Enjoyable pre-Cheltenham stay
Lovely room - warm, spacious, comfortable - excellent nightโs sleep. Good dinner, especially the excellent Cote de Gascon (?sp) wine, breakfast also. Pleasant, helpful staff. Beautiful location with much of interest for those interested in the Mitford family, as The Swan used to be owned by the Duchess of Devonshire nee โDeboโ Mitford.
Be the first to ReplyGreat service at The Swan Inn
We stayed 2 nights in the rooms opposite The Swan, our room was great, spacious and comfy looking out onto the Windrush river. The location is lovely, very peaceful, but only a short drive into Burford. We ate both nights in the pub and were really impressed with the whole experience, candles and fresh flowers on every table, 2 wood burning fires, friendly staff and great food! A short but tasty cocktail list was a bonus too. Breakfast was good and served by such a friendly young lady (sorry we didnโt get her name) but she deserves a special thank you for her excellent customer service.

Had a lovely 2 night stay here with friends. Stayed in the cottage across the road. Very well kitted out. All the staff were amazing and very helpful. Breakfast was great both days. Evening meal was really good the first night not so good the second. Pheasant was a bit dry and steaks not cooked to how requested but it would not deter us from going back.

Although we only stayed for one night, we were made very welcome and all the staff we met were very friendly and efficient. We stayed in one of the converted stable rooms with parking right outside, and everything was clean and comfortable. The rooms have been very well converted and we had a lovely view overlooking the garden. Both the evening meal and breakfast were very good, and overall there seemed to be a really nice, friendly atmosphere.

We stayed here due to a nearby wedding and cannot fault it at all. The room was beautiful and immaculately clean with everything that you could possibly need for a stay. The breakfast went way above expectations. The best avocado on toast that I have ever had! The service from the lady (blonde hair but whose name I donโt know, sorry!) was amazing and sheโs definitely a credit to the business. We will definitely return when we come back to explore the Cotswolds again. Thank you!

We had a wonderful stay at The Swan Inn. We feel lucky to have found it and loved everything about our stay. Our room was clean, cosy and comfortable. I had two of the best nights sleep there that I have had for a long time. The room was quiet and warm, with views of the orchard garden, river and hills. We loved watching the red kites gather over the fields in the evening. Breakfast was very good, freshly cooked to order. The staff were all lovely, nothing was too much trouble. We loved the Mitford connection with the pub and village. We very much hope to return and stay again.

We had dinner here, then stayed overnight. The meal was superb, and the service friendly and efficient. Good wine list. Our room was very quiet and comfortable with amazing views. ( we were in the cottage across the road from The Swan). Breakfast was very high quality with a wide range to choose from. Again service was very friendly and efficient. Cabaret during breakfast from the hens outside. One warning - our bathroom had a deep freestanding roll top bath - as we are in our 80s this was a major difficulty. If like us you are not agile, make sure you have a shower not a free standing bath! Rooms with no freestanding bath are available. Overall, highly recommended.
Be the first to ReplyGreat Old Village Inn
We had a very nice 2-night stay here at the end of June 2022 when walking in the Cotswolds. The place is lovely, the rooms very nice and comfortable, and it has nice grounds. It is set in the quiet village of Swinbrook next to walking trails and a short walk from the town of Burford. Food overall was excellent with the following exceptions at breakfast: one egg dish (we can't recall the name) was one-dimensionally spicy, they did not provide fried bread as an option with the Full English and said they stopped preparing it a couple years earlier (a common recent change in England - please bring back the fried bread) and the bacon was American-style "streaky"bacon rather than the more traditional English bacon (again, a common recent shift - please bring back the other bacon). They have great, well-kept cask ale, a small selection at any time (3 pumps) but with a good range of nice-quality beers: they had Timothy Taylor Landlord, North Cotswolds Windrush Ale, and Butcombe Bitter when we were there. Overall, service was great. Of the two men with whom we primarily dealt, one had a tendency sometimes to be a little curt but this seemed due to being very busy and was otherwise great, and the other was excellent and very friendly. We had our lunch and dinner booked ahead of time so had no problem. We noticed limitations on the service and availability but this was, as with elsewhere in England (and here in California), due to lack of employees resulting from the shortages in the wake of the Covid shutdowns.
Be the first to ReplyPoor service and subsequent lies
We visited on Friday lunchtime, and I stated I would like to order food but was informed the kitchen was closed. No issue, I just ordered a drink instead as the weather was lovely and the setting in the garden ideal. We could drink while planning where to go next for food. The garden was almost empty, all bench tables vacant at the raised part of the garden. We then witnessed other people be offered dessert. Thought this was odd, as surely we could have been offered even an ice cream, which would have gone down nicely in the heat. We enquired again at our table and were told we couldnโt order. Only for the waiter to walk to the next table and ask if โthey would like dessertโ. At this stage I thought we were maybe being filmed for a TikTok sketch, to witness our reaction. We sat at a table with dirty dishes and glasses for over half an hour, despite staff walking by many times. Iโve been involved in the running of F&B establishments for many years, and thought the standard of hospitality was very poor. However I have sympathy, recruiting/training staff since covid has been tough for the industry. Therefore we didnโt complain about any of this, we did enjoy the drinks and just moved on to find food (nearby at The Angel in Burford btw, fabulous food/setting/service, 100% recommend). My partner wrote a review (the only negative review of our entire weekend in The Cotswolds) and the reason for my writing now, is to address the astonishing lies posted by the owner. On the previous post you will see it was claimed we were informed it was because they were โfully bookedโ. On neither brief interaction with staff were we told this. This is an absolute lie, and again being from the industry I was absolutely gobsmacked at the tone of the response on trip advisor. The garden was approx 1/3 full at best, therefore being fully booked seems far fetched at best, and the ability to offer a dessert or an ice cream was blatantly possible. All in all, a disappointing experience, made ten times worse by an aggressive, inaccurate response to an honest review.

