Outstanding
Went for the wife’s birthday, an excellent food tasting experience. Every dish carefully crafted with some incredible flavours from some real unique ingredients locally foraged.

Always brilliant. Light. Loads of courses. Wonderful team serving. Amazing food and wine. What else do we need! Thank you. So consistent.
Be the first to ReplyAbsolutely amazing food but….
I’d previously visited the Whitebrook a couple of years previously, but never stayed there. I was looking for somewhere to celebrate a very special occasion for my partner and I, and saw a “rooms and food” offer, so booked it. Firstly, the Whitebrook is not cheap, and there are Michelin star restaurants at significantly lower prices, so we were expecting something special. Let’s start with the good stuff: The food was exceptional, form beginning to end. There wasn’t a a single dish we didn’t enjoy, and they adapted perfectly to one of us being pescatarian. The wine was delicious, but very expensive for what it was, and I do feel restaurants shoot themselves in the foot by such markups. Given it was a Thursday, and there were only 8 covers dining in total, I’d imagine they could do with more custom, so why not extend the “winter wine flight” offer of “2 for 1” to attract customers. Regarding the accommodation, the room was clean and served its purpose, but was small, and rather tired, and several fittings either broken or falling off. I realise that it’s “not a Hotel”, but again, the prices should reflect that. Unfortunately, it was the overall ambiance that lets it down badly. The “greeting” upon arrival was about as poor as it can get, and I’m afraid the sommelier is woefully unprepared to welcome guests. Furthermore, he was completely unable to acknowledge or engage with my (female) partner, who felt completely ignored. If Seńor R has a “woman problem” he should perhaps reflect on how that makes people feel. Despite my attempts to engage with him in his local (Spanish) language, his rather surly attitude failed to lighten. Thankfully the waiter Philip was absolutely charming, jocular and the complete opposite of his colleague, and was equally bright and cheerful serving the “tasting breakfast” the following morning. Given the number of covers dining, one might have expected that the Chef himself might have taken it upon himself to pop out and have a short interaction with his customers, but alas that did not happen. If the Chef/owner cannot be bothered, and his “front of house” cannot either, then I’m afraid that despite amazing culinary skills- some of the best I’ve ever had- I’m not sure they deserve to succeed. (I notice that they appear not to read their own reviews, or certainly never take the time to respond to comments, so again……) Did I enjoy it? Yes- the food alone made it worth it. Would I return? Sadly not- or certainly not at these prices.
Be the first to ReplyGreat food and service
The food was amazing, beautifully presented and balanced. The service was excellent and informative! All in all everything was excellent my only negative is that the restaurant itself is in the middle of nowhere which makes getting transport if you want to sample the great wine choice, a little difficult.
Be the first to ReplyUnassuming and unique - regional cuisine at its best
A long overdue revisit to The Whitebrook, it was to be our second Michelin Starred Welsh restaurant in 2 days. With the focus on ingredients locally sourced, grown and foraged - supplemented with fruit and vegetables from the kitchen garden - Chris and his team were awarded a Michelin Green Star in recognition of their sustainable practices and it shines through in the food we ate. Drinks and nibbles in the bar before dinner with a top notch Negroni, before moving into the dining room for our 9 course dinner. The front of house guys, Roman and Zsolt, provide a relaxed and quietly confident service, underlined with a great knowledge of the food and drink offered to their guests. Highlights of the menu were the Severn and Wye smoked eel with seaweed custard, truffle baked parsnip and the main course hogget 4 ways with an amazing rolled belly crisp. However, the halibut poached in Monmouthshire ham fat stole the show - a glorious dish. Having the wine flight with the tasting menu, Roman served some real off the beaten track selections with the “Little Bee” Pinot Gris from Devon and the Hunny Bunny by Judith Beck from Austria really different from the run of the mill choices usually seen with flights and both were a revelation. We took the additional cheese course and Zsolt expertly guided us through the selection of Welsh cheeses on offer with tasting notes and the optimum order to eat them. A real high quality dinner, well paced and packed full of flavour. The next morning, we were greeted with a delicious tasting breakfast menu with sublime sourdough crumpets, lovely bacon, black pudding and Charcuterie from nearby Trealy Farm and the best ever muffins - apple and meadowsweet. The food and service surpassed our previous visit and we will certainly return, our only regret is that The Whitebrook is not located on coastal Dorset!
Be the first to ReplyDefinitely not Michelin star worthy
I've eaten in a lot of Michelin Star restaurants and expect a certain standard not just with food but decor, presentation, table set up, staff attention etc. The Whitebrook was underwhelming from the get go. Not terrible but not good enough that you feel that there has been enough attention paid to detail. I could go on about the peripheral details but I won't. Lets move onto the food itself. We'd contacted The Whitebrook prior to arriving and notified them that one of our party was dairy intolerant. Having done that at other Michelin Restaurants I would have expected alternatives to be in place. Not here. I got served exactly the same as my wife but minus the dairy elements so that each dish looked unfinished and certainly didn't deliver as a complete taste experience that the chef had planned. We're in 2024. Being dairy intolerant or Gluten intolerant is not such a rarity. You'd have thought there would be measures in place to make the diner feel considered for what is an expensive meal and a special evening. I certainly didn't have that feeling here. The other point that was a major turn off for both my wife and I was that each course that had a sauce with it was majorly over seasoned. The sauces were so salty that we couldn't finish each course. We were both really trying to turn a blind eye to the indiscretions at The Whitebrook and to enjoy the final evening of a wonderful long weekend in the area culminating with our gustatory experience at The Whitebrook. We were left feeling very flat and disappointed. Neither of us has ever felt that when leaving a Michelin starred restaurant before. Hope it never happens again.

