Stunning meal
Another excellent meal, we sat at the bar and shared oysters followed by the red prawns and burrata from the new menu. Both were absolutely stunning. Already looking forward to the next visit
Be the first to ReplyUnderwhelming
Lobster was under cooked on the shellfish platter Our waitress informed the kitchen who then proceeded to stare at us through the window!! Smoked cod roe is far too over powering for those little bits of toast. Nduja butter ruins a perfectly good scallop, again too much! The smoked salmon was amazing, shame about the packet bilinis. *Eyeroll* The Sunday menu, is a bit disappointing; fish dishes taken off and replaced with meat! What’s the point in calling it a seafood restaurant to then take all of seafood off? Chips came with most things, it was all a bit lazy, not really thought through menu which in its self is disappointing! Overall, it could have been better, it could have been worse. If you want a dozen oysters and a bottle of fizz, then this is your place. If not go then go to the fish and chip shop.
Be the first to ReplyLast course was surrounded by flies. When questioned about it, staff said it was something they control.
Last course was surrounded by flies and staff said they could not do anything about it. Said it was something to do with the fruit. We couldn’t eat the food fully and nothing came off the bill. So disappointed as I’ve had lovely times here and recommend this place to many friends. It was a Mother’s Day meal that was spoiled.
Be the first to ReplySmall overpriced portions
Really disappointed in my meal. Had a starter of smoked haddock scotch egg which was small but nice. Had fish & chips main at £25 which was a fish goujon with a few small chips. Another meal in our party was the Hake main that was no bigger than a normal starter. Left the restaurant hungry and had a takeaway on the way home.
Be the first to ReplyBe careful of strict cancellation penalties
We had a poorly child and were unable to make our reservation. Called restaurant 5hrs ahead of reservation to explain situation and asked to reschedule. Was told not possible and we’d be penalised £30pp. They took £120 from my card. I understand t’s & c’s and restaurants do not want empty tables as it costs them money, but taking £120 from a customer who has the decency to call ahead 5hrs prior so they could resell the table on a Saturday evening doesn’t sit right with me. I even asked if they would half the penalty charge and i’d reschedule. Bottom line is no one wins, I really wanted to try this restaurant, I’ll now never book this restaurant as a matter of principle, and they now get a bad review.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent birthday occasion
We visited for my 34th Birthday yesterday and had a great time. My partner is coeliac and she was catered for excellently, leaving so much choice that the attentive waiting staff had to return to the table 3 times in order to get an order out of us. I am pescatarian and the food on offer was perfect for me. The wine list is also varied and reasonably priced. We sat in the restaurant area which was overlooked by the kitchen behind a window, and it was nice to be able to see the food we had ordered being prepared in front of us. After dinner we moved to the bar area and enjoyed a drink. The bartenders were able to provide us with cocktails that weren't listed in the cocktail menu too. The selection of beers was also good to see, Estrella, Vedett IPA and Vedett Pilsner. All bottled and no draught which, if i had one negative point, this would be it, but it didn't bother me particularly. I also thought that the pricing was excellent value for money. The portions were perfectly sized and the "snacks" which we had as starters, were more than adequate. You could have 2 or 3 of these each and that would satisfy your appetite i'm sure. We will be visiting again and taking our 6 year old daughter next time. An excellent night out.
Be the first to ReplyWow wonderful!
We visited yesterday for my birthday. Wow! Fabulous,Faultless, Delicious everything you want from a restaurant! Smart elegant decor. Professional staff everywhere. Wine list fab. If you don't love fish there's roast beef which was superb. Fish fantastic!
Be the first to ReplyPoor value for money
The restaurant was quiet for a Saturday early evening. Nice service, but the food was not value for money by any means. Happy to pay for quality, but the portions were so small - having paid £140 - we both left feeling hungry. Much better options & wouldn't return.
Be the first to ReplyChance visit, blew us away.
After matinee show at NIA we were literally wandering around Birmingham looking for somewhere to et and had decided where, when we stumbled across the Oyster Club. Having just become a big fan of Oysters I was keen to have some more. Pleasantly surprised with very nice interior and welcome from the staff I was shocked to learn the restaurant had been open for so long. Sadly the Oysters were not available ( Sunday evening - so maybe a "thing" in winter). However, a little treat with some caviar and two absolutely beautiful dishes ( hake and halibut) and we were more than happy. The food was incredible, the quality of the presentation, the taste and the quality of the fish cooking is some of the best ever. Seriously impressed and excited to find such an amazing place right in the middle of town.
