Perfect mid-week lunch
We popped in to the Ninth for a mid-week lunch, and had the three course set menu. I had the sardine spaghetti to start, the duck with tarbais beans and cavolo nero for main, and gruyère alpage cheese to finish. I particularly enjoyed the main, but all dishes were delicious and perfectly portioned. The staff were super attentive and friendly, and the atmosphere was relaxed. Certainly recommended!
Be the first to ReplyGood value set lunch
The Ninth had been on our "to visit" list for a while and we had the set lunch option (£30 for two courses or £35 for three courses). The choice is quite limited, just two of each course, so it may be restrictive for some diners. The sardine spaghetti starter was lovely as was the artichoke salad and both mains ( duck leg and roast pumpkin) were nice. We both had a nice piece of gruyere for dessert. All the food tastes and looks good and is quite inventive. There is a short well chosen wine list with plenty of choice that won't break the bank. Service is efficient and friendly. With a bottle of Gruner Veltliner, teas and coffees the bill was just below £150 for two which we thought was pretty good value for money. We would certainly go back. As to whether a Michelin star is warranted person I think the jury is still out!
Be the first to ReplyThe ninth wouldn’t be in my top ten
Came for dinner and had the tasting menu. While the presentation and ingredients were a of very high standard, most of the dishes were looked a lot better than they tasted. The duck was excellent and the desert was very enjoyable but everything else was rather underwhelming. Service was ok and it wasn’t very busy though that was fine as we were a table of 4.
Be the first to ReplySo nearly there!
Last night we went with friends for an anniversary. The food was good but we felt it lacked something, the soughbread was average, the vegetarian pumpkin dish was average. Ibérico pork was very good and so was the fish. The staff were nice and friendly but could have been slicker, we waited 40 minutes and then had to ask them to take our order. So nearly there!
Be the first to ReplyNOISY AS HELL
I go to Michelin star restaurants for the food, but also the calm atmosphere. Food was good (although not as refined as other Michelin starred restaurants I've been to) but for the price it was acceptable. The biggest problem was the NOISE! There was a big birthday party happening in the room next to us. Apparently this is a regular occurrence. They were so loud for our entire meal, singing and applauding. Not the calm atmosphere my friends and I were looking for, and certainly not deserving of a Michelin star. They should have kept these guests to themselves away from earshot of other guests - the flimsy curtain did nothing to dampen the racket! Kicking myself for not asking for something off the bill - was not offered despite my chat with the manager.
Be the first to ReplyOk but there's better on Charlotte Street
There's nothing wrong with The Ninth, it was a perfectly pleasant meal but there was nothing outstanding about it either and given the prices, I expected more and maybe high expectations were the problem. The decor and ambience is really nice and the staff make you feel very welcome. We chose a number of dishes to share though I'd warn people to order slightly more than we did as the dishes aren't large. Between the two of us we ordered the crispy artichoke with aoli, truffle pasta, cauliflower with walnuts, hispy cabbage, dover sole and the pain perdu. The artichoke, truffle pasta and pain perdu were all very good and we'd both strongly recommend them. The Cauliflower, Hispy Cabbage and Dover Sole were all a bit 'meh'. Nothing wrong with them, well cooked, but nothing remarkable either. I'm an average cook and I think I could probably replicate the dishes to a similar standard. Whilst it's a great setting and the food is good, it wasn't outstanding and where we were left disappointed was that the prices are very high relative to the quality. Generally when we spend £200+ on a meal for two at a restaurant, we walk away with a few dishes that we'll remember for some time but at The Ninth, I think we'll forget it relatively quickly.
Be the first to ReplyLate christmas gift, waited long time to try Jun tanaka’s food
I’d waited a long time to come to ‘The Ninth’ and try Jun tanaka’s food. We were given a warm welcome and the nice lady on the front desk put out shopping bags away before showing us our table… The waitress then took our order and soon after the barmen came with a unordered glass of wine, I started to think ( no know have I made wrong choice for dinner), however that was quickly rectified, as waitress misunderstood my wine selection, and entrees soon arrived, partridge for me & crispy artichoke for my wife, both were delicious excited for next dishes… I chose a pasta course next which was the prawn spaghetti , again very tasty esp the Red prawns, my Italian wife agreed and we shared it… Mains soon followed with cauliflower & pomegranate, walnuts for my wife and the Roe deer for me, mine was excellent as was the side of potatoes, wife was disappointed however ‘florettes of cauliflower’, as opposed to the cauliflower steak that she was expecting, as she ordered this as a main but clearly it was a side dish… perhaps misunderstood waitress issue ( who knows ) this didn’t put a damper on dessert the famous ‘pain perdu’ …. Restaurant overall was similar to an Italian Trattoria as a-pose to french fine dining restaurant that I thought but none the less enjoyable…. The bill £219 for 2
Be the first to ReplyDisappointing tasting menu
We had chef's choice menu, which comprised nine parts, when including bread and sides, or in fact six portions and bread. The food was ok, but more like home made or pub food, certainly not star level. Only the pork was very good. Some were quite large, the question was more about quantity than quality, the dessert was way too large. The service was good, we were given a new table, when a noisy group came in.
