An Old Mansion In Need of A Creative Chef
This is a n elegant restaurant in a partially restored 130 year old timber baron's mansion sitting like an oasis in downtown Detroit. The lovely garden helps make one forget where they are. Inside and garden patio seating. Service was excellent. The food was presented nicely but the flavors were listless and uninspiring. The children's Mac & Cheese tasted and looked right out of Kraft.The prices were exorbitant including a higher than average corkage fee-we took a fabulous older Napa Cabernet. I don't recommend this place since the prices aren't justified by the simple, everyday dishes ($422 including the corkage and tip for 3 adults and a child). We had beef Wellington, and Walleye. Dessert was carrot cake and blackberry lemon tart both prepared well.

One of my favorite places to dine! Food is always delicious! And the service is absolutely fantastic, Christina was wonderful I highly recommend her as a server. Once you finish dining go on your complimentary history tour of the house. This is probably one of the last places you can get beef Wellington. The witching hour drink was soo delicious.
This review is for a Cityfest event I attended in September.
Wow! What a "bee"utiful dinner and supporting Bees in the D nonprofit. The setting was spectacular, located in the garden, the weather was absolutely perfect. We were greeted with glasses of champagne and strolling appetizers, chicken and waffles with a hot honey drizzle!!! We were seated at long tables to socialize with those around us. After a quick presentation, bring on the food!!! Every dish was skillfully curated and paired with a Traverse City wine. It was simply a memorable experience and I can't wait to come back next year.
This place was out of some kind of book.
It was serene and you can explore the house! The food was delicious and the service was fantastic! We will be back!

It is unbelievable how ratings appear regarding this restaurant. Yesterday it was almost empty. The service quality is average or below average. You feel the lack of experienced waiters. The lady behind the front desk had no clue nor any friendliness. The food equality is definitely very poor and very expensive. The ambience is disturbed by a piano player and it is loud in an acoustically inappropriate placement of the piano. Overall, not worth the money, effort, or time. Never back to this place. Needs a totally new management because it is in very nice historical spot.

It was a perfect evening. Our server (Christine) was delightful. The food was excellent and of course, the atmosphere was over the top. We are blessed to have the opportunity to eat at many nice restaurants and this one certainly deserves to be one of the top in Detroit. Out only regret is that it took us so long to try this place. As a bonus, we went upstairs to the Ghost bar and the bartender (Jayden?) was so enthusiastic and friendly. Looking forward to coming back and celebrating again.

Went here for the first time for a wedding reception.
Unimpressed overall. Parts of the building are really nice however some of the rooms guests were seated in had peeling wallpaper. The food was served cold and was unappealing. Small portions for a dinner meal and didn't taste good. I have no desire to return.
This is probably my favorite place in Detroit for drinks.
Very friendly staff, clean safe environment. Historic views. I wouldn't recommend the food here but everything else here is worth it

...until now. The garden party at the Whitney is the perfect summertime experience. The music selection is eclectic and fun. The food is superb and the service is excellent. Looking for an upscale experience, the Garden Party is it.

