The Scran and Scallie Edinburgh Reviews from The Last Year
Not really wowed by this place
We had heard great things about this restaurant so were a bit disappointed with our experience. The food was good but took quite long to come out. The service was polite but not very personable. We ate the fish and chips and fish pie. Both were good. But we weren't wowed by this place - it is run by a Michelin chef. Hmmm....
Over-hyped - unless you are four-legged
Read the reviews. We went on a busy Sunday lunchtime, delighted to get a table at a restaurant highly rated as an elevated gastropub and allegedly one of the best Sunday lunches in Edinburgh. The deep fat fryer wasn’t working so there was no kids battered fish available and yet, there were plenty of chips coming out the kitchen. Then the reason changed and it wasn’t the fryer, it was that cooking fish backed up the orders in the kitchen, so they were not doing it. Well, pan-fried but not in the fryer….Problem was that there was nothing much else on the menu for a vegetarian child to eat. So she had to settle for a portion of chips alone. Sunday dinner was ok- a bit dry, not enough gravy and Yorkshire was cremated. It was typical tasting pub food. Nothing special. Child got a Burger King when we left.
A little nugget worth the detour!
Pub cuisine revisited in a bistronomic style in a typical and more sophisticated setting served by very professional and attentive staff! The products are of quality and worked with passion and this is felt on the plate! There is taste at Scran & Scallie: book quickly to discover this beautiful and very special address!
Overpriced gastro with aspirations above its pay grade!
In order to stand out as a gastro pub in a crowded market you have to offer something unique or special. Sadly I feel the S&S offered neither during my visit. The menu features the pub classics you would expect, but the price of the starters vs. The main courses was disproportionate. The service was slow and impersonal, and drinks expensive- particularly for a pub. Following a relatively bland starter, my burger arrived which was pretty unimaginative. Just the burger and chips, no other garnish. My fellow diners also commented that it looked more like a child’s portion or a slider. Given the time I had waited for it, I sent it back with disappointment. I don’t mind expensive if the experience, service and food match expectations. Sadly on my visit the S&S was far off the mark
Excellent
Beautiful chic and traditional evening, very friendly service, the opportunity to taste traditional dishes and in particular the sticky toffee pudding, one of the best desserts of my life!
We really wanted to love Scran & Scallion, but ultimately the mains fell flat.
We selected the Scran & Scallion based solely on a “best pies in Edinburgh” review online and knew nothing further about the restaurant or the connection to Chef Tom Kitchin. Learning quickly how difficult it is to dine-in without reservations, we booked ahead. The walk from Princes Street was pleasant, took about 20mins, and was all down hill. Entering the restaurant, we were warmly greeted and promptly shown to a table. I really can’t say enough good about the staff - we were well looked after, everyone was attentive and friendly. For our starter, we went with the Asparagus. Nice, fresh spring dish; garnished with Parmesan, oil, fresh lemon zest, and a dollop of goat cheese (?). It was… pleasant? Not terribly memorable, but just nice. For our mains, we went with The Scran & Scallion Steak Pie and the Crispy Lamb Shoulder. The presentation of the pie was stellar - a beautifully egg-washed crust with a marrow bone stuck into the center. I wish the flavor had been as stellar; it was very flat, without much defining flavor or seasoning, and almost entirely gravy (I think as able to count three small pieces of meat). We really didn’t know what to expect from the Crispy Lamb shoulder, however it was the better of the two mains. I had envisioned something like a broiler finished lamb similar to a German Schweinshaxe, but the elevated, shredded lamb croquette was a pleasant surprise. The lamb was served with a mushy pea, nicely crisp spring vegetables, and a delicious sauce with creamy liver. For dessert, I continued my Sticky Toffee Pudding adventures. This was the most moist STP that I experienced in Scotland. It was delicious. This was also perhaps the best sauce I’ve had. Overall, it was a good meal, but not the highlight of my trip to Edinburgh.