Be the first to ReplyBrilliant food & exceptional experience
Fantastic experience, we had the chefs choice menu with wine flight and every course was beautifully balanced, full of flavour and exceptionally cooked. The wines paired perfectly, and it was nice to have wines from some less ‘fashioning’ regions. All courses were delicious, however, our highlights were the Crab & Seaweed tartlets, the Pork, and the Pain Perdu. The room (we sat on the ground floor) has a relaxed and informal atmosphere, yet you still know you are dining in a top restaurant. Finally, the team…sensational! From the moment we arrived the entire team that served us were exceptional. They were friendly, engaging, knowledgeable, discreet (yet attentive) and so understatedly professional. A brilliant evening of great food and great hospitality
Be the first to ReplyA must visit restaurant
Had a very enjoyable evening at The Ninth last month. It is a lovely restaurant with a friendly atmosphere. Everything we ate was incredible. Particular favourites were the Truffle Spaghetti, the Turbot and the Pain Perdu. The staff were extremely welcoming and very helpful, it was clear they had a passion for the restaurant and the menu. Would definitely recommend this restaurant and look forward to returning.
Be the first to ReplySo good to be back
It’s been about a year since our last visit here, as it’s been closed for a refurb. The good news is that they’ve kept all the best bits - the wonderful staff including the main man Jun Tanaka and some of the highlights of the menu such as the Pain Perdu. Then they have made some slight changes to the decor and improved the bathrooms which all go to make it even more special. The crispy artichoke to have as a little light starter was devine. The Gnudi were immense, like Gnocchi on steroids and the Tuna belly and Beetroot tart tatin also excellent and I think new additions to the menu. I have had the roast Turbot and langoustine ravioli previously and they have stuck with them for good reason! Excellent cocktails including one with their own gin + helpful advice on wine, combined with impeccable service all meant for a special night. Bill was far from scary by London standards - we will be back!
Be the first to ReplyRecommend the orecchiette
To keep this short: The Ninth was the first Michelin-starred restaurant I had the privilege to visit. From start to finish it was probably the nicest dinner experience I’ve had. My favorite dish was the orecchiette, followed by the pain perdu.
Be the first to ReplyFabulous 😊
Being foodies it’s always exciting trying somewhere new.. Stunning Food we had a fabulous afternoon trying dishes we wouldn’t of necessarily have chosen and everything was delicious.. Couldn’t recommend this wonderful restaurant enough.. Staff were also attentive and friendly.
Be the first to ReplyLovely evening meal
Visited on a busy Saturday evening. Lovely cosy atmosphere in the restaurant with welcoming staff and great tasting food.
Be the first to ReplyLangoustine ravioli, give me more!
Early supper with friends and family meant a few quiet minutes before the restaurant came to life. Encouraged to share dishes which is a good thing although I would have eaten the ravioli myself rather than share it with 5 others. I think my wife felt the same about the pain perdu. Great food but do have a few dishes to share and try. Delightful waiting team and a good buzz. No music just people enjoying themselves.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent food and lovely atmosphere
This was fabulous! I’ve read the previous reviews and can’t believe they are talking about the same restaurant. Everything from the food and service to the really lovely buzzy atmosphere was just perfect. Tasty beautifully presented food served by attentive friendly and knowledgeable staff. What more do you want? Bearing in mind it’s in London I felt the prices were cheap, for the quality and skill from the kitchen. Our bill for this meal was the cheapest by far but second favourite during our trip. It was great to see it was so busy and it really added to the atmosphere. Loved the decor and the service style of relaxed and friendly. Thankyou for a wonderful meal
Be the first to ReplySadly disappointing
The ambience was enjoyable. The service was as expected. I didn’t enjoy my meal. I’ve prepared more tasty salad, fish and pasta dishes at home. I sent back my main pasta dish, it was bland and tasted like it was prepared by an amateur chef. To be honest, nothing I tasted made an impression. Would not recommend The Ninth to anyone, especially at the prices charged. This was my first experience of a Michelin star restaurant and, if that's what Michelin star is, I'll stick to my locals where I eat scrumptious well presented food for a quarter of the price. I am devastated to write this review as the occasion was to celebrate my father’s 70th birthday. He loves food, but he didn't love his meal at The Ninth. None of us did. We picked a special restaurant for the occasion and it was far from special. As it was a special occasion, we did not want to ruin the evening voicing our discontent, hence my review.
