A East Village Find
This modern Vietnamese restaurant is a fine. The chicken salad, green papaya salad, banh it ram, shrimp and port tapioca dumplings, shaking lamb and turmeric skate were all very good. Service was fine too.

I have been here 2x, both times with groups and have sampled many of the dishes. Every dish has been outstanding and some have been exceptional. Some of them I can't believe are as cheap as they are when they raise to the quality of dishes I pay 40-50 for in other fine restaurants. The cocktails are also delicious and refined. The best way to experience the restaurant is to share a selection of the small medium and large plates. Not necessarily ideal if you are vegan or vegetarian as your options are limited. Sometimes the entrees may not all come out together as it's a very small restaurant but everything will be excellent quality.

This is one of the best meals I can remember. We shared the griddle cakes appetizer and two mains (the bronzino and the shaking beef). All were very favorable (but almost too pretty to eat,). Our tapioca desert had a little less verve than the other dishes.
Lovely staff and comfortable understated decor. My husband and I had dinner in the smaller dining room looking onto 4th Street, but the larger one downstairs looked very cozy. Weโll be back
What a find! Creative, memorable Vietnamese cuisine on a quiet East Village street.
Our daughter, a long time East Village resident, asked us to take her to Van Da for her birthday. Friends had raved about it ... with good reason! Its talented Vietnamese chef served us unique and thoroughly delicious dishes inspired by the cuisines of Hanoi, Hue and Saigon. She personally served us and explained her delicate Bahn Beo appetizer, which had quite a kick to it and was followed by wonderful little โgriddleโ cakes and a cauliflower side. Our entrees of Bronzino and Shaking Beef were superb and presented beautifully, while the chocolate and tapioca deserts complemented each other nicely. Service was excellent. We ate in the spacious simply furnished modern dining room downstairs. Itโs a short walk from the F-Trainโs Second Avenue station and probably a good idea to reserve a table ahead of time.

Read a review in the New Yorker about this new restaurant in East Village - modern Vietnamese fine dining definitely sounded like an interesting concept - so had to make sure that we try it on this visit to NY. Got there about 6 pm with a reservation - didn't look that full but by 7 pm it was packed. The exterior was very low key - with a glass front but no visible sign so not very noticeable unless you are looking for it. It's bigger than I thought - although not suitable for large groups, with a minimalist bright upstairs section with small bar and a dimly lit, more intimate feeling slightly larger downstairs section. Spacing is not bad at all for a NY restaurant, however maybe better downstairs.
They have a tasting menu for $45pp but everyone at the table will have to participate. Since there were 4 of us it made more sense (and less expensive) to just order a la crate to get a comparable sampling of the dishes. The presentation was exquisite, and the pacing perfect - the dishes came one at a time, unhurried but without delay. My favorites were the Banh Beo - rice cakes, (comes in 4s so great for sharing), stir fried pho noodle, grilled head-on prawns (comes in 3 pieces but you can add as needed - $4 per additional piece - which we did) and pork ribs. The chicken salad was uniformly agreed as the least interesting dish (with more chicken skin than chicken meat and lots of cabbage), but overall everything was good - no bad dishes, just some more tasty than others. The warm taro sago was just the perfect dessert to finish the meal. All this deliciousness comes at a relatively high price - our 4 entrees, three apps, dessert plus 5 drinks came to $48 pp before tip. But the food is definitely worth the splurge and a perfect venue for special occasions.
Fabulous!!
We went out for a coupleโs special night out. We were not disappointed!! Great environment, wait staff & most of all the food was sensational. Canโt recommend enough- just go!

We had the tasting menu. Wow. Everything we chose was perfect (steak tartar, grilled cheese, ribs and shrimp which were very messy). Weโve been to Vietnam and love the flavours so we were very happy with Van Da. We sat upstairs which had a great vibe and bar.
