Yamashiro Hollywood Los Angeles Reviews
This is my 6th time visiting Yamashiro.
The main reasons why I keep going back are the spectacular views I get when I sit at one of the high top tables, the excellent service I receive on every single visit, and the high-quality food that Yamashiro offers. My recent experience was made even more memorable due to my server, Jordy, who went above and beyond to make me feel welcomed. This is by far the best restaurant in Los Angeles, so I am excited for my 7th visit. If you are in Los Angeles and you are looking to sit down at an amazing restaurant with a breathtaking view, you should check out Yamashiro. Trust me, it is worth it.
Ambiance is really cool and interesting.
We were sat at the high tables outside looking out to the view, but wanted to change seats because of how uncomfortable and high it was. Plus there was an umbrella too close to my friend's head that was obstructing the views on the opposite side. So that was annoying. We decided to move inside.. but I didn't really enjoy it because there was a smell of mildew..the furniture, menu, table felt a bit dirty and sticky. The food was okay. The first dish we ordered came out fast literally in about a minute after we ordered it. which I already knew it wasn't so fresh as they just brought it out the refrigerator (the plate was cold and the sashimi was stuck together) .. We also ordered the miso soup which came out lukewarm warm, not as fresh either. We ordered the grilled broccoli with cheese. That wasn't so great. The charred broccoli did not mesh well with the cheese sauce. It did not taste good. I suggest they take that off the menu, or at least just make it grilled broccoli alone. Overall the vibes were cool but the food wasn't.
Magnificent location in the hills with a spectacular view
Magnificent location in the hills with a spectacular view of the city. Wow stunning doesn't begin to describe the vibe. We got there right before sunset so got a breathtaking view from a Birds Eye point. If you plan to dine up here make sure you get there 15 minutes earlier to walk around the garden in the front. There are also multiple seating options from outdoor under the garden lights, indoor and also table around a small garden indoors. So amazing guys you have to visit. The food on the other hand was ok. Nothing spectacular but still decent. Here's what we tried 1. Yellowtail Serrano: yellowtail sashimi with ponzu and a kick of spice. 2. Toro sushi: buttery delicious. Recommend. 3. Yamashiro roll: tuna/salmon/yellowtail roll with avocado and Serrano spice flavored with spicy mayo and eel sauce. Garnished with crispy onions. Roll was goods 4. Steak Garlic noodle: yakisoba noodles with bean sprouts and crispy garlic seasoned with oyster sauce. Of concourse can't forget the tenderloin pieces. Garlic noodles is a must anywhere. 5, Mixed mushrooms to add some veggies. 6. Kyoto spritz: gin with honeydew melon flavor topped with prosecco. Light and fresh. Fantastic. A definite must! Overall phenomenal experience. If you have guests and want to show the city this is the place. Unbearable location. Definitely going back again to soak in the view and try more of their dish.
Just celebrated my Daughter and my Son's 20th birthday this
Just celebrated my Daughter and my Son's 20th birthday this past weekend at Yamashiro! We had the most amazing time! TJ and KC were both so accommodating! TJ and his junior server were exceptional and I cannot thank TJ enough for making my kids' birthday celebration so extra special! Thank you again to the team at Yamashiro!
Great first night in LA
Fab experience with running views. Tasty cocktails and really attentive service. We had a great table overlooking downtown LA, great way to start our holiday!
