The Sefton Hotel Isle of Man Reviews from The Last Year
Worst hotel experience I've had.
We stayed for 9 nights especially for TT race week. So we didn't mind paying £3200 as everything is expensive during this time. We had a atrium room which was dirty and no view. The room was big but felt like I was on the set of fawlty towers. The bed wasn't made at all during our stay housekeeping just replenished toiletroll and emptied bins. The bathroom smelt of a sewer at all times, I had brown sludge come out of bath tap and no shower curtain in shower cubicle. One day housekeeping actually left our room unlocked after she had been in to do nothing! And we were out all day. Luckily nothing was taken. Overall I found staff friendly and breakfast was good thankgod. Given what we paid it would be overpriced at £1000 and we paid alot more. I have no idea where the refurb was because it all looked run down and not pleasant place to be. We were there for TT so that kept our minds happy. But I wouldn't waste money on this hotel. Pictures on website are not what you get. Very disappointing
Do not value guests
Staff okay but the whole place is very tired. They charge hotel paying customers for parking their cars in the hotel car park but do not advertise the fact. Outrageous. Complained to the owners but totally ignored. Never again. It is such a shame as the IOM is a lovely place.
Good location, friendly staff. Typical British seaside hotel.
Typically British seaside hotel - lovely reception area but some areas in need of a spruce-up. Our room, 221, was clean and tidy but very dingy i.e. dark as the two windows were not only opaque but looked out onto brick walls. Bathroom was huge but needed upgrading. On the positive side, the breakfasts were excellent as were the staff. The location is very good too - the town end of the esplanade. The adjoining pub, Sir Norman's, (undergoing refurb atm) was handy for a drink and good bar snacks. The cafe next door to the Gaiety Theatre (adjacent to the hotel) was very good for snacks and delicious ice cream and friendly staff.
Wonderful Stay
Fabulous hotel in a great location on the sea front. Perfect spot for access to all public transport. We were in a lovely atrium room which I would recommend as they are large with a lovely indoor/outdoor balcony overlooking lush plants and water features. Breakfast selection was excellent, lots of choice and great quality. We didn’t eat evening meal but the bar was really friendly and offered great bar meals. All of the staff were super friendly and helpful.
Felt unwelcome
Rude staff, nice facitilies. Felt quite unwelcome by reception. The place had a nice feeling to it, but quite old fashioned and dated. Food was ok, could be better. I thought the room was good, but again, old fashioned in style. Definitely could be improved, won't go again.
Lovely Heritage hotel in need of a refurb & upgrade but still nice.
This is a lovely heritage hotel on Douglas promenade not far from the ferry terminal . Limited parking is available in the underground park are £4 a day first come first served. Parking seems to be an issue all over the island you need a disc - disc free from tourist office but time in most places limited. The hotel is arranged round a pretty atrium courtyard enclosed so it gets hot No air con but a fan provided We had a lovely balcony ( as did our inconsiderate neighbours who sat on theirs talking one night till 2am! ) Consequently noise can be an issue. Sleep was impossible - if you close your balcony doors the room is too hot . There is a night manager to complain to . Lovely breakfast included and cooked by the hotel kitchen not the on site franchised eateries. staff helpful - large bed clean - tea and coffee. The Sefton is however due for a makeover - carpets and soft furnishings really at end of sell by! The other negative for us is the two resultants - Sir Normans Bar and the BONZAI Asian fusion both accessed from inside the hotel but are run as independent businesses. Therefore there is no hotel foyer bar/lounge to relax and socialise in before your evening meal or to chat to fellow guests. Sir Normans bar was dark and dingy as was the food served to us in there deep fat fryer/micro!! It was awful - other diners were equally unimpressed. We didn’t try the BONZAi. . Waggu steak was £65 - posh cow or not we’d want half the cow for that money! Decent evening eateries in the vicinity seemed in short supply so we were stuck with the Terrace chippy diner two streets back not ideal but edible. This arrangement means the hotel lacked an evening social ambience for us and pushed everyone to drinking in solitary on their balcony after a trip to the off licence - hence aggravating the issue of noise in the atrium which carries with the echo. Overall we enjoyed our stay couldnt fault the staff and we loved the building just the lack of a decent on site restaurant/bar/social area was not conducive to giving us that ‘holiday vibe’ No need for my lovely evening holiday outfits which didn’t come out of the suitcase ! jeans and a jumper was as far as I got! We are older and I am disabled so we prefer to dine/stay in our hotel just the choice of on site eateries was dismal. Hotel has a small leisure pool in the basement clean and water warm but not large or deep enough for serious swimming. The atrium area is really pretty but underused which is a shame.
