Loads of staff buzzing around but because the wine is stored upstairs, a bottle that we ordered between starters and main course didn't arrive until half way through the main was served; two members of staff spent about ten minutes poring over their computer terminal or whatever it was they had behind the bar instead of sourcing our wine.
Speaking of the wine, the list is about twenty pages long. No establishment needs a list that long, it makes choosing very difficult. Then there's the prices! Minimum was about £40 but they're not arranged in ascending price so to find the least expensive wines was a real trial.
Still on the wines, the sommelier opens at the bar and takes a snifter to taste. I know this can be standard practice at high end establishments, but at £62 a bottle, I'm perfectly able to judge for myself. It was the turn of the maitre d' to taste our second bottle and, rather than swallow his mouthful like the sommelier did, he ostentatiously spat it into the bar sink in full view of the dining room. I saw him do this several times during our £100 a head lunch. If it is deemed essential to crack into my bottle for a taste prior to serving, at least spit out of my line of sight, to say nothing of the aerosol and Covid risk.
Lastly, the food. It wasn't outstanding in my opinion. It may be trendy to serve large amounts of pork with no option of a staple as a main course but it's not my idea of a treat. Chuck some chips in and make everyone smile!
A previous reviewer was spot on with "pretentious, uncomfortable" and I would add joyless to that list. The stripped back interior is interesting but it's barren, a bit like the service and the menu - comfort food this ain't and I got the distinct impression that one was tolerated in this establishment with its high principled ingredient sourcing and vegan wines.
I won't be going back.
