Pretentious much? The host literally laughed in my face when I inquired about making reservations for a future date. I'll be taking my money elsewhere.
Be the first to ReplyI wish I lived in Porto.
The food was phenomenal. The service was great and place had a warm ambiance. My 9 year old daughter loved the shrimp! I managed to try 1 piece before she at the rest. We loved the Octopus over rice as well...we scraped the dish clean.

We only waited about 25 min after getting in line before opening and missed being in the first group of tables. The wait was worth it and everything was so good--high contender for being my favorite meal in Portugal. Service was great and quick, and the inside was really cute. Very very small, but homey, which we liked over the hype of the bigger flashy restaurants.

We came 10-15 minutes prior to opening time and it wasn't early enough to make it for the first seating. We ended up waiting almost 2 hours for a table so my tip is to come early (maybe 30 minutes before opening). We ordered the pastel de bacalhau (3,00), shrimp (9,00), octopus salad (11,00), Seafood rice (38,00) and a meringue pie (4,00). The portion size here is very generous. Our favourite dishes were definitely the shrimp and the octopus salad. The seafood rice had a lot of seafood in it and that itself could definitely feed 4 people. I would recommend you come here with 4 people as their portion sizes are quite large. The dessert was okay - not our cup of tea. I would want to try the flan next time. If you want to visit, I would recommend coming early or you will be stuck waiting. They do around 1 and a half seatings during lunch before they close. They had to turn people away after the second seating.
Be the first to ReplyEverything was delicious.
waiter recommended a bottle of wine that was outstanding. We got the cod, lamb ribs, and lemon meringue. It was a bit confusing outside because they only have limited seating and the door is locked and you just have to wait outside in line until they call you in. Staff is very friendly and it's just a wonderful vibe. Did i mention the food is outstanding.
Be the first to ReplyThe best meal we've had in Porto so far, and we've been
The best meal we've had in Porto so far, and we've been really pleasantly surprised by Portuguese food! Taberna makes me want to stay longer here... just for the food! We arrived half an hour before opening time, since we knew that a line was highly likely (having read the reviews). And indeed, many people started queueing up right after us! Fortunately we were first in line, and were the first to get seated in this tiny, cavern-like restaurant. There are only 4 tables that can each seat 2 people or so... making the full restaurant capacity only 8!! Wow! Were we blown away by the food. For starters, we ordered a codfish croquette, clams in oil, and fish soup. For mains, we shared the seafood rice (for 2 people). The codfish croquette was served first, and it came piping hot and freshly fried. The texture was crispy on the outside, soft and mashed on the inside, but also with some sinewy bits not dissimilar from pork floss. It was very good. The clams and fish soup followed. The clams were good, imbued in a garlic and shallot filled oil, as was the fish soup, which was a deep orange hue (likely from shellfish broth) and full of fish bits. Then came the showstopper. The arroz de mariscos, or the seafood rice. My god, this was so delicious!! The rice had some bite to it and was immersed in a deeply flavourful stew, filled with shrimp, mussels, clams, and cockles. We just couldn't stop eating bite after bite!! The staff were also very kind and respectful, and we had an absolutely great time. Would highly recommend to everyone who comes by Porto!

Delicious! Favorite dish was the beans and seafood casserole dish. tried coming for dinner without reservation and line was not moving. Didn't want to wait 2 hours potentially so I came back for lunch next day 12:35pm there was a line already, but I got in after 10 mins of waiting. TIP- I noticed the restaurant gets empty tables from 2pm onwards so if you want to get a table without waiting or reservations, go at an off hour like at 2pm onwards (before dinner starts)
Be the first to ReplyEvery minute was worth the wait.
Excellent customer service, amazing food. Wine pairings were perfect. Amazing seafood soup. Lamb chops were great. We will return!!