Wife and I were really looking forward to dining here for
Wife and I were really looking forward to dining here for the first time on her birthday tonight. As soon as we arrived, we went to check in. Requested outside seating (it's a regular wednesday night). Hostess told us for outside seating it is going to be an hour wait. Initially we said no thank you, but the outside of the restaurant was nice and the views were spectacular. I then went back and said it's okay we don't mind waiting and checking the place out while we wait, and asked if we'll get a text when it's time. Hostess said my phone number won't get text messages and on their end it shows I'm not getting their messages, even though I received & replied to a confirmation text prior to our reservation. What?? They said they'll find us. Ok, no big deal. We walked around, took some pictures, sat on the outside benches they have (beautiful views). Decided to check in again to make sure we didn't miss our turn after 30 minutes. They said they'd been looking for us and it's our turn. Didn't see anybody looking but no problem, it's a big place. We sit down outside, waitress approaches us, we ask for waters & soda. 5 minutes later, somebody else brings spicy edemame to our table. We were confused at first, thinking it may be for another table. Didn't touch it for a bit while we looked through the menu, then thought it might be complimentary as it is our first time here. Ate a few while waiting for our water. Then another dude brings a roll of sushi. We're like okay something is wrong. We said we didn't order that. He had the tables mixed up. At this time we asked the waitress (happened to be near us) about the edemame we got earlier. She said it was a mix up but won't put it on our tab. Another 10 minutes goes by. No water. Another guy comes with ANOTHER sushi to our table and we told him we hadn't even ordered yet. At this point we're confused. It's been over 20 minutes since we asked for water and it comes. At this time while looking at what to eat, a photographer affiliated with the restaurant asks to take a few pictures of us. We agreed. Took some pictures, and I asked if i can see and how much would they be. She said "oh purchasing is optional but they'll tell you in the end". Okay....... We ordered a few specialty sushi rolls, sashimi, calamari etc. Food was not bad, but for a fine dining restaurant was a 7/10 at best. To each their own. As we were almost done and full, about to ask for a box for leftover sushi, our order of fries comes. An appetizer we ordered and forgot about since we already had dinner. Come on. Bill comes, while paying with the waitress, her credit card machine doesn't work. Has to get another one. We pay the bill, nobody mentions the photos that were taken earlier of us, if we can purchase or have, nothing. Overall, views are amazing. Outside layout of the restaurant is beautiful. But for a fine dining restaurant, didn't seem as though everybody is dialed in. We paid about $300 for a dinner for 2, WITHOUT alcohol. It isn't even about the money, but we also don't fine dine every night. We chose this establishment for a special occasion and were let down. Not sure we'll return.
Great views.
Food was amazing and our server, Mike, was wonderful. Every recommendation he gave us was right on point. Can't wait to come back.
What an amazing location! Never would have guessed that
What an amazing location! Never would have guessed that this restaurant was here! We were seated immediately at a corner table with amazing views! We had a variety of sushi and all was delicious! Our waiter was attentive and accommodating! We strolled the grounds after dinner and we were able to sit outside and enjoy the views! A great date night location for sure!
My boyfriend and I were so excited to experience this
My boyfriend and I were so excited to experience this restaurant for our very special anniversary date. Our excitement was quickly tainted. Our Server was not welcoming, acted too good to be serving us. I told my bf to only order 1 plate because I did not want to give more money to a rude establishment. I'm annoyed at how good the food was, only reason they even get a star. Chef is really saving them. Our plates got cleared and table being prepped for Dessert. No menu was offered. But this dirty rag towel was left on our table for about 20 minutes. A dessert menu was offered when the dirty towel came to be picked up. I was so over it. We declined trying any dessert. I had really high expectations for this place and it sadly left us super disappointed. Do better.
If I could give this zero stars I would.
PLEASE READ THIS REVIEW IF YOU ARE CONSIDERING GOING HERE. On August 14th, around 8:40pm me and my fiancรฉ were sat. Everything was fine, we were extremely excited to celebrate a birthday. However, there was multiple MAGGOTS FOUND IN MY SALAD. You DO NOT understand the level of disgust we felt, and how much I wanted to cry. The server noticed we were flashing the light in our food, and quickly took it away before I was able to take any video proof. I am BEYOND disappointed in my experience here. And I really really want to warn everyone else out there. The manager did not seem surprised by this and just offered to make a new one. Of course we declined that and just left. I also debated whether or not to make a review because most of the time things like this never get resolved and we weren't able to get proof. I would really love for some accountability to take place, and I feel so sorry for anyone else who had to experience this or mistakenly eat MAGGOTS without realizing. I will reach out to the health department to also see what can be done.
