Service was MIA
It’s unfortunate that poor service will ruin your experience. The restaurant was less than half full in our section, and other tables were getting good service. We had to ask for our drinks and even for the soy sauce! In a Japanese restaurant!! The plates came out so quickly that we had to pile the uncollected ones on top of each other, and request they be removed. The waiter clearly didn’t care about us, or doing his job. As we were leaving the hostess asked us about our dining experience, when I said less than ideal, she asked if I wanted to talk with the manager. At this time all we wanted to do was leave. Over priced food and poor service… the worst two things in a restaurant. Would not return or recommend.

Elegant interior, excellent staff who were friendly and generous with their knowledge. The Ngiri was our favourite closely followed by dessert.
Be the first to ReplyA bit overrated
After wanting to try Uni for years, I was a bit disappointed and underwhelmed. When ordering, I would stick with the items “from the kitchen”. The chicken bahn mi was very good as were the wagyu dumplings, but there is nothing really special about the sushi that you couldn’t just get at your local sushi joint and the prices are unnecessarily excessive. Atmosphere is very noisy and tables are rather close together so it’s not really romantic inside. It was nice to try but I wouldn’t go back.
Be the first to ReplyFabulous good, but way too noisy…
Fabulous food. One could almost just point to anything on the menu and do very well. Everything was delicious, beautifully presented . An exceptional team service effort. But I agree with the prior rating. The noise is overwhelming, almost to the point of getting up and leaving. Much more than a “lively vibe”. Tone it down with some ceiling baffles!
Be the first to ReplyJapanese Tapas
Japanese tapas! A great idea and the food was DIFFERENT and delicious. We took photographs of every dish! One problem, which could be easily fixed, is the noise level. We couldn't hear each other (we were 4) or the waitress, so we resorted to pointing at the 1-page menu, hoping that her eyesight was perfect. So much for asking questions about the forthcoming food! Really, guys, fix the noise problem. When we left and returned to the sidewalk outside, we all sighed in relief since it was quieter. Our guest was visiting from Australia and she had storied to tell - but we didn't hear them!
Be the first to ReplyGood service, very disappointing food.
Service was good, but the food was disappointing and underwhelming. More traditional dishes are done well enough, but the unique fusion / Pan-Asian dishes were very hit-or-miss. Many of these dishes combine flavors that don’t mix together well, or have unique ingredients or other components that are completely hidden by overpowering flavor combinations or spices. The crab fried rice, for example, is very tasty, but you would never know that crab was in it if you weren’t told, as the taste and texture of the crab is completely hidden by the others ingredients and flavors of the dish. For what you pay, much better sushi/Japanese/Asian cuisine can be found nearby.
Be the first to ReplyGreat restaurant. Air conditioning a joke.
Excellent restaurant. Air conditioning when 8 degrees outside. A joke! The environment? Cop on! Turn it off! No regard for the environment. I asked the staff to turn it off. They didn’t.
Be the first to ReplyUni Contines to Wow and Delight!!!
I don't know how everyone doesnt give this five stars. Maybe some people are expecting traditional sushi and this is not the place for that. Uni amazes with delicious and distinctive flavors time and again. But be prepared: Uni transforms traditional mostly Japanese inspired dishes: nothing is "Plain Jane". While seared foie gras is not a traditional Japanese dish, serving it Nigiri style over sushi rice w ginger, cranberry, and lime, et voila, you have Uni's version of East meets West, combining French and Japanese cuisines to perfection. We just ate there yesterday for Valentines Day weekend...and while some things had changed since our previous pre-Covid visit, the culinary experience continues to delight. One of the twists was that they didn't offer an Omakase menu, so we sort of hand cobbled together our own...but this would have been what we would have wanted to see/experience/taste. Here's what we had and a few comments: 1. Shoshito Peppers, sapporo carmel, fried garlic, and lapsang souching (smoked Chinese black tea ($12): we started with a bowl of shishito peppers. They had a nice char and the sweet carmel mixed with the fried garlic worked really well. I can't really comment on the lapsang souching and I was unable to identify how it contributed to the dish, but a great way to start. This dish is easily shared by 2 people. 2. Maine Uni Spoon, California Oscetra caviar, quail egg yoke, yuzu ($22): perhaps the restaurant's singular "signature dish". Bursting complementary flavors. Wow. Great way to start. This cannot be shared, so everyone needs their own spoonful. 3. Grilled Hamachi Kama, makrut karamel, fried garlic, mandarinquat ($22): perfectly grilled w a crunchy exterior and sizable moist chunks of cooked hamachi in a delicious sauce, loved the mandarinquat (which I've learned is a cross between a mandarin and a kumquat). This dish is easily shared by two people. 4. Unagi, fig kabayaki, almond ($16): this was the tasty but perhaps the most "disappointing" item on the menu, because it didn't taste that different than "typical" unagi. Still, nice texture for the eel and overall pleasing. This dish comes with two pieces of nigiri, so this it can easily be shared by two people. 