The Witchery by the Castle Edinburgh Reviews from The Last Year
Lovely dinner
What an amazing experience. We came to celebrate my wife’s birthday and really enjoyed the candlelit ambience in the Secret Garden. Service was excellent and the food was absolutely delicious. Highly recommended for nice romantic dinners and get-togethers.
Must visit restaurant
An absolutely fantastic meal, the food was to die for, the service impeccable, literally could not ask for more, very happy, impressed customers!!
Superb way to celebrate a special Wedding Anniversary.
I booked afternoon tea with champagne as a 35th Wedding Anniversary celebration. The whole experience was superb starting with the lovely welcome from staff wishing us a happy anniversary. The restaurant is very tasteful and clearly very popular. Our tea was really excellent with lovely savouries followed by nice scones with cream and jam and a beautiful selection of cakes. It's not the cheapest venue for afternoon tea but the whole thing just exudes quality. Perfect way to push the boat out for those special occasions. Would thoroughly recommend the Witchery.
Stunning Experience, highly recommended
We ate in the Secret Garden room and we were treated like royalty, superb service and the food was incredible, the room itself is beautiful, perfect for a romantic evening
Constructive criticism
We were last in the Witchery in April, at which time we had a 5-star experience. We are Edinburgh residents and wanted to take our visiting American friends to a special restaurant. We are well aware of the high standards of the competition in the city. Unfortunately, I felt that the staff on this occasion were unresponsive compared to our previous visit. It felt mechanical with no real engagement with the customer. No suggestions on the pairing of wines by the sommelier, in fact there was confusion in this respect. The table was cleared by leaning over customers and plates moved before we had all finished our course. I am hoping that this was an exception for a Monday night. I look forward to returning to the restaurant in the very near future.
Overrated
We went here having told it’s the best food in Edinburgh. That was quite a disappointment. The food is overrated for the price they ask. The staff was arrogant and quite unfriendly. The venue is beautiful so in the end we enjoyed the overall experience. But if you are a foodie, there’s better places to spend your money.
Absolutely Perfect
Absolutely faultless. Incredible staff, impeccable service, lovely surroundings and beautiful food that looked as good as it tasted. Not visited for 25+ years and it’s as good as ever.
Lovely experience, highly recommend
The food was excellent and the service were phenomenal. Highly recommend. The venue was lovely and felt quaint. We also quite enjoyed the cocktails particularly the Elderflower Collins.
High expectations that reality couldn’t keep up with - unfortunately
The restaurant is an island of silence near the otherwise buzzing Royal Mile. Unfortunately the proximity to the action leads to loads of instagramers near and in the restaurant which takes a lot of magic away from this otherwise really special place. Photos here, photos there, photos everyhwere. For those actually interested in the experience and not in the social media fame this is a clear minus. Service was very nice and attentive. Full points. The wine menu is extraordinary. Great wines. Great vintages. But fully priced, too. Nevertheless there are some hidden champions on the list so one can have a great wine experience at reasonable (but still high) costs. The food experience is - sad to say - average at most. The ingredients are excellent but presentation, composition and quantum are not what I would expect from a top of the line restaurant. There are much better and better priced alternatives in Edinburgh and thus the food is definitely not the reason why you would pay a visit to this restaurant. Overall it‘s a good „tick the box“ destination. Not less but also not more.

