A very overpriced restaurant in an edgy area of Vancouver
The portions are very small and overpriced. We paid 108 dollars for the “Crabby American” with added lobster, which was presented to us as a half lobster. As you see from the pictures it’s just a small tale of a baby lobster. The lobster itself was 50. They don’t give any choice of reasonable wine. The bottles start from 90. I took gin (pictured) and my partner took beer. I liked the “Squid games” but the portion was less than 100 g. We payed 265 dollar for a dinner of three dishes of a small size with no wine. Clearly very overpriced place. The location is in a rough area. It’s not the Gastown but 10 min walk to the East side.

This is the first time I have been disappointed here. The room was too noisy to hear my friend, the prices have increased, and it's not possible to get a cup of tea after dinner. Seriously?

The Mackenzie Room has been on my list for a very long time. I'm so glad to have finally been able to check it out. The food was absolutely delicious and the service was unreal. We sat at the bar where Lewis was extremely friendly and helpful. We will be back soon!
Be the first to ReplyIncredible place
Genuinely the best food we had in Vancouver, we’ve been to a lot of Michelin star restaurants in the UK and this was up there with them in terms of originality and execution as well as exceptional service. We had the “just the two of us” tasting menu and although it was plenty, we added another two dishes because we didn’t want to miss out! The pairings were also great, the whole thing was excellent value for money. Don’t let the proximity to a sketchy area put you off, just get a taxi 😄
Be the first to ReplyGreat restaurant in not so great neighborhood
Great variety of elegantly prepared dishes as part of the tasting menu. Bar tender also made some exquisite drinks. Service was friendly and efficient.
Be the first to ReplyGreat food, great service
we absolutely loved everything about the place - from cool decor to attentive service to funny entree names to the food! Too bad we were not hungry and did not choose 'I want it all' menu which includes everything on the menu for $85 - a pretty great deal in my opinion! we got chicken of the sea (SOOOOO GOOD!), bison, salad and salmon tartare and all were amazing.

Our waiter said that our party of 4 was the ideal size for the « I want it all » proposition. So we wanted it all: first courses of greens and sea urchins, vegetable dishes, fish, meats and finally deserts; all to be shared, often thinking « I wish I could have it all to myself »… Creative dishes, never-boring arrangements of flavors, cordial service and spot-on suggestion of wine. Thanks to the chefs and team!

