The Black Pearl Newport Reviews from The Last Year
Both my drink and clam chowder were amazing and the service
Both my drink and clam chowder were amazing and the service was equally just as great!
After hearing how good the food, specifically the clam
After hearing how good the food, specifically the clam chowder, was here, I decided this would be the perfect place for my wife and I to enjoy our anniversary dinner. It took me several attempts to make a reservation, which was frustrating, but I was finally able to get in at 7:00 on a Sunday night. The dining room is rather small, and a bit dark, but it could be romantic I guess. The server was a bit unhelpful; she seemed more interested in just getting our order and moving on than she was in answering our questions. I thought the prices were a bit high for what you get. We ordered the chowder and then shared the whitefish. The fish was ok, but a bit bland. It was served over orzo that was just a bit undercooked to be al dente. The chowder was good, but we had better for less and several other places while we were in town. Overall we were disappointed, and I felt like I still owed my wife a fancy anniversary dinner. Given there are a lot of other places that we visited and enjoyed more, we probably won't return.
What a charming place.
I felt like we were tucked away in the hull of the ship. Erica was our very accommodating and friendly waitress. She was such a treat. I asked her to surprise me with drink and the espresso martini did not disappoint. My friend and I both enjoyed the delicious New England clam chowder. They truly deserve to be famous for it! Flavorful with tons of clam pieces. I personally am not a clam person, but certainly enjoy a savory NE clam chowder. On to the entrees ~ I ordered the salmon and could not have been more pleased. Honestly, I WANT to like salmon, but often do not care for the end result. Thank goodness this was such a treat, every morsel was juicy and balanced with the other flavors of the dish. My friend challenged herself to try the scallops and Brussels (even though she can be very picky about Brussels). The dish was exquisite! I tried a bite of her scallops & a Brussel sprout and I soooo wished that I could have ordered her dish as well as my own! It was amazing. The portions were "just right" for these hungry ladies who had not eaten since breakfast (it was now around 5/530PM). We also, being on vacation, did not prefer to carry leftovers away. Still.... I was so tempted to order that scallops entree! Thank you, Erica, for being such an awesome credit to your team. We will most definitely come here on our next trip and highly recommend to others.
Dinner at the Black Pearl
We had dinner in the Tavern and they were very busy. It was small and quaint. Service was excellent. We both had scallops and they were fantastic. My only complaint was that there were no substitutions allowed. They were served with grits and brussel sprouts, so we each ended up paying six dollars for sides. I have not experienced that before. Regardless, I would recommend this restaurant...just know before you go.
Soooo good! I had the scallops and they were perfect.
Great service. All in a place that feels casual but has top class food.
We have been going to the Black Pearl for years and years.
We remember when you could count on consistently good chowder, the best chowder anywhere. Yesterday, not so much. Sent it back as it was cold and runny, lacking flavor. Nothing like it used to be. Sent it back, it was delivered a second time seemingly microwaved. Adding insult to injury was the obnoxious table of 8 drunken adults with no manners and when we discussed this with the manger she refused to intervene, despite the numerous complaints from other patrons. Inevitably, it didn't end well when the drunken adults became loud and vocal with us for noticing our complaint to the manager. They ruined our experience and that of many others. They were so loud we couldn't hear each other speak. The waitress was a dream, wish I remembered her name. Had it not been for her and her pleasant demeanor and excellent service I wouldn't have much good to say. $387 total on our bill.
Been a customer since 1976.
Today was a sad day. Clams casino were grease bombs with zero flavor. First round of clam chowder was cold, sent back, obviously microwaved. Obnoxious crowd in the dining room and Manager refused to even try to ask them to behave. Sad day, do not waste your money ($378.00 for 4). HORRIBLE.
Pretty good.
Had the clam chowder and a Corona. I think they forgot our clam chowder at first cause all the complex food came out before it... and we reminded... but it's all good. Was good enjoyed our time :) Service quick, ambiance nice

The oysters were smaller than expected and the salad and Alfredo were alright. The vanilla creme brûlée and drinks were good though.