TIPS TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO: - Reservations are booked 2 months out. Reservations are daily for 2 time slots (7pm/9pm). They won't hold your table for too long, so come as soon as you can to your reserved time or you will forfeit the table to walk-in guests. - Always a line outside for walk-ins due to the small capacity inside. If you don't have a reservation, try to get there as early as possible for the least wait time and best chance to get in. - The smaller the group in your party, the faster you can go in. They reserved only select tables for 3-4 people groups. - Large groups (over 4 people) is not likely, so skip this place altogether - They stop taking walk-ins after 9:45-10pm. We came around 7:30pm on a weekday. My friends and I consisted of a 3 people party, so we ended up waiting 2hrs in total! They only had a table by the window available for 3 guests, so we literally had to wait for the party before us to sit down, order and finish their meal. That took a good while! Finally, our turn arrived. We sat down at the table near the window where everyone outside waiting in line can see use eating, but we had no choice. We already knew what we were going to order, so we ordered immediately. We got a Petras Sparkling Water to share. We also got 3 dishes to share: SHRIMP IN FRYING PAN When the dish comes out, it's a fire show. It's blazing with fire which eventually dies down. You are treated with several pieces of prawn soaked in a delicious sauce. It was a nice small appetizer to start. OCTOPUS AND ITS RICE IN THE OVEN This is probably the most biggest and best valued dish on the menu. It's toasted on the top due to being baked in the oven. The octopus pieces are mixed in with the rice. In general, the rice was a tad bit salty for my taste, but nonetheless, it was very flavorful/seasoned. SHELLFISH PORRIDGE This is also quite big. It's a pot full of various seafoods: clams, mussels, prawns. The porridge had like a grits-like textured content inside as well making it filling. The sauce was very flavorful. This was a dish that we were debating on, but super glad that we got to try it. It was delicious. Despite the extra long wait for our table, I think it was worth it. The food is amazing! I love all our choices and you can't go wrong with whatever you get. Now, I get the hype around this restaurant. Probably one of the most memorable restaurants we ate at in Porto. Definitely recommend.
Be the first to ReplyBest meal I've had in Portugal, (after only 5 days here).
I had the salt crusted sea bass. The presentation and flavor were amazing. We were able to get a table at 12:45 on a Thursday in February.