We went for a special birthday having never been before. The ambiance was terrific, the staff were attentive friendly polite and helpful, and the food was outstanding. Highly recommend and will return.

What a fabulous meal. Interesting, unusual, delicious ingredients, with friendly, highly professional service. One of the best meals we’ve had ages.
Be the first to ReplyStunning food!!
We were on holiday in the area and found this Michelin starred restaurant while googling local places to visit! What a find!! Beautifully restored building, and fabulous food concentrating on local, seasonal and foraged food. We had the 9 course tasting menu and it didn’t disappoint. The local cheeses were delicious and the local sparkling wine was so good we wanted to know where we could buy some to take home with us! Yes, it’s expensive, but worth it. The only feedback I’d give to the restaurant is that it was quite chilly in there, and a light in the car park would have been good. Otherwise, can’t fault it!!
Be the first to ReplyOverrall not what I was expecting but the food is incredible
Phenomenal tasting menu with very interesting flavour combinations. We were celebrating an anniversary and were mindful of the price when booking Dinner, Bed & Breakfast but decided to go for it given the restaurant's reputation. The service is very understated and our welcome when we checked in and the service from the sommelier reflected that, so to that extent our visit didn't feel that special in terms of the overrrall experience. I appreciate this is not a hotel so was not expecting hotel facilities but our room (room 6) was very dark and gloomy and small, and the bathroom was in need of a refresh with poor attention to maintenance. The lounge area for pre-drinks was not the cosiest and lacked the sort of ambience I was hoping for. We didn't opt for the wine flight and asked for the sommelier's advice on a red wine. As the menu lent very much towards white wine choices he looked somewhat disgruntled and his advice amounted to take a look at the wine list and buy what you know and will enjoy - he then walked away! That was a surprise! We were a bit discombobulated by his reaction so switched to a bottle of white without any further advice from him. We did have a chat with him a little later on when he warmed up a bit! We thought we would not spend quite as much if we didn't take the wine flight but we were wrong as the mark up on wine is pretty hefty (not unusual of course). So, in summary, all in all the most expensive evening meal we've ever had and the food was amazing (it does naturally take a while to get through the 8 courses and we only had one gap between courses which seemed a little too long); however as an overrall arrival to departure experience it lacked a certain extra specialness which I was hoping for given the price point.
Be the first to ReplyVery special getaway
Stayed for two nights for a celebration. All I can say is that it was faultess. Wonderful service from start to finish. Its remote location is part of the magic, in a beautiful wooded valley running up from the Wye. The rather plain white exterior belies what lies within. An intimate, contemporary, informal restaurant with some great artwork. The food is simply stunning, the default is a tasting menu, but as we were staying two nights we had a la carte on the second night. The very clever use of garden and foraged herbs ran through the whole menu, which delivered a very different and very pleasant experience. Every dish hit the mark without exception. The wine list was exceptional as the was the sommelier, with a very friendly and practical approach. We went with a Welsh white on teh first night and an English red on the second. Both were excllent. Our room was very comfortable and luxurious. Given the small number of rooms and the location on a very quiet lane. The quietness is remarkable, so delivered a very good nights sleep. Onto breakfast, also delivered in a tasting menu style, which was unsusual, with dishes on a par with dinner. All local ingredients cooked to perfection and portion sizes appropiate to the number of dishes.
Be the first to ReplyConsistently brilliant, and for a tasting menu - never over whelming!
Long over due review of a local favourite. This is obvs no ordinary local though, instead carefully and thoughtfully prepared garden fresh (ie foraged) food, with brilliant tasting parings and twists (that work) and incredibly, in spite of the many courses, never leaving you feeling over whelmed - ie flavours / cooking approach (v little oil / butter) means its a wonderfully light tasting menu. I am only sorry i havent left a review before - but the staff are consistently welcoming, the wine selection fab - and we are always blown away by the flavours. Thank you all! ps - sure its not "cheap" but for the courses and quality its v v good value!