Bailey was our waitress and let me say she was Great !
Bailey was our waitress and let me say she was Great ! Great attitude, made us feel at home . Food was delicious as well as the Drinks the bartender makes a kick as sour whiskey and old fashioned.
Very Professional
Yamashiro is committed to customer service, and the food is spectacular. My daughter loves it. She recently chose it for her birthday. highly recommended
Event
I requested a birthday cake for my wife, and the waiter brought out a very small portion of cheesecake with a tiny candle on top. Meanwhile, another guest celebrating an event received a much larger, nicer cake. When a customer clearly mentions multiple times that the cake is important and that the dinner is meant to celebrate a special occasion, the staff should take that request seriously. Even if the cake comes with an extra charge, most people celebrating a meaningful event wonโt mindโitโs about making the moment memorable. The Caesar salad was made with kale and was overly salty. The other dishes were average. However, the view is spectacular and makes it worth visiting the restaurant at least once.
Our favorite place in the whole world
Weโre regulars here and I canโt imagine loving another place than this. Yamashiro has become a staple in our family and we come here at least once a month. From the moment you pull up, the valet is extremely friendly and careful, the reception staff is equally welcoming but the real magic comes when you are seated. The amazing waiters and waitresses know the menu and recommend the absolute most perfect dishes for you. To top it all off, the manager, Casey, will have you leaving feeling like family. This place is the epitome of a customer service in every sense of the word.
Super Cool, Super Historic, Super Expensive
This used to be our spot for some sushi and drinks before descending down the hill to party in Hollywood, but the prices have just gone insane. Still, if you can afford it, or budget for just some drinks and/or appetizers, it's well worth checking out the garden and enjoying the experience. Check out the history online before you go to make the most out of your visit. - In 2012 the Yamashiro Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places. including "nine contributing buildings, sites, and structures on the estate property."
Not worth
Fast Food - nice view - but no good Japanese food - no wine service - unfriendly reception - unfriendly bar - cheap tasting cocktails - itโs just a tourist nap place - really a shame!
Great views
We returned after a few years The views are still amazing and some good people watching too. The food was good if not as amazing as I remember for the cost - the sushi being less flavourful for instance and the cocktails not as curated nor tasty - one was distinctly green and heavy handed syrups - worth it for the view vs the food now
Thieves!
The mandatory valet stole my portable charger and charging cable. Pretty upset about it. Came here with my bf to celebrate our anniversary and when we got home we realize that our charger was stolen. I know it was stolen because i never took it into the restaurant and left it in the car. How rude, so much for a "nice" restaurant. Can't even trust the employees there.
Overlooking hollywood
Yamashiro, perched atop Hollywood, offers stunning views and delectable Asian cuisine. Their sushi boat, a standout dish, combines fresh ingredients with expert craftsmanship, delivering a culinary experience that's both visually impressive and deliciously satisfying. Perfect for a memorable dining experience with a breathtaking backdrop of the Hollywood skyline.
Yummy sushi and amazing views!! Definitely book your table
Yummy sushi and amazing views!! Definitely book your table a couple weeks in advance!! Outdoor seating has heaters so it's still warm outside
The Food was good , I got the Spicy tuna crispy roll and it
The Food was good , I got the Spicy tuna crispy roll and it was a solid 7/10 . Better than most dishes. The service was bad . We were a party of 18 , and 2 drinks did not get into our table until we were all done and we told the server we never got them and he told us "well I rang the drinks in so somebody's going to end up paying for them" when we never got them to begin with. Gratuity was automatic so maybe this is why he was giving us such bad service ? If he didn't want to help us , I know another server would have gladly taken us. Never checked or asked if anything was okay.maybe he has some stuff going on in his life.
a hollywood treasure.
always have wanted to go here, luckily had something to celebrate so i went here lol. the building's interior and exterior are meticulously designed. i just went to japan a few months ago and i felt like i was right back in kyoto. old world japan feel. 100 years old. the food was ok, favorite thing was the yamashiro roll and the garlic steak noodles. do not get the agedashi tofu or tempura! just not that remarkable. i don't drink alcohol and was sad they didn't have like soda or mocktails, at least from what i could see on the menu. the views of the la basin were spec-tacular. i will never forget my experience here.