Not what we were expecting
Went to celebrate our 35th wedding anniversary. Had checked menu online, got there and none of the things we wanted were on the menu. They do not put their menu online, it is through other websites. Food was average and expensive. Our main course came before our appetizer. We won't be going back!
So sad what has happened to this place.
It used to be so good. Now, the kitchen can't handle the volume of people they are trying to serve. The chowder was lukewarm and watery. The food in general is really hit and miss. You go for the vibe and experience but not for the food. Lobster still great (hard to mess that up) but they need to pay more attention to the other menu items and overall quality and presentation. It's bordering on a food kitchen/dining hall experience now.
Their chowder is amazing.
I had the lobster it was really good. The prices were very reasonable but we did go in December I'm sure they up the prices in July. Service was very good. We had reservations but still have to wait a bit. All in all a good experience.
Great spot for lunch.
The seafood is fresh, there is plenty of outdoor seating and great views. The staff was friendly and prices reasonable.
Fabulous
Amazing location, atmosphere, service, and food! I had the clam chowder and lobster ravioli, and my husband had oysters and the swordfish special. Everything was wonderful. Romantic/adult setting that is not the best for kids, though there were a lot of bored looking/acting kids with their families while we dined there. I felt sorry for the servers (and myself) at times. While there are several child-friendly restaurants in the area, this isn’t one of them.
What happened? I've been coming here for 40 plus years.
They had the best chowder and a fantastic burger. The menu has changed, sadly. The Tavern Burger which replaced the Pearl Burger isn't even close. Fries were few and had been hanging around for a while before being served. All the dill that used to be in the chowder is gone. So sad to mess with such a wonderful place.
Really good restaurant.
Service was fantastic -- great drinks. Salmon, Swordfish, Clam Chowder all very well prepared and super tasty... will be back.
I can't clam up... the Chowder is #1 on the planet, but a full lunch will cost you quite a few clams as well.
If you have never been to the Black Pearl, it is a gem. The chowder (which is creamy New England style, not the clear Rhode Island type) is unparalleled, #1 and my old #2 long since underwater. Lunch for 6 (four adults and two smaller children) was still North of $200 pre-tip, so my recommendation is to have a cup (bowl is too much) of chowder and a beer or wine and then do it again the next day (or later the same day as the younger people did). Come out of your shell and get down to the Pearl.
Award worthy clam chowder
We heard rave reviews about the clam chowder so we stopped in for take out. I'm happy to report the reviews are accurate and the chowder is delicious. Next time we may eat in for a full meal.
Over rated chowder
Supposedly the chowder is the best in Newport, not IMO Husbands mussel and Brussels hood. Not the best or worst. They have a great outdoor space, may have been a better lunch choice.
On the Warf
Order the swordfish sandwich and thinking it would be a thickish piece of fish I asked that it be cooked medium. What I received was a thin, overdone disappointment. Sadly the bread was the best part of the meal. Too bad, this could be a better experience.
Not as expected
Great venue. Friendly staff…food not what expected. Basically, the food sucked. Chowder was very thin and the BLT was bad.
Great food and professional service
This restaurant is a Newport institution; it sits right on the wharf and has fantastic views of the water. It gets super busy here, especially on weekends, so make a reservation or be prepared to wait. We got a table after a 15-minute wait, but the food was worth it. The menu is pretty big, so there's something for most people. We shared the stuffed mushrooms, salmon filet, and the cod, and everything was incredible! Really good service as well: our waitress was friendly and attentively professional. Prices reflect the quality of the restaurant. We enjoyed lingering over our meal so we could enjoy the views.
Do not waste your money.
Over priced and limited menu. The website advertised clam chowder at one price but was actually double. No bread was available either.
Great clam chowder
Great clam chowder. Nice outdoor dining. Must stop here for lunch or afternoon cocktail. Reservations for dinner. Will always return to The Pearl.
