Food ok view other worldly
Perched right on the beach, this restaurant offers breathtaking ocean views. The ambiance strikes a balance between professional sophistication and warm hospitality. Our waitress, Liz, was great, nailing every aspect of our experience. The cocktails were a refreshing prelude to our meal, both in taste and presentation. While the food was competently prepared and enjoyable, it didn't quite leap into the realm of culinary marvels. The dishes are good, certainly, but they stop short of being amazing. In essence, the restaurant delivers a solid dining experience with standout service and a view to die for, even if the cuisine doesn't always steal the spotlight.
Be the first to ReplyNot the same as it used to be
We went there for my husband’s birthday. It was a Wednesday evening and they were busy. Although we had reservations, we still waited about 15 minutes to be seated. Service was good, not great like it used to be there. Food was very good. It just didn’t seem like the same restaurant that we used to go to. The wait staff, food and ambience used to be perfection and now it’s good but nothing like it used to be. People used to dress up but not anymore from what we saw. We requested a window seat, but did not get one. They sat us in the back and we never saw the ocean at all! You couldn’t even tell we were at the beach. It was a bit disappointing.

Love this spot! The views are incredible and awesome for a date or couples night. Food is very solid as well! They also have valet parking which is nice.
Be the first to ReplyGreat food, exceptional service, amazing night.
Absolutely fantastic night, well worth the money. The food was superb and the service was nothing short of exceptional. Of course the location can’t be beat, being right in the beach at the water’s edge. Parking could be a little problematic, especially during the summer, if you don’t use the valet. We will absolutely go there again!
Be the first to ReplyExtremely Underwhelming 😞
Extremely underwhelming! The food was good, but overpriced and inconsistent. 4 of us ordered the same dish, however each pork chop was a different size and not cooked evenly. Mine was perfect, my daughter’s was under, my husband’s was over. On top of that, the service was not the best. The server didn’t know the menu or how open or pour a bottle of wine, nor did she take away our amuse bouche plates until after we finished our apps, and that was only after we piled them along the side of the table. As a matter of fact, there was a dirty side plate on the window sill next to us. As we were the fist seating, this tells me it must have been there overnight. Furthermore, when offering a 4-course meal, the amuse bouche shouldn’t be counted. It’s normally an extra surprise specialty from the chef. Meanwhile, we added an assortment of caviar to our order, only to receive the accouterments on a platter, without serving utensils. We asked for them, but they never came, so we used some of our soiled silverware from the amuse bouche. The view was spectacular, but didn’t make up for the service and price, especially when compared to Matsu in Oceanside, or Providence in LA. I don’t think I’ll be going back. I’ve decided to lower my rating to 2. Now, more than 10 days after the my less than favorable experience and I still have yet to receive any response. I suppose this is further confirmation of their poor service.
Be the first to ReplyPhenomenal experience for our anniversary!
My husband and I celebrated our wedding anniversary here since we had our wedding reception a year ago at the Marine Room. It was an AMAZING experience! Dominic was the most professional and best waiter we have ever had. Period. And we have been to many restaurants. We felt so special! In regards to food, I would recommend the surf and turf and the branzino. But everything here is excellent!
Be the first to ReplyNoisy experience
The food is good to very good. The bar area, which we were right next to, was quite noisy and unruly. This is most definitely a place to return to when they have a quiet night or when they offer a different seating.
Be the first to ReplySadly disappointed after 42 years.
This has always been expensive, but it used to have extraordinary food. Prices have skyrocketed and the food was disappointing - sides that came on entree were inedible. Menu has shrunk and they encourage you to "build your own feast" from several small dishes which are very expensive. Valet parking requires $16 and he asks for a tip. We've come here 11 times in 42 years - every time we visit San Diego. I'm afraid this was our last. No longer worth the view.
Be the first to ReplyDo your research before booking. You may be in for a surprise. Service & food are not worth the price, only the view
This place came to me highly recommended by its iconic view. I made a reservation for 4 well in advance. It was even stated that there is a $25 dlls per person cancelation fee. I received a call the morning of our appointment to confirm our assistance. Not only did I confirmed, but also asked if it could be moved to 7:45 pm instead of 8:00. We arrive sharp at 7:45. Note that self parking is extremely challenging but the restaurant offers valet parking. To our surprised, we arrived to a lobby full of people. I was told that they had an issue with their reservation system and overbooked people (even though they called to confirm that morning and nothing was said about overbooking). We had to wait for 45 minutes to get a table. We were not even offered a complimentary drink, which would have been expected from such delay. We were given a table way in the back even though they had 2 tables with the ocean view which were being cleaned. I would've guess that after waiting 45 minutes and given the fact that they had no one else waiting after us, the minimum expectation after such a long wait would have been to offer a good table. I ended up paying $485 dlls for dinner that was not worth the cost. If you don't have a table with a view, there is nothing special on the menu. To top it off, they completely changed my wife's vegetarian menu with out asking. She was told that they had ran out of the food she had ordered and that the chef just changed the menu. It was not bad, but again, on such an over priced restaurant, the service expectations are higher than a McDonalds or any other fast food restaurant. They should have asked if the change in menu was ok with her. In my case I had a fried fish, was good, with a lot more garlic than expected and the couple we invited had a Tomahawk steak. For $485 plus tip, is a restaurant that I am never coming back nor invite business associates. There are far better menu choices in San Diego, specially at this price point. Just to name a few, Pueto La Boca in Little italy, Cuccina Urbana, Mr. A's, Javier's, etc.