Recently went there for High Tea and it was a wonderful experience. The food was delicious and very filling, the tea was lovely, and of course, you are surrounded by the elegance of the Whitney. We will definitely be back.
Breathtaking Historic Mansion
The Whitney in Detroit is an absolute gem! Housed in a breathtaking historic mansion, the restaurant exudes timeless charm and elegance. From the moment we stepped inside, we were captivated by the opulence of the home, which has been beautifully preserved and restored to create a truly magical dining atmosphere. The service was outstanding. Our server was attentive, knowledgeable, and made us feel so welcomed throughout the evening. The highlight for us was definitely visiting the Ghost Bar on the third floor. With its inviting ambiance and cool cocktails, it’s the perfect spot to relax and enjoy the fascinating history that seems to linger in the air. If you are in Detroit (The Whitney made me forget I was in Detroit), don’t miss this incredible piece of the city’s past.
Amazing experience
Excellent service and excellent food. Everyone so friendly and warm. My first time there but I felt like a regular. They invited us to look around at the mansion, didn't rush us at all, the atmosphere is so special
Felt like a movie star
I felt like a movie.star, I was treated so well. Jay at the Ghost bar is a true mixologist and drinks were $5 dollars off for happy hour. Brittany our waitress was excellent and even surprised me with hot lemon tea to soothe my throat. (Had a sore throat). Daniel was so kind and bought a drink for a grieving customer. The pianist played our favorite songs. Go here for a beautiful environment and where you will be treated as if you are a VIP.
High tea wasn’t worth $125+ for two
Had high tea with my mother last month. Limited Valet parking, paid parking nearby on the streets. The high tea experience wasn't what I had hoped for at $125+ for two people. :/ We didn't get to pick our tea flavor at all, house tea was okay, but not what either of us would have preferred at all. The scones were maybe two small bites at most and quite minuscule. The cranberry and blueberry scones were okay, just itty bitty. The condiments for the scones were butter and jam, my mother and I were thoroughly disappointed with the spread. My mother's two favorite reasons for high tea, R. Claudette, cream and lemon curd, neither were present for our tea. Utter disappointment for mom and me. The tea sandwiches looked decent, but the breads were all dried out. The cucumber finger sandwich was really bland. The chicken sandwich itself was OK, but once again the bread was dried out and crusty. The pumpernickel for the smoked salmon was also dry and crusty. It seemed as if these finger sandwiches had been out for many hours or even made the night before. The deviled egg was super plain and boring and nothing special at all. The small caprese had a dried and steel piece of toast or crostini. The strawberries and cream was okay. The desserts were so-so. Nothing was carb worhy to either of us. The execution, taste, flavor, texture, staleness of everything was subpar for what I would expect of the Whitney. Our server, along with the others, timed out all their food runs to our tables around the same time. It felt like a cafeteria style dining for our high tea experience. Thoroughly disappointed in the experience that I waited for a couple years to schedule with my mother. We've been to many high teas all over Michigan and out of state in New York and Chicago and this was the most disappointing high tea. I've been to thus far.
A Detroit Dining Experience
Beautiful room . Beautiful exterior. Met by a gracious manager/ host and had a wonderful evening. Service was excellent as was the food. Make sure to visit the Ghost Bar for a pre or post dinner cocktail . Great bartender. A wonderful dining experience. Looking forward to a future dinner
Rude hostess and slow service - but excellent food
We had a nice dinner here at 5:30pm on 12/13/24. This was my fifth time here, and this time I did find some things a bit off. I found the hostess to be a pretty rude sadly. Among other things, she went to seat us in a small room that felt like it was 80 degrees. I asked before we were seated if they could turn the heat down. She did not reply but instead just picked up our menus and walked away. Then she returned to the hostess stand, ignored me entirely, and started helping the people who arrived after us. She never spoke to me again, and seemed annoyed as she eventually asked a host to seat us. Not smooth, and totally unacceptable in my book. I have more accommodating hostesses as Applebee’s. And just to clarify, there were still many empty tables at this early hour. The piano was too loud and a bit sloppy. Service was slow, despite our server being aware of our time constraints and despite it being on our reservation. Normally slower service in a fine dining establishment would be no problem, but we had a show to catch. We were there two hours - and it would have taken longer if we had not asked our server to please cash us out. Anyway, the food was absolutely excellent and of course the ambiance in a historic home is so lovely. I love the Whitney and will return still, with the hope for better service next time.
Good but not great
The Whitney in Detroit offers a stunning historic setting with impeccable architecture and ambiance. However, our dining experience was overshadowed by the overwhelming noise level, making conversation extremely difficult. The Pianist was excellent but he played loudly and never took a break in the 2 hours we were there. The lack of tranquility detracts from fully enjoying this otherwise elegant restaurant. I read many raving reviews about this place, so my expectations were high. I would say the food was good but not great.
What an improvement from May ‘24!
What an improvement! We visited earlier this year and had a terrible experience - poorly tasting food, awful service, all in all, not a “fine dining experience” as they tout. However, we visited for Sunday brunch and it was spectacular in all ways: sumptuous and varied offerings, exceptional service, and of course the setting - the Mansion decorated for the season. After our terrible experience we were contacted by the GM, Tim, who had just started, and he asked we give them another chance. It clear he and the current team have hit it out did the park and we will be back for many more meals!

Let's say Peter has a great morning and decides to take his three friends to The Whitney Detroit at 6 PM the same day.
He checks the restaurant's website and sees that no reservations are available. He then looks at the The Whitney Detroit page on AppointmentTrader, but finds that there are no user postings either.
That's where the community-driven bid process comes in.
Peter can place a bid on AppointmentTrader, which serves as a reward for any community member who chooses to work on securing the reservation. AT then notifies experienced users who may be able to help.
Step-by-Step Process
1.) Setting a Reward (Bid)
* AppointmentTrader uses historical data to recommend a reasonable reward amount for securing a reservation - let's say $100.
* Peter really wants to go, so he increases the bid (or reward) to $200.
* At this stage, the reservation does not exist yet.
2.) A Community User Picks Up the Bid
* FulfilledThread16, an experienced AT user, has a strong track record of successfully securing reservations and low refund requests, they receive a notification about Peter's bid.
* FulfilledThread16 picks up the bid, meaning they will now work on securing the reservation.
* Peter can now talk to FulfilledThread16 for any questions Peter may have as FulfilledThread16 user fills the bid.
3.) Finding the Reservation
* FulfilledThread16 now uses their connections at The Whitney Detroit to secure the table.
* If they successfully get the 6 PM table for four, Peter receives a confirmation that the reservation has been secured.
* If FulfilledThread16 fails to secure the reservation, the bid is returned to the pool so another user can try.
4.) Payment & Protection
* Once the reservation is secured, FulfilledThread16 receives the $200 reward which is credited to FulfilledThread16's AT balance, where users manage their own funds and can withdraw via available payout options such as bank transfer, PayPal, or Zelle.
* Peter can now enjoy the dinner with his friends at The Whitney Detroit!
* As with all transactions on AT, disputes and no-show fees are handled through the platform's community-driven resolution system. Users with a strong track record are incentivized to fulfill bids successfully, and community members can report issues to maintain trust in the marketplace.