Very nice surprise and excellent dinner!
After a long day tour, we finally get to sit down at this "gastropub" which I have booked online weeks ahead. There seems to be a lot of hype about this place so I have to check it out myself. We have booked for 8:30pm as we had a whole day tour to the Loch Ness. That seemed to be the peak of the evening and we were seated at a small table by the wall. The restaurant was almost full so I guess we didn't have a choice. We started off with half a dozen Islay oysters which were of a decent size and the daily special of salmon and asparagus were perfectly cooked with just a bit remaining raw inside. For mains, we chose the cod and shellfish risotto, which was absolutely delicious and not over-cooked at all (especially the risotto as we always insist on al dente texture for our pasta). The fish & chips here was one of the best I have had so far. The fish was nicely deep fried in the batter and I loved the thickness of the fish that was cut. The chunky bite size was very tender and wasn't dry. Absolutely delicious and fulfilling! All of a sudden, our tiredness from the long day trip seemed to have disappeared. With all these delicious seafood, our choice of white was a 2020 Rully "Montmorin" Jean Chartron Puligny Montrachet. What a perfect complement!
Weekend away
Really nice meal, good selection from Sunday lunch to pub classics. Good selection of beers. Service really friendly.
Yum!
Scran and Scallie has such delicious food, great wine pairings, and such nice service, we loved everything we tried! This restaurant completely lived up the great reviews I’d read.
Quality meal
Really nice neighbourhood environment and welcoming for kids, even has a little play room for younger kids and a good value kids menu for the quality. The decor is a modern and tidy version of traditional, the service friendly and the food is of good quality. Recommended.
Extremely satisfactory
They offer food, among others, typical Scottish dishes, including the Haggis, which we had tried the day before and we had liked it and here it was even better, just a recommendation: we ordered it as a starter and the quantity would be enough as a main dish. . Then we ordered the steak pie and it was spectacular. And I don't want to go on with the desserts... try it!
Disappointed
We returned with great expectations, we had fond memories of an excellent dinner, unfortunately our expectations were disappointed, the place was nice, nor has the menu changed, but unfortunately the food and service are no longer what we had tried, tasteless steak pie , perhaps the worst we have ever eaten, and to say that it was the best dish we had eaten here, eggs with asparagus, little stuff and poorly presented, mediocre wines with shameful markups, hasty, unprofessional service! We won't be returning
Not as good as last visit
The food was really good but it’s the details that matter to me; the staff couldn’t tell me which of their beers were vegan, that to me shows total disregard for customers. Side order was forgotten so arrived late after asking for it. A serviette for desert would have been nice. If you’re gonna promote yourselves as a premier league gastro pub then make sure your staff are up to the job, a couple of whom looked a bit miserable. Haven’t been here for a few years, it felt like a step down.
Lovely neighbourhood restaurant
This is a lovely neighbourhood restaurant. The food and service were great and we enjoyed visiting a different part of the city, it is worth the trip. The only negative was we felt the vegetarian option could have done with more cauliflower and sweet potato and less chickpeas. It’s a minor point and wouldn’t put me off going back.
Enjoyable but won’t rush back
This is our 3rd visit and although we enjoyed our evening out at the Scran and Scallie, we felt the cocktails let them down. We enjoyed a glass of champagne each and the little touches for a birthday celebration were really lovely. We had the soup, butternut squash brioche and oysters to start followed by fish and chips, cod and shellfish risotto and ham, eggs and chips for mains. These were beautiful and very tasty. We then tried the rhubarb bakewell tart for dessert. This was just ok- the sponge was dry and didn’t taste of much. Staff were attentive and it was a nice meal. Not sure we will rush back as Edinburgh has so many other lovely places to try.
