve loved this place for years, having enjoyed many good meals there, but no more. There are still a few dishes that shine like the fried tofu (ordered from the staff rather than a cart), but all the steamed dishes there now, save a few exceptions, taste more or less the same. The dumplings which used to burst with flavor are now more gummy than tasty. The wait staff also seem less professional as does the service overall which was hit or miss, something that I have never experiences there before. There is also very little that is innovative or creative about the food which again was not the case. I think it is possible to have a decent meal there, but with so many other great dim sum restaurants in the bay area it visit, I canโt see any reason to go back. And itโs not exactly inexpensive! A sad day here!
Be the first to ReplyThe Be$t Dim $um Ever
This was one of many return visits to Yank Sing over the past 30+ years. YS has never disappointed in terms of food. Each dish that I have craved has always lived up to expectation, especially the Shangai (soup) dumplings and each shrimp-dominated item. YS remains the best in terms of dim sum quality and variety. What to complain about: you do have to wait for the carts to come by and that cart may not contain what you're looking for. OTOH, the cart pushers/waiters are all wired and they will summon another cart with the item you want. Yank Sing is expensive and will run about $30/person, or higher. Is it worth it? You bet. Will I return? Can't wait.

Extremely long wait and by the time we got in we had the only choice of ordering off the menu. Then there was a very limited selection and we were told that all our favorites were sold out! We parked below in the Ricon Center Parking and as we left a gang of young men came in and broke into a car a few spaces down from ours. What a terrible experience. I used to be a regular nd took all my guests there but NO more.
Be the first to ReplyNo longer what it used to be
Yank Sing used to be our favorite in San Francisco. Had not visited since covid. My mom who was visiting from out of town wanted to go there since she had very fond memories of our last visit. What a disappointment. The menu is down to one pice of paper, hardly any carts passing by, food ordered from the menu was terrible, service was not good. Will NOT return t all. Too bad and too sad......

We walk to this place to get branch as treat on BD trip to San Francisco. Is that was a meal or treat. Everything taste great and as we reserve a seat in advance we did not have to wait for. Service as was expected food was delivered before we could seat and everything was fresh and tasty. We will be back on next trip to SF
Be the first to ReplyIf you can't do Christmas right then just don't open on Christmas
Founded in 1958 with two locations Yang Sik remains family owned today, Vera Chan Waller and husband Nathan continuing a proud heritage began after Veraโs grandparents George and Alice Chan immigrated to San Francisco during the Communist Revolution. Moved around a bit across 60+ years, the location inside Rincon Center on Spring Street a flagship for locals and tourists since 1999, Christmas Day finds Yang Sik at overflow capacity with a somewhat truncated menu and service barely equipped to serve over a thousand guests. Normally offering cart-service Dim Sum amidst contemporary confines, the same signature Chili Pepper Sauce created in the 1940s available on every table, Lunch began from the first of several push-carts with traditional Siu Mai plus baked BBQ Pork Buns that are fluffy and full of Meat. Slow to refill Water or Tea, though the limited Holiday menu stays away from spicier selections, Lotus Leaves filled with Rice, Pork and Mushrooms have a lot to offer while Spring Rolls and fried Shrimp were each fairly bland. Ordering Noodles via QR Code, this and a few other items made fresh at premium prices, Taro Dumplings were crisp on the outside but undercooked at the center while Potstickers and $3.50 each Dan Tat are no better than those found in Chinatown at half the cost.
Be the first to ReplyAvoid. The Sing is dead, long live Palette and others.
Avoid. Using Covid as an excuse to provide average dim sum offerings and vastly reducing their menu - omitting many of the very dishes that made them once famous. Entirely overpriced for the unimaginative food that you can get for far less at many many SF Chinese eateries. Donโt need to go to Yank Sing for chicken satay, potstickers, and the like. Too bad. I was a frequent customer. No more.

Very delicious dim sum. We tried this place based on a recommendation and they did no disappoint. Quick service and great food. It is in the Michelin guide but despite some misinterpretations, this place did not earn a star as far as I know. Maybe they deserve one though,
Be the first to ReplyCarts, carts, carts!
Quintessential dim sum experience, with carts, in a cavernous space. The steamed dumplings were especially divine. So much to choose from, so go with a large group and enjoy!
Be the first to Replylovely dim dum, authenic vibes
the food was great, pork bao was sparse on meat, siew mai felt a little off-brand, but we had the lotus rice - fantastic, cheong fun with shrimp, also madly fresh and delicious. 10/10 will go back again.