Last night was very monumental.
We celebrated my nieces 40th birthday at Yamashiro and the experience was beyond amazing! For starters, the cocktails were a great lead into an even more exceptional meal. Next onto the appetizers that were both mouth watering and filling. On to the main courses that left each member of the party with way more than just smile, but an overall warm feeling of satisfaction. Finally, the amazing staff delivered an exceptional dessert platter known as what I believe their boat of desserts. In addition, they saying happy birthday on tune to my niece and it just brought somebody smiles to her face. Giovanni and the rest of the staff/team went above the call of duty, the ensure that it was a special celebration for my wonderful niece. I want to personally thank the staff for taking, great care of us. We will definitely be back!

average sushi, unclean cutlery and glasses (We had lipstick on a cup, none of us wore lipstick.) beautiful scenery and ambiance, but subpar experience overall. We suspected there was mold in the large glass bottle of water, but they promised it was coffee grinds from espresso martini's? Despite the possibility of that, either way, it still meant the glass wasn't washed properly at the bare minimum.Matcha green tea was horrible, not earthy or subtly sweet, color was off too, more similar to a glass of water from the Los Angeles river, Increasingly similar to the taste of really dirty dishwater. Steak garlic noodles weren't bad. The servers were nice enough and understanding though. Really wish I could've had a better experience here, the view, architecture and nice staff is really the only reason it has two stars instead of one.
Still nothing from the restaurant.
They really said fuck my stolen stuff. I'll just keep posting until they finally respond back to me.
Yamashiro responded to my earlier review and offered a nice
Yamashiro responded to my earlier review and offered a nice discount to come back and give them a second try after the issues I had with one of their dishes. Last time we went, the experience was spoiled by the Beef Ragu Udon dish. Getting the dish again at no cost was part of the offer Yamashiro offered me, and they did not dissapoint. I'm unsure if they reworked the dish or I just got it on an off night last time, but wow it was SO GOOD this time. This time we decided to dine a litte early while there was still light out, and I definitally recommend that as the view was better. I am changing my review to a five star with the only caveat being that it is expensive, but that's expected for such a nice location in hollywood.
I haven't been since 2018 but I can never stop thinking
I haven't been since 2018 but I can never stop thinking about their red dragon roll! I wasn't a sushi person until I tried that. I now love sushi.
Let me start with saying, the food was delicious.
Each and everything we ordered was great quality and tasted great, and it should've been a perfect experience, although it wasn't. Our server was MIA the entire night. We were sat, he checked in once, where we ordered appetizers and he said he would come back to collect our drink orders, and we did not see him for another 20 minutes. The appetizers were completed before we could flag him down to finally put in an order for a bottle of wine... After the wine arrived, it was another 30 minutes before he came back and rudely asked if we were going to order dinner, as if we hadn't been waiting for him to check back in on us, we always were ready to order when he was at our table because we knew if we weren't we wouldn't see him for a long while. Although I will say runners bringing the food were always helpful and once the food was ordered it did arrive in a timely manner. Though the food was good, I would not recommend coming to this restaurant again, the service was off putting. Theres better sushi elsewhere, where you will receive appropriate service for whats expects at a $100.00 per person meal..
