Worst French onion soup in the world.
Not a real French restaurant, please avoid to save yourself money and go elsewhere

I would recommend reservations since the place was packed on Wednesday night. We had a reservation but I wonder if it was possible to walk in without one. The service is nice and the place is classy. The food portion was small in comparison to their large plates. Overall a good experience.

Perfect spot for brunch or lunch in the Tribeca area of Manhattan. Best eggs benedict I've had in a long time and the profiteroles were especially delicious. Customer service was top notch. Our waiter was very attentive and helpful for this ol' first timer. The establishment is a classy, casual environment with beautiful decor and an eclectic feel. I could see why this restaurant has been around for so long. One of the bests.

If you are too lazy to read the Odeon's history from the excellent Vanity Fair article ("Live From Tribeca", Frank Digiacomo, Sep 1 2008), I paraphrase: As seen in vintage SNL reruns or the cover of Jay McInerney's "Bright Lights, Big City" (whose editor assumed the Odeon was fictional), the 29-inch, Art Deco reddish-orange neon letters represent the death of Studio 54, with a cool warmth that contradicted the cocaine, casual sex, and cash-fueled 80s to follow. Filmmaker Amos Poe said if the Odeon was a Beatle, she's be the Quiet one. The Bakelite skyline from an old Woolworth's and curvaceous, mirrored 1930s Deco bar were the highlights of the dark, postmodern movie-set-cum-dining room, with food from nouvelle cuisine pioneer Michel Guérard, all set in what authors Tom Wolfe described as "SoHo's Cotton Club" or what McInerney described as a "no-man's-land...where subcultures thrive." "It is old. It is new", McInerney would say. It was self-conscious without being pretentious, and it was retro without being kitcshy, or in the words of Lorne Michaels, "It had sophistication and it had French fries." Warhol, Basquiat, De Niro, Cher, Aykroyd and Belushi, who had his first creme brulee here, might agree. In the words of James Signorelli, king of SNL commercial parodies, it quickly became "the end of café society and the beginning of Short-Attention-Span Theater". Rediscovered in the highly profitable 1990s, Amos Poe reports, "It started out white-hot and transitioned into a classic. It's as if Pamela Anderson became Greta Garbo." My experience at the dark attractive bar was excellent, eating an ice cream sundae, not realizing all ice creams are house made and all-natural. Be warned: the mint ice cream tastes like actual mint, like straight out of a garden. Based on the article "Live From Tribeca", I would say The Odeon used to be Bill Murray from the 70s and now it is "Bill Murray in his 70s"

Came here with a friend visiting from CA and decided she was my excuse to check this place out. When we arrived, it was packed, and we were originally told we'd need to wait. Within minutes, though, the host managed to squeeze us in. I'm glad they did. We each ordered: Phony Negroni and Ginger Kick - both delicious French Onion Soup - reason alone to visit Mixed Green Salad - I'd skip it Atlantic Cod - actually really good, would honestly get again French Fries - perfect Chocolate Pudding - not the best dessert I've ever had... but still dessert. Service was good but definitely rushed (probably partially our own doing by showing up without a reservation) and she certainly lost interest when we only ordered mocktails. All in all, I'd still come back to try a few new things and repeat a few others.

Food was okay, it's a classic restaurant and NY site and that is the primary appeal. The food tasted frozen and the drinks were fine. The managers seemed aggressive with the staff and angry

We rolled into The Odeon on a Wednesday night with no reservations, and this place was packed! The gracious staff advised us that they should be able to fit us in, in about 20 minutes. So we ordered a glass of wine from the bar and huddled up in the corner until we were called. We ordered the steak tartar, sun choke ravioli, and a side salad. Everything was perfect, including the art deco decor. I would definitely recommend this restaurant if you're in the area.
Be the first to ReplyThe hostess was so rude - elitist for no reason.
We are regulars but because we were dressed casually today we were treated like we were second class. The waitress was great but the hostess was terrible.
Be the first to ReplyI enjoyed a fantastic lunch at the Odeon on a weekday.
The food was superb, the service exceptional, and the ambiance very pleasant. The kitchen brought out my stake to the table which was a nice surprise and it made me feel special, adding a delightful touch to my experience.