Amazing food, less than perfect dessert
We visited the Scran and Scallie during Easter Weekend. The food was absolutely delicious. It would have been 5 stars if it wasn’t for the rather disappointing dessert. I had the 2 specials on offer, the smoked haddock muffin followed by lamb 3 ways. I can honestly say I’ve never eaten haddock or lamb as nice. The bread as a side order was a lovely accompaniment for the lamb. Truly delicious. My husband had haggis neeps and tatties for starter followed by the wagyu burger - again very very tasty. The waiter was very knowledgeable on his wines and offered us the prefect accompaniments to our meals. Then came dessert, we both had the chocolate orange and were left feeling very disappointed. The best way I can describe it was a bowl full of elements similar to when you were a child attending a party and having jelly and ice cream all in the one bowl, soggy and messy. However I can forgive that when considering the amazing first 2 courses, the ambiance and the wonderful waiting staff. Will definitely return, minus the chocolate orange.
Brilliant Scottish restaurant
Brilliant food great service , we had the steak pie , ham egg and chips was on another level, fish pie was also terrific. Waiting staff were properly on it. Recommend
Chic kitchen
Very good restaurant/brewery. French is spoken there. The setting is pleasant. The haggis is delicious and I tried a non-alcoholic cocktail with fresh cucumber and very good.
Standards drop at the S&S
The food was very good but service wasn’t up to the usual high standards. It was an hour between starter being served and main arriving. We have been coming for years and had booked this for my daughter’s graduation dinner - which we will now be cancelling.
Birthday treat
Brief trip over to Edinburgh to see niece and her boyfriend and to celebrate a birthday. I’d booked weeks in advance as we really wanted to experience Tom Kitchin’s food. The place itself has a quirky layout, but airy and comfortable. Plenty of slick attentive staff on duty who welcomed us as long lost friends. Oysters to start the proceedings and for me ‘ham, egg and chips’ which sounds like nothing but both looked stunning and tasted even better. The rest enjoyed a mixture of meals and all raved about them. Despite the place being busy, the staff never lost sight of us and we were well looked after. A birthday ball of ice cream with a candle in it and a personal ‘happy birthday’ card on the table for me just rounded the lunch off perfectly. Top class.
Excellent
The food is delicous, tasty, creative with large portions, the wine and whisky is also very good. The place is warm, cosy and pleasant, a nice moment to stay for dinner. The service was also good.
Average
Visited with friends and was disappointed. Staff member couldn’t name a bourbon they sold and the food was pretty mediocre. Disappointed.
A friend recommended The Scran and Scallie for our trip to
A friend recommended The Scran and Scallie for our trip to Edinburgh. We weren't disappointed. Our group had the steak pie, fish and chips and sourdough bread. Everything was amazing. The ones who ate fish and chips said it was some of the best they had ever had. They loved the tartar sauce.
Don't believe the hype!
My partner & I have been locals to this restaurant for the last year or so - we'd heard so much buzz about it and always seemed busy so we decided to make a booking for when we had family visiting. Food was nice, but to be honest nothing special. One of the guests had the steak pie which bizzarely only came with a pastry top which you don't expect for £20+ with no sides included in my opinion. My partner had a tasty ox cheek dish, but it was very small so not filling really for the price. Only 2 rosés on the menu with the cheapest priced at £39 a bottle, seems unnecessarily expensive. The waiting staff were ok. All in all, it was a nice dinner however there's so many other restaurants in the locality that are more affordably priced with tastier food so wouldn't visit again. I'm assuming the hype is all down to the owner's credentials, but it just didn't deliver for the price point in my opinion.
Casual dining at its best
Had booked, but arrived a couple of hours early, which the staff happily accommodated. Lovely cosy dining room with mix of furniture. All staff were helpful and friendly, throughout our time there. Good food and wine menu, with staff explaining the specials, which I found irresistible. Great experience and will definitely go again
A must visit
Four of us visited on a busy Friday evening and as expected found a lovely "bubbly" atmosphere. Whilst there is an excellent choice of food, I fancied the scallops and asked if it was possible to have them as a main course -"no problem", so had a main course sized portion, and they were stunning! The rest of the party enjoyed their meals just as much. Overall an excellent evening.