Nice ambiance been here a few times for family birthday
Nice ambiance been here a few times for family birthday dinners the food is fresh and delicious a bit on the expensive side but well worth it. Servers are always on top of everything. Most beautiful views they also have a hookah lounge. Will definitely be back. Good memories

I was there for shisha, not bad) service is good, but in lounge they don't have a food, only drinks and shisha. View is good
I took a photo of the best part of this restaurant.
Notice there's no food pictures. The atmosphere is great but the service and food was average at best. Definitely not worth the money you pay for it all. If you like good food and friendly service this isn't the place for you. Long story short this place is overrated.
Great food.
Super cool view of Los Angeles and ambiance is great. No complaints on the service. It was great.
Yamashiro is an experience.
Food is good but not something to boast about. People go for the experience, views and service. NOT the food. I love how they have heaters at every table. I forgot my coat as it was cold that day. I didn't have to worry about that. Service is very attentive and i appreciate that. Drinks however are VERY inconsistent. I ordered 3 cosmos and they all tasted very different. The bar in the front was the best one. The bar inside however... i know yall are busy but we sat at the bar and waited a while for someone to acknowledge us. They have a lounge but its reservations only.
Came here for my husband's birthday who is really into
Came here for my husband's birthday who is really into Japanese bonsai and gardening so figured this would be the perfect location to go for the atmosphere. Came early to enjoy the sunset and have a drink and walk around the gardens. Then was seated in the internal garden and Koi pond, which was absolutely beautiful. Our server was super friendly and our food was very delicious. I'm saddened to hear about the mediocre reviews but we had an absolutely fabulous time and would definitely recommend for a special occasion. I especially recommend being seated in the internal garden which is more unique. I personally think it's prettier than the LA city view which you can kinda get anywhere.
Beautiful location with gardens and water features.
We were only there for cocktails but we enjoyed the ambience. Next time we're in LA, we're going to try to get in for dinner.
Great ambience.
Good place to go in big group or a date. They also have a hookah, music at the bottom of the stairs. Fun vibe!
This is a must! First of all I appreciate the valet parking
This is a must! First of all I appreciate the valet parking since space on grounds is limited, so they take care of that for you. And all the waitstaff and servers were all so friendly and personable. The grounds are incredible. Fantastic views of LA, and they have a Japanese garden on the property. Lastly the food was so delicious! I like how they bring items out as they're ready. I recommend getting some appetizers to share; but do your best to order your appetizers and main dishes at the same time. That way nobody feels like they have to wait to eat as they wait for other orders to come out.
What can you say.
It's an experience. The place, the grounds, the view just gorgeous... a super highlight for any visitor to LA. From up there everything is just perfect. Great Romantic spot too. Servers... we had Joey, who was fantastic, very accommodating even with a few little bumps. Everything was yummy...... standouts.. Brussels Sprouts, for fans..delish a bit on the sweet side which is a balsamic sweet. The star was the Short Ribs, we shared it, though it's an ample helping for a solo....just amazing, about as good as they get anywhere. Steak Garlic Noodles were really good & the Crab Fried Rice was ok with an average amount of crab, but ok, not in the class of the others. Valet Parking update... currently about $15. there is no service charge on the bill as other places remarked. If you can come at sunset so you can see the view with the sun's light & then the sparkling lights of the city. Grab a drink at first & walk the grounds for a bit, visit the Buddah & enjoy the gardens.. This place is a treasure.
Yamashiro has such a cozy and welcoming ambiance.
The outside is beautiful in the afternoon as well as at night time. The food was flavorful and executed well, but the presentation was not standard. Our server was very attentive, and managers walked around to ensure customers were cared for. - Potato salad: generous serving provided; the apples went well with the overall flavor of the potato salad. - House salad: a variety of fresh greens topped with a delectable dressing sauce. - Pork bao buns: the bun was cooked perfectly, but the pork was very soft for my liking; the added veggies went well with the dish. - Brussels sprouts: cooked just right, not soggy or hard texture, but could use a bit more flavor. - Ribeye: lacked presentation but was very soft and highly seasoned. - Steak diane: miso steak sauce complimented the steak very well. - Brownie dessert: brownie was not overwhelmingly sweet, topped with ice cream that balances out the caramel coat at the bottom of the brownie.