Food on the whole was excellent . Except for the baby leeks with the lamb which were gritty. Waiting staff very sombre!! Please lighten up we are out for enjoyment.

Absolutely wonderful, worth every penny. Beautiful handmade crockery and accessories complemented an amazing Foraged menu featuring unusual items such as bittercress, meadowsweet and Douglas Fir - some flavours I've never tasted before. Elevated parsnip and jerusalem artichoke to an astounding degree, and if you stay overnight you get a "tasting breakfast" to rival the previous night's dinner. Well worth getting the paired wines to go with the tasting dinner if you can. Fabulous

Absolutely great food: imagination, flair, skill and inventiveness. Some of the best food we've eaten, and we've eaten a lot of great food. The staff are utterly delightful: welcoming and extremely professional without being stuffy or intrusive. Perfect. Come to this place for wonderful food, relaxation and beautiful scenery wherever you go in the area.
Be the first to ReplyOutstanding 3 course taster meal
Access - no issue whatsoever, it’s a wide single lane in the country side with bypass points throughout Parking - plenty considering the venue is small. I drive a nice car and had no problems whatsoever Decor - professional, contemporary and what you would expect from a Michelin star restaurant; it had a calm spa like ambience without clutter to distract Food - the 3 course taster menu has two choices per course with creative palate cleansers at the start and in between courses; the most delicious table bread and butter varieties are also provided. We chose both options for each course, ate half each and swapped over and had no complaints whatsoever. The mackerel starter, white pig main and rhubarb desert was the top favourites. Service - professional at all times and not at all cold, the change in staff per course kept it interesting and at no point did I feel rushed or interupted. Our meal lasted 2.5 hours which was a real pleasure; when paying £55 for a meal you expect the time to enjoy the company you are with and of course the food, I felt entirely comfortable and relaxed. If you want to get in and get out, this is likely not the place for you, the attention to detail regarding the dishes is exceptional, that level of presentation and effort takes an incredible amount of skill, and of course time. Cost - £55 each for table water and an exceptional 7 plate dinner and a 2.5 hour experience, I’d say that was pretty bloody reasonable
Be the first to ReplySome good some not so
Place totally lacks charm, decor is cold (green walls!) and nothing special. Service is painfully slow, 10 min wait just to get a drink list. Found the same ingredients appearing in all the dishes with the exception of the desert. Lady serving was warm and helpful, one other guy was clearly bored and just going tough the motion, also quite grubby. Wine way overpriced, no excuse for selling a £12 bottle for £50, as for the Premier Cue Chablis can only assume the bottle had been open for days, was really quite horrible and not a full measure. Finally unless you drive a tractor access is terrible, do not bring an expensive car in winter here whatever you do.
Be the first to ReplySuperb Food and Service
Lovely restaurant. Attentive staff and a high attention to detail, including impeccably clean toilets. The 5 course lunchtime tasting menu actually turned out to be more like 9. Plate after plate of exquisite (albeit tiny), imaginative and beautifully presented dishes which packed a punch in taste and texture. The fish dish in particular (I sadly forget which fish) was outstanding. I must confess I wasn’t bowled over by the desserts and the pine flavoured fudge wasn’t to my liking at all, but overall that was a meal I won’t forget in a long while.
Be the first to ReplyFor a special treat: inventive cuisine, warm relaxed and peaceful atmosphere.
A brilliant tasting menu dinner in relaxed informal surroundings. It’s small and quiet but glowing with atmosphere. The house speciality is using local produce and foraging for wild ingredients (sea aster, pine, estuary greens, mugwort, forest floor) that add a unique twist to fine Michelin starred fare featuring venison, monkfish, eel, parsnip etc. all presented beautifully. ideal service… great wine list: the local sparkling Ancre Hill blanc de blancs a particular highlight. Oh… and the breakfast! A sequence of small plates served in tasting menu style including pine cured salmon with sourdough crumpet building up to the bacon, sausage, egg, black pudding course at the end. It’s not cheap, but as a treat for a special occasion it is ideal.
Be the first to ReplyExcellence personified
From the moment we arrived at the hotel everything was pure class. Early check in was no problem, the room was beautifully appointed and the staff very helpful. We had the taster menu for dinner, this was not cheap but worth every penny. Never having experienced a Michelin starred restaurant before we didn’t know the treat we were in for. Every course was beautifully presented and the serving staff took the time to explain what we were having. The food, a lot of it locally sourced was delicious and the intensity of the flavours had to be experienced to be believed. The staff were very helpful in wine choice to extent of letting sample preferred choices. Breakfast was a continuation of the same excellence. Overall a wonderful experience and one we would recommend wholeheartedly.

