Superb hotel, restaurant and pub
We found it in a number of carefully-compiled selections, so our expectations were already pretty high but they managed to exceed them. The hotel is comfortable, clean and quiet. It provides you with all the basic amenities you need when you are back from a day of hiking in a warm, welcoming and familiar environment. There is a nice outdoor area or a beautiful lounge inside to have your tea or beer. They have a restaurant on-site which is highly recommended, and half-board accommodation is available. It is often described as a gastro-pub, but as far as I am concerned a number of their Michelin-starred "competitors" should drop by here and take notes. They offer variety and quality, both in the locally-sourced ingredients and in the way the dishes are made and presented. The service is efficient and kind. This place is strategically-located to access some of the activities within Brecon Beacons. With an easy drive you can reach Pont ar Daf, the National Trust parking for the Pen-Y-Fan hiking (you can start the hike there and close a loop in another parking nearby). Always with an easy drive you can reach the Black Mountains circuit, which is a 50-mile tour through nice villages, Norman ruins and ancient woods.
Be the first to ReplyGood food; nice setting
We recently stopped by the Felin Fach Griffin for lunch on our way to the Brecon Beacons. This was a wonderfully cosy Welsh pub (with rooms) - we were quickly welcomed upon arrival and shown to our table. Service was warm and professional. The food was several notches above what would be on offer even at a good gastopub - and coupled with the setting made for a thoroughly enjoyable late lunch. We will definitely return!
Be the first to ReplyUnderwhelmed
It's a few years since we visited The Felin Fach Griffin and we were disappointed with our lunch. Staff were efficient and courses delivered promptly. The starter was a crab rarebit which lacked flavor. The fish and chips were a real let down. We expected small portions so were not surprised at the thin narrow battered piece of fish, but it was completley tastless. The batter very bland. The chips were ok. The minuscule serving of mushy peas tasted great. Desert was bread and butter pudding . Very simple and very flavourless. Would have expected it to be elevated in some way but it was very dull. Was expecting it to be rich and creamy. Did not feel like a gastro meal and frankly our local fish and chip shop knocks spots off them. We won't return as for the price could have found somewhere more tasty. £40 per head with fizzy water. 12.5% service charge added.
Be the first to ReplyReally pretty perfect -both room and dinner
Pretty perfect really. Huge room with two bathrooms and easily accommodated two extra beds for the kids. Dinner and breakfast included in the price meant it was pretty cheap too. The food at both dinner and breakfast was as good as I've had in a pub. Wine list done with love with plenty of classics and quirky bottles. Great pin of cask ale in the bar. Nice staff - everything pretty effortless. And let me charge my car for free too. Will go back

Average food. I don’t think that it is worth the extra money you have to pay. The service was slow. Waited ages for desert and cancelled in the end as needed to catch a bus and we had been there for two hours
Be the first to ReplyWonderful food and great accommodation.
We stayed for 2 nights dinner bed and breakfast. We also took our Cocker Spaniel with us and he was made to feel very welcome in our room and the restaurant. The room was very comfy and even had covers on the seat for our dog, it was very warm but we were staying on the hottest weekend of the year. It was a great base for exploring and walking in the Brecon Beacons. The highlight however was the food, it was some of the best food we have ever tasted and the side dishes fri the kitchen garden were wonderful, my wife is still talking about the tomato salad we shared with our Hake and Louise’s Cauliflower based vegetarian main. The other evening we had the steak and the cod loin again perfect. The beer and wine were also really good and a great selection. We will definitely be back.
Be the first to ReplyA worthwhile stopover for Brecon National Park.
On the strength of a Daily Telegraph review of The Griffin we booked back in March for a stay on their special deal for September. Two nights in a comfortable room with three course dinner each night. We were not disappointed. They have an excellent creative chef with daily tweaks to the menu on offer. We couldn't fault the food on either night, although on the second night the portions defeated us leaving no room to test the sweets. Beds comfortable but the hotel is on a main road, and even with a room at the back it is noisy. The rooms are well equipped and most comfortable. The staff were most welcoming and made every effort to please. The wine list is well marked up but there are some cheaper options to try. One tip - check your bills. We were overcharged £140 - partly picked up by me before paying but the other amount was picked up very quickly when the person responsible for accounts checked in later in the morning. An email of apology was waiting on our return that lunchtime. All sorted the same day - but we finished up with items from other guests charged to our bill. It was hard on the person trying to serve breakfasts and deal with accounts - perhaps someone needs to be on duty a little earlier to deal with guest accounts so this doesn't happen again. This small matter won't prevent us from visiting the Griffin again - if just for a wonderful well presented and tasty evening meal.