The ambience was great! The staff was very attentive and the food was really good. We enjoyed the evening. We would definitely recommend.
This spot had such a unique vibe.
All the staff members were very friendly. The service was phenomenal. I had the buckie brown crab as the appetizer then the grilled lemon sole as my main dish. I enjoyed the, but it would have been nice to be paired with some sort of side. The fish was honestly the best fish I've ever had. However, this also should have come with sides. At least over mashed potatoes or broccolini. I'm giving it four stars because the portion sizes are small, and the prices are extremely high. The toilet was clogged in the bathroom, and I found a piece of hair on my fish. This is not acceptable for a meal that is almost $100.
A Lovely Lunch for Two
This was my third time at the Witchery and I always very pleased with my experiences here. Valentina took excellent care of my partner and I for our lunch date. She had excellent recommendations for both drinks and dishes. We particularly enjoyed the oysters and red deer and haggis wellington. As always, the atmosphere was lovely— the ambiance of the Witchery is unparalleled— the service was impeccable, and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We are hoping to return and try the Afternoon Tea next time we find ourselves in Edinburgh.
Eat and bounce。
Beautiful atmosphere and the food was great. But as a dining experience we kinda had the feeling that we needed to eat fast, pay fast and get out. Had our starters and dinners in an hour and we left somewhat disappointed. Honestly too pricey.
An Amazing Experience
Worth going to just for the surroundings but the service, food and drink were exceptional also. Highly recommended and looking forward to coming back soon!
Great restaurant for a special occasion
Beautiful restaurant food was fabulous. Our waiters were so welcoming and made our friends 60th birthday meal so memorable. I will not hesitate to return when we are in next in Edinburgh.
Great for a date
The food is delicious, the service outstanding. Great for a romantic night out for couples, but not recommended if you’re hungry.
Delicious Lunch!
Delicious food in a lovely quaint setting. The wait staff were very attentive. Had mushroom soup & seafood pie. Companion had charcuterie plate & risotto with pumpkin. And black bread and whipped butter. Yummy!!!
Levels above its competitors
Beautiful venue, amazing staff and the food & wine is second to none. We couldn’t recommend The Witchery any more. All of our needs were met and very knowledgable staff.
Outstanding
A fantastic restaurant in an amazing setting. The door was to unbelievable and the staff could not have been been more attentive. Highly recommend.
Fabulous family celebration
We dined in The Secret Garden, which was lit by candle-light and just magical from start to finish. The service, food and wine was amazing. Its not cheap but we were celebrating and it was a truly special evening.
What a lovely restaurant.
I had lunch. I selected the "lite lunch" and it was more than enough food. Highly recommend the "Fish Pie" menu. In addition, the Paris Brest dessert was over the top! Absolutely recommend!
I booked for lunch a few weeks before we visited Edinburgh
I booked for lunch a few weeks before we visited Edinburgh and we had their set lunch menu. They advertise it as a light lunch, but we were so full afterwards we didn't have room for pudding. The service was top notch and very happy we came here. I chose the dining room instead of their garden area. If we ever come back again I would go to the garden area to eat. Both were lovely, but very different.
Ambience: on point.
Everything was beautiful from the exterior into the interior. Romantic, classy, intimate, just lovely. Service: exceptional, I'm a big supporter of empty dishes being removed promptly and drinks refilled. Our serving staff was also on point the entire time. Food: we ordered the meal for two, COTE DE BOEUF With Roscoff onion, celeriac gratin and Bordelaise sauce. The beef was amazing, cooked to our personal liking. The potatoes were ok, there was some type of flavor that wasn't my favorite, but this is just my personal taste. For dessert we had the Chocolate tarte, and it had every flavor it described. Did not disappoint. We both had a glass of wine with dinner and dessert cocktails. I would like to give a 4.5, only part I thought was lacking was the main meal for the price should have included a vegetable or something else and the potato wasn't my favorite. Overall, we were still pleased. *** The menu is also seasonal, go to their website to view the current menu. ***