Great break away
We just returned from a weeks stay in a junior suite, I read the reviews and was apprehensive, I was pleased with the room, cleanliness, lovely pleasant staff in all areas and the overall stay was good, sure it is a Little tired in places but the character of the hotel is great, we had interior balconies onto the Atrium which was lovely. Alex in the bar never stopped and always had a smile on his face, would definitely stay again.
Needs major rework.
Extremely outdated. Room decor belonged on a budget film set. Antiquated elevators. Water for shower was either red hot or freezing with controls finicky to adjust. Hair dryer was approx 2 watts power. Went to the bar and after being given food stained plastic menus we elected to go elsewhere. The only saving grace was the v good breakfast in a room on the 1st floor with a great view seaward.
Ok but not all Good
We were disappointed on arrival to see scaffold still up on front of hotel on 6th May 2024 when we were informed it would be gone by 3rd May 2024. We booked sea view rooms and could see the workmen on the lower floor . Our room had already been painted but the Windows were fixed and could not be opened with the sun making it too hot to sit and enjoy the view. We had to ask for someone three times in four days to mend our TV and when we left it still wasn't fixed properly. The swimming pool is a very nice temperature but the showers were stone cold and was advertised to open at 8am but never was. When we booked it was noted that it was my husband's 80th Birthday, but this was not recognised at all during our stay which was a bit disappointing .......... Apart from the above the hotel was clean and housekeeping was good reception staff were helpful and friendly......
Hot rooms
The room was so hot it was unbearable, no windows to open , just doors on a joined balcony inside, scaffolding up outside building which we were informed about 2 days before arriving. The scaffolding has been up for several months, the dining room for breakfast was hectic, we were sitting were you booked in so had a constant line of people waiting for a table. I had kippers and poached eggs ( you had to order that) kippers were dry and poached eggs hard, Dining area was tired and old ,windows of the sea view dirty, we didn’t even bother to have breakfast the next day and ate out instead. Fridge wasn’t filled daily with water or milk, apparently you had to ask for it? We have stayed here a few times before and things that we noticed last time are still present, hotel very tired and needs redecoration. Sadly we won’t be staying again, instead of going home refreshed we are exhausted due to lack of sleep. We were in the hotel with other guests that were staying there and they agreed about the room being too hot and stuffy.
Fact finding trip
Lovely welcoming hotel….. our room was very clean and comfortable, overlooking the courtyard… quiet with lovely balcony…. Yes the furnishings are older but still spotless …. Beds were very comfortable….. staff were great….. very helpful too….. we relocated there from the horror that is the best western so hadn’t booked in advance. Breakfast was very nice plenty of choice and space. Restaurant and bar are really good. Sushi’s was delicious! Car park was a bonus! We will stay again when we come over again! Thank you Sefton!
Lovely
We stayed here just for 1 night recently and it was absolutely lovely. The staff are really friendly and approachable. Due to scaffolding being at the front of the building, we were offered a room overlooking the atrium as an alternative to the one we had booked originally. The hotel was clean. The room was large with a huge bed. It had a balcony overlooking the atrium. There was a nice bathroom, hairdryer, a safe, iron and ironing board plus tea and coffee facilities in the room and a small fridge. Breakfast was delicious and plentiful. Absolutely no complaints from my husband and I and 10/10 for the staff. Well done.
