The Canteen Stroud Reviews from The Last Year
Hidden Gem
Fell upon the cafe by accident, looking around a shop and ventured downstairs to find it! Quirky feel about it, food was great and dog friendly. Definitely check it out again when we visit again.
Just the ticket for lunch with friends
A fabulous celebratory lunch with friends in a very cool setting and great vibes. We enjoyed a delicious lunch and were delighted to be able to book at table for ten. Absolutely scrumptious food and such a quirky and colourful space, great service and clearly the food was made with very high quality ingredients, much of which was locally sourced. Highly recommend.
Lovely quirky cafe, just right for lunch
In the basement of the wonderful shop that is Domestic Science can be found the iadjoining cafe “The Canteen” which serves the best locally sourced food, cakes and coffee. Like the rest of the building the cafe follows the interior room placement of the mill and stretches across two completely separate rooms. With it’s quirky interior and comfortable sofas, chairs and tables I thoroughly enjoyed my restful lunch of smoked mackerel pate, sourdough bread, capers and rocket followed by “Persian Love Cake” and as requested an extra hot decaf, skinny cappuccino! My husband chose a newly baked scone having devoured his toasted sandwich
DISAPPOINTING
Where do you begin. Walked in to eat and the available tressle tables were covered in plates of uneaten food, beverage cups etc. We have seen cleaner tables after young children have eaten! Menu boards are so haphazard you need to photograph them before ordering. We have eaten there a number of times before refurbishment and it seems quirky has been replaced with a shambles of a cafe.....you cannot call it a restaurant.
Quirky, terrific place to enjoy a meal or just coffee
What an amazing place, unfortunately we arrived just as the kitchen closed however waited 10 mins and then sampled the biggest, tastiest cheese and parsley scone..delicious. The ambience was terrific, so busy with locals and visitors.cant wait to go earlier and have lunch next time. Dog friendly too
Quirky Cafe
Really quirky coffee shop and restaurant. I had a flat white and a croissant cake thing which was like a posh bread and butter pudding. Both were excellent and I would definitely return. The staff were charming, there was a cute area for little ones with books and toys too
NOT A NICE LUNCH!
WHAT A TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE! My son took me out for lunch on Saturday - what a lovely surprise! But ........... we decided to try The Canteen having not visited there for some time. The weather had turned and the temperature had dropped so not very warm. We ordered - me - cheese on toast and my son a breakfast and two glasses of water. And we decided to take a cake away with us - not a great deal of choice considering it was a Saturday - busy. Question - why is it only an option of vegan cakes? what about us that enjoy a 'normal' slice of cake! We were instructed to take a table at the back but as we approached we were told not to sit there but follow the arrows to another dining area. There were lamps hanging from the ceiling and nearly everyone my son hit his head! Seems like anyone that is over 5ft 6 will have an issue! The table was grubby and the area was cold not helped by the doors being opened and closed (or left open by inconsiderate customers leaving) by staff coming in and out with orders! Our lunches arrived - oh dear! My cheese on toast was in fact masses of cheese in a toasted sour bread sandwich. There was soooooo much cheese - far too much and on the side was a pile of tomato and cucumber - which looked like an after thought? But .............my sons well..... considering it was £15 - it looked unedible! The bacon was frazzled and burnt. The tomato was burnt. The mushrooms had died and were a mush! The sausage was burnt black on one side and the toast was so hard too! thankfully the poached egg was runny (ish). My son did not enjoy his big breakfast and neither did i enjoy my so called cheese on toast! The ambience was not nice either - cold and grubby and the seating - metal chairs uncomfortable. Would we go back - no! Would we recommend - no!
Lunchtime treat.
Food looks very presentable and rather appetising plus great value for the price we paid.Value for money and more size than what we expected but we'll presented.
Quirky and interesting
This is a really interesting place full of eclectic furniture and fittings. The food is really good if a little slow in coming. Definí worth a visit
Quirky and Elclectic
Visited today with a group of friends. An absolute unique and quirky restaurant. The food was delicious, plentiful and averagely priced. A very worthwhile visit
