The River Café Brooklyn Reviews from The Last Year
Maybe good for tourists
The River Cafe has been around forever with lovely views, attentive professional service, and actually very good food. So why 3 stars? I came with colleagues for dinner and from the moment you walk in you are hit with the pungent smell of Lilies. Actually, the whole restaurant is overstocked with flowers and stuffed animals - which not only gives off a a sickening smell (why any chef would allow pungent flowers in his dining room is a mystery) but between the flowers and the dated decor - reminded me of a funeral parlor.
Exquisite dining
Perhaps the best meal we have ever had. The restaurant is beautiful with stunning river views. From the moment you step in it feels special. Tables are close together but this adds to the cosines of the restaurant. The food we have no words for other than beautiful. Fantastic wine list and other drinks available were brilliant. A great spot to watch the sunset over the city. Men must wear a blazer or jacket throughout the meal!
Brooklyn Dinner
Very classy and elegant spot for a upscale dinner. You do have to dress up which was nice. If price is a concern then don’t go. Old school style and atmosphere.
Wonderful place for dinner
Wonderful view, elegant space and service, very good food. The downside is that it is very busy and quite noisy, but it is still a great dining experience.

During our reservation it was expressly stated that we had to comply with a dress code, tie. In the end I was overdressed in a nice long dress with heels. the restaurant and bar was very cold. While we had a reservation we had to sit at the bar for half an hour and then were given a seat by the window. The view was very special, we were just under the bridge but it was very cold, it seemed as if the wind was coming through the windows. the food was ok, but price wise it wasn't worth it. ( $ 195 pp fix menu of 3 courses ) staff was friendly but at the end a 20% tip was imposed which was not nice on a $700 bill. This is because we are from the Netherlands and want to determine the tip ourselves based on the service and experience. It wasn’t worth it.
Fantastic location but fails to achieve greatness.
We have probably been going for 220 years and always have a good time but not a great time. Amanda was superb as a waiter with help from bernie but diid we have to wait 40 minutes for our wine and ask 3 times. Wine very expensive starting at ¥100 Lots of waiters rushing around but not seeing customers. Set meal $195 not silly in new york but over fussy and not world class. Should try harder but go foe the view and the pretty ambiance.
Excellent evening
Big thankyou to all the staff at river cafe for making our night a special one. Went there for our wedding anniversary the food was great and varied , wine superb and the view of manhattan and the Brooklyn bridge can't be bettered and the service was perfect. Thanks again and next time we are back in New York we will visit again.
So sadly this was not a special memory.
I wanted our visit to the River Cafe to be truly memorable and wrote prior to our visit to say it was a surprise for my husband. There were a number of reasons why I felt I had to make this review. 1. I wrote to the restaurant prior to our arrival to say we have recently married after both loosing our partners to cancer as well as it being my husbands 60th birthday & requested a table by the window as recommended by family having seen many wonderful photographs. I received a lovely email back saying they were unable to reserve table as it was at the discretion of the Maitre’d but had taken a note & I was very hopeful. We were not given a table by the window even though we arrived 40 minutes early and there were a number of tables for two available. We have one photograph of us with the river in the background with the table of people sitting by the window. 2. I have to say the meal was wonderful and I made a comment on the quality of the food to the waiter to pass comments back the chef. The waiter just stared at us, no smile. My husband felt he’d heard these comments many times before & just felt bored with them. 3. During my correspondence with the restaurant I also received a wonderful email from their colleague Eva, who wrote to me noting we had 2 generous gift certificates given as presents. She noted their reference numbers and said she had updated our notes on our reservation. We received the bill at the end of the meal but the vouchers had not been deducted. We realised they were busy and this may have been overlooked, but we’re extremely surprised when they came back to say they had no information on these at all & made me feel very uncomfortable! Luckily I had printed the vouchers in London before we left for our vacation. Due to our personal circumstances, we live life each day as we both know you do not know what life throws at you. We have been very lucky to visit many beautiful Michelin restaurants both in London and overseas and although their were some wonderful & attentive staff, this experience so sadly will NOT BE ONE OF OUR SPECIAL MEMORIES. We are frequent visitors to New York as we have family here, but will visit other restaurants next time.
Celebrating at the River Cafe
Okay so let’s start with the location - the view is spectacular as you dine. The engagement as you enter is one where you feel special nothing is missed your time with them is their only consideration. The food was excellent each course rivalled the previous one with the chef’s complimentary courses exposing your visual senses as well as you palate to new sights and tastes. It’s fair to say that we chose River Cafe to celebrate three milestones Jen & Dave’s 70 birthdays and Catherine & Clinton’s 25 wedding anniversary both special occasions. The River is most definitely the place to do so. We had the opportunity to thank our chef who came out to meet us and shared other places to try whilst in New York. We were aware that the bill would be high but we felt that the food, atmosphere, location and attention of the knowledgeable staff reflected value for money. We will be back on our next visit to New York. Catherine, Clinton, Jen & Dave.