Be the first to ReplyExceptional hotel- what a lucky find.
I highly recommend this hotel and restaurant. The bedrooms are lovely with small attention to detail such as ground coffee and a cafetière in the room. The bed was so comfortable. The food was absolutely delicious and lots of options for a picky eater and coeliac. Friendly and approachable staff who went above and beyond to look for my wife’s lost phone (we found it). Dog friendly too and again attention to detail with poo bags and feed bowls in the hallway.
Be the first to ReplyA Must Visit!
This was recommended by Debbie of The Lodge in Garthbrengy (AirBnB home) and lived up to all expectations! The welcome was warm and friendly, the atmosphere was lovely and the decor was beautiful. Then the main reason for our visit, the food, was simply delicious and plentiful. The available choice was superb and both my wife’s & my starters and main courses were beautiful presented with fresh Al dente vegetables and perfectly cooked. The price was surprisingly reasonable given that they ticked all the boxes for a gourmet meal out. Will definitely return if we’re back in the area.
Be the first to ReplyA pleasant surprise!
This was quite a find! We had no expectations but were pleasantly surprised to discover a really excellent place to eat here. A new chef has recently started apparently and her efforts are to be enjoyed. The crab starter with a ginger dressing was outstanding. Everything else we had (all fish on this occasion - cod and hake for main courses) were delightful. It is a little on the pricey side but worth it nonetheless. Would definitely recommend.
Be the first to ReplyDisappointing
It was my birthday ( I didnt tell the restaurant ) and I was looking forward to dinner with my wife and son. It was a disappointment. The service was a tad inefficient and chaotic. My starter Rarebit was overcooked with a lonely anchovy drowning on stale toast. Not good. But worse was two follow. I chose Pork Belly. It was tough and dry. I cook port belly ( I have an excellent butcher ) and can cook this dish ( and have my own apple sauce - no sign of that here ) far better. At the cost they chose this was a lazy poorly cooked dish. The bill was £180 for 3 and no wine. Two pints of beer ( one served from a can ) and a gin and tonic. Poor value but then there isnt much choice in the area which is probably why this pub survives/
Be the first to ReplyA thoroughly enjoyable evening
The overall ambience, on a damp and chilly evening, was warm and welcoming. The dining area is split into three separate areas, each with their own appeal. Staff were very professional. As a party of fourteen, we dined in the Aga room, which had a lovely, cosy and semi-private atmosphere. Every member of our group commented on how much they enjoyed their meal, both for presentation and flavour. Our previous visits were prior to Covid, and the food was pleasant, but not without fault. The current presentation is a significant improvement, and we would definitely recommend The Felinfach Griffin on the basis of our experience this evening; our group very much enjoyed a relaxed evening with very good food.
Be the first to ReplyComfortable friendly inn with excellent food
Comfortable well equipped room, all decor well designed and good quality. All staff extremely friendly and helpful. Dinner bed and breakfast package is good value. Food excellent. There was a problem with the electrical sockets in our room but we were given a discount and a free bottle of wine to compensate.
Be the first to ReplyFirst time visit.
Went for ad hoc lunch today and found a lovely pub with friendly staff . The lunchtime menu had a good choice . A plate of complimentary bread , including a lovely onion bread and a sour dough . I had fresh Local salmon with crab meat on a crumpet for starters, followed by pan fried Hake with baby onions . May have been nice to have some form of potato included, but was delicious. My wife had fish and chips that she said was excellent. The fish was beautiful and the batter light but crispy. As for the chips, they were plentiful so I was forced to help her out( so my potato wish was satisfied . The selection of cask ale was lovely and the wine for my wife was, according to her, great. Will not hesitate to book again be it lunch ot evening meal. Thank you for a lovey lunch
Be the first to ReplyNew Year’s Day Lunch - Excellent
Visited for Sunday Lunch on New Year’s Day. We really enjoyed our visit. The food was excellent. I found every element of my main course to be perfectly cooked and the presentation was excellent. On looking at the menu, I was a little concerned about the cut of beef (Rump) that was being served as I would not normally order this. However I need not have had any concern as it was wonderful, served pink and very tender. My wife had the slow cooked duck leg which was also excellent. The wine list is small, but interesting and we tried a bottle of Xinomavro, a Greek red which was very nice. Service was great too with friendly professional staff.
