Lovely food let down by incompetent service
Nice food if not amazing, service is laughable We visited here on a Monday evening. The restaurant was quiet with around four tables of customers. 2 of us had the sampling menu, my wife vegetarian ate a la carte. food was good is not amazing, I think the tasting menu is pretty good value at €60 for 6 course inc desert. The food was good and we all enjoyed it. Some very good dishes. However, the service is a joke. Restaurant not busy, our waiter very friendly but appeared to have no experience. Perhaps this was his first night and he stumbled in off the street looking for work? Ill detail - order taken but the waiter took an extraordinary amount of time writing our order in longhand in what appeared to be an essay. How much writing is wine -Pago, coke. Agua con gas? We then waited 30 mins for anything to arrive at the table. I prompted for the wine which then came with the first course. No nibbles, pre-dinner snacks, bread etc were offered. My sons coke appeared after I promoted again. The waiter was puzzled how to open the wine then poured it holding the bottle with both hands. New courses arrived with no new cutlery. The waiter seemed to wander around making multiple journeys to and from tables with no efficiency. The place needs a kick up the behind for the dining experince to match expectation. Just the basics of service wouldn’t go amiss, the standards we experienced distracted from the tasty well-presented dishes.

Was quite disappointed with Xarma. The food was over seasoned and bland, the service mediocre at a very high price. Altogether an underwhelming experience. So many other brilliant places to San Sebastián - don’t waste a meal here.

We really enjoyed our meal here. Our waitress was really helpful and made sure to check the dishes with the chefs to ensure none contained dairy (which I can’t eat). We didn’t do the tasting menu but instead opted for some shared starters and individual mains. We loved the flavours in the Wakamole and my hake main was so delicious. There were several complimentary flavours and it was a dish I’d never be able to make for myself - which is something I love about eating out. We also enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere and that they created a mini main for our 3 year old (who also really enjoyed it!)

Pretty much agree with the mixed reviews on TA. We had the 60 euro tasting menu and had some very good food but service, food temp issues, and restaurant temp issues lowered to 3* overall. Some of the food that shouldve been hot was room temp. Chicken was tasty but undercooked. It is a basement restaurant and was cool when we arrived but was sweltering by the end of the night and we were all sweating. Not an enjoyable experience to have to fight that. We mentioned to the waitstaff but they acted like they didnt hear us. Overall service was rough even compared to lesser casual cafes. Take away the hot room and mediocre service and food gets 4* because not hitting on all cylinders

We were one group of several, different couples that arrived at the same time for our reservation when the restaurant opened. Upon arrival the staff at the bar were busy talking to some regulars and ignored us. When we attempted to go downstairs to the restaurant we were told to wait and told "We opened 5 minutes ago, you have to wait". If you are not ready for your guests when you open then why open? I know we are in Donostia and time is fluid but for a Michelin guide restaurant you expect more professionalism. A few minutes later we were taken downstairs to the restaurant and offered a choice of tables. We chose to have a selection of dishes from the menu though it was unclear until we asked our server what the size of the dishes were (Spanish style, small plates, large plates etc.) and what was suitable to share etc. It was a bit confusing more us unfortunately. We were recommended a wine to go with our meal which was okay. The food was good but not great - my steak was badly cooked but I was offered 50% off the bill for it - I appreciated this. Presentation was excellent. Some of the other dishes were quite enjoyable but overall we found that the quality varied a lot between dishes. I am unsure why this is a Michelin guide restaurant. The staff downstairs were nice and enthusiastic so I wasn't massively disappointed with the experience but I feel that for the price it could have been better overall.

My husband and I are visiting San Sebastián on our honeymoon and had heard good things about Xarma, and we weren’t disappointed! Located right near Gros beach, the downstairs part is intimate and quiet, perfect for a romantic dinner. My husband and I got the tasting menu as well as the hake, paired with a bottle of white wine. The tasting menu was exciting and innovative, and our waitress took the time to explain each dish to us, you could tell the amount of pride and care that was put into the presentation of each dish. The sushi was our favorite-pickled peppers and roe gave it a complex briney flavor. The Hake was cooked to perfection- flaky and light with a crispy outside and paired great with the accompanying sauce. Everything was well presented and delicious! Would definitely recommend.
