The Devonshire London Reviews from The Last Year
Overrated!
I must find out who does the PR and marketing for the Devonshire as they are very successful promoting this very average restaurant. It is challenging to secure a reservation and i was trying to impress friends from out of town. Once i secured the booking, i got several reminders not to be late and they would not hold the table. When i arrived, my table was not ready as it was occupied by the previous guests. It took 15 minutes to get us seated. Not ideal given the restaurant warned ME several times not to be late. Staff are clearly overworked as it took a further 10- 15 minutes to get a wine list. What about the food? £29 for bland and overcooked Turbot! I was told not to order a side sauce as it comes with clarified butter. It does not. My friend's Iberian pork was way too salty. Finally, tried to use the restrooms in the restaurant at the end of the meal and i was told to use the pub restrooms downstairs as they were already clearing out the dining room (this was at 11:10pm -- not that late seeing as we were not seated until after 9pm... I won't be returning.
A good one
Very good indeed. Service was to the point and practical. I agree with another reviewer below re having realistic expectations - it’s a pub restaurant not a high end Mayfair establishment!!! The food was excellent and very well presented. Portion sizes also good , which is becoming an issue these days when eating out ! Would def recommend and will def return !
Must reserve table
Brilliant food ... as you would expect ! We shared Iberico pork ribs, pork chops and lamb cutlets. They were all delicious. Peppercorn sauce, chips and buttered carrots to accompany. Really good. We had a 3pm reservation on a Saturday and the place was packed !
Best steak in London
Excellent steak best I had in London and some in much more expensive establishments than the Devonshire the soufflé desert is absolutely divine and of course the Guinness tops it all off. Highly recommended
Top notch English pub grub
Went here as a party of 7. Atmosphere , service food and drink all great. Everyone enjoyed their food. I had scallops, pie with mash and sticky toffee pudding. All were great. Service was relaxed and certainly not rushed. Atmosphere is unpretentious. Prices are reasonable for quality and location. Only small gripe is the tables are a bit rammed in but hey it’s a popular place so can be forgiven. Highly recommend.
Incredible quality, professional service in a super friendly and casual environment
Absolutely phenomenal lunch at the Devonshire. Great atmosphere, fantastic professional staff and above all delicious food at reasonable prices. The pub offers casual and simple food that shines based on the high quality of the ingredients handled with care and attention by the kitchen. Everything about the Devonshire screams perfection. I had the prawn cocktail, skirt steak with béarnaise and the best chips ever and finished with the most amazing sticky toffee pudding. All this for a ridiculous £29! Will definitely be back!
Mixed Opinions
Was really looking forward to eating here after being intoxicated by their social media. Unfortunately, in my opinion, the food was of mixed quality. Most of my companions enjoyed their meals but my rib-eye was rendered inedible to me because of truly ridiculous amount of salt they’d used to season it. However, I divi’d it up and a couple of the others liked it so i guess its all down to your personal palette. Same with the desert - is it an oxymoron to say that my sticky toffee was way , way too sweet? 😂 We were located on the top floor of the pub and the curtains they’d strung around the walls and non-descript artwork made it all feel like a very temporary pop up so no great ambience. Am I a moaner? No. Did I complain? No, as in the scheme of things it’s not really a big deal I suppose and we had a good craic nonetheless. Would I go back - yes but I’d make sure to tell them to use less seasoning next time. 👍🏻
Unbearably hot, not possible to sit for long, bad dessert
Unfortunately we were seated in front of a very hot oven fire and additionally a grill cooking meat with no ventilation. No staff were anywhere near where we were seated. We quickly discovered the previous people in our seat had just asked to move for the same reason - unbearable heat, but they sat us there anyway on a hot summer early evening. They took our money and even added their service for an unbearable experience . We had to get up and walk around and left as soon as possible. There place is crowded and they don’t care about the people. We saw a table come free after quickly eating our mains and asked to move. The waiter had to go ask someone in another floor if we were allowed to move for dessert! It was a mistake anyway as dessert is very poor like a tiny piece of dry cake cut in a square with sauce and a very bland chocolate mouse, which was pretty weird for the cost. I contacted them about the seating and waiting for a proper reply. It’s negligent. The previous man sitting in my seat also said he felt ill from being there and had to leave the room. This is a health and safety problem and just awful for what was meant to be an enjoyable night out in soho.
