Superb food service and value for money…
The staff could not be more welcoming or accommodating… They interact at just the right level with a great sense of humour but remain utterly professional.. The service is immaculate discrete attentive… The food is not only art on a plate but tastes fabulous… fresh interesting exciting flavours and colours… ignore the naysayers ..they are always with us… This place is buzzing … Fresh clean ambience… Lovely fresh flowers on every table… The Hungarian wine was delicious and very well priced… We have rebooked immediately… We feel well placed to assess working in high end hospitality …we know what it takes!!! The Angel Hotel and Restaurant was fantastic! Attentive staff from the entrance into the Hotel. Had an overnight stay with the Winter Gourmet taster menu Each course was super tasty and enjoyed the wine pairing with the course which made the whole meal very special ! Another Michelin star restaurant that exceeds great food and service! Highly recommend this place! We shall be back soon.
Be the first to ReplyKeeping up standards but missing something
We have visited on many an occasion and always loved the food and service, the food seems to be a little samey and they are missing their usual attentive service staff. Resting on their laurels and missing that personal friendly touch that we have experienced in the past.

We called to the Angel Inn for a drink and were so disappointed to find it had been overly modernised to Scandi design. This is the heart of the Yorkshire Dale's not a restaurant in the City. There's no atmosphere and the staff miserable. Paid a disgraceful £16.25 for a 175ml glass of Rioja. It's not an inn now for someone calling for a drink

Two of us had dinner in this expansive restaurant. Taster menu was fine if a little on the safe side. Service was fine.
Be the first to ReplyTop food, top room, top stay!
We recently stayed in White Doe and had the taster menu and were utterly blown away with both the room and the food. The room was spacious (with a seperate 'living area') and was warm and well-appointed. The taster menu was utterly delicious, with each course being delightful - there really was not one I would have again. The donuts at the end were a particular highlight, though! We also found that the drinks were suprisingly reasonably priced and not extortinate like many similar places. We also enjoyed breakfast in the morning. It was a slightly unique service, in that it was offered more like a taster menu. Personally I would have probably preferred something a little more traditional but it was very tasty nonetheless.

We had the 7 course tasting menu for dinner with snacks, bread and drinks pairing. The food was outstanding with the scallop and squab dishes being the most memorable. The drinks pairing was very nice and something different with its mix of wine, beer and cider. The service was smooth and friendly. A very memorable experience altogether.
Be the first to ReplyThe essence of fine dining
My Wife and our Jack Russel visited for lunch. The dog was welcomed in manor she thought befitted her as all Jacks believe themselves to be human We enjoyed a superb tasting menu served by extremely courthouse staff. We are retuning with our friends early in 2023 to enjoy more fine food

Visited with a group of friends and dined in the new restaurant. The ambience is lovely and this is matched by the decor and the lovely roaring fire. We opted for the tasting menu, three of us meat eaters and my friend a pescatarian and all menus were filled with seasonal dishes we were very much impressed by. We all opted for the "Drinks package" too, it was different to some we have had previously as it was not a wine but an alcoholic drink, and so the meal began. The server Helen was very attentive explaining some of the unknown elements in great detail and being genuinely interested in us and attentive to our needs. The food was delivered by some young souls (a boy and girl) whom were a credit: superbly presented, extremely knowledgeable and superbly spoken. The drinks package was delivered with cards to help us understand the choices, the delivery a little lacklustre by the sommelier who seemed a little bored in her delivery just regurgitating what she had said to the table next to us, however the drinks kept coming and made for a complete experience. top of the list were the desserts: outstanding in flavours and presentation and my goodness the coffee and treats! something that will remain with us all for a long time.
Be the first to ReplyWonder relaxing Autumn tasting
A Wonderful afternoon was spent at the Angel inn enjoying the Autumn tasting menu. lovely relaxed atmosphere where we felt very comfortable and looked after. Food was exceptional. Definitely has the feel of a 2 star these days. With the cost of living, my trips out for great food are limited, but I'll be back for the Winter Tasting as soon as it arrives.