Great place.
Superb view and very interesting grounds with the hookah lounge etc. crispy rice was great!
The best part was the view the food is bland it look's
The best part was the view the food is bland it look's definitely better than what it taste like
As Good as The Last Time
Excellent Restaurant, visited here a few years ago when in LA and this time was with my son so decided to book again. Certainly, did not disappoint. Food was excellent as was the Service. Fantastic Views of LA from Hollywood Hills.
HORRIBLE FOOD
The worst sushi in L.A. Drinks are amazing the food is tourist trap prices with low quality. AVOID AT ALL COST.
Listen to the many negative reviews and give it a miss
Too many people saying the same thing: Haphazard food delivery โ donโt expect to eat as a family its each man for themselves here if you mix hot and cold dishes. Waited for our table for 20 mins at the bar โ couldnโt get servedโฆ Waited 30 mins for a glass of wine after being seated. Impersonal, cold, sparse and slow service but still the max tip request. Hugely expensive for mediocre dishes โ the sushi was praised by my family though. You are just a cog in the machine and they donโt seem to cope or care. They did refund my main meal that came 10 mins before my familyโs so got cold and then got reheated and then arrived back after they finished. Well done! Iโd had enough of them by then and just wanted to go so we didnโt order desert. All in all a huge costly disappointment โ but yes the view and gardens are nice. Maybe take a picnic and save $300!
Great views Terrible service
Went to this restaurant for my sons 21st birthday whilst in LA, first they brought over his starter which he finished on his own then my main course half way through my main they brought out my starter then his side dish after 20min he got his main course, when I complained they told me the dishes are served in no particular order, what a joke!!!!! In all the years that I have dined in restaurants I have never experienced this. Food was mediocre, when I asked for the bill they had the audacity to ask me if I wanted to leave a tip, needless to say I respectfully declined. There are much nicer restaurants in LA, donโt waste your money in this one.
Unforgettable place
The place is unforgettable. Not only does it have a spectacular view of Los Angeles, the gardens are beautiful, the lighting is very special. I recommend going at night, and the food is delicious.
BDay dinner
Worth th experience. Service/ staff was awesome, very attentive n helpful. Food was good. View was amazing. Very nice for a special occasion
Especially the view
Restaurant which is especially worth it for the view and the setting. The view is fabulous. It's wow! The food is good. Toro sushi hmmm a treat! Not a bad choice too. Something to please everyone. Where the bottom hurts is the rest. Already paying for parking to go to the restaurant... uh? In addition with valet, while the cars are parked 2m away. Oh well. Then the restaurant wants to be upscale. The prices are, but not the details. The chopsticks are single use like in any sushi shop down the street. The presentations are not always elaborate and the containers are not always suitable (for the Banana Split tempura: the cup wobbles on the plate). We had a great time but considering the price a little more attention to detail would enhance the experience.
Fantastic location
Some friends who live in California took us to this place. We booked a table outside for 6pm and were able to enjoy the fantastic view of Los Angeles from the very first lights of the evening to enjoying the city lit up in the dark. Breath-taking view. Very well-kept environment inside too, with a Japanese garden. Historic structure, attentive service. Average food for a good Japanese restaurant. Excellent drinks. Perfect if you're not looking for a cheap place.
Memorable experience
Itโs a beautiful experience and everyone should go at least once. The view is stunning, the food is great. Strangely the wait for a table was long even on a weeknight even though we had a reservation and we werenโt the only ones. It was stranger because there were some empty tables. My guess is that there were less serving staff. Ask for recommendations if youโre not sure what to order. We loved the sashimi, dragon roll and yes they have kid options too though itโs not listed on the menu.