5. Spicy Tuna & Foie Gras Tataki, aji amarillo, apple butter, asian pear ($35): this is a signature item and may be one of the most colorful items we had, highlighted by the spicy orange apple butter. I also really enjoyed the cotrast of the spicy sauce with the sweetness of the pair. We both felt the size of the tuna tataki which was the bottom layer of this dish was too big, and so the tuna overpowered the foie gras. Perhaps a piece of the tuna half the size would have been fine. Frankly, we might even have enjoyed, the foie gras more without any tuna, but then it becomes a kitchen dish and not a shashimi dish. I think this comes with 4-5 pieces, so it can easily be shared by two people. 6. Hokkaido Aka Bafun Uni, tajin ($20): this is fresh uni from the Hokkaido market in Tokyo and it really is a cut above the Maine uni in flavor, smoothness, complexity, etc. This dish is close to pure Uni with a hint fo seasoning, not "transformed", but delicious none the less. Note: all of the nigiri comes served with two pieces except this item and the Abiri O-toro (both of which are $20 each), so and it would be difficult to share one piece...it would be messy and fall apart, so if two people want to have this, you each need to order two pieces. 7. Toro, uni soy, caviar, sourdough chips ($36): wonderful conbination fo flavors. The toro was buttery soft and flavorful, perfectly absorbing the accompaniments in one bite. This dish comes with two pieces so it can easily be shared by 2 people. 8. Crab Butter Fried Rice, pineapple, garlic chives, nuoc cham ($28): delicious comfort food, really nice, although we each would have loved some more chunky morsels of crab -- next time, I might ask if we can pay $10-20 for some extra crab, as it would have enhanced the dish for us because we love crab. Unfortunately, we experienced an unusual delay as our order here seems to have been lost by the kitchen. That alone would bring our rating down from 5.0 to 4.5 stars, if allowed. The waited comped the dish but it disrupted the cadence of the meal and we were getting pretty full by this time, so it had a meanigfully negative effect on an otherwise great experience. This probably added 20-30 minutes to what was to become a lengthy 3 hour meal. Too long. This item is a nice sized bowl and can easily be shared by 2 people. 8. Foie Gras, ginger, cranberry, lime ($25): wonderful. Two small pieces of sublime deliciousness, perfect for two people or if you can't live with just ine bite, order two portions. 9. Brown Sugar Banana Mochi, molasses ice cream, nuoc mau, sesame brittle ($16): I'm not sure why this call it mochi...seemed more like banana bread pudding w great ice cream and small dollops of banana whipped cream. Perfect ending!
Be the first to ReplyDelicious meal with friends.
We visited as a group of 4 for a business dinner mid week. The food was certainly very good, however I don’t think it met the price tag. The service was very friendly, but also very casual, so perhaps not what you would expect or want for a high end restaurant. If you fancy spending $200-$300 per head for a meal then you probably won’t be disappointed in the quality, but you’ll probably get something of a similar standard for much less.
Be the first to ReplyGreat Japanese
This vibe is cool, service amazing and the food very interesting. The sushi was different and quite fresh and they do veggies in the most interesting way.
Be the first to ReplyAwful experience/ Rude GM/ Amazing food
It is unfortunate I feel the need to take time and leave a negative review. The food is incredible, the server was great. We had no issue spending over $1,300 for a dinner of 5 and leaving a generous tip as the service was fantastic. The issue was the GM Harrison Smith. We had taken care of the check, had our coats on and finishing our drinks when Harrison felt the need to come over and ask us to leave. His reasoning you may ask ? “Excuse me would you mind getting up and taking your drinks over there? I have a party of 7 we are trying to seat here.” Can you imagine a restaurant with such a high reputation attached to a premier hotel in the heart of the most expensive area of Boston treating guests like this ? Hospitality went out the window and Harrison took it upon himself to ruin our experience. It was rude and in bad taste. Blindsided by his decision to come over, I voiced a concern for customer experience. Harrison replied in a condescending tone and followed us to the door. I will make sure to tell this story to any and everyone looking for suggestions. I will also make sure when my company is setting up celebratory dinners of the like, the last place we will be is Uni.
Be the first to ReplyRun of the mill sushi at rare prices
The sushi was decent. Can't complain about that. But it wasn't special enough to meet expectations, justify price or the service which was casual. There was the usual selection of various fresh fish presented without surprise or panache. Given the reviews and the price, I went in expecting something not available at many/most places that do a good job of serving quality fish in urban settings.
Be the first to ReplyIncredible fish quality and very creative preparations, dark, sexy ambience
We absolutely loved the menu here - extremely creative, every mouthful was a bursting surprise and a delight and the sushi quality is top of the class. It's a pricey treat but well worth it. I should also mention that service was efficient and very informed and friendly. It's a dark, sexy, glamorous vibe without being at all pretentious or requiring fancy clothes.