We visited for my birthday dinner in March and had wonderful evening.
Loved the minimalist decor and the service was top notch (if a little over friendly - are you doing anything nice tomorrow - did make me feel like I was at the hairdresser’s).
We loved the fact there was a choice of A La Carte or tasting menu so we did not have to do down the tasting menu that Michelin guide restaurants are so fond of.
The food was amazing, so beautifully presented and tasted out of this world. We would have loved a little pre - dessert, felt that was missing and would have been a nice touch.
Overall, fabulous. We hope to come back and stay over next time to sample the breakfast.
Beautiful food but under seasoned and still hungry
This chef clearly has an excellent reputation as he’s held numerous stars prior to The Angel but on this occasion it felt like style over substance.
With the financial backing this place had its had a heck of a lot of money invested into it and it’s certainly of the highest standard! They were renovating part of the restaurant at the time of our visit
We stayed over but unfortunately we were in one of the older rooms awaiting refurbishment. (We visited 2021) we stayed in the cottage next door to the restaurant. the room was tired and the bed was really lumpy. But hopefully all the rooms are finished now to the same standard as the restaurant!
The tasting menu was a real disappointment, we had such high hopes as we have visited previously for Sunday lunch a few years back which we enjoyed.
The food looked amazing, colourful, beautifully presented but there was very little flavour and no seasoning. It was just all very odd. We had really expected to be blown away. Maybe an off night? Or were we expecting too much? But we went to bed still hungry, I know everyone has different appetites, we don’t like to feel stuffed, but after an 8 course tasting menu I thought we might have at least felt satisfied
Staff were lovely and friendly. One young girl took our order for drinks and we were told they didn’t sell it so we requested a drinks menu to choose something else only to find that it WAS listed! Maybe she was new?
The sommelier we felt really saved the evening. She was sweet, passionate and she had made some really interesting delicious choices, one of the most interesting was the mead.
Perfect weekend getaway
From the moment you arrive, everything is made easy for you, it's hard to find the correct term but there has clearly been a lot of thought gone in to the entire stay, not just the cooking, which allows you to relax and enjoy the stay with not a care in the world, it's the small things like electric car charging, and a local walking map that whilst small on their own right, are greater than the sum of their parts in creating the weekend.
We came back from one of their suggested walks and checked in to a comfortable room, we had our dog with us in one of their dog friendly rooms, and they provide food/ water bowls, towels and a big comfortable dog bed.
There was a good coffee machine, TV, well appointed bathroom, robes and a very comfortable bed, there's obviously a signature scent as well and they provide that with shower gel/ shampoo/ conditioner/ lotion which is a lovely touch, I actually liked the smell so much that I'm going to buy some for myself!
I headed over to the bar with my dog, and in my view, they've got the vibe absolutely spot on, it's contemporary and comfortable with a nod to the rustic, but more importantly, the locals are clearly encouraged to drink there and there's seemingly no strict dress code, which I think suited it really well - the diners for the most part were well dressed, but you wouldn't be turned away or made to feel uncomfortable in jeans which is great, it avoids the stuffy nature of some restaurants and both my wife and I said it's the first time we've actively wanted to have a further drink in the bar afterwards due to it feeling so comfortably, we were actually joined by a couple who were on the table next to us and another couple ended up in conversation, too - which was a lovely end to the evening.
As for the food itself, this was our 5th Michelin star, and 3rd in 5 months, and I'd say it was absolutely up to standard, some of the cooking was technically superb and the flavours were fantastic. We also had the drinks package, which was a great choice and well paired and presented by gentleman who's looking after wine whilst they're looking for a sommelier, it wasn't worse for not currently having one by any means, all of the wait staff were fantastic and found the line between perfect service and being personable.
I'd also want to point out that their attitude towards dietary requirements was fantastic, we weren't made to feel awkward as we have been before at other restaurants, and there was a very well judged opportunity to check we're happy with all the courses by means of a printed menu that you check before service starts, a subtle and unobtrusive way to put your guests at ease that many should adopt.
The 'tasting breakfast' the next day is a lovely touch, too - and adds to the feel of a weekend experience rather than a dining experience, the entire weekend felt like a little cocoon of content with sublime cooking.
There are a couple of points I would suggest to the team there;
More coffee in the rooms, even just leave some spare pods in the drawers. I'm absolutely certain they would have brought more if we asked, but a little more would have been gratefully appreciated.
We were in the 'far' dining room, and towards the end of the meal as everyone was a little merrier, it became harder to talk to each other, the room could do with some sound management and soft surfaces to make it feel a bit more intimate.
Coffee at breakfast, the earthenware is gorgeous, but the coffee was poor which was a shame.
I would struggle to speak more highly of it, it was fantastic value for money, and on balance of all factors this has been our favourite Michelin experience and that is very, very high praise.
Nice but over priced
Service great, setting lovely, food very nice.
Portions very small even for Michelin starred tasting menu.. especially considering the price tag. If every course had blown my mind I wouldn’t have minded leaving slightly hungry but I would say everything was good but nothing was amazing. Pork dish was delicious. Wine flight was decent.
Divine...
A one night stay. A lovely room, amazing dinner (beautifully judged), excellent service and, to cap it all, a tasting menu at breakfast! What an experience.
The hare black pudding is worth the visit alone.
Family visit with children - amazing
This is my first visit to The Angel, a birthday meal with my husband and 2 children (11 and 13).
This was their first fine dining Michelin experience, and what a way to start their journey.
The food was outstanding, we all had the tasting lunch menu, which I think is amazing value for money.
The staff were so friendly, informative and completely unpretentious. The restaurant was very relaxed and nobody felt self conscious.
Well done to the Angel for being one of the only fine dining restaurants to openly embrace children, it’s an amazing idea to help encourage young taste buds to develop and hopefully continue to enjoy amazing food 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Salt
The evening tasting menu was perfect. This was the second visit and we’ll certainly return. Food and service equally good. The tasting menu for breakfast was innovative but no matter how well you season your food as a chef, you cannot season a boiled egg within its shell! Eggs require salt and for this reason, salt should be provided at the breakfast table.

