The Pig - on the beach Swanage Reviews from The Last Year
The Pig in a poke!!
Booked a table several months ago for Bank Holiday Saturday. My husband and son had just had a birthday and one coming up respectively. The party consisted of my husband, myself, my son and his partner along with our two grandchildren 20 months and four years old. It was a lovely sunny day and we were looking forward to sitting down at our table. However the conservatory dining room was full and we were shown to a table in the dark gloomy overflow room? No one else was in the room. - another couple who turned up an hour into our stay took one look and said they would rather eat outside!! They offered us a seat outside in the blazing sun with no sun protection! I have a blood cancer and take chemotherapy drugs so I cannot sit in the sun. We had no choice but to take the table all whilst listening to all the laughter and chatter in the conservatory. We had to ask for water for our table, no bread was ever offered!! We spent most of our time watching the serving staff whisk through past our table! At one point we had to move our chair so that they could access their wine store!! Three had a starter, four mains, four beers and two alcoholic drinks, one child’s main course. We were then persuaded to go out on the terrace for pudding which we did - and then waited and waited for someone to serve us. Finally we decided there was nothing on the menu that appealed to us so we had some petit fours with 2 coffees and a tea. Cost over £300 value nil, service nil! I have been to the Pig on number occasions when under previous owner always a joy and great service. Not now! Nearly all the servers looked like they were under 21 and not bothered! I won’t be going again! Far nicer restaurants out there to spend £300!!
Stunning food, stunning location
Great food, great service (thank you Freddy), beautiful location and attention to detail. Our first visit and won't be our last. Great food, great service (thank you Freddy), beautiful location and attention to detail. Our first visit and won't be our last.
Many good things - too many far from good
On the positive, our room was great, good bed, excellent shower, expertly serviced - the staff almost without exception are excellent - the location and the whole environment is good - but as with the other Pigs we have stayed at the Restaurant is not the high point - that said breakfast was excellent, dinner less so - the main issue is overbooking which must be a company policy - despite having firm bookings we and other residents suffered significant waits with lots of apologies being handed out - why, at an expensive hotel like this do they allow so many non residents to book dinner making the experience for residents quite poor - they definitely overbook - to cap it all some items on the not extensive menu were unavailable by the time we ordered - other issues, but that's enough grumbling - will we be back - NO
As if they were surprised to be busy
Second time I've been and the positives are big : the view, the garden, the laid back atmosphere and some of the food. The house wine was great. The negatives... It was a Saturday in a bank hol weekend but our table of four had to wait a long time for drinks, a long time to be seated, we asked twice for bread, the petit fours arrived before the coffees. OK these are details but when you pay over £100 a head you expect it to be better. The pigeon and pork were also too salty. Individually the staff were great but we didn't feel looked after. It felt as if the staff were collectively surprised they were so busy, which presumably they weren't. Next time as a four we'll eat at the Banks Arms and save £300.
Full of Promise but in truth a great disapointment.
We were reluctant to place this review but felt that as we had been given a voucher from our family, we decided to book a table at this restaurant on Easter Sunday. We discovered that the drinks were very expensive compared to other restaurants including the Jetty in Southampton. For example, the house wine was priced at £11 per glass. Our voucher was for £50 and we paid £139 in addition. Our meal was not exceptional and certainly not worth the expense, especially the dessert. We have had far better at other restaurants for the same money. We have now embarassingly told family members not to give us vouchers for the Pig again. We expected a wonderfu; experience and the disappointment suffered has made us determined not to visit any Pig restaurant again. We not only expected a wonderful experience but also value for money. Verdict: Grossly over priced, no table cloths.cheap wooden tables and having to ask for a fish knife to eat fish was the last straw.
Lovely two night stay
Lovely hotel in a fabulous location. Great walks in the vicinity including a lovely walk all the way along the beach to the ferry point to Sandbanks at the end of the bay. Room very well appointed and we found the bed very comfortable. Really enjoyed the dinner on the two nights we were there. Fabulous locally sourced produce including from their own kitchen garden. The restaurant staff make it. I loved the casual but efficient vibe. The only negative really is the price - it is very expensive and for the price you would expect breakfast - at least continental - to be included. That said we had a really lovely time.
A wonderful place for a family celebration
Birthday lunch for my father’s 80th. 10 of us, including two children, had the fortune of eating in The Roundhouse. The food was absolutely fantastic : the tobacco onions are a must! The children’s menu was really appreciated. However the thing that stood out was the exceptional service. The team were kind, informative, and extremely discrete. Huge thanks to Connor for his perfect wine recommendations - I would come back just to hear him talk about wine. Also thanks to Samuel for his great service, for taking such care of us, and being so careful with regards to food intolerance. Plus thanks to the whole team working there today. A perfect place for such a celebration. We’ll be back!
Birthday lunch
We ate lunch here as a birthday treat. We had also booked on the Friday Kitchen Garden tour beforehand, which was an interesting hour with the gardener. Having seen the mushrooms growing in their special room, we couldn’t resist having some as a ‘0 mile’ starter from the ‘25 mile menu’. A lovely meal, delightful service - and although we hadn’t mentioned the birthday in advance, my husband was presented with a ‘Happy Birthday’ plate complete with granita and a piggy biscuit. A very nice touch. Thanks to all.
