Best sushi at a great price
I have been coming here since 1996 , Even in their original location at Tsukiji. The sushi is the best ! The fish is super fresh and the rice is warm and just the right amount of fish to sushi. the price is right too. Abalone was on the omakase menu. Get there early and expect to wait. We got there at 445AM and there was a line to get in to Toyosu market which open at 5AM. There was a person giving time for when the restaurant opens at 6AM. We got an 830 seating. Even if we got there earlier the least amount of time would be 2 hours. Hard to justify this wait but if you are a sushi fanatic go for it.

I don't feel comfortable recommending this place and felt it's over-rated. It's hard to find a bad restaurant in Japan, even harder to find a bad restaurant inside of Toyosu Market. This place isn't "better" than any other restaurants inside Toyosu Market as well as other parts of Tokyo and Japan. My Japanese friends who were born and raised in Tokyo never heard of it. It's perhaps more famous among foreigners. 90% of Sushi Dai customers are foreigners. I tried two more restaurants inside Toyosu Market, and they were just as good as Sushi Dai, if not, better. Most customers there were local Japanese. Toyosu Market is an interesting place to visit. All restaurants are good. My suggestion is walk into one(s) you like in Toyosu Market. It's hard to go wrong. Why I don't recommend Sushi Dai: 1. My Japanese friends don't approve it 2. Unorganized in its sign-up process: a. with 90% of customers being foreigners and non-Japanese speaking, and Sushi Dai has been in business for a long time. You would think they would post signs in different languages explaining its signup process, but it did not. Instead, the receptionist speaks limited English. I had to use Google Translate in order to communicate. b. they don't seem to want or need customers. First two times I went, they started turning down and sending away customers at 8am or 8:30am-ish. c. unorganized: they turned away customers but accepted other customers in line, seemed unorganized and chaotic. The way it works is they start giving out a number at 5am. Dining starts at 6am. Inside the restaurants, there are only 16 seats. Each day there is limited number available. To get your spot, you must show up at 5am to get a number and sign up for a time slot and come back later such as 3 or 4 hours later. That's my understanding. Unlike what's posted on Google that it's open from 5am to 2pm, and walk in on first come first service, there are nuances to it. I don't think it's worth the wait and going through this unorganized process just to try sushi. The food and seafood are no doubt fresh, like all other restaurants in Toyosu Market. The chefs seem to be able to speak multiple languages, which probably made it fun for foreigners. Once you get seated, the dining experience was fine, no issues. However, this evaluation consists of dining experience, process, and freshness of food. Sushi Dai met expectation on freshness of food but failed to provide positive and smooth signup process and experience, which was unfortunate. A good customer review consists of "experience + product/service itself." Sushi Dai was not effective in providing positive signup experience due to its ineffective communication and confusing sign-up process. I would not go again to Sushi Dai. Toyosu Market is worth visiting and revisiting. If I go again, I will try other restaurants in Toyosu Market, there are many on my list that I would like to give it a try.

As others have commented, you need to get here early if you do not want to be in a queue for service. I did just that. I arrived there about 4:00 am to be first in line. The building the restaurant sits in does not open until 5:00 am so you will have to wait outside. Once open you can make your way over to Sushi Dai which opens at 5:30. The sushi was simply outstanding. The quality of their sushi was amazing. Like others I did do the omakase menu. However, after that I had a few items that were a la cart. I have copied directions to the location that were provided by another TripAdvisor as it was quite helpful in finding the building the restaurant sits in. Directions: - Locate the Intermediate Fish Wholesale Building. It is the northwest building out of the entire Toyosu complex. - Line up along the south facing sliding doors. It is located on the same level as the elevated walkway, and east of the Fish Market visitor gallery entrance. The correct entrance will have "Restaurants Area" signage on the glass. - The complex doors will open a little before 05:00. - Locate the storefront that says Sushi Dai in Japanese. Several small stools are available for about 20 patrons. - Be prepared to wait an additional 20 mins or so while the restaurant makes final preparations for the day. A staff member will come out and take your order in English or Japanese.

Had to go there early to avoid queueing for so long. We reached there at 6am and we had to queue for 2 and a half hour! There is already a long queue when we reach. There are only 16seats in the shop and they go in batch by batch. 1 batch is around 1hour. Their omakase menu is 4,500yen which I think is ok. It's not expensive considering the food. There are like 9 sushi + 1 sushi of your own preference. The staffs are really friendly as well. I think they are one of the places with the freshest sushi in Tokyo. Go early or be prepared to queue for a very long time.

The Toyosu Fish Market is like the Grand Central Terminal of where seafood is auctioned and sold to restaurants and markets across Japan. Within this market are multiple sushi establishments which open at 5:30 am to serve the sushi loyalists from around the world. The most famous of these restaurants is the world renown Sushi Dai which opens at 5:30 am and closes at 2:00 pm. We arrived at 3:30 am to find a line of people already waiting for the first seating. The free Tokyo city WiFi helped pass the hours away until we were called into the restaurant. The menu is simple: the Omakase (โtrust the chefโ) or the vegetarian option. I opted for the former and was wonderfully surprised to find my expectations surpassed as the sushi chef placed one piece after another of familiar but incredibly fresh, room temperature pieces of the dayโs catch. Sushi Dai was mildly priced by Japanese standards: $41 per person for 11 different pieces of fish served Omakase style. Itโs hard for me to fathom waking up at 3 am to go eat ... sushi. But the establishment lived up to its reputation. Sushi Dai was easily THE best sushi I have ever experienced. Itโs nice to share with all those grossed out by exotic foods. It is places like this that can convert the meat and potatoe die hards into seeking new adventures outside of their normal gastronomic limits.
