😍 5/5 - Top Restaurant in Sacramento

A most entertaining night with excellent food. A guarantee you won't go home hungry. This is a fixe menu but will apparently support dietary challenges as the staff while sitting at the counter went around to every person asking them of any dietary restrictions.
Before I go on, reservations were tough to get. We got lucky and someone had apparently cancelled. They open the doors at 1700h and no sooner. I must also admit when we first arrived, I looked at the area/parking lot and the restaurant is next to a laundromat and in the Arden Fair area versus not being in the high rent distract which I felt it really brought home fact that successful restaurant can and probably should be accessible in all parts of Sacramento. So do not plan on arriving early to hang out at the bar. You are seated efficiently and in a very professional manner by friendly staff. Of note, all of the seats were bar seat types and I think this is to enable even the guests seated at tables to be able to see the chef and his team prepare/cook certain dishes. It is the open kitchen type venue. Now the behind the scene preparation area as well as the washing/cleaning up area is also open as we wandered back there pre meal and during the intermission period. I can guarantee you that the area top to bottom was spotless!
Even though there is a fixe menu one can add beverages (wine pairings for an additional fee) or purchase wine by the glass. FYI - Champagne and a glass of wine is basically 10 bucks cheaper than the small wining pairing.
They change the menu weekly to let you know. Started with two courses and then a mini-break of more tidbits served in the kitchen area. Oh yes, prior to starting they also had a few morsels to try. Yummy. Pace yourself! Don't stuff yourself with the hor d'oeuvres even though they are really tasty. Then there are two main course which ours was quail and beef. Fantastic. Then of course dessert.
Throughout the evening the chef provides much entertainment and education describing how each course is prepared and a little background why it was chosen. For example he created a Dungeness crab delight and a ravioli with truffles because of the crab season and the several types of truffles are beginning and ending their respective seasons. Thus several types of truffles were used. Crab however because of the delay in the SF Bay harvest was flown in from another part of the states.
The desserts was killer. If you were a diabetic, this would require one to take additional insulin. If you had high cholesterol, you may be more cholesterol lowering drugs. All kidding aside, the food was rich and tasty. The second dessert threw me over the "full" stage. We ended up boxing the dessert for home.
Now the Chef kept offering anyone to just speak up if you wanted anything additional. I don't think anyone asked for seconds. He claimed that we were being served over 5,000 calories that evening. I must admit that I did elect to go to the gym the next morning.
Everyone pretty much was celebrating some event such as an anniversary, new job, birthday etc. Chef made sure he recognized and highlighted some interesting fact about the person/persons going around the room. Vast majority of people in our group were first timers but there were some annual attenders.
To our surprise we found about that the restaurant received it first Michelin start is summer. I asked him about the process and he explain how it happens and why the Sacramento area never had one nor the opportunity to be rated. There were several other quality restaurants being awarded the plate status but only one restaurant in the Sacramento area was awarded the Michelin Star.
Price - Be prepared to break out your credit card. Although the fixe meal price was $135 per person, the cost of the wine, the 22% gratuity and the sales tax. Now for the gratuity, well worth the amount in that the staff were attentive, not overbearing and available to answer any question to me every need/desire of the guest.
The noise level was not an issue as we chatted with our neighbors as people are seated at the counter and at tables. A few were definitely a group but others especially at the counter was random. I would definitely request a seat at the counter to get a view of what the staff were cooking/preparing.
Bottom Line - Will I be coming back; probably for an annual special occasion. Multiple times per year? That is a hard one as we have eaten in Michelin Star rate restaurants in SF for less money per person but requires one to drive to the city. Plus one of our goals is to try numerous restaurants both in the Sacramento but also the Bay Area as we have friends and kids living there.