Could eat here every week
Aside a 30min wait for our table, the Devonshire is a great package. A humming bar downstairs spilling onto the pavement and upstairs refined restaurant. The menu has something for all - Iberico ribs, langoustine & prawn salad, scallops & bacon. Sadly the turbot was off that night, so lobster & steak instead. The Devonshire Rosé was perfect and Sam’ service was cheerful and attentive.
Outstanding food and staff
Outstanding food. Possibly the best roast beef I have ever eaten. Superb Guinness. Excellent, friendly staff. Shout out to Will for looking after us so well.
Book the night before
I was dying to try this place but it was impossible to get a booking!! Then my friend told me try the night before for the next day reservation and try for the week day lunch. It worked the magic and we got a table for lunch on Thursday. We got the famous Guinness and i must confess it tastes like Evian! So refreshing!! The food was really really good as well. Lamb was the most succulent and packed with flavours. We made sure we still had room for their sticky toffee pudding. Please make sure you get it too as its the best sticky toffee pudding!!
Not good enough, sadly.
Great front of house staff. Good food. Good ambience. Really slow delivery which is a shame. My drink took eternity and needed chasing. We ordered one course of food, very simple, took the best part of an hour, after chasing. There are many better places around, and it’s a shame as this could be really good, but I wouldn’t rush back after that experience.
Great Food, The Grill Room Is A Mistake.
First time eating at The Devonshire, even though I walk past it a lot and come 5pm, it's ten deep outside with people enjoying a drink. It has also just been recently named as the best Gastro Pub of the year, along with Opening of The Year at the same event. Best Gastro Pub after just a few months? There is one thing about our country, we invented the Gastro Pub and there's stiff competition up and down this great land of ours. Reputation takes time to achieve and not because it's in London and handy for the people who vote for these awards! Anyway, I went with an open mind and also buoyed by the fact it is associated with Ashley Palmer-Watts; of The Fat Duck and Dinner fame. The welcome wasn't the best if I'm honest, the lady on the front desk was very dismissive with us because we were early and she was sorting those people turning up for their time slot. We just sat in the bar for a pre-drink, so no problem. Our table was in The Grill room on the first floor and was a bit overwhelming really, not because it was busy (it wasn't) or loud, it has a fire box at the back of the room and grills to the side. The food is cooked over red hot embers, produced from the roaring fire box. It's a spectacle but even sat at almost the furthest point away from it in the room, it was unbearably hot. There are actually tables about seven feet away from it and they must be horrendous. The other issue I had was the smoke being produced, my eyes watered throughout service. The extraction isn't powerful enough and the acrid smoke is escaping across the ceiling, turning it black. I couldn't spend much time in this room even with the sash windows letting in limited air. This needs a rethink. Best Gastro Pub??? My clothes stunk of smoke and my eyes didn't stop watering for at least another hour. SO the food then, well, that's where this place does shine. My starters of: Scallops with bacon and malt vinegar, followed by a main of Beef cheek/Guinness suet pudding with sides of: Duck fat chips and Creamed leeks, were brilliant. So much flavour in all of it. No issues with the food at all, including a nice little mini loaf of bread to mop up the juices. The other excellent standout is the price. Very, very good for Soho, with prices no worse than I'm paying in my extremely excellent local gastro pubs/restaurants back home. Service was great and there's a very good selection of drinks with high end wines if you so choose. For starter and main, plus drinks with service charge, we paid £73 a head. Definitely up there for the food but I would have to refuse The Grill room if I ever come again.