Be the first to ReplyDelicious festive feast
Thanks to the entire team at Felin Fach Griffin for a delicious festive lunch at their annual village feast. Food was light, flavoursome, seasonal and imaginative. The building was beautifully decorated for Christmas. The service was faultless: swift, attentive but never intrusive. Can't wait to book again. We've never been disappointed dining here.
Be the first to ReplyOverpriced, disappointing and rude staff
We were recommended the Felin Fach Griffin for an evening meal whilst on holiday in the Brecon Beacons. We did just book on this recommendation and didn’t realise how expensive it was!.. but it didn’t matter, as long as it was worth the price.. and it simply was not. Although the portion sizes were small, the food was nice.. it was the service which was VERY disappointing. The lady who greeted us was friendly but the bartender lacked any customer service! He brought our drinks over and wasn’t friendly at all and had a facial expression to match, so we were happy that that appeared to be the end of our interaction with him. Our mains came out very quick after our starters, which was fine, but then once we’d finished our mains, the waitress (same who greeted us) asked if we’d like desserts, and we didn’t, and we were immediately asked if we wanted the bill! My husband had half a pint left and we’d barely had our plates cleared!!! She brought the bill and left it on the table, hardly any minutes later and the bartender from earlier came over with a card machine with the bill amount typed in and held it out in front of my husband in a demanding demeanour! No interaction, nothing, only a funny unfriendly look given by him (no idea what his problem was). My husband didn’t say anything because we were celebrating my birthday and didn’t want anything to ruin it. But I was so angry to find out later that that bartender had come over with the bill already typed in INCLUDING the ‘optional’ 12.5% service charge in it!!! It added another £10 onto our bill !.. we wouldn’t have paid the 12.5% service charge because the service and experience wasn’t worth the price of the food, never mind the service on top!… and the guy barely served us (thank god) but then had the audacity to come over demanding payment pushing the card machine in front of my husband and we’d only just had our plates cleared.. we’d already had the bill forced upon us and then that! I mean, we had only been sat down for 50 minutes from walking in!!! And if you’re spending that much money, it would be nice to not be ushered out the door like some worthless customers you don’t value.. and presumably they weren’t interested in us because we weren’t drinking bottles of wine so not spending enough money for them and they just wanted us out the door. We’d never return and certainly would NOT recommend.
Be the first to ReplyRestaurant
What can I say? This is one of the best restaurants in wales! Superb food, amazing wine! Incredible staff who can’t do enough for you. I absolutely loved every moment. My only teeny weeny bit of feedback is that customers are asked if they want a break between meals as we had barely finished food and drinks when the next course came… but that is a minor criticism as the rest was perfect. It’s such a lovely place and we will definitely back for the whole hotel stay and meal experience! Thank you so much for a wonderful evening. I would recommend dishes but they change the menu every night.
Be the first to ReplyLovely way to spend a night
This is our third stay here, and as per our previous visits I would not hesitate to recommend to a friend. Good food, nice atmosphere, dog friendly, welcoming staff with well appointed rooms. The food was very good, but maybe on this occasion not quite 5* given the price. Out starter and main were also both served too quickly for a premium dining experience. That said, I accept I am being critical, and overall the quality and service was more than enough to bring me back next year.
Be the first to ReplyDelicious Food
Spent two nights in a "good room", whilst on the small side it has a large comfortable bed and decent sized bathroom. Food is excellent and service is great. Bar and restaurant have a nice vibe. Very dog friendly and no additional charge. We would happily recommend and return.