Great location, superb food but overpriced and a it dated
Fantastic location and a very memorable meal. The food was delicious, but they’re not scared to charge and overall I wouldn’t rush back based on how much our meal cost. All the staff were very attentive except for the older wine waiter, we were disappointed with his manner. He was extremely grumpy and serious and seemed a bit over serving us he also never advised us that we had half a bottle of wine left as we were coming to the end of the meal. I would have expected better for the cost of the meal.
Best of the best
Best of the best. Impeccable service with splendid views of the river and Brooklyn Bridge. Each course is a culinary delight and artwork in itself. Life piano music rounded out the dining experience. A perfect place for a memorable dining experience or special occasion. I love that everyone is dressed up as well.
It’s worth every single penny
From the view to the service. From the drinks to the food. I had a once in a lifetime experience with a super attentive and friendly sommelier and several greetings from the kitchen even though I sat alone on my window seat. The soft light and piano music rocked me gently to the amazing flavors exploding in my mouth. I would book it again and again. And I am well educated in french cuisine! But next time I‘d not order a lobster. That plate was a mistake. The rest nevertheless was wonderful! Food heaven!
Not so good as the price
When you go to a fancy restaurant you expect to have a delightful meal, some dishes were nice but the lobster wasn’t fresh and suppose that a qualified restaurant can’t commit such a mistake…
Wonderful Dinner Experience
My wife and I had dinner at the River Cafe in February 2024. I have lived within walking distance of the restaurant since 1985 and even went there for Sunday brunch back in the late 1980's (when they still served brunch). I had read reviews of the River Cafe over the years and the consensus back then was that the restaurant offered fantastic views of the East River and lower Manhattan (which it does) but the food was only so-so. Forget about those reviews. Our dinner there was fantastic. The River Cafe offers a three course prix fixe (fixed price) menu (which you can find on their website). Reservations are required and the dress code for men includes a suit jacket and a collared shirt. The people who waited on us were very professional and friendly - from our sommelier (wine steward) Alex to our wait captain Bernie. We enjoyed our appetizers of bay scallops and octopus and our main dishes of branzino and sea bass and finally our dessert of grapefuit souffle and the chcolate "Brooklyn Bridge." The food was unbelievably delicious and we were treated like royalty. Between the great food and service and the spectacular view, we are very much looking forward to our next visit there.
rushed service
This wasn’t our first experience of the river cafe we have been twice before and was always an amazing experience apart from this time. we were sat down and handed the menus had literally a min to pick what we wanted to eat and menus whipped away. we were then given an the Amuse-bouche which the waiter rushed to tell us what it was, no longer was our plates cleared the starter was on the table . it was like a conveyor belt so rushed no time between course, it’s as if they wanted you out as quick as possible i have never felt the way ever in any other restaurant i felt uncomfortable and anxious it was horrible. The food was ok not as good as it used to be will never be back which is a shame as it was always my favourite restaurant to go to in new york.
Nice moment for us
Nice place to be (to much noisy but it's a personal feeling). Everything was perfect for us. Good service level. A little bit overpriced compare to other "Star" Michelin restaurants.
Unforgettable Dining Experience
What an amazing experience! Just got back to our Manhattan hotel after spending the evening at the River Cafe, and all I can say is, Wow! Everything was spectacular, from the food, to the service to the atmosphere. First, the atmosphere. The location of the River Cafe, right on the water under the Brooklyn Bridge, overlooking the lights of the Manhattan skyline, cannot be beat. But that’s just one element. The food, cocktails and wine are equally good. While it is spendy at $195 pp for three courses, that price includes a large list of choices in the starters and mains courses, a respectable number of choices in the dessert course, and two additional small courses not listed (an amuse bouche at the start and a three-taste mini course between starter and main), plus several chocolates after dessert. The food was top notch. Due to having dental surgery not long before visiting New York, I was limited to ordering softer food. This was not a problem for the River Cafe.I ordered my favorite starter (sautéed foie gras - delicious) and then was able to order an entree sized portion of another starter, Gnocchi with Truffles, as my main. Husband ordered oysters wire caviar followed by venison. Finally for dessert we shared the goat cheese cheesecake and the Madeira flight with petite sweets. Everything was fabulous. The service is equally good. Special shout out to the sommelier Steven. Rather than push us to choose expensive full bottles of wine, he helped us choose a combination of wines by the glass and half bottles, so that we were able to have just the right wines to match our tastes while also pairing well with the food. I can highly recommend the River Cafe for a memorable dining experience in New York.

It can be under your name or a name you choose! Some reservation offers already include the AppointmentTrader Transfer Service which will transfer the reservation in to your name. If its not included you can add it on after buying the reservation for a small fee. One thing on that though: As many reservations become available at last minute, taking a reservation in someone else name is quick and great for privacy. Most reservations on AT are listed with a virtual phone number, so all you need to do is present the phone number at the hostess stand and you are good to go!
