Average food. Limited menu. Lacking
I have to agree with many others. Average at best food. Did Sunday brunch. VERY limited menu. So pay attention online because it’s accurate. No burger. No lunch possibilities. The items are fine. The bacon that you hear raves is actually a thick piece of pork belly. Fatty to the point I just asked the waiter to remove it early. Eggs well done but overall I’m not returning. It’s got hype I don’t understand
Be the first to ReplyMore good than bad, but disappointed given its reputation and rating.
A friend and I went for an early dinner and had a nice table outside. Our waiter was prompt and we started with martinis and oysters. They were both very good and our waiter was able to advise us well on our oyster selections. We had the side of tomatoes that were DELICIOUS! Super refreshing and unique. The main courses were more problematic. My friend got the swordfish. Overall it was fine, but we did not know it was going to be breaded and the fish itself was very dense, more than normal. The flavor was good. I ordered the branzino and was very disappointed. It is the whole fish including bones. The flavor was off. I didn't eat it. Trip Advisor says this is a Michelin restaurant. It is not. It is an average restaurant in a city that has many. Comparatively overpriced and the atmosphere is nothing to get excited about. The washrooms needed to be cleaned.

Fantastic brunch with friends and family! We loved the schnitzel and croque monsieur! Great atmosphere. Great service.

The food here is good if unspectacular. I noted the array of Beard awards on the wall but I’ve eaten around the world and at multi-starred places and there’s a reason the awards are all years old. Nothing was bad but nothing was new or inventive either. The service needs special mention because it was absolutely mediocre. The waitress tried to talk us out of our entrees, suggesting they were too large. Ma’am, I’ll tell you what I’m ordering and you bring it. If three people want to share three large entrees then just do it. We don’t need a lecture or guidance. When we were done, the staff kept trying to aggressively clear the table. Ok, if the place is packed with a line out the door and you need to turn the table then sure. But taking water and food off the table when you’d place is 2/3 empty isn’t appropriate in anything resembling fine dining.

The seating here is bizarre. I felt like we were in a cattle car. The food on the other hand is excellent. Shakshuka and crispy potatoes yum! I had the shrimp and grits, which was amazing. Bloody Mary comes with a side car. The The serving sizes are good. Service was also good.

I was very excited to go to this restaurant but was extremely disappointed with the food. It wasn’t bad but it wasn’t spectacular, especially for the price. I love mussels and these were by far the worst I’ve had. They smelled as if they were old. Not fishy but rotten, like fecal matter. The bread was good, a bit burnt. And the meat charcuterie is really for meat lovers, but still appetizing. My husband didn’t love his beer for the price, but the nonalcoholic options were very good. Overall I wasn’t impressed and wouldn’t go back or recommend, but it isn’t the worst of restaurants.

Been thinking of going for quiet a while but never got to it. Turns out I wasted time, as the food was really good. The chicken was great, the charcuterie was very good, and the carrots were a delight. Oysters were the best of I’ve had I a while and the dessert was top notch. I will be back.
Be the first to ReplyBreakfast Outside is nice.
The waffle is crispy like it should be. Drinks and brunch outside in good weather is the best here. I wish the airport location was still open.

The weekend atmosphere at Fulton Market and The Publican was energetic, and I liked the vibe of the restaurant. I was disappointed by much of the food, however. We shared a number of dishes, and a couple were rather good (the Brussels sprouts and the charcuterie board). The porchetta, which sounded amazing when we were perusing the menu, was nearly flavorless. Alas, the portion amounted to a single 1/2-cm slice, with some of it dry and jerky-like. My serving also had a piece of string still attached, and the pork lacked what all proper porchetta MUST have: a crispy outer layer of fat and/or skin. It was served with flavorless grits that were drowned in flavorless juice from the porchetta. The result was a rather soupy substance that tasted of nothing. The dish was garnished with some attractive peppers that were not nearly charred as much as they should have been. Indeed, there were essentially raw with slight char. I believe The Publican needs to revisit its porchetta offering. One would expect more for a dish costing $30+. We also shared the French fries with aioli, and while the aioli was tasty, the fries were under-seasoned, though they were nicely crisp with fluffy interiors. For dessert we had the apple crumble. It came to the table lukewarm (at best), and indeed some parts of it were cold. The upside is that the ice cream didn't melt as fast. Though flavorful, the dessert also disappointed. One wonders if The Publican is more style than substance, but our experience was limited to the dishes noted above. I don't feel the urge to visit again.

Great meal in a happening area. We sat outside on the patio - the inside was a bit bare and cold from air conditioning. Make sure to order their bbq carrots, beets, yellowtail crisp and chicken. All dishes were amazing and delicious. Watch out for portion sizes - they are quite generous and 1/2 chicken came on a massive plate with a ton of delicious fries.