Terrible service. We arrived at 2.25pm on a Friday afternoon and were told the kitchen was shut and so we couldnโt order food. We accepted that, even though we were hungry and decided to have a drink in the garden. For the next half an hour, other tables were served food and were asked if they wanted dessert which was subsequently ordered and brought out. Yet when I asked again, I was told I could only have crisps or nuts. They also didnโt clean the table we sat at, yet cleaned the other tables nearby. My partner and I look and sound quite different to everyone else in the garden which leads me to believe this treatment was blatant discrimination. Absolutely shocking.

Very pleasant and peaceful stay at the Swan Inn Food is delicious and fresh. Service is great, staff are very friendly especially Donald who makes an effort to chat with the guests. Breakfast was delicious and again the staff were super helpful. Couple of things that stopped it being a wow stay. The bed in stable 1 is really uncomfortable and the pillows are like marshmallows. The room although clean in the main, there were cobwebs hanging from the spotlights and the skirting boards were very dusty. Also the waiting staff are keen to charge things to your room and we were not told that there is an extra service charge for doing this.

A huge thank you to the team at The Swan. I organized a surprise birthday weekend for my husband and everything went so well. The food was excellent, the rooms beautifully done and comfy and the staff were so incredibly helpful and patient with all our last minute requests and changes. Thank you so much for everything, can't reccomend this pub enough!

Back again to a family favourite. Food was excellent - a beef pie packed with meat and thick gravy and served with selection of vegetables. A substantial quality meal. Waitress recommended the house red - very good

We are long time stayers at the Swan and the reception is "just like meeting the family again". Excellent room (we stayed in Widford) and the dinner and breakfast were just wonderful!!
Great to meet up again with the now "not so new team" there and also Mia, who served us at breakfast - A huge smile each morning really sets you up for the day.
We just love this place, it is, by a long way, the most welcoming and relaxing pub with rooms, we have ever stayed at. we really hope to be back soon. with our thanks to the whole team who make our stays always "so special". Duncan, Gillian and Chloe.
As good as always!
We were here last month on one of their DB&B deals. We have stayed here a number of times . The room across the road was as good as ever and the food, if anything, was even better. Some of it was almost Michelin standard with very good and friendly service. Proper Covid procedures in place. Close to Burford with facilities and an excellent "garden centre" which is much more than that. Highly recommended.

Just the most lovely, inviting place to have a special meal. Warm welcome, excellent food, delightful friendly service. Thank you so MUCH for the last minute change to our booking due to lockdown. We shall be back again soon. Highly recommended.

Charming Pub/Restaurant in a very pretty location, spotlessly clean, friendly and helpful service and very tasty food.
We will definitely be back soon.
We met at the restaurant without booking into the hotel.
Wonderful birthday treat
Came here for my wifeโs birthday and we were in the cottage across the road from the Inn. The outlook was open green fields with various wild life in abundance and for the first time for a long time saw a hare. The room is quite well equipped but the water pressure in the shower was very low other than that the room was quite and very comfortable and it has an opening out via patio doors into a walled garden with seating for coffee or perhaps drinks.
The restaurant produces good whole some pub food with a good varied menu catering for everyoneโs taste but l am sure if you had a particular request they would accommodate you if possible along with a well stocked bar and good choices for wines. Excellent location next to a trout steam, near to Burford and Stow on the wold and the village is accessible by a single tarmac road coming into a wonderful preserved village. Quite a lot of history in the area associated with the Mitford sisters which was really interesting to learn about.
Really enjoyed our stay and would look forward to visiting again sometime hopefully in the future
Some of the best food in Burford
Finding this delightful pub can be a challenge. Off the A40 you need to go through Widford, then turn left over a bridge to find it. It has a very large garden, and an outside bar has been built. We had dinner inside. I had a Chicken and Bacon salad with a caesar type dressing. It was very good. My wife had the Salmon and Cod fiskcake which was clearly homemade and fresh. Service was very pleasant, and two managers checked that we were enjoying our meals. We will definately return.
Be the first to ReplyNO HOT WATER!
The staff were generally extremely pleasant and very hospitable at The Swan in Swinbrook during our stay over the weekend. Very nicely located, good distance from Burford etc and a pretty building.
Sadly however, having arrived at lunchtime we were informed that room wouldnโt be available until 4pm (understandable given the current COVID situation and pressure) so we decided on a 3+ hour walk into the local town for lunch and back. We were not lucky with the weather and arrived back to our room looking forward to freshening up before our dinner reservation. There was no hot water and despite highlighting this to the team (and promised a solution in 15 minutes) it was never resolved that evening and we had to attend our dinner reservation as we were.
Hot water is a basic comfort, and not being able to properly wash had a huge influence on our ability to enjoy our time. Ultimately made for an extremely disappointing stay.