We really enjoyed our dinner (had the shrimp, clams, octopus rice and seafood porridge)here last week. However the following day my friend started having diarrhea and feverish. Within a few hours I too started having very painful stomach cramps and feverish. This was the last restaurant we ate at but I can't 100% say it's from the food at this restaurant. But we had simple food at lunch and breakfast no seafood. Unfortunately it ruined a bit of our trip as we lost two days due to illness.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent place to eat!If you are visiting Porto
Excellent place to eat!If you are visiting Porto (Portugal), try to make it to Taberna Dos Mercadores for at least one meal! The place is a small restaurant in one of the alleys near the riverfront and is often filled with customers. They offer a menu with primarily traditional Portuguese food that is super delicious! We liked the food so much that we visited twice during the six days we were in Porto! There are, at most, a dozen tables in this restaurant, so often, they must turn away clients during hectic hours. So do not take it personally if you are turned away! Make a reservation ahead of time, and you'll be fine. Their fresh octopus salad is delicious, as is their seafood rice (the Portuguese version of seafood paella). But those shrimps! Oh my goodness! If you enjoy shrimps and/or prawns, you must try theirs! The other dishes you may enjoy at Taberna Dos Mercadores are their seabass and lamb chops. For dessert, we tried their pear. I do not recall what they called it, but it was in a delicious sweet sauce. The restaurant is in a small and charming space. The servers are on top of their game and are very helpful.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing! Get here early or make a reservation.
Doing simple cuisine perfectly is under appreciated. The best restaurant I visited during my trip to Portugal. I'll be back!
Be the first to ReplyThanks to Yelp we tried this restaurant on our first night
Thanks to Yelp we tried this restaurant on our first night in Porto. Lucky for us it is on the same street as our apartment. I can't say enough good things about it. Service was outstanding, food the best I've had in Portugal so far and very appealing atmosphere! My daughter had salted codfish which comes with quite a show when served! I ordered Shellfish Feijoada and it is the best meal I've had in Portugal! Our waiter spoke perfect English and was delightful! I could go on and on but I'll just say if you are in Porto don't miss dining here. Reservations are highly suggested!
Be the first to ReplyThis was a great stop.
It's reminiscent of Cleveland Westside market, but not as ornate, nor as large however, that being said, this place was a wonderful chance to get immersed in many varieties of local and international cuisine. There were dozens of options. It's a busy place and I could go back there every day for weeks and get a different meal. It's definitely worth a stop. it's a fun and busy place to go. I would advise going there earlier in the day however, it gets pretty crowded as the day progresses.
Be the first to ReplyPerfection in Porto! We lucked into a table for lunch here
Perfection in Porto! We lucked into a table for lunch here with zero wait time, and later found out from our hotel concierge that this is one of the most sought after places in Porto, nearly impossible to get a table at any time of day or year! It's a tiny spot (15 people max) near the river in Porto. It's tucked up a small alleyway with a very unassuming exterior. The food is top notch, high quality and the service is just perfect. We got the bachalau fritters and salt crusted sea bass. Good bread and olive oil to start, and wine with lunch, port to finish. A wonderfully memorable meal!
Be the first to ReplyCertainly a five stars.
Marvelous services which the waiter patiently explained the dishes and being very considerate all the time. This is one experience which I nearly cried for eating such tasty food. The seafood porridge was full of fresh seafood flavors that goes so well with the thick and smooth texture of the porridge with the well cooked rice. And what moved my hungry soul the most was the octopus rice. The way it was cooked with the skillet made the rice a bit crispy with ham stir fried in it that mixed the meat flavor in it. The octopus was tender, but not just that. It somehow has a natural sweetness from it. That was the moment I nearly dropped my spoon in amazement. The clam was a good appetizer, a good size being meaty, the olive oil and the spice well balanced. It was an eye opening experience and I fell in love of the city since this meal. I want to come back and visit this city again, even just for the octopus rice.

I spent 10 days in Portugal including Lisbon, Sintra & Porto. The best food I had on the whole trip was at this place. The Octopus Rice was delicious and I don't like octopus! I had a wonderful vegetable soup and the baked Apple dessert with meringue that was military grade bomb. These people know what they are doing in the kitchen.
Be the first to ReplyPhenomenal food and people.
Feels like eating at someone's home.Make a reservation. Don't miss this
Be the first to ReplyFirst meal in Porto and I struck gold.
Very friendly service and excellent food. It was packed inside so I was grateful that the tiny table outside was just paying their bill so I only waited 5 min to get seated. I wanted to sit outside anyway, so it was meant to be. I had a glass of vino verdhe, the clams, which are my fav, and the octopus rice. I thought the octopus rice was about a third of the size it actually was so my eyes bugged out when they brought it to the table. Needless to say I had plenty of leftovers. The dish was phenomenal. So flavorful.
Be the first to ReplyIf I could give this place more stars I would.
It's a very small place that can probable seat 14 people max. The food is DELICIOUS! We ordered the salted sea bass that came flaming to the table as it finished cooking. They fillet it right in front of you, and they remove the skin as it is where a lot of the salt sits while cooking. The octopus rice is cooked in a mini crockpot so it has a bit of crunch to it, it's filled with chunks of octopus. No skimping at this restaurant. The clams were tasty and the shrimp was everything. This place is a must but, beware it's hard to get a seat if you don't have a reservation, or aren't the first in line. We literally had a line of people watch us eat as they waited for their turn to get in.