Be the first to ReplyA little disappointed.
We`ve been here quite a few times now, and keep coming back as a treat, my wife doesn`t eat oysters so indulges me occaisionally. We booked a table last night (Saturday) and to be honest I was not overly impressed. To me, the place looks a little tired, like it has not been decorated for years, the waiters were all in scruffy jeans and trainers and I think a couple of them must be between irons given the crumpled shirts. I appreciate many people today don`t really bother so much but at a premium restaurant, smart staff and decor only adds to the overall experience, or in this case detracts from it, it just looked unhygienic. They were all very pleasant I should add. As to the food/drink, I ordered a Belgan IPA, £6 for a small bottle which tasted like an Asda Budget Beer. A £40 bottle of wine, which was just about ok. My oysters were really good, my wife had fish and chips which looked like a childs portion, thin fish and around 8 chips for which we paid £25.00. It was cooked well but I would have expected much better quality given how simple it is to make this dish special. To finish we had the cheese platter which was a little uninspiring. I appreciate places have been struggling recently and people are perhaps not so demanding or educated when it comes to food but this really is not what I expected or appreciate. Unless I read improvements have been made I would not go again, which is disappointing.
Be the first to ReplyFirst time at the Oyster Club
First time at the Oyster Club and the first time at a Michelin rated restaurant. Got to say the atmosphere was casual and relaxed , the staff were extremely friendly and helpful, especially when were seeking advice on the menu.
The food was stunning, it did literally melt in your mouth, I have tasted squid in different countries but never tasted squid as good served here.
We were a party of four, we all had different mains, cod, dover sole, monkfish tail and halibut - all were excellent.
Desert was lemon tart with rhubarb sorbet - melted in mouth time again,
I thought that fine dinning might be slightly pretentious - this was not, great place, lovely atmosphere and staff will definitely be back again - next time seafood platter is on the cards
Best Sunday Lunch around
Wonderful Sunday lunch as always. The meat is wonderful quality cooked to perfection, cauliflower cheese the best ever and perfect veg and roast potatoes. Horseradish sauce is amazing too. Staff are very professional and highly knowledgeable. Service second to none . Our favourite restaurant
Be the first to ReplyFood is superb!
We really enjoyed our evening! The food is superb, all the fish very fresh and perfectly cooked. The prices adequate to the quality.
The only drawback was the service, as although the restaurant was not busy, we had to ask for our wine to be topped up and another bottle of water. However, the staff is knowledgeable.
Will definitely return!
Continues to keep high standards
Standards remain high
Great food enough choices to satisfy most taste, lovely front of house staff attentive without being intrusive. Standard of food high very tasty, I had the skate wing which seems to be a cut of fish many chefs get wrong... This was cooked to perfection!. Reasonable choices of wine by the glass (would be nice for a small crafe option) for a lunch time meal a bargain in my book.
Mothers day lunch
Excellent service and ambience The food was very tasty. I had the haddock scotch egg it was really tasty. It was followed by the crab which was yummy. We sat near the kitchen and could see the chefs working it was interesting.
The waiting staff were knowledgeable and attentive.
Dinner for two
We had high hopes for this restaurant, which quickly dissipated as the evening wore on.
Firstly, we were not keen on the way the waitress felt she had to explain the menu to us - it was all pretty clear, and we are quite able to follow a menu ourselves - we do it all the time, so did not need this condescension.
I have to say the food was superb, if overpriced - beautiful turbot with clams, a side of smoked butter greens (small) - and my husband had a very good cod dish.
It was when the other tables in our section of the restaurant had left that things went rapidly downhill - staff started cleaning and rearranging the tables, chatting loudly among themselves as they did so - we could also see into the kitchens, and it was the same story - surfaces and floors being wiped to prepare for closing time.
Not at all conducive to a relaxed evening out.
We left quite deflated - such a disappointment.
A lovely Tuesday lunch…
We enjoyed lunch here recently… a glass of pink fizz on arrival… the tempura oysters were delicious followed by the set lunch menu which is amazing value for money.. we have been before and sat downstairs but actually this time we sat upstairs and preferred it.. we arrived fairly early without a reservation glad we did as it was pretty busy when we left. Good service from the team.