Outstanding
We had a reservation for Father’s Day late lunch. I had heard such great things about this place and was worried the hype may lead to disappointment but it did not disappoint at all! The Guinness was worth the hype (according to my husband!). I can not fault the service, we were offered a table on the roof terrace or the dining room and we went for the roof terrace as it was a lovely day. It was tranquil above the bustling Soho streets. Our waitress was friendly, helpful and attentive but gave us space and we didn’t feel rushed at all. The food was the best Sunday roast we have had. The beef served at your table, was delicious and cooked to perfection. Enough food for all 4 of us and the whole meal was a 10/10. Don’t get put off thinking it is just for insta it really isn’t, the atmosphere is great, has a real London pub feel with the outstanding standard of restaurant food.
Amazing pub - don’t overthink it
Went to the pub and loved the vibe. Their main problem is that they are too hyped up and people have strange expectations. The pub food is excellent, the steak sandwich and the scotch egg are above par for pub food at a reasonable price. The Guinness is delicious. What do you want? Come in, have fun, be part of the Devonshire experience. I take people all the time, everyone likes it.
I WAS EXPECTING BETTER!!
Read all the reviews about this newish restaurant/chef and having booked at the very moment the website opened for our particular date couldnt wait to try. We had a Guinness in the pub downstairs which was excellent and brilliantly drawn by the barman. So to the restaurant upstairs..... We both had potted shrimps and found the portion a little small and i have had better. For mains, i had the Iberico chop and friend had the Beef pudding we shared sides which were delicious. He said his pudding was superb, but sadly my chop was very fatty and in my opinion a little undercooked. For desserts, he had the souflette, which i wish i had ordered having chosen the bread & butter pudding which was tiny and far too creme caramel-ish. We shared a cheese plate which was plentiful and good selection. The wines were very good and very well priced and overall the bill was exceptionally reasonable even including service for four courses and wine. Finally, service was quick and friendly. However, would i return......not totally sure.
Great Guinness, mediocre food
I was at the Devonshire last Sunday with a group of 6. We got the booking a month in advance and was excited to try it. We were shown to our table and it was 25 minutes before we got a drink (Guinness or water!). Two of us had brought a drink from the bar downstairs - but this was poor. The staff were overstretched. Starters we had the prawn pate and the smoked salmon - both fine but nothing special and a small portion. The one choice of beef - was mediocre. A little on the cool side and a small portion. We should have been offered a second slice really. The roast potatoes were far too overcooked and crispy. The carrots were burnt (looked like sweet potato!). Gravy was nice but a small portion, other sides of peas and leeks were nice. But overall, I’ve had much better roast dinners for a lot cheaper. The service was poor. The staff are overstretched and on my return from the toilet - found them swearing at each other. I’d definitely return for the Guinness but would give the food a skip.
Fabulous steak !! Loved it here.
Brilliant 🤩 can’t wait to return! Had a fantastic dinner in a great restaurant with lovely service. Would come back in a heartbeat 💗
Birthday treat
Service excellent, food delicious, Guinness a delight, good selection of wine, a perfect family birthday celebration!
Food ok, but completely ruined by awful service/ lack of service.
We were left sat waiting for 15 minutes before we could order a drink and were never even given a wine menu. The two tables either side of us who sat down after us had already received their drinks, so we were asking the servers who gave their drinks if we could order and they kept saying they would get our waiter. He never came. Then we saw him go to the table next to us, again who sat down after us, so I got up and asked someone else to take our order. Our food then arrived, and was lovely, however we were trying to ask for sauces for ages until another server came with them for the table next to us so we were able to get some. Also I if gravy was served in inch wide little pots and again one the two tables next to us, they were each given a full gravy boat. I’m not suggesting there was any reason for this poor treatment but the difference was stark and needless to say I have no intention of returning. It then took fifteen minutes to get the bill and then they had the nerve to charge 12 pounds in service when it’s truly feels like we don’t receive any.

I have a notice stating that my bid has been accepted and is awaiting transfer. The reservation is for the 18th, but the “moderator” said he will confirm booking by the 28th. Is this an indicator that I may not have a reservation?

Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