Expensive, better to be a lunch or dinner guest as opposed to overnight stay
arrived for a 2 night stay at £370 per night on the Saturday at 1pm, car park full with day / lunch visitors. No provision made for guests with a room. Was told to go away and come back a little later! Our room was the 2nd one up from basic, was pretty small but very nicely done, as was the entire hotel, super clean and presented really well. However, the rooms are a little crammed in, and add this walls / noisy stairscases to that its not great. We had a noisy child in the room next to us, who was on the landing most mornings so no lay in's for us! We did ask at reception ref ear plugs., they only had one set spare. Would we go again ? yes 100 % but only for lunch, the rooms are too expensive, and there is very little gain for being a overnight guest, versus a visitor for lunch or dinner.
Relaxing
We had the beach huts- which were charming. Everyone very friendly and food delicious This is our once a year post Xmas treat - after hosting Xmas for large family This was my least favourite of the PIG family I was disappointed when treatments all got cancelled too.
It’s more about the view than the food
For the view and setting it was lovely. I imagine it would be lovely to stay and wake up and overlook the sea. The outside space is great with kids. We sat outside for the wood fired oven. However, at £18 for a flatbread, I was expecting freshly made dough. It was pre-packaged and two options of toppings (I don’t mind that there was only 2, it means it’s speedy which is great). It just didn’t wow us in any way food wise. We wouldn’t return. Maybe the main restaurant is much better…
Surprise costs
To explain our situation, we came into the Pig with a voucher we had been gifted. We were carefully calculating the price of our meal so that we could choose our options wisely and try as much as possible. My partner and I ordered the piggly bits off the main menu anticipating that the pork belly bites and salami fritters would come as one plate. Nevertheless we were charged £9.90 for 2 plates one of pork belly bites and one of salami fritters. I wouldn’t have minded if this was made clear to us however, I felt like the menu was somewhat secretive about this. Upon receiving our bill we were also charged for the still water which came in an open bottle. When the waitress offered still water I presumed this was tap water that you would normally receive complimentary in other restaurants so was shocked that we were charged £3 for this. Another surprise on the bill was a 12.5% service charge. I felt like the service charge was not warranted. Many staff were wondering around and congregated by the till area in groups of 3 for “quiet chats”. One waitress slyly slipped past and took my napkin away without asking and another was dismissive after I asked for the left over money from my voucher to be returned to me in voucher form with the suggestion being that I took home some “piggly bits” instead. The final disappointment was that upon leaving the restaurant we found out that our coats which staff had offered to hang up were stored in an open hallway for anybody to access at their leisure. If we had known this would’ve been the case, we would have kept our belongings with us. I would like to say that the food overall was adequate however with the combination of everything else which happened, what was supposed to be a lovely evening out ended up feeling like we’d been let down. For these reasons I won’t be returning to the pig.
Prices going up and service and quality getting worse
I have been to a number of the pigs and unfortunately this was one on my worse stays. The actual hotel is lovely, great location on the beach front. However the service was lacking and often felt there weren’t enough staff on hand, and when there was you were lucky to be there. Rooms were not fully stocked (for example loo roll!), front desk not keen to help, restaurant food was over priced and cocktails uninventive. All individually may feel small issues, but when you are paying £500 per night and breakfast isn’t even included you would expect and can probably find better!
Really bad coffee
Was really looking forward to a decent latte after a long walk thinking it’s ‘The pig’ and plus it’s costing £4.50 unfortunately it was the worst coffee I’ve ever had.(burnt milk bitter coffee scolding hot) delivered in a takeaway cup when drinking in, offered sugar with nothing to stir it with. The only advice I can give is employ actual baristas or provide good barista training…. Thank you for the swift refund after we had one sip the staff were super friendly and accommodating.
Great service and views but disaapointing and very expensive food.
This Pig has transformed a sleepy Dorset manor house to its own very pleasing corporate image. The views to the Old Harry Rocks on a sunny day from the lovely gardens, that include a separate bar area serving pizza's, are excellent. Inside the restaurant ambience is comfortable, albeit junk shop furnishings may not appeal to everyone. The star of the show were the great, numerous and attentive staff, albeit it is hard distinguish them in their ultra casual attire from guests. There were even two gardeners attending the kitchen garden - explaining why it was so imaculate! Turning to the menu, we both enjoyed an excellent rosemary bread with our starter sardines. For mains we had a good pork loin dish, although the side chips were not fresh cooked. The sausages and mash dish should have been returned as the skins were rubbery and impossible to cut. Overall, the service was 4* or 5*, but the food and value (everything being overpriced) only merrits 2*. The two of us paid £120 for 2 coarses and a drink each. Sadly, we note that the management do not respond to Trip Advisor comments, indicating to us that they are not interested in customer feedback.
Sadly overpriced, disappointing food
We stayed on 21st February for one night. Have to agree with previous reviews. Amazing location. Cosy, intimate atmosphere. Staff very attentive and polite. Breakfast was great, good quality products and plenty of it. However, the evening meal was a terrible let down. We both had pork which was just very average. The menu was very limited. We were charged £3.00 for tap water! Our bill for two courses and sides came to £156.00. We felt it was very over priced for the quality of the food we ate. We'd certainly stay here again but would eat elsewhere for our evening meal. I gave 4 stars because of the venue not the food!