Great night out with the family.
We had a fantastic evening at the Scran and Scallie. It is much bigger than you first think on walking through the door, but they have set it up really well so you never feel swamped by people or noise from other tables. Food was really excellent, service was great, prices as you would expect for this type of restaurant. Can't fault anything, we will be back.
Impressed!
We visted on a busy Friday night. The ambiance was perfect , the food amazing and the service by Matt was excellent . Thank you.
Fantastic lunch
Today my friend and I went for lunch to scran and scallie it was my first experience. I have to say this will not be the last. The service from Matthew, Maxime and Balil was exceptional to say the least. The food was to die for. We both had scallops then the days speciality of cod risotto served with fresh mussels the flavours were wonderful. We then had a chocolate ganache that was equally wonderful. I would highly recommend this restaurant for anyone looking for great food and service. Thank you to all the staff we will definitely be back. Louise and Jan
Amazing dinner at scran and scallie
Visited this spot during our trip to Edinburgh, the menu has a wide variety of traditional Scottish cuisine and an extensive wine list . I got the haggis neeps and tatties to start which was amazing! Followed by a cod risotto special which was to die for. We topped it all off with a sticky pudding and were absolutely stuffed! A great atmosphere and service was incredible from start to finish, our server (Chelsea?) was incredible! Extremely personable and knowledgeable about the menu to wine pairings, and went out of her way to recommend us spots to visit during our stay Definitely stop by if you have the chance!
Great food
Relaxed and comfortable vibe with great food. We didn’t have a starter or pudding but the sticky toffee looked amazing. Highly recommend the steak pie and fish pie - the perfect end to a day of walking in the cold.
Prices are Unnecessary, Portions are Small and Service was Non non-existent!!!
One of the worst service experiences I've encountered at one of the most expensive restraunts I've eaten in. The table was booked online and card details required. The booking portal asked where we'd like to be seated but upon arrival we were not were we asked to be seated. The menu online was very simple but online lots of information was omitted. I ordered a pint of Edinburgh Gold which was £6.50 and this was not to my taste at all but at that price I wasn't going to let it go to waste ☺️. The cheapest glass of wine on the menu was nearly £14 which was nice but nothing to write home about. Now the food- personally I had the steak pie which was very tasty but for a dish that cost £20 it came with no veg or side it was the pie only in a modest size dish. I ordered the mash with it which was an extra £6!! It was very ordinary mash and certainly not worth the cost. My partner had the fish pie which had a measley amount of fish inside and really was more egg. Service - I don't even know how to rate this as we barely received any at all!!! The bald fella (like myself) didn't interact with us at all, he literally said as few words as possible. He reached over without saying excuse me and at the end of our mains brought us dessert menus without asking. We'd decided early on to end the experience as early as possible. To summarise the food was tasty but portions are honestly small!!! Prices are outrageous our total was £65 for 2 mains a side and 2 drinks!!! Service was non existent!!! Was it because we were 2 blokes and our waiter isn't a tolerant person? Had he a bad day and brought his problems to work? Lord knows but save your money there are much better restaurants than this one at a fraction of the price.
Food was delicious.
Started off with the scallops and haggis. We got the pork cheek and steak pie. Pork cheek was tender and had good flavor. Steak pie was flavorful and hearty. Perfect for a cold day. Dessert was a chocolate truffle cake. No too sweet and had a good balance of not being too heavy.

Great Service - amazing dinner!!
Read about the site in NYT and bought a reservation at Mother Wolf in LA 2 days later. Worked great and the food was amazing!!!
Worked perfectly!
Got the reservation (that I couldn't get anywhere else) and was able to entertain a group of friends at the infamous Bern's Steakhouse.
Got into Nobu Malibu
Wonderful! My parents are visiting and we have wanted to go to Nobu Malibu for years. I tried getting a reservation myself but it was next to impossible. So glad I was able to buy a reservation on appointment trader for a decent price!