Beautiful views, but that’s it! Overrated, it has great views but that’s it. The food is like eating wedding food, & the prices are outrageous. For a so so meal I would not recommend this place ever!!! Don’t waste your $
Be the first to ReplyHIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!
We had a dinner party and everything was A++ Parking: No problem! Super convenient valet. Hostess: Excellent. We were greeted with a smile & were seated right away. Table: Elegant. View: SPECTACULAR and romantic ocean view. Servers: Fantastic. Food: DELICIOUS!!! A bit pricey, but totally worth it! Only down side: They charged us a DOUBLE-corkage fee for our large wine bottle (magnum), which I thought was odd. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
Be the first to ReplySpecial occasion hot spot in La Jolla
Perched on the water at the Shores beach in La Jolla, the magical setting is at its best at sunset or during a full moon, when the waves sweep up against the windows for an exciting visual display of ocean grandeur...seabirds swoop and dive as you enjoy delicioys gourmet food...it's expensive for sure, but worth it for a special occasion
Be the first to ReplyAmbiance is a 10, the food not so much
We spent Christmas Day here. As I said, the ambiance was amazing, the wait staff very nice, but the food (entre) was sub-per, especially for the price. I had the Bass, which was very dry. My husband the lamb which did not have that much flavor.
Be the first to ReplyDisappointing Christmas Eve Dinner
While the newly refurbished rooms were lovely the Marine Room pulled a bit of a fast one which led to a very disappointing Christmas Eve for me. We called in advance and asked if there was a prefixe and told no (we even checkced the website) when in actuality there was. While priced ok, the selections where not what I would have ordered and worse, the dessert trio was awful. Even the waiter could not identify the mystery fruit tart (one was lemon was was "fruit" Neither could be identified and the overly sweet chocolate cake was left behind by everyone. For a near empty room at 9pm, we were not offered coffee or tea. What was a tradition for us is now no more and sadly the whole experience left a bad taste in my mouth for many reasons.
Be the first to ReplyNice view. Not worth the price of admission.
There is a view of the ocean that is very nice. The positives really end there. The food, wine and drinks are absurdly overpriced. Food is really mediocre at best, let alone the crazy prices. Service is also mediocre. Find a better place with a nice view
Be the first to ReplyMuch better options
I came to this restaurant with high expectations and unfortunately I left the place really disappointed. I reserved with a week in advance (there is a $25 dlls per person cancellation fee and you have to input your credit card number to reserve). I received a call from the restaurant the morning of the appointment to verbally confirm my appointment. I asked if I could push it back by 15 minutes from 8:15 to 8:00. The person on the phone said that there was no problem and moved my appointment to 8:00. We arrived at 7:55 pm. To our surprise there was a waiting line of more 20 people. We were told that they had an issue with the reservation system and had over booked the place. We waited close to 30 minutes to be assigned a table. People that arrived there later than us were seated ahead of us. When I asked why the hostess apologized for being over booked, but since my original reservation was at 8:15 the seated first people that had 8:00 reservation. I explained that I had verbally moved my reservation to 8:00. Her response was that I could talk to the manager if I wanted to. I didn’t and just waited. If they called everyone who reserved as they called me earlier that day, how did they overbooked the place? After 30+ minutes waiting we finally were given a table. Even though they had 2 empty tables by the window, we were not offered those. Those tables remained empty for the rest of the night as they had more people leaving than arriving at that time of the night and people were assigned other tables. My bill was $565 dlls for a table for 4 people including a wine bottle. Our second disappointment came in the form that we were told they had ran out of most of the house specials and they had only the 2lbs lobster. How can you come to this place and have them running out of food? I was absolutely not impressed with the food we chose. It was nicely presented, but for the price of it I was expecting something much better. My wife is vegetarian and they offered only one plate for vegetarians. She ordered a tofu plate. Without asking her, they brought a completely different plate. She was told that they had also ran out of tofu and the chef prepared something different. The plate was really good, but again, we were surprised that the plate was changed without even asking us about it. If you take the view out of the equation and the bad service, for the price point of the food, San Diego offers several other gourmet options. I can think of at least 10 restaurants at that price point that offer better food choices and are served with excellent sides. Once you take out the option of seating next to ocean, then you are comparing this restaurant with several other good options at the same price point and sadly this is a restaurant I am not coming back. One pro, was that the server was really good in knowing the menu and explaining it. She was also good recommending wines from their list. The wine list was one of the most complete lists I’ve seen. Really good selection of bottles ranging from $60 dlls to thousands of dlls. What would have changed our experience? If the restaurant knows they had overbooked, they could have 1) called me to let me know ahead of time, 2) offer some sort of aperitif or drink on the house while they made us wait, 3) offered a table view to make up for their overbooking error. They failed at what is known in the service industry the “moments of truth” which are those moments that if you fail at them, the client will not come back. For example, if an airline losses your baggage, most likely you don’t use that airline again. My review may be very strict, but at $50-$80 dlls a plate, your expectations are not the same as going to a burger joint. I have extensively traveled the world and have comparisons at every price point. Unfortunately this restaurant is not a match for other restaurants of this quality.