Be the first to ReplyOverpriced & underwhelming
We went here for my father in law’s 70th birthday. We don’t frequent Michelin star restaurants often, although we have been fortunate enough to go to some amazing ones. We save these kind of places for special occasions, we anticipate the bill will be high and we therefore expect an exceptional eating experience and value for money. Firstly, I never review restaurants, but I feel so strongly about our experience that I can’t not share with others! We didn’t have terrible food, in fact it was fine, but we were left so totally underwhelmed - a bill of over £400 was completely unjustified. The service was fine, the ambience was fine, the food was fine. But that was all it was. Nothing blew us away (and we had a decent selection between the 5 of us). The wine is so grossly overpriced it further takes away from the enjoyment of it. The table was too small for all the food - the waitress wanted to stagger our food (probably for that reason) but we wanted starters and mains - not unreasonable I don’t think! We sent back a pasta dish - my brother in law actually thought it might be out of a Heinz can! He had a risotto instead (the best thing we ordered). When the bill came, they had charged us for the risotto despite this being a replacement meal. No apologies from the kitchen. No complimentary drink for my brother in law. Whenever I have been to a high end restaurant to celebrate an occasion and let them know, there has always been a token desert/ cake or something from the establishment. At The Ninth? - a card, signed from the staff…! Needless to say that did not go on the mantelpiece next to the other cards! (If anyone finds it on the Jubilee line then happy belated birthday from Jun!) Not very generous. So all in all we are left wondering how on earth this got its star and would encourage anyone looking for a special meal to look at the hundreds of other restaurants that will blow you away for that money.
Be the first to ReplyBeautifully composed but watch the wine prices
You cannot criticise the food, whilst the portions look small, each and every one is composed and a symphony on your palate, the quality of the ingredients shines through BUT the wines are seriously overpriced. Whilst good, a quick google on some of the wines we drank at £40+ a bottle were readily available to buy at £7 average at many places. I appreciate that restaurants have has a hard time but I won’t go back
Be the first to ReplyFabulous food
This is really worth a detour for anyone seeking something out of the ordinary. Some brilliant treatments including amazing tempura and really a wide variety of plates which are intended to be shared made this a great experience.
Be the first to ReplyExceptional
Visited last night for a Ukraine charity event which had an absolutely exceptional set menu . Everything cooked by Jun Tanaka was cooked to perfection . The wine , the service , the food was just outstanding and would thoroughly recommend this restaurant ..
Be the first to ReplyPoor value for money
Crammed interior with no wow factor! Had to move once as table of two was set out for three. My issues with the food was the value- told that it was sharing dishes but tiny portions including mains made it poor value for money. Beetroot dish good. Artichoke - two sliced piece of artichoke- inadequate for the dish and too salty. Pasta- the black pasta- malloreddus cuttlefish was good- reasonable size. The langoustine ravioli for £23 was 4 piece! If sharing with 4 you get one pieces which poor value for money for a sharing plate. Mains of turbot which was £38- small dish and tasted muddy- it would be poor quality fish for turbot to taste muddy! Accompaniment of roast cauliflower was £10- too much was the portion and what it was. Best dish was the pain perdu-£12 but was very good- still overpriced for desert- French toast soaked in custard- absolutely delicious Service was average. Wines- Over pieces. Bottles for less than £10 being sold with 4X mark up !
Be the first to ReplyFamily Style
This was a great restaurant to enjoy a family style dinner with shared dishes. It is like an elevated izakaya/tapas style restaurant. The appetizers, main courses and dessert were all very good. Cool and lively atmosphere and reservations definitely recommended as it was very crowded when we were there. Cocktail, beer and wine list were all very decent. Attentive servers.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent - well worth a visit!
Dinner at The Ninth capped off my week-long culinary escapade through Europe. With 6 Michelin stars under my belt already, The Ninth was up against some heady competition. It more than held its own!
My turbot main course was out of this world. Moist, flavorful, perfectly cooked - I don't think I've had such a good piece of seafood in a while (note that it comes bone-in, but don't be deterred as the bone is quite large and sturdy, so the fish can be peeled off it easily w/o one getting small bone bits in every mouthful).
My beef cheek starter with horseradish sauce was equally flavorful, but arrived a bit on the cool side, unfortunately.
Service was very attentive and welcoming by all, including the floor manager and my charming Milanese bartender/waitress.
Solid selection of wines, including by the glass.
Homey, comfortable space with a good vibe and ambiance.
Highly recommended!
Outstanding