One of the best tasting menus we have ever tried. Every member of staff we had the pleasure of meeting was friendly and made us feel very welcome. Everything felt so special. The whole stay was amazing, and the breakfast was a delightful surprise.

Tremendous - faultless from start to finish, simply one of our best experiences ever. World class service, creative, delicious, interesting, stunning food with even better wine. Dairy intolerance was incorporated without fuss or reduction in quality. Have been to a number of one star places and the Whitebrook must be pushing for two. The breakfast isn't bad either :).
Be the first to ReplyLocally foraged food in a unique setting
We have visited now a couple of times and enjoyed the Taster Menu on each occasion. The ingredients are locally sourced and presented well, our only critique is that we would have liked a wider variety of flavours/taste sensations to give the menu another dimension. Service was good and the Somelier was very helpful providing some great insight into the selection available. Very enjoyable afternoon
Be the first to ReplyClever cooking with locally foraged ingredients
A wonderful restaurant and hotel tucked away in the Welsh countryside.
Well appointed room with spacious bathroom and delightful freshly baked Welsh cakes alongside some fine ground coffee and quality teas.
Dinner begins in the bar area with some well crafted cocktail’s utilising local foraged ingredients served with crispy kale and fermented mushroom purée canapé.
Front of house worked extremely efficiently and the sommelier was a font of knowledge and really showed a genuine interest in the flight of wines chosen to accompany the tasting menu.
From beginning to end, the dishes presented by Chris and his team displayed a real understanding of the ingredients used, the flavours marrying together into a well balanced result.
Highlights included the hogget main course, an interesting cheeseboard and the truffle baked parsnip - a dish that will stay in my memory for a long time.
A peaceful overnight sleep followed by a sumptuous breakfast round off a great stay, well done to all and we will return.
Not to our taste and vastly overpriced
Although the food is well presented very little of it was delicious. There were lots of interesting foraged or homegrown ingredients but they simply weren’t tasty. We expected better from a Michelin starred restaurant and we know that foraged food can taste amazing from our positive experiences in Ynyshir and SY23. There were several things that tasted so unpleasant that I left them on my plate. This is an unusual occurrence when I eat at restaurants. In addition to this, the lengthy waits between courses meant that we were actually bored before the end of the meal. The service was of extremely high standard but the overall atmosphere was very serious and pretentious. We were disappointed that our dietary needs (lactose intolerance) appeared to be considered for the first time when we arrived, even though this information was requested and shared upon booking. Having said all of this about our experience of dinner, the breakfast was extremely good and very tasty. Overall, we felt that the entire experience was overpriced for what we received and we would not want to return.