Be the first to ReplyA disappointing experience
We ate lunch here. It’s a nice stylish place and the staff are very helpful. Beware if you are sitting upstairs that you are blasted with cold air every time anyone enters through the doors which is not pleasant. Not sure what can be done about that but is an issue when it’s cold outside.
We found the food disappointing and would gave the following comments:
1) smoked haddock scotch egg. Well cooked egg wise but strangely lacking in any flavour of smoked haddock
2) Scallop starter. This was shocking. It’s £8.50 per scallop. My wife had two. You might think that for 17 pounds you would get something spectacular. Far from it. She received 2 TINY scallops (no bigger than a queen scallop) and that was it. They weren’t even particularly tasty or well cooked. I don’t think we have ever seen such a poor scallop dish and that is something we order on a regular basis.
3) Cod main and monkfish main were both nice and well cooked
4) Mushroom risotto was awful. I would avoid at all cost. If you tasted it blind you would not have known it was a mushroom dish. Had an overwhelming taste of what I think was tarragon. There was also something sweet in the background that was just unpleasant.
5) not a fan if the baby leek salad with pancetta as pancetta was chopped so small it added nothing to the dish and was actually very difficult to get off the plate
I won’t be returning to The Oyster Bar and I would advise anyone who is looking for anything other than oysters to think about Adam Stokes main restaurant around the corner.
I would also add that I was contacted by Mr Stokes who was genuinely disappointed with a personal review I sent him and wished to understand how things might be improved. That suggests to me that my experience may not be indicative of regular problems at this restaurant.
Sunday treat night
Second time visiting here and it lived upto it’s expectations again . The restaurant was much quieter than a Saturday night but staff was very attentive and service was spot on as usual . I had the deep fried prawns to start as did my husband which they was able to make gluten free for me which is always a winner , they arrived piping hot with a fab chilli sauce , great size too and not over cooked and chewie which some restaurants tend to do . We then shared a fish platter which again was amazing but our eyes were much too big for our belly and we ended up taking some of the crab and lobster claws home with us . The chips as a side are again amazing as was the lavender lemonade I had .
No puddings this time round as we was completely stuffed but we really do love the food here , it’s fresh tasty and the staff are always so lovely ! Well worth a trip
Ms
We went to the oyster club as it had Been recommended to us, for a joint birthday . I shared the seafood platter with the birthday girl and it was awful . The clams we're gritty the crab was poorly crack (which I ended up cutting myself on , they should have brought us a cloth and hammer to do it ourselves) the lobster was no more than your average 15-20 pounds small lobster this was no maine lobster which is what I had expected for the price they charge. the crab was also filthy it had not been cleaned it still bad barnacles attached, grit sand and dirt all still present and as I said poorly cracked . Everything was bland I make seafood alot so was really looking forward to having it made for me but unfortunately that was all FROZEN cheap rubbish (seafood restaurant with frozen seafood?) They left it to defrost in water which has then drained all the natural flavour out of so we paid all that money to eat cardboard seafood . I had one oyster and that was it. If it wasn't 2 of my sisters birthday I would have had the manger over for a refund because that was fit for the bin only the nicest thing on there was the mussels but then that's because the they are bought cooked and frozen they did nothing to them the cravettes were disgusting no flavour and also still had the waste running down the middle so they weren't cleaned either you would think for the price they want you to pay they would have at least cleaned it! I didn't want to make fuss because of the event so I told them to bag it up I'll take it home and try to save it. So I paid to do it myself at home for 4 times the price if I had bought them myself . The service was horrendous 😫 the owner Alex himself kept look/staring at our table whilst walking back and forth to shout at the kitchen staff ( in CLEAR view of all the diners I think he forgot he was standing infront of a clear screen to the kitchen.) aswell as other staff members making it very uncomfortable for us. The only pleasant thing about this experience was our waiter he was excellent. This was not fine dining there not a snow crab in sight we had brown English common crab it's £6 in the supermarket I never buy it because its trash mussels clams oysters and cravettes are the cheaper seafood options too if your going to do that to people at least clean it and don't destroy the delicate flavours honestly I'm so disappointed I was very underwhelmed by the whole thing . I and my party will not be going back ever ... disgusting filthy bland disappointing food I will not be recommending either.
