I just moved to Antwerp from San Francisco, and was so excited to try out the Jane. I had high expectations based on everything I'd heard and read, however sadly there were surprising missteps that made me walk away from the experience feeling very disappointed with no plans to return. THE PROS- It truly is a beautiful and detail oriented atmosphere. From the arrangement of the tables to the music to the lighting and even the bathroom soap (really great soap), it was truly a spectacular environment to spend hours in. There was so much to marvel at, and the people watching was top notch too. - The drinks were absolutely magical. Gorgeous, inventive and delicious balance of flavors. Also, the effect of pouring with dry ice for the specialty cocktails added to the magic of the experience. Plus, the drink menu (more like a book) was cheeky and fun. - The food was absolutely and total art. The plating and arrangement were gorgeous, no matter the dish or flavors. I was so impressed with the inventive use of color/texture/space on the plates. THE CONS- I did not feel that the Jane knew about or took my dairy allergy seriously. Even though I noted it in the reservation, I had to bring it up multiple times to servers because it wasn't clear to me that they were aware of it. When I did speak to them about it, they just kept pushing "but you can have a little bit, right?". Every Michelin star restaurant I've been to refers to allergies noted on the reservation up-front and puts the diner at ease for the rest of the meal, which did not happen here. - When the 4th course arrived and the bowls were put down on the table, my beautiful little stack in the dish had completely toppled over. I looked over at my boyfriend's beautiful dish and sighed :/ It's not a big deal really, but it was definitely anticlimactic. The server just said "oops" and walked away.- There was a lamb dish with the meat prepared 2 ways: the belly and the back. When the food arrived I looked at my boyfriend's dish and my dish, and something was off. Half of the meat in his dish was missing (the lamb belly). I had to call a server over and ask why his dish looked different, and then ended up bringing us a little bowl with lamb belly in it some time later. Again not a huge deal, but it adds up. - The biggest thing: One of the dishes was a large round cracker topped with what looked like big cheese chunks. I was so nervous about being served cheese that I called our server over to confirm that it was not cheese. He said "it's pear" and that it definitely was not cheese and it was safe to eat. I took a big bite and immediately felt a wash of panic through my body - it was 100% cheese. I didn't know what to do because I wasn't going to spit it out, so I had to eat it. I was really, really upset to have been served something that would make me sick later on. My allergy isn't life or death, but imagine if this happened to someone with a shellfish allergy for example? This is completely unacceptable, especially at a 2 Michelin star establishment. Later they apologized and clarified that the cheese was lactose-free, however 1) that's something they should clarify while they serve the dish so the person doesn't panic and 2) I don't eat *any* cheese, even lactose-free cheese, so this is still an issue and they should have checked with me first. I expected for these mistakes (and the fact that I was allergic to one of the dishes) that there would be some sort of gesture to compensate for the experience.... (ie: comp a drink, bring over a little something instead of the cheese cracker I couldn't eat) but that never happened. When I mentioned this to the staff at the front desk, they were empathetic but it didn't do much at that point. I had the sneaking suspicion that because of how I look (young, casual, etc) we weren't taken seriously at the Jane and also that our server was in training. I'm certain that if Sergio Herman knew about the experience we had, he would be more than disappointed.