I've been here a few times for drinks / food the burgers are very good, the dirty martinis are my favorite! I love this place the inside decor brings me back to old New York which I love!! The service is great they are very attentive.
Be the first to ReplyGreat service for a table of 6 people.
Waitstaff was very pleasant. The vibe of the restaurant was nothing that would knock your socks off in terms of being overly anything- but that was a great part about it. It's bustling, busy and has no music, given the noise level of conversation fills the air with a hum. The food was solid, and here's what I'd recommend. Appetizers: calamari and steak tartare. Mains: strip steak was amazing, burger was OK- nothing crazy. Fries are delicious. Dessert: toffee pudding, crème brûlée, and profiteroles were to die for. Don't skip on dessert here people! Overall a good experience, nothing overdone, flashy or anything. Just a good old bite to eat in a busy environment with great service.

This is a tightly cramped space with a fun atmosphere and attentive service. The prices for the area are reasonable except that the food is pretty cheaply done. A lot of very simple recipes here and they don't really pull them off. The French onion soup was bland and the cheese burnt. The lemonade was sour. The entrees were underwhelming. Cocktails were good, though the bar was limited in selection.

The staff is really nice and the place is iconic, but the food is meh. Very expensive for what it is, but you feel cool being in there and you may get a potential celebrity sighting. I'll be back because it's easy, but it's nothing to really write home about... they definitely could step up their game..

We waited maybe 15 minutes for a table - we spilt the famous grilled cheese and it was delicious! Also can't recommend the buffalo chicken dumpling appetizer enough - its amazing! tad bit pricey for the meal but overall worth it.

This place is a pretty mixed bag, unfortunately that seems more common for restaurants these days. The service is atrocious, we waited 40 minutes for a reservation...unacceptable. The wait staff was ok as much of our food took a while. The food itself was excellent and almost made up for the packed tables, loud restaurant, and bad service.

It was my first time trying this place, I called to make reservations for dinner. It was quite busy when we arrived and the space was tight. I was surprised a French place didn't have bread service. The server got straight to our drinks. I was a little disappointed there, so we order some appetizer, oysters and onion soup. Food was good, I had their skirt steak with fries, medium rare, and my partner had the lobster sandwich. I was a-little pulled back by the change of servers, constantly within the hour. I guess the shifts was being change or something, we were introduced in the middle of our dining three times. In the end I wasn't even sure who was our server.
Be the first to ReplyHad a great brunch at The Odeon.
Subtracted a star because I ordered Eggs Benedict with the Hollandaise sauce on the side instead of on top, and they forgot and did not offer to remake it.

1130 reservations and they were packed! Our waitress took great care of us and wasn't overbearing or trying to turn the table. Steak tartare was some of the best I've had. My partner had champagne and i got a bloody mary. The croque monsier was amazing; i added an egg but it wasn't necessary. My partner had the breakfast club sandwich; must have been a full avocado on it; very good. Five minute walk to her condo so we will definitely be back!
Be the first to ReplyBeen coming here for years.
Probably more now for the nostalgia than the food (and certainly not for the prices...). Portions have shrunk but the scene can be fun. Met my wife here so will always hold a special place in my heart.
Be the first to ReplyFrench toast was excellent.
It was made with a brioche and lightly toasted - so flavorful - not your usual heavily soaked French toast. The French onion soup was also outstanding and perfectly balanced. Will definitely be back.

We have tried a few things but overall food was ok, nothing extraordinary. I liked chicken dumplings, the rest was average.

My girl and I were wandering around Tribeca when we passed The Odeon. The Odeon has been around forever yet we've never tried it. We walked in unreserved and we were seated immediately. The space looks dated and is in need of some TLC. The service was excellent and our food was very good. They have some very cool cocktails as well. No complaints at all. Feeling good!
Be the first to ReplySeems like everyone else got a better experience than me.
I paid $14 for a "mixed greens" salad to go which is basically a $5 bag of mixed greens in a plastic container ... however they couldn't even take the time to wash the lettuce.

The Odeon, much like Balthasar, is a New York institution and it never disappoints. Whether you come for lunch or dinner, whatever you order will arrive promptly, perfectly plated and tasting exactly as you expected. It's quality and consistency and for me, that's the best in terms of classical restaurant experience. It's not experimental, it's not budget friendly but it's a solid, consistently professional, very polished outcomes and I'm here for it!!!