Our Xmas present to each other and we were not disappointed !
We stayed one night and had the tasting menu. The food was wonderful and served by very friendly, knowledgeable staff at the right pace.
The portions look small but trust me, they were excellent and by the end of the evening we were full.
The restaurant is minimalistic but beautifully designed and very comfortable.
We stayed in The Sycamore suite next door to the restaurant and it was exceptionally clean and tidy.
We had everything we needed for a comfortable stay and the views from the room are to die for !
A big thanks to Michael and his amazing team , we will return !
What a transformation ?
The Angel Inn has been a favorite for many years in its former status of a traditional country inn with gastro food. However the transformation by the current owners to the Michelin Star restaurant with rooms was amazing.
We had the tasting menu with every course cooked and served to perfection. The wine pairings were first class. Cant wait for our next visit.
Nearly perfect...
Food and service, faultless. Tasting menu was the right size portions and drinks pairings were very well matched with some surprising choices. Service was the perfect balance of attentive and relaxed. I do have two minor gripes, I was sat against a radiator and the dining room had a fire lit so I was quite hot throughout, only a problem for one seat in the restaurant I'd guess, just unfortunately for me it was mine. Also, the acoustic is really bad. It was difficult to talk at a level so not to impact nearby tables but still be heard by my partner. This also affected wine and food descriptions. Both of these things withstanding, still full marks. Felt like very good value appropriate for the beautiful quintessentially Yorkshire setting. I'll look forward to a return visit.