The food was really good, but we were definitely overwhelmed by the choices and carts at first. Took a bit to get used to how it worked, and by then we were getting full! Still, worth the visit and yummy!
Be the first to ReplyStill good food but some rough spots
I was at this Yank Sing a few months ago and again yesterday. The reservation system is good and both times we were seated promptly. During the earlier visit, a waiter came over promptly and took our order for tea. (There are several kinds available.) This time we were only served water (without asking - I thought that wasn't allowed). I finally flagged down a waiter only to be told that the tea had to be ordered using my phone! The process was easy after scanning the QR code on the small menu laying on the table, but really? I was shocked by this. Considering the price for tea - which I don't begrudge them - it should be available by request. We chose the rest of our food from the circulating carts. We were quite happy with the food. Other than the tea incident, everything went smoothly. I'm only afraid that the next time I go, we will forced to be order food, and it will be delivered using robotic carts traveling to and from the kitchen.
Be the first to ReplyDonโt get takeout from them
Terrible takeout experience from here. Dropped my order off at the desk of my hotel with no contact. Finally discovered it 30 minutes later once food was cold. To make it worse: no sauce of any kind for our dumplings and no utensils or napkins either. For almost 200$ worth of dumplings, having them cold and sauce-less was so disappointing. Donโt waste your money on takeout from here. Iโm sure the food is good in person, but takeout should be up to par too.
Be the first to ReplySoo delicious
So delicious yes. Really among the best dumplings i tried in the world. First of all quality, then nicely shaped.the address to go, for a complete dim sum
Be the first to ReplyA shadow of the great restaurant it has been for 30 years- a great run
This has been my go to lunch restaurant every time I visit SF over the last 30 years This is my second visit in the last 9 months and though the most recent visit was better, Iโve been very disappointed in the quality and selection of the dim sum as well as the service. All good things must come to an end and it looks like Yank Singโs days of glory are over. It was great while it lasted for over 30 years!

Passing through San Francisco and meeting friends, we made reservations at Yank Sing for dim sum and left completely satisfied. Read on for details.
A San Francisco dim sum institution, and justifiably so, reservations are recommended. The table service was fast with hand held wireless devices replacing the tickets that used to sit on your table, getting stamped with every dish. The three of us went through about a dozen plates covering a variety of dumplings, potstickers and the not-to-be-missed Shanghai dumpling (a soup dumpling with the unique melange of flavors.) for dessert, we enjoyed a plate of bean curd dumpling encased in a sesame seed wrapperโฆ I am normally not a fan of dim sum desserts but this was pretty good.
The three of us agreed: the gym song was perfect, certainly the best that I have enjoyed with the downside being it is expensive for dim sum, averaging about $33 a person.
But, the next time I am in San Francisco looking for dim sum, you can find me here.
Pretty good food
The tables and chairs are basic, with plastic or paper cups, but the food was pretty good, and service was quick. They were religious about checking vaccine cards with ID. It is indoors, but in a large multistory atrium, so it almost felt safe.
Be the first to ReplyWell we had a great meal...
Some "not like it used to be" reviews cautioned us, but we hit the place and were very happy with the Dim Sum. Marginally expensive but with good service and actual Vaccination verification (Vaccine card and ID). Good for them. Soup Dumplings. Says it all. We were inside but the outside looked nice, too.
Be the first to ReplyStill worth a visit
Yes, things have changed โฆ but Dim Sum still very good. Tables moved into courtyard of Rincon center allowing diners the benefits from outdoor dining without the cold San Francisco breeze. We sampled 8 dishes from a wide variety of choices and all were full of flavor. The lack of tablecloths may take away the feeling of fine dining but I am there to enjoy the food. Hopefully next year we can sit inside but I will still go now to enjoy a fun lunch with family.
Be the first to ReplyOpening picture shows tablecloths - not on our visit - not the same!
We visited this Rincon Center location in the past and it has changed quite a bit since that time. The restaurant takes up pretty much the first floor of the building and the tables are spread out well for COVID. The ambiance is pretty industrial and cold so if it is atmosphere that you want, the other location on Stevenson is a better bet.
You have a choice to order off a bar code and they bring your food to you or you can order from the carts that come by โ we chose to order off of the carts. If what you want to order is not on the cart at your table they call the proper cart to come to your table. We started with the Har Gow (shrimp dumpling) and Sui Mai (Pork and shrimp dumpling) both of which were delicious and tender โ some of the better dim sum I have had. Not pictured is the mushroom dumpling โ this was the best of the dumplings that we ordered. Next we chose the fried spring rolls โ you get 4 rolls to an order. The first two rolls were crisp and hot and since it was not warm in the restaurant, the remaining rolls were swimming in grease.
Paying was a breeze โ you can just pay with your smart phone online at the table. They have an area that is dedicated for โto goโ orders. This is a good place for a casual lunch and they are pretty fast at getting your food โ takes a while to flag someone down to bring water though. This is not a place where you get pampered it's pretty bare bones service. The opening picture shows a more formal setting with white tablecloths - not on my visit!!