We visited the Livraria Lello and stopped for coffee nearby planning on visiting a cathedral. Planning for lunch, I did a Yelp search and found this place. Arrived at 12:35 and got the best place outside. Incredible meal, incredible service. Baked octopus rice was unbelievable. Can't wait to come back.
Be the first to ReplyThis tiny restaurant is tucked in a small alley minutes
This tiny restaurant is tucked in a small alley minutes away from the Riberia. Given how small it is and that they do take reservations, it is super hard to get a table. On this last day of our Portugal trip, my friend and I had perfected securing tables at popular restaurants. They key is getting there right around opening time at around 12:30pm. It seems like most people place lunch reservations for after 1pm. All lunch customers who tried coming at around 1pm without a reservation was turned away. Our server chose a nice glass of white wine to pair with our order. We ended up having 2 glasses each. We shared the clams, which tasted super fresh and opted to share the seafood rice dish which was phenomenal and hearty. We were so full after so couldn't try all the other delicious looking options on the menu. A lot of people ordered the salt baked fish. I will definitely be coming back in the future with a reservation that will have to be made a few weeks in advance. If not, I'll come just before opening time!
Be the first to ReplyThree things I love: conciseness, quality, and a damn good
Three things I love: conciseness, quality, and a damn good deal. This place has it all, so we went there twice in 24 hours. Firstly, they have THE most literal menu you will ever find. The appetizer "sausages in a frying pan" leaves no questions. Its sausages, served in a frying pan. No more BS 3-line dish descriptions. I am so relieved not to have to wade through a phone book sized menu. A simple one item per line, one page menu - perfect for the indecisive like me.Secondly, whatever they are using, it's good stuff. Again I don't need to know that it was locally sourced from farmer John and the cow's name was Bessie from X town. They just feed you delicious, high quality food:- Codfish Croquettes - light and fluffy, not greasy.- Sausages In A Frying Pan - two types of small juicy sausages - large enough to share between 2-4 people (as are all the appetizers).- Shrimp In A Frying Pan - SO good- Clams - Very simple but perfectly cooked- Salt Crusted Seabass - Nice tableside presentation and definitely a superior version of this preparation that I've had, super tender.- Lamb Ribs With Grilled Potatoes - I don't do lamb but Hubby thought it was very good.- Shellfish Porridge - I you come from a porridge comfort food culture, you will love this. Somewhere between a super savory jook and grits, but made with bread. Easily sharable between 2-4. - Octopus In It's Rice In the Oven - Definitely the best thing we had - we have never had octopus that melts in your mouth like this. They swear that it has not been massaged to get it that way, but I don't believe them - there just HAS to be some burly dude back there just punching and throwing octopus left and right all day to achieve this. It also does not say how insanely HUGE it is. If you were eating nothing else, it might be too much food for one. If you share and eat anything else, it will stuff 2 of you. If you share between 3-4 and order several other things, that would be ideal. - Almond Flour Cake - Like a light moist marzipan, very tasty. - Chocolate Cake - A drier cake but super tasty with an impressive ganache and caramel layer. I don't like walnuts but I liked it in this. With a couple of beers and water, this came out to be about 55-60 Euros per meal before tip. Which in Portugal may not be cheap, but to someone from San Francisco, it's like winning the lottery. If your aren't total pigs like us. You can eat well for about 20 Euros/pp before tip. And pleeeaaase do tip well, the staff here are awesome. The two waiters Carlos and Miguel are true professionals and have clearly been at it a long time.We didn't know anything about this place except that a friend recommended it. Turns out it has quite a bit of hoopla around it and it's not that easy to walk into. The place is TINY and only has about 12 seats inside, and you have to walk through the open kitchen to get to the wash rooms. You are unlikely to get in without a reservation, but we did, by stalking the restaurant well before dinner opening and eating outside at one of its 3 (remarkably stable despite being on a huge hill) outdoor seats, which are for walk ins only. We watched as dozens of diners were turned away or had to reserve for another day. I say just put on a scarf and eat outside! 2nd time, we went for lunch and it was raining cats and dogs, but we still ate outside while staying dry under the huge umbrella and had a blast as passer-bys stared at us like we were crazy. Apparently, it's so good that people eat out in ungodly weather all the time here!I have to stop writing this review now because the octopus rice has expanded and I'm turning into a pigeon after a wedding. I have to deflate before our next meal, which might be here again.