Be the first to ReplyFantastic stay
I booked the Griffin to stay at whilst on a course for Ty Mawr Lime which is only a short drive away. The rooms where tastefully decorated, clean and tidy and very comfortable. Dinner was amazing , a fantastic choice of meals ( I chose the Hake dish which is probably the best fish dish I've ever eaten ,cooked to perfection, well done to the chef ! ). A great selection of local beers, and a super atmosphere. Staff where friendly and welcoming and It was nice to see that they are supporting local suppliers.Well done to all and thank you
Be the first to ReplyLovely rooms and great food
We stayed two nights with dinner and breakfast , with 3 other couples , and were delighted by both the rooms and the food. Rooms were nicely decorated with very comfy beds , spacious bathrooms and nice toiletries. We liked the opportunity to take fresh milk to the room for morning tea. The breakfast was great - fresh and hearty. Dinner was particularly impressive as it was cooked outside on a bbq - as the extractor fans had broken in the kitchen. You would never have known- it was beautifully cooked with local fresh ingredients. We were given complimentary champagne to compensate us for the limited menu - but whilst it was gratefully consumed - it was not necessary as we were extremely impressed by the standard and choice. The staff were exceptionally helpful and friendly and made us feel very welcome and well looked after.
Be the first to ReplyDONT GO THERE
We were in our way up to Conwy where my wife grew up and where we have a townhouse inside the walls of the castle. We had seen such good reviews of Falin Fach that we thought it would be the perfect stop. There was a 3 meal deal on for Sunday so we took it. We arrived after our red eye flight fry SFO and were so looking forward to enjoying the area. Our room was ready. It was small and you needed to duck your head to get into the bathroom. It was also on the main highway and our room not only faced the highway but was over the bat. Needless to say we did not get a lot of rest. It was clean but very sparsely furnished. Wehad lunch and there was nothing on the VERY limited menu that I wanted to eat. The pork bellies that I finally selected wer inedible. My wife had the fish and it was so dry and overcooked that she could not eat it. The wine was even of poor quality and overpriced. What a start. We then went to the lady at the front desk and asked what we should see whil staying. She did not answer. It was as if she had never heard the question. And she was not some young recent hire. Finally she said there was a parade In the next town over. - But it was just about over. So we explored on our own. We found a little village and stumbled across an antique shop in an abandoned Baptist Chapel. It was so jammed with stuff that you could barely walk. What fun. And everything was 7-10 BPS. We came back to the Falin and thought let’s sit in the bar and have a drink. Can you believe there is no bar and any seating is at a dinner table. No space outside. No space inside! So we got a bottle of wine and went up to our small noisy room with only one chair so I had to sit on the bed. Then we noticed there was no TV. The information packet in the room said that if you wanted one it would be delivered to the room. Never happened and when we questioned why they said they could not find one. It gets worse. We went down to dinner thinking they will have a better menu WRONG. With the exception of one disn it was identical with lunch. Nothing Iwould eat not my wife. And we are not picky eaters. I asked if they could find a chop or steak and some potatoes and just grill it up. The answer came back from the chef. We only serve what is on the menu! So we ate some overcooked Veg and dry bread. We went up to bed and about 11 PM asked if the music could be turned down. Request fell on deaf ears. We finally got to sleep early in the morning. We went down to breakfast and there at least was a traditional English breakfast but everything else was no recognized. I asked for just the bacon, eggs and toast. I got the full breakfast. As we left we noticed the Hoover and a pile of cleaning supplies left inside the dining room entrance just sitting there. We tried to check out and they could not figure out the bill and the “deal”. As a last impression we walked back toward the “fresh herb garden” and there were planters full of weeds and no herbs What it appears is that the owners built the reputation of Falin and have now abandoned it and are focusing all their resources on their two new pubs. We did mention some of the larger issues with the management (not sure who that was) but it was clear they had no authority to make any changes. We are sorry to have to report but fellow travelers need to know that the website hype is no longer applicable.
Be the first to ReplyI had mixed opinions
In summary: good wine list, well cooked food, but poor choice of menu and service a bit lacking. Went here for a birthday lunch, and from reading previous reviews I expected better. The staff were fine but inexperienced (e.g. different staff repeatedly asking us the same thing, poor choice of seating etc). The menu wasn't great and some options strange (e.g. the "fish pie" wasn't pie, it was just fish in a bowl of sauce - although cooked very well). So overall, it wasn't bad, it just wasn't very good.
Be the first to ReplyWeekday lunch
Quite disappointing. Not a great deal of choice, both went for fish and chips. Batter was very light but also quite greasy and no taste to the actual fish! After first bite could taste that chips had been fried in old fat! Best bit was tartare sauce!