Be the first to ReplyFood Poisoning….don’t go
Really disappointing that I have to write this review but my husband and I both got food poisoning from this restaurant. The food is very expensive and after a tough conversation with the general manager we are not getting comped for the meal. Food poisoning is no joke and we are honestly a bit shocked that they weren’t even able to offer us even a reimbursement for just the food (we had drinks as well). Needless to say we will never be coming back and I strongly caution anyone from eating here. Raw fish and sushi is ripe for food poisoning and it’s a shame that UNI still faces this issue. I’ve read other reviews that mention food poisoning. I wish I had read them before we spent $300 on a meal that got us violently ill.

Wow!
Daughter and I were in mood for Japanese and decided to treat ourselves to something special, and UNI was for sure special.
Sushi bar was full so we sat at the sashimi bar where got to see that chef do his work.
Our waitress was super friendly and guided us to some amazing dishes we would have likely not chosen on our own.
Three best for us (in no particular order) were Wagyu Beef Dumplings, Madai-Sea Bream sashimi, and Aburi Toro nigiri.
Will remember this meal for a LONG time and hope to go back.
One of the best sushi restaurants in Boston
Loved the vibe, the music, the fabulous mezcal cocktail and the SUSHI!
Even on a Tues night, this place was hopping.
Service was kind and knowledgeable. We can't wait to go back next time in Boston.
10!
WAAAAYYYY Over Rated and Over Priced
Our evening started out with a lovely greeting from the hostess. It was all down hill from there. Also let me say our server VI was a nice fellow and very attentive. We love good suchi and experiencing new flavors, and don't mind paying for that experience. That said, we also don't like being gouged for over hyped average grade suchi, and that is exactly what they served us. There are so many great suchi restaurants in Boston that provide amazing suchi at substantially lower prices. Don't waste your money on a few morsels of seafood that Uni thinks they can Over Charge simply because they torched a sliver of fish for 10 seconds. We sat at the suchi bar and there was absolutely no interaction, nor did they allow us to watch what they were preparing. If I'm paying $300 for 2, I want the experience of seeing the suchi magic happen. Not Here. At one point I tried to video the chefs at work and was promptly told by the Mgr that was forbidden in his restaurant. There was no, Thank you for coming here or Thank You for your business, or How was everything? Brutal. Do not waste your hard earned dollars at this Over rated, over hyped and over priced so called suchi restaurant
Japanese food with a beautiful twist
We went per the recommendation of our hotel concierge, and it did not disappoint...it is located inside the Eliot Hotel. It was raining, and we had reserved an outdoor table, so initially they wanted us to sit a shared table, which I was not too keen on...first time in Boston, on a night out with my husband, they also offered us the bar, which we preferred. The bartender was very helpful with recommendations and drinks. We ordered a bunch of small plates, it is Japanese fusion...reminded me of Uchi down here in Houston. We loved everything, but the wagyu beef dumplings were ok, otherwise as the plates kept coming we were excited by the artistry and flavors of them all. The drinks were fabulous as wel...it is pricey, but it is fun to splurge when you are on vacation.
Be the first to ReplySomething Special Happening Here
Uni definitely has something special going on. The amuse bouche consisting of smoked uni paired with a quail egg yolk and topped with caviar is a visceral delight.
The tempura fried squash blossoms are stuffed with ricotta and mozzarella and paired with a romesco that has hints of sriracha (the real stuff). It's comfort food that hits all the right ooey gooey notes without ever becoming heavy or burdensome. It's a magical experience.
The wild striped bass ceviche is an explosion of bright flavors and a myriad of textures with hominy, toasted corn, corn pudding, fine slices of jalapeño, bass, and confit sweet potatoes. It hits like an acid bomb on the tongue but any notes of sourness are rapidly chased away by the delicately sweet corn pudding. Your mouth is wondering what the actual ... is happening here while your mind tries to wrap itself around the sensual culinary pleasure you've just experienced.
Always fabulous. Innovative dishes
The dishes at uni are innovative with one being more delicious than the next. The squash blossom tempura and and wagyu beef dumplings were the best. The garlic crab noodles - a delicious variation of a ramen dish. The sushi of course very fresh. A favorite whenever I am in Boston. Make a reservation and go!
Be the first to ReplySuch a fun night!
First of all, I want to give props to the restaurant for trying to figure out how to safely stay open during the pandemic. A charming young woman called us a few days before our reserve to let us know that Uni was now using the rooms at the attached Eliot hotel as "private dining," and we could have that option if we were willing to change our reserve an hour earlier. We said yes!
As for the food-- wow! Everything was amazing, and we even had a couple of dishes twice, they were so good. My husband thought the wagyu beef dumplings were fantastic; but the rest of us were "meh" about them. The nigiri of tuna and fois gras, however, was so good that we ordered it twice and fought over them! :)
The oysters were excellent, and we tried each of the four sauces but were in agreement that the spicy lemonade was the favorite. We also thought the ramen was a delightfully gourmet choice, and we were all sad to only have one to share. :). Of course, we had to get the Uni Spoon; and like everything else, it was delicious!
I tried yuzu beer which was a first, and I quite enjoyed it! Be warned that nothing is inexpensive (we ended up around $200 a person!); but if you are a foodie looking for a fantastic meal (especially in these current crazy times), then UNI is the place for you!