It was so great to recently visit one of the first restaurants ever to open in the meat packing district (now called Fulton market). It was outstanding from start to finish. We were walking through the area and were lucky enough to get a table without a reservation. I would highly recommend reservations. My only complaint is we ordered too much food and it was too good. Though they were happy to supply us with some take away packaging. We had the bread plate. Delicious fresh bread but one order is enough for 4. The tomato tartine. More delicious bread with chopped heirloom tomatoes (garlic aioli on the side for the vegan). The broccoli was incredible. Can you really have incredible broccoli? Well if if you cook it perfectly, add a delicious tahini vinaigrette, a little bit of avocado and some fried quinoi you can. My partner had the sirloin steak. Perfectly cooked at medium rare. This is a must visit not to be missed!!!!

Stopped in for a quick light bite. The server was super knowledgable about the oyster selections and guided us through the menu

Pricey? Yep. Not sure why you would expect otherwise in Fulton Market. Given their “family style sharing” vibe, The Publican is a great place to go with a group and try something new. I can now say I’ve tried head cheese, decent enough. It’s a meat-centric place, but don’t sleep on the vegetables. The carrots may have been the evening’s highlight. Only downside is that parking is difficult, at best, to find. I happened to get lucky, but you can always use the valet service next door if you can’t find a spot.

Overpriced for what you get and poor service. The concept is to share so once you understand you think prices are more reasonable until you see that the portions, other than the chicken, are and in our minds they were not quite near the reflection of prices. The ribeye at $90 was not impressive and the 5 of us only had two small slices each as of meat but it was advertised as 320oz! Quality of food was nothing special. Would not recommend and will not go back.
Be the first to ReplyAwesome charcuterie & service
Let’s start with staff: awesome. Fast, knowledgeable & funny. They know their product & assist you with solid choices. The food is based on meats - the Pig. Feeling like a German restaurant, the options go well with beer. And great beers they have. This place is seemingly set up like a barn, and it works well. Big group, huge group, or couples - it’s made for it all. Plus, buy a round of beers for the kitchen staff for $10. This place is worth checking out, as well as visiting each time we come to Chicago. Enjoy!

I was excited to finally eat here because of the great reviews and longevity of it in Chicago. It wasn’t as spectacular as we thought it would be. I had a tequila drink and my friends had old fashions. My husband doesn’t drink and loved that they had non alcoholic cocktails with Kentucky 74.
We wanted to start with bread, but they were sold out (Sunday night). The oysters were good, nothing different with them. The half charcuterie was pretty good. There was way more bread than meat. There wasn’t a lot of variety-spicy, rich, the head cheese and pork pie were both rich.
For mains we got the half porchetta and steak. There was way more vegetables than actual meat. The porchetta was rubbery and tough. The polenta, sauce, and vegetables were good. The steak was cold, but cooked nicely. The bitter chicory was great with it.
The highlight of the night was the vegetables. The cauliflower had a nice creamy base with picked onions and pine nuts. The Brussels sprouts were also great.
To finish, my friends split the bread pudding and it was super tiny. The ice cream was bigger than the bread pudding.
Overall we were disappointed. We thought it would be more “meat focused.” It wasn’t bad, but we weren’t super excited!
Bad experience
Infernally loud music
Wine in regular drinking glasses
Lousy first seating option (not uncommon)
Unnecessary add on sales of side dishes
Unannounced covid extra charge
DO NOT GO THERE
Wonderful food, ‘bus’ person anxious to clear our table
Great place to try different entrees and share and an extensive beer menu to explore! There were 3 in our party and we shared the apple salad, bread tray with butter, mussels and the porchetta. The bread and the porchetta were fabulous! The mussels were a bit too salty for me but they came with a small loaf of bread so that helped. Our waitress was terrific. The only annoying thing was an employee who kept trying to remove our plates before we were done. The person took my beer mug before I was done!

Great place to hang outside. Fantastic waitress. Limited but excellent quality of food. Large family-style portions....beware. Will go back!!
Be the first to ReplyAmazing meal outside on a beautiful June evening
The fresh food from The Publican was wonderful, and we would love to go back one day. The dishes are made to be shared - and we enjoyed sharing the charcuterie tray, fresh peaches, and the bread with three dips for our first course, then beet salad and mussels for round two. My daughter and I each ordered dessert, but had a hard time sharing that course! Yum. The whole dining experience was memorable, and we highly recommend trying out The Publican.

We enjoyed the good beers and some very interesting charcuterie. Best thing was the closed street and the traffic-less seating

This place has a cool ambiance and style to it. The service was fantastic and the food was good. The is a fancier take on breakfast but even the hearty eaters in our group were satisfied!