Awful! Avoid! 1* not 4*
Absolutely awful hotel! Filthy, run down and smelly! We booked this hotel as was rated 4*, I don't even think it qualifies for 1*! Room was dirty, broken and badly worn furnishings. No external windows, so no fresh air, no aircon in room, must be unbearable in the summer! Vent in bathroom must be linked to the restaurant below as the bathroom smell was very unpleasant the whole time! Swimming pool area dirty and run down, ladies changing room closed, so mens was used as a communal changing room! No lock! Freezing cold! Christmas decorations were an absolute joke! They should be ashamed hanging such tatty decorations up! When we complained they came up with the excuse they were just about to start refurbishment, didn't make us feel any better when our stay was ruined! They didn't offer a refund, just a discount, no idea how much, but who would want to go back to stay at this establishment?! Avoid!
Perfect hotel
I booked a sea view room but due to scaffolding being errected, the hotel called me and asked if I minded staying in an Atrium room. I'm glad I did. I loved the balcony and having a drink on it, over looking the atrium from the 3rd floor, While there is no outside view, apart from the atrium roof, the rooms are lovely. Great breakfast. Absolutely amazing staff. Great bar in Sir Norman's. The Sefton is our hotel of choice whenever we visit the IOM each January
Disappointing
Sorry guys but booked a room for NYE and it was awful. The only saving grace was Bonsai which was as always excellent. Grubby room (with sea view) with filthy carpets and which clearly hadn’t been re-painted for many years years. No hot water. Rubbish unusable wifi and a tiny TV straight out of 1999 with no satellite or anything else. Apart from Brett who is an asset to you the rest of the staff were scruffy and disinterested. Would have stayed for breakfast but honestly didn’t want to spend another half an hour in there. This hotel desperately needs investment and is just a sad experience straight out of 1999.
Needs a lot of work
Ummmm…. Firstly the location is great, on the sea front, the front exterior looks really nice, breakfast Is good and the beds are good but that’s where the positives end. The hotel is very very tired and run down. Carpets are threadbare on the stairs. My room was not very nice apart from the bed. Smallest shower I’ve seen in a long time with a curtain so it’s constantly clinging onto you as you shower. The drains in the bathroom smelt bad, especially notice it in the mornings before I had time to climatise to it. The TV is ancient and picture is poor, don’t know even where to begin with the sofa, best you just look at the photo and make your own mind up. Parking is abit of a pain unless you have change, otherwise each day you have to park, go to reception - maybe wait 10mins for people to checkin if miss times and then pay. Take the slip back to your car to put in the window before being able to go to your room. I had a room with a balcony internally looking out in to an Atrium. Which is quirky and nice to start with. However they do use the Atrium for functions without letting you know so can be really noisy with a DJ or bands playing. Was ok for me, but might not be everyone’s thing, especially if you need you sleep or need to get on with some work. I stay in a lot of hotels every year due to the nature of my work and stayed in Douglas several times and I must say this is the worst I’ve stayed on for a while. For me this wasn’t a good experience and wouldn’t stay again.

Great Service - amazing dinner!!
Read about the site in NYT and bought a reservation at Mother Wolf in LA 2 days later. Worked great and the food was amazing!!!
Worked perfectly!
Got the reservation (that I couldn't get anywhere else) and was able to entertain a group of friends at the infamous Bern's Steakhouse.
Got into Nobu Malibu
Wonderful! My parents are visiting and we have wanted to go to Nobu Malibu for years. I tried getting a reservation myself but it was next to impossible. So glad I was able to buy a reservation on appointment trader for a decent price!
Very easy
Was very hesitant going into this experience but am glad to say that it worked out very well ! will definitely use appointment trader in the future
Fabulous Lunch
I was veeeeeerry skeptical that this would work, particularly at a restaurant as hard to get into as Nobu Malibu, and it was perfect! We had lunch outside on the patio and it was fabulous!