This was a lovely meal in such a gorgeous atmosphere with top notch service. I couldn't be more pleased with our choice to dine here while in Edinburgh. Highly recommend!
While the food was good the service was terrible.
Our server was lovely but the manager (who takes payment only I am assuming) was so unbelievably rude I was shocked. I asked for the wifi password while he was setting a table (restaurant was pretty empty) but I first interrupted and said "excuse me" he responded "what." not in a nice tone either. I was taken back but got over it. Then he brought out the bill, which I was splitting, and he went to mansplain the optional donation which I never asked to donate to. I am not from the UK and felt bullied and looked down on for not wanting to donate. While the atmosphere was nice and very photogenic the manager was not. Go somewhere else.
The Witchery is all about the magnificent period rooms,
The Witchery is all about the magnificent period rooms, location to Edinburgh Castle, the tremendous restaurants, and a charming staff. So if great history, food and people are your thing, welcome! Our Library room (pictured) was exquisite. It felt like stepping back 250 years in time. Hidden doors, dark nights, spiral staircase, and creaking floors. It's like living in Ebenezer Scrooge's house! The food was fantastic all during our stay (see separate review). We would pop out of our room and there we were at The Castle or St Giles. Just amazing. Can't say enough. And it always comes down to the people who were just so great to us all. Tremendous good time.
We didn't have a reservation, and I'm told that this place
We didn't have a reservation, and I'm told that this place is incredibly difficult to get into without one. However, we were very sweet to the hostess and told her we simply wanted to stop in for a glass of wine and so she accommodated us, and let us sit on the patio for a glass of bliss. What a cool place! Definitely one to come back to if ever in Scotland again. It looked like a high roller's spot for sure. You can tell that it would be worth the price tag. Someone let me know!
THE BEST restaurant we've been to as avid world travelers!
THE BEST restaurant we've been to as avid world travelers! An enchanting atmosphere like no other! You enter through a whimsical garden alley right up to the entrance. The food was impeccable with incredibly delicate details. Our best memory from our shared time in the UK. Edinburgh is magic around every corner. We brought our baby with us who was sleeping and did not disturb others but reading other reviews it looks they don't allow children anymore.
Nostalgic trip to Castlehill
Edinburgh was alive the night we visited the Witchery. Our trip up the Royal Mile was nostalgic and helped to set the atmosphere for a lovely evening. The Witchery did not disappoint. Excellant from the minute we stepped into the restaurant. The effort to honor our requests from our cocktails to the meal were spot in. Will book again as soon as I can get back to Scotland. The charcoal buns and steak tartar were fabulous and oysters from Islay were the perfect starter. I loved the bread pudding with the duck and my husband really enjoyed the Lemon Sole. Memorable evening. Thanks to the staff with assistance for the cab. What a wonderful way to close out our week in Scotland! Hope to visit again soon.
The Witchery is beautiful and elegant.
The light is low and perfect for a dinner for two. Or if you are traveling solo, it's a lovely place to dine alone to admire the decorations and ambience. I ate in the secret garden dining room (see pictures), but you can't go wrong with either dining room. The Witchery is definitely expensive, but I cannot say the cost wasn't worth it. For the experience and delicious foods, this restaurant was a delightful visit. Not to mention, the service is prompt, attentive, and kind. Also--the Valrhona Bitter Chocolate Torte is a must if you stay for pudding.
A great five star experience! Found this gem on Instagram
A great five star experience! Found this gem on Instagram and figured we'd give it a shot. Can be a bit pricey but for white table linen service- you pay for what you get. Food was well designed and we enjoyed the scallops! It's a must!

Does anyone know how AT plans to handle cases where a seller is quitting the platform but has a sell through rate <25%? The error message I got said to fill more bids or find other ways to increase the rate.
Is AT really going to block sellers from withdrawing their money? Especially revenue made before the sell through rate was introduced??

Yes unfortunately they are finding more and more ways to lock up sellers money. Sell thru rate, refund rate, limiting withdrawal amounts ler day and per month (which for me are the same number which makes no sense). Lot of sellers leaving as you can see from the lifetime sales not really increasing. Most posts on here are frustrated sellers which is not a recipe for success

I’m sorry to hear about this - I’m a brand new seller on the platform and didn’t realize this was a *thing* - any chance you can point me to the fine print/documentation where this policy is stated (also identifying other caveats like this would be appreciated)?