Superb food. Excellent service. From the time we arrived till the time we left felt like we were the only ones in the restaurant. Mckenzie room rocks:)
Be the first to ReplyKeeps on serving up the most inventive, delicious food in Vancouver.
We have been to The Mackenzie Room many times since it first opened a few years ago. Yesterday was a last minute decision. We sat at the bar, always a nice choice for two and ordered the menu for two - two starters, two mains, and one dessert. As usual, each element was inventive, perfectly prepared and left us wanting to lick the plates. The set menu consisted of the sea urchin pâté (always on the menu: without a doubt the best starter known to man), roasted parsnips ablaze with flavour, melt in your mouth salmon, and a lamb dish with rare loin and a croquette of raised neck meat. For dessert, a mini chocolate cake filled with quince, topped with chestnut whipped cream, surrounded by thin, crisp, chocolate biscuits. This doesn’t actually do the whole thing justice, as each dish was accompanied by incredible veggies, sauces, bits of preserved fruit etc. etc. If you have never been to TMR, you need to go right away…
Be the first to ReplyGood food, not worth the chaotic experience
Visiting Vancouver we headed to the MacKenzie room which we had read a glowing review of. The food, for the most part, lived up to the review, especially the absolutely perfectly and divinely prepared sablefish. But the experience, as a whole, was just a bit too chaotic to make it a fully enjoyable experience and ended up being very off-putting. We arrived at the same time as another group that had a similar name on their reservation, and although we were first, they gave the other party our table. After waiting a bit more we were finally seated and told that the cocktail on their day’s menu was no longer available because they didn’t have the ingredients. Service was friendly but quite slow and an hour and a half later we had to explain to one of the several servers that checked on us that we still had not had our dinner. I can see the appeal of this place. Walking in it’s as if a Brooklyn farm to table “cool” restaurant had been transported into Vancouver. But, as someone who has eaten at way too many of those, I am looking for a well-run restaurant with great food. This one seems to be haphazardly hanging onto the coat-tails of a really good chef.
Be the first to ReplyA Fabulous Experience
Arrived for a late evening meal. We selected the "I want it all" meal for 7 of us. I highly recommend this restaurant. It was creative- the squid ink urchen paté was spectacular, the celeriac was beautiful, the tuna amazing. Well, I could go on and on. Every dish was great, but the flavor profiles and presentation was so thoughtful 👌.
The server was attentive but not intrusive. The cocktails were enjoyable. If I had a criticism it would be the small red wine list. Personally Okanagan wines don't appeal to me, particularly the ones they had. But that is a minor thing as we had the punch bowl that worked.
Set menu interesting and tasty
We did a dine out with friends and opted for the set ($69) menu. Service was outstanding with our server "Brando" taking great pains to describe euch of the dishes we were about to receive. Portion size good for a set piece..actually perhaps a bit too much for this oldster. The place was hopping and and with the wood floors and brick walls had a very nice vibe. I will return after the hoopla and try other items on the menu.
Be the first to ReplyExpectation leads to frustration
I had expectations, mostly from the reviews I read.
Quite a disappointment.
The service was fair...nothing espectacular and I felt we were always being rushed. For example, the waiters always asking if we were finished or if the plates could be taken away.
The beer selection was poor...
The food was ok. My Char was very good, but my wife's course was not. Hers was just warm.
The place is (very) noisy and (very) dark...
When you make a reservation online there is a reservation fee, which (in the fine print) is said to be returned (it's a deposit). It's not. I later got an email, saying that they refund you and it can take up to 7 days to appear on the statement. I find this practice insulting.
And the it is (ridiculously) overpriced.
Not a place I'd recommend or would come back.
?? Over Rated ??
I had a very FASCINATING diner at The Mackenzie Room in the week end for their Dine Out Vancouver 2022 , it located in downtown east side , very sketchy area , dirty unassuming out side , decor with soft lighting , Wow ! it is jam packed , very nosy ! Social distance or Covid Guidelines questionable ??? with the current pandemic , We do not feel comfortable at all , it may be the perfect scenario for some but not for me ! their dine out menu is $59 per person , for two only , no solo order , it is all most like tapas tasting style , Pacific Northwest cuisine , to me , little expensive , the Chicken of the sea very inserting , quality good , foods delicious but which really just okay , over rated , too over crowded , service okay , I all way give my truth value reviews good or bad , may be lot better during Week Night , closed on Monday and Tuesday ! not a romantic or relax restaurant for dinner and not likely I will be back for another dinner due to the location and Covid guidelines .
Be the first to ReplyDecadent food… every time!!!
I absolutely love this restaurant everything about it is extremely well done and well thought out.
My partner and I love celebrating our anniversary here but we also come other times… that chicken of the sea is a must try!!! Sooo delicious.
Also we did the recommended menu with the wine pairing and we were in paradise… haha
The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable as well so it’s definitely my top 5 restaurants in Vancouver.
Great flavors, a bit overpriced
My wife and I have been wanting to try MacKenzie room for a while. Overall, it was a nice experience. The quality of the food was very good. The flavors were wonderful. Service was also exceptional.
The one complaint that we have is that the portion sizes could be a bit more generous for the price. There are also other competing high quality restaurants that offer a bit more value for the money.
The dishes themselves we would describe not as family style, but more as tapas style. For example, the cod entree really is a dish for one, at most two. I can't see sharing a small piece of cod amongst 3 or 4 people, which is what you would get if you ordered the 4 person "We will take it all" menu.
We'll definitely be back to try other dishes in the future. However, it won't be a regular visit type of restaurant.
Street parking as pretty decent.
Had never heard of this place before
Came for dinner on a Saturday night. Their menu is very small (three or four items per category) and is written on a big board. The names and 'descriptions' on the menu board are very confusing (creative, minimal) and don't really give you any idea of what the item is. Clearly they want to encourage questions and a conversation.
Ordered the "chicken of the sea" and the carpaccio for appies. The chicken of the sea was not tuna at all, but a sea urchin pate which was recommended by the server, and it was good but it wasn't full of amazing sea urchin flavor. My dining companion had also spoken of it beforehand, but it did not meet the expectations I had built up based on his excitement. The squid ink bread that it came with though was delicious, so moist and soft and full of flavor. The carpaccio was very good.
For my main, I chose the octopus which came with humboldt squid, and some sort of orzo type pasta. Flavors were great, loved the pasta, only thing is I would have been happier with was more octopus - there wasn't a super generous amount of it.
For dessert, we shared the chocolate cake with cherries and cream cheese icing - it was delicious.
I might come back if they change up the menu.
Creative food pairings in eclectic setting
Four of us stopped here for dinner before a show at the Firehall. The neighbourhood has seen a lot of change in past years, but it's still rough to witness the poverty and effects of addiction. However, once you step through the door of The Mackenzie Room you enter another world. Intimate in size and styled as one might who has inherited mix of collectibles from family relatives - it is charming and fun from the get-go. The chalkboard menu highlights the ever-changing offers with full description of all flavours in the dish. We decided to order 5 items and share family-style. The sun choke plate and the grilled carrots came first and they were out of this world. For one who prefers to eat mainly a plant-based diet - I was in heaven. The next three dishes included meat and/or ling cod and they were all equally delicious.
It is worth saying that the service was outstanding. Our server was knowledgeable about the food and the wines. She chose a lovely Pinot Noir on my behalf (which was a delight!) The servers are attentive but manage to never interfere. Quite a feat given the close quarters.
We have been telling friends that they really must visit this special restaurant.
Excellent Food in a Tough Part of Town
Fortunately they have curtains over the windows so you cannot see the homeless camp across the street. If you can get over that, then it is well worth the effort to go. Food is excellent. We shared our plates for 4 people. Lot's of interesting ideas in their food preparation. Highly recommend it.
Be the first to ReplyInnovative
Our table of four went for the 'I want it all' . . 12 courses for $62/pp. The only menu item which I could not get behind was the Ink Brioche. . and it was the appearance not the taste that was off putting. . .the black brioche looked like a burnt piece of wood but it was soft and tasty! A very innovative selection of salad, vegetables, seafood and meat followed by 2 delicious desserts. Unfortunately for reasons I was unable to ascertain they do not serve tea. . so I had a cup of hot water to accompany my desserts. Wine selection is limited to BC wines . . not a problem but if you like big California reds you won't find them here! We found street parking across from the tent city at Oppenheimer Park . . visitors beware this is not a pretty area of Vancouver. If you are a foodie it is worth it!