Very easy
Was very hesitant going into this experience but am glad to say that it worked out very well ! will definitely use appointment trader in the future
Fabulous Lunch
I was veeeeeerry skeptical that this would work, particularly at a restaurant as hard to get into as Nobu Malibu, and it was perfect! We had lunch outside on the patio and it was fabulous!
Great reviewer team
Just wanted to take a second to shout out the reviewer team. Even though they probably review hundreds of listings and bids a day, they still take the time to leave great comments and respond relatively quickly. Thanks!
Incredible
I got a reservation to Don Angie, which I've been trying to book for weeks! I am very happy with this service.
Best platform out there!
Super simple, easy, and fast to secure reservations for hard-to-get restaurants and locations!
This app is life changing
This app has opened my world up to so many wonderful new experiences I would never have the chance to have without access to this awesome app! 10/10!
Worked perfectly
Was a little nervous at first but was pleased to see that the booking went through flawlessly.

Worked well, got me into a restaurant with no availability

Last minute reservation for Delilah Las Vegas
Got a last minute reservation, dinner for 2 at Delilah Las Vegas: super impressed! The process was simple, transaction seamless. We had an amazing time! Couldn’t be happier! 😍
It works!
Ok at this point I've attended a reservation purchased on AT by a friend and sold a reservation personally. Both worked pretty smoothly, nothing sketchy about it. A few areas for improvement including a way to more directly communicate between buyers and sellers, but the app always seems to be in development. AT customer support is really(!) responsive and helpful too if you have questions!
Money transfer
As a seller, I like the fact i have the ability now to transfer money out of my AT account and into a bank account. Makes getting the money much easier then the process before.
Love this app
Got to go to places otherwise unreachable
Easy Access
Very easy to get into one of the hardest restaurants to reserve in New York.
Whose name will my reservation be under when I arrive at the venue?
It can be under your name or a name you choose! Some reservation offers already include the AppointmentTrader Transfer Service which will transfer the reservation in to your name. If its not included you can add it on after buying the reservation for a small fee. One thing on that though: As many reservations become available at last minute, taking a reservation in someone else name is quick and great for privacy. Most reservations on AT are listed with a virtual phone number, so all you need to do is present the phone number at the hostess stand and you are good to go!
Payouts Blocked Because of Sell Through Rate
Does anyone know how AT plans to handle cases where a seller is quitting the platform but has a sell through rate <25%? The error message I got said to fill more bids or find other ways to increase the rate.
Is AT really going to block sellers from withdrawing their money? Especially revenue made before the sell through rate was introduced??

I will give you 50% of ALL of my PROFITS if you teach me how to make profits?
LOL. Thank you The New Yorker.
Appointment
Transferring reservations is not supported in AT. Why not just use the name in the AT screenshot?
Buyers interested in Bern's Steakhouse: PLEASE READ
Same goes for 4 Charles and I Sodi
Prepaid Reservation Fee
Agreed. Ultimately not addressing this month after month is clearly resulting in a drop in certain venue’s rankings & sales.
Congrats on 3 mil
🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🧨🧨🧨 now on to 30 mill!
Need to cancel a bid, not getting a response… how do I do it?
Click on "Take off the Market Option" in your portfolio
Working on your bid?
Your bid has been “matched” with a reservation. From the time a reservation has been located, the seller of the reservation must connect with moderator to give transfer information for reservation. If the seller;however, does NOT respond to reservation transfer, then your bid is reprocessed and returns to the first step, which is connecting your request to a reservation.
Process after bid is accepted.
Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
Where do the Reservations on AppointmentTrader come from?
Mostly from people who don't need their reservations or appointments any longer. AT has no relationship with places listed and acts as a platform connecting buyers and sellers making sure that listed reservations are real and that privacy is not compromised when transacting.
What happens if my bid expires unanswered?
Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.