Be the first to ReplySplendid Meal
Location, Location, Location! Right on the water from within La Jolla I can only imagine the sunset views are stunning. The booking we had was after sunset unfortunately. I ate halibut for my main course which was perfectly cooked and tasty. This restaurant is probably goof for a special occasion.
Be the first to ReplyThe best of everything
Can’t say enough good stuff. This should be the 8 th wonder of the world. This is a must go whatever you eat is the best and you cannot too the ambience and service
Be the first to ReplyWonderful setting!
You absolutely can’t beat the setting at the Marine Room. It is right on the water with waves splashing up against the building. Can’t get much closer than that. Service was very professional and friendly. In both cases my wife and created our own entrees. My wife ordered twin lobster tails while I had swordfish and a lobster tail. Lobster was very good but the swordfish was even better. For starters we ordered a perfectly prepared egg and a watermelon salad. Both very good. The pricing is expensive and the menu is somewhat limited would be my only negative comments.
Be the first to ReplyNot to be missed
If you find yourself in La Jolla and you are not at The Marine Room, you did it wrong. Great ambiance (dress nice, the place deserves it), great service, excellent food. Wine list a little too Californian, but the one bottle of Italian on there is very good.
Be the first to ReplyDisappointing
First off, the view is beautiful and the dining room stunning. The pricing is aggressive, but for a prime location, to be expected. Unfortunately, my $50+ fish was WAY over-done and under seasoned. (My sis has the same and said hers was also bland and overcooked) My mom loved her scallops and Shrimp, but the pork belly was inedible. The best dish on the table was my brother-in -laws pork chop. Too bad that a place that supposedly specializes in seafood made such a hash out of 2/3rds of the seafood meals. I’d hesitate to spend that kind of money again.

Incredible atmosphere and a wonderful view. The food was delicious and the presentation of the meal was 5 star. Service was excellent.
Be the first to ReplyManager needs a lesson in hospitslity
Have been to the Resturant a dozen or so times. Recently Went there for my nieces birthday. I knew we would be about five-ten minutes late for our 7:45 reservation so I called at 7:35 to let the Resturant know and to be a respectful customer. The gentleman who answered the phone, who I later learned was the manager (I believe he is a French gentleman) immediately informed me in a very ungracious way that they had a 15 minute hold policy. That’s was it, that all he said, no thank you for calling, nothing. He came off as if he was telling me if for any reason we were 16 minutes late we would loose our table. (It appears from an earlier review a $325 deposit also) My immediate reaction was his tenor was rude, abrupt and ungracious.
We arrived at 7:50 and literally waited ten minutes to be sat. My niece arrived with a bottle of sparkling cider her reading tutor gave her for her summer reading efforts and much to my surprise the manager -same person on the phone- came over and told us that he requires a $45.00 corkage fee for serving the sparkling cider. Wow, I understand a wine corkage fee, but a totally random kids birthday sparkling cider money grab? His mannerisms and tone was cold, ungracious and pretentious.
The wait staff did a nice job recovering from that but I won’t soon forget the manager’s phone tenor and $45.00 kids corkage nonsense (on top of the multiple hundreds we spent there that evening) when making future high end and dollar resturant dining choices in the future.
Marine Room is good, but I would grade their plate presentation as better than the actual food, which is good but not special.
Be Careful!!
There is a good chance they will take your deposit money if you have cancel before their deadline. We made reservations for a large party and tried calling numerous times before the reservation. We finally talked to someone well over 24 hours before and the lady on the phone told us no problem to cancel. Well they charged us $325 and won't refund it. They were rude and disrespectful when we called about the charge. I am glad we did not eat there and never will. There is restaurants in San Diego that have better views and actually care about their customers.