Great reviewer team
Just wanted to take a second to shout out the reviewer team. Even though they probably review hundreds of listings and bids a day, they still take the time to leave great comments and respond relatively quickly. Thanks!
Incredible
I got a reservation to Don Angie, which I've been trying to book for weeks! I am very happy with this service.
Best platform out there!
Super simple, easy, and fast to secure reservations for hard-to-get restaurants and locations!
This app is life changing
This app has opened my world up to so many wonderful new experiences I would never have the chance to have without access to this awesome app! 10/10!
Worked perfectly
Was a little nervous at first but was pleased to see that the booking went through flawlessly.
Highly recommended.
Success on Short Notice
Was able to snag an indoor table at Don Angie through an absolutely seamless worry-free process.
Worked perfectly, thank you!
This is a crazy holiday season in NYC and I was very pleasantly surprised to see that AppointmentTrader works! Will be using again!

So glad I came across this app :)
Quick table in Miami
I didn’t have my hopes high as it was a party of 4. In 24 hours I had a carbone reservation available! I was very happy as my family really wanted to come here
Prime time, great meal
So easy and had a prime time which I can never seem to get on normal res apps. So worth it
Got impossible NYC res

Worked perfectly to get into Carbone. So delighted
perfect
Worked well, got me into a restaurant with no availability
I was skeptical, and I still don't really know how they managed to find this hard-to-find reservation, but it was a win-win from my point of view, and I'll use this service again.
Last minute reservation for Delilah Las Vegas
Got a last minute reservation, dinner for 2 at Delilah Las Vegas: super impressed! The process was simple, transaction seamless. We had an amazing time! Couldn’t be happier! 😍
It works!
Ok at this point I've attended a reservation purchased on AT by a friend and sold a reservation personally. Both worked pretty smoothly, nothing sketchy about it. A few areas for improvement including a way to more directly communicate between buyers and sellers, but the app always seems to be in development. AT customer support is really(!) responsive and helpful too if you have questions!
Money transfer
As a seller, I like the fact i have the ability now to transfer money out of my AT account and into a bank account. Makes getting the money much easier then the process before.
Love this app
Got to go to places otherwise unreachable
Easy Access
Very easy to get into one of the hardest restaurants to reserve in New York.
Payouts Blocked Because of Sell Through Rate
Does anyone know how AT plans to handle cases where a seller is quitting the platform but has a sell through rate <25%? The error message I got said to fill more bids or find other ways to increase the rate.
Is AT really going to block sellers from withdrawing their money? Especially revenue made before the sell through rate was introduced??

LOL. Thank you The New Yorker.
Appointment
Transferring reservations is not supported in AT. Why not just use the name in the AT screenshot?
Buyers interested in Bern's Steakhouse: PLEASE READ
Same goes for 4 Charles and I Sodi
Prepaid Reservation Fee
Agreed. Ultimately not addressing this month after month is clearly resulting in a drop in certain venue’s rankings & sales.
Congrats on 3 mil
🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🧨🧨🧨 now on to 30 mill!
Need to cancel a bid, not getting a response… how do I do it?
Click on "Take off the Market Option" in your portfolio
Working on your bid?
Your bid has been “matched” with a reservation. From the time a reservation has been located, the seller of the reservation must connect with moderator to give transfer information for reservation. If the seller;however, does NOT respond to reservation transfer, then your bid is reprocessed and returns to the first step, which is connecting your request to a reservation.
Process after bid is accepted.
Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
Where do the Reservations on AppointmentTrader come from?
Mostly from people who don't need their reservations or appointments any longer. AT has no relationship with places listed and acts as a platform connecting buyers and sellers making sure that listed reservations are real and that privacy is not compromised when transacting.
What happens if my bid expires unanswered?
Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.
